Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper has said that whilst he is disappointed to not have defender Jake Wannell’s red card overturned he has said that the team have enough to cover his absence for this weekend’s trip to high-flying York City.

Wannell was given his second red card of the season late in the 1-0 defeat at home to FC Halifax Town last weekend for an alleged stamp on visiting defender Will Smith. The Glovers provided video evidence which Cooper said after the incident he felt would vindicate his player, but the dismissal has been upheld.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah on Thursday ahead of the trip to York, Cooper confirmed centre-half Morgan Williams will be available after serving his own  ban. The boss also has  Dom Bernard following suspension, the former Forest Green Rovers player was on the bench last weekend.

“It doesn’t surprise me that [the appeal] was rejected, apparently the footage we supplied wasn’t clear enough, the linesman can see from 70 yards away that it was a stamp, but the panel can’t see clearly on the footage that there is no stamp, I mean, I can see there isn’t a stamp.

“Jake just tries to release his leg, the lad has got hold of his leg, Jake tries to release it, not one of the Halifax players appeals, not one, and they’re five yards away and that’s always the biggest clue, if they appeal and not one person appealed.

“So, yeah, they have gone on a linesman 70 yards away, I can see on the footage there’s no stamp, but the FA can’t. It’s four games, we can’t do anything about it, the FA Trophy counts as one but we’ve got Morgan Williams coming back in, we’ve got Dom Bernard as well, so we’re covered.”

Midfielder  Charlie Cooper is back in the fold after a one-match ban of his own. Combined with Matt Worthington’s return to full training means that only young midfielder Caleb Hughes, who is yet to appear since his arrival at Huish Park, remains on the physio’s table.

“You want as many good players, who are experienced at the level, you want as many of those available as you can. Losing Jake, it’s good that we’ve got Morgs coming in now and Charlie coming in gives us some competition in the middle.”

“[Worthington] is back in today with the group and we’ll see how he goes, Caleb Hughes picked up a hamstring injury last week and won’t be available for a while.”

With the defence chopping and changing recently, one of the stand-out performers has been former Bradford City defender, Finn Cousin-Dawson. Cooper spoke of how he’s taken his time to get going, but is now in the swing of things at Huish Park.

“I’m not one for talking about individuals, because you’re setting someone up for a fall, all the players are playing really well. Finn had a difficult start, he’s come to a different part of the country, a different way of doing things, the way football is, you’re expected to hit the ground running and play in a new environment and be a ten out of ten [ed. we assume he means seven out of seven]. Sometimes it takes time,

“Finn has started to find his feet and the way that we train, the way that we play, he knows exactly what he has to do in that back line and full credit to him.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, Mark Cooper said Saturday’s clash with York has the potential to be two similar styles and two entertaining sides going head to head.

“[They’re a] Good team, very well coached. Adam (Hinshelwood, the York City manager) and his team, you can tell have been left to get on with just coaching the team and they’ve put their own stamp on it and brought their own players in, how they work – they want the ball all of the time, they’re good. Exactly like we do, we want the ball, so hopefully it’s a really good game of football.

“We don’t want it to be end-to-end, we want it all at one end, but there’s two parts to football, you have to be really good when you don’t have the ball and have to be really good when you do have the ball.  It’s got the makings of a good game.”

Ref, Referee, Match Official

Yeovil Town make the trip to North Yorkshire this Saturday for a clash with York City.

Oliver Mackey is the lucky duck who gets to officiate the game, he’s jumped between National League and EFL games this season, taking charge of four games at this level, putting a total of 20 names into his little notebook.

We have seen him before, he was the referee for Bath City against Yeovil in the National League South, where if you recall, he awarded the Glovers a (stone wall) free kick late on which Morgan Williams turned home for the winner. Great decision, ref.

He did book Jordan Young and Matt Worthington though.

He’s also had the honour of refereeing one Jude Bellingham when the then Birmingham player was captain of England Under 16s in the 2018/19 season, in a 2-2 draw with Brazil Under 16s.

Mr Mackey will be assisted by Richard Wigglesworth, Adam Burgess and Ben Tomlinson, the latter will be on fourth official duties.

Feniton Feel Glovers Wrath

Yeovil Town Women returned to winning ways as they thumped Feniton by 4 goals to 1. This result left them in 5th position in the Regen Arable Division One South.

Two changes were made to the starting eleven which faced Sticker the week before, as Chloe Davenport and Chloe Bateman replaced Hannah Bishop and Zoe Ball. Emily Hall was back between the sticks for the Glovers.

Yeovil began the affair positively, as they earned their first opportunity in the 20th minute, Davenport saw her strike go just wide of the post.

Swiftly after this the Glovers broke the deadlock as Becky Miles fed Abbie Carslake, who cut inside and fired into the top corner to give Yeovil the lead.

The visitors continued to put pressure on Feniton as the half progressed, with Laura Wensley heading wide of the post following a Miles cross, on the stroke of half time.

Yeovil did not have to wait long before they doubled their lead in the second period, as Terri Will played a through ball for Davenport, who slotted confidently past the goalkeeper.

Moments later, and despite Yeovil’s dominance, the hosts had their first meaningful chance of the half, as Hall made an impressive save to deny Feniton a lifeline.

Following this, on the hour mark Yeovil took a step closer to returning to winning ways as Miles and Wensley combined again to make it three. Wensley confidently headed in from Miles’ corner.

The Glovers rubbed salt in Feniton wounds as they extended their lead further just a minute later. Miles added to her two assists and got herself on the scoresheet, all but confirming a Yeovil victory.

The Glovers were denied a clean sheet in the 65th minute as Feniton pulled one back.

The match finished 4-1 and ensured that Yeovil returned to winning ways in comprehensive style.

The player of the match was awarded to Abbie Carslake.

Yeovil Town’s game against Weston-super-Mare has been postponed this evening (Tuesday 19th) due to a waterlogged pitch.

Yeovil have said that anyone who had pre-purchased tickets for the game, can use them for the rearranged game, whenever that may be.

It was an end to the unbeaten run for the Glovers, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Huish ark against FC Halifax Town. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on…

We begin in East London, where a classic was staged between hosts Dagenham & Redbridge, and a victorious visiting Barnet. Despite leading 3-1 a few minutes into the second half, the hosts succumbed to a pair of Nicke Kabamba penalties, and a Rhys Browne winner to leave them stranded in mid-table. It was chaos at the Kuflink Stadium as 10-man Ebbsfleet United were hit for six by 10-man Solihull Moors, a 15-minute Connor Wilkinson hat trick leaving the hosts rooted firmly to the foot of the table.

There was another hat trick, this time a perfect one, at Boundary Park as James Norwood’s first half heroics led Oldham Athletic to an easy 4-0 win over Tamworth. Gateshead continued their stop-start form under new boss Carl Magnay, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Aldershot Town, while in a top of the table clash, it was Forest Green Rovers who triumphed with a 2-0 win over next weekend’s hosts York City.

The upset of the day came at Wealdstone, as they made light work of an out-of-sorts Rochdale side in a 2-0 win, and by the same score, Altrincham continued their good run of form in a home win over Southend United. In a big win at the bottom, Braintree Town secured a 1-0 win over AFC Fylde, who finished the game with 10 men, and there were two further 1-0 wins for home sides, as Woking and Sutton United defeated Boston United and Maidenhead United respectively. In the final clash of the day, it finished goalless between 10-man Hartlepool United and Eastleigh.

National League table

Yeovil Town have been drawn at home to W*ymouth in the FA Trophy!

W*ymouth have current Yeovil Town Goalkeeper Will Buse on loan as well as the likes of Brooklyn Genisini, Jordan Maguire-Drew and Malachi Linton who have all made their way to the seaside after departing Huish Park.

Ties will take place on Saturday 7th December, Winners of this round receive £4500, losers receive £1250.

Any ties that are level at 90 minutes will go straight to penalty kicks to determine a winner.

The Glovers last welcomed our friends to Huish Park last season in the National League South, with Yeovil winning 2-0 in front of what was a National League South Record attendance at the time.

It’s time for the return of everyones favourite competition,  The Somerset Cup, as Yeovil Town play hosts to in form Weston-super-Mare in midweek.

Form Guide…

The Glovers have been in superb form over the last month with three wins, a draw and a loss from their five games. The one loss was last time out as they fell to Halifax 0-1 at home. Aside from that loss Yeovil have had some good wins, defeating Southend and Maidenhead.

The Seagulls have also been in a purple patch in the National League South with four wins from five in the league. However, they have also been knocked out the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, to Bristol Rovers and those who shall not be named, respectively. The FA Cup result at the start of the month to the Gas was not as bad as the result shows, as WSM took the League One side to extra time.

Key Players…

Yeovil Town – Corey Koerner

Koerner is the obvious name that stands out for Glovers fans. The Under 18s captain was involved with the first team throughout pre-season. The defender also made the match day squad for the fixtures against Solihull and Fylde. Since then he has enjoyed fruitful loan spells at Plymouth Parkway and Sherborne.

He has been in fine form for the youth side scoring four goals in four league games for them, whilst also being somewhat of a set piece specialist.

Weston-super-Mare – Sam Pearson (potentially)

That’s right, the ex-Yeovil player has found some good form since leaving Huish Park last month. In his six games for the Seasiders, the winger has netted three goals.

During his time in South Somerset you could see the Welshman had quality about him but was unfortunately unable to show it all that often.

Sam Pearson can’t believe it

That’s what he said…

WSM gaffer, Scott Bartlett gave his thoughts on the his squad after Saturdays game. He said: “We have one or two that would benefit from a game but the rest will young ones, we’ve got to make sure we go into the following week with a fully fit squad.”

We’ve met before…

The two side have met six times since 2020 with four wins for the glovers and two draws. The last time the two sides met was in pre-season as Yeovil defeated the Seagulls 0-2 with goals from Aaron Jarvis and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Don’t I Know you…

On Weston’s side of things there are a few ex-Glovers with the previously mentioned Sam Pearson alongside Ruben Reid.

Reid played at Huish Park across two spells, the first time between 2012 and 2014 with 19 appearances and then again between 2021 and 2022 playing 49 games scoring 10 goals during both spells.

Who’s been naughty then…

No suspension to report.

The unbeaten run has come to an end, but there was plenty to like about the last half an hour yesterday. Here are my conclusions from a fiery finish at Huish Park.

It lived up to its pre-match billing. We didn’t anticipate a goalfest and we didn’t get one. Halifax don’t score many and don’t concede a lot either. For the first hour, Yeovil didn’t particularly lay a glove on the visitors, while they had pot-shots from distance and one big (offside?) chance where Ollie Wright made a great save from Billy Waters. I think the difference that Charlie Cooper makes when were in a 3-4-2-1 was clear. We needed that fire in the middle of the pitch and we really missed him.

We didn’t get going until the changes. Halifax’s goal saw Mark Cooper change things up and Yeovil came to life. The return of Michael Smith and Josh Sims – showing more than he has so far in a Yeovil shirt – lifted everything. The players started finding space and putting a load of pressure on Halifax’s back line. That energy lifted Huish Park and for the final 20 minutes there was belief that an equaliser was coming.

Goalmouth Scramble v Halifax
Pic: Gary Brown

I’m not sure how we didn’t score. The relentless wave of green and white tried it’s best to suffocate Halifax but somehow couldn’t get back on level terms. Sims had chances, Wannell had chances, there was scramble after scramble, tussling in the box, shouts for penalties and everything else under the sun but no goal and more drama…

I think it was a red card. As the match ticked closer to the 90th minute it became a powder keg and it was either going to explode into a goal or something else. Sadly, it was something else. Jake Wannell gets caught in a tussle inside the Halifax half and as he tries to stand up, he stands on the opponents leg. My gut feel at the time was that it was a stamp. The ref didn’t see it, the assistant on the Screwfix Stand side didn’t see it, but the official furthest away did. There was certainly some of that classic football hustle and bustle in the moment but I can see why the red was given.

Jake Wannell is flabbergasted at the decision to send him off.

Finn Cousin-Dawson was excellent. He was awarded sponsors man of the match and it was well-deserved. FCD has been on the periphery up until suspension season and he’s taken his chance. Preferred to the available Dom Bernard yesterday he was calm and composed defensively and strong stepping out with the ball. With a potential four match ban for Wannell should an appeal be unsuccessful, he deserves to retain his place in the team.

Time for another round up of what our loanees have been up to out and about on Saturday.

Firstly, there was a debut for Jordan Thomas, he started for Torquay in their FA Trophy game against Truro.

His new side came out on top 1-0 thanks to a second half goal from Dan Hayfield.

Before his debut, Thomas gave an interview to the club’s YouTube channel where he described the move as a ‘no brainer’, you can listen to that… here.

Also in FA Trophy action were that lot down by the seaside, who were playing the other lot by the seaside.

W*ymouth, with Will Buse in goal beat Weston-super-Mare 3-2 to progress to the next round of the Trophy.

He’s also had a little YouTube clip made of him, give that a watch here, if you like.

Jacob Shore was in the Tavistock line up for their 2-2 draw against Malvern Town, another solid display for the defender in that one.

Mason Alden was in the Welton Rovers team that lost 2-0 to Brixham whilst team news hasn’t been helpful in deciphering if Nansimir Nanev (Sturminster Newton) or Sol Padmore (Bridport) played for their teams.

There was no Corey Koerner or Josh Haskett in the Sherborne side
