Ref, Referee, Match Official

After a full week’s break, Yeovil Town welcome both Dagenham and Redbridge to Huish Park this Saturday.

The Daggers, hot off the heels of their first game in the Temu Trophy or whatever they’re calling it, will be looking to win their first match against Yeovil since the back end of the 2021/22 season.

So, who is charge of the game?

Mr Ross Martin is.

Martin, is a referee who has never officiated a Yeovil game that hasn’t ended in a win for the Glovers, three games as referee – three green and white wins.

The most recent of these came on Boxing Day last year, when he took charge of Yeovil’s 4-1 rout over Taunton Town.

He booked the Peacock’s midfielder Nick McCootie in the 85th minute… twice! Quick fire yellows became a red and McCootie was off!

He also jotted the names of Matt Worthington, Charlie Cooper and Joe Day on that occasion.

He was also the man in the middle for home wins over Aveley and St Albans in the same season,.

He will be assisted by Stuart Kane and Kevin Morris (side note: Mr Morris was also flag waving for the Altrincham home game) whilst Daniel Flynn is in charge of keeping the dugouts in order.

Yeovil Town Bag NINE in Bideford Rout

Match Round Up

Bideford AFC 0-9 Yeovil Town Women

Yeovil Town Women recorded their first league win in devastating style, as they hammered Bideford by nine goals to nil to get their league campaign up and running. The match saw first goals for Orla East and Ava Beattie, as well as a hat-trick for Niamh Nicholls, a brace for Becky Miles and goals for Abbie Carslake and captain Jess Hodge.

Paul Knight made one change to the team who enjoyed FA Cup success the previous week, as last season’s top scorer Niamh Nicholls replaced Terri Will.

After an intense start Yeovil had to wait just ten minutes before opening the scoring, Abbie Carslake opened her league account to give the Glovers the lead, making it two goals in two weeks.

Ten minutes later Yeovil’s lead was doubled, courtesy of captain Jess Hodge, to strengthen the visitors’ grip on the affair.

A dominant first half concluded with Niamh Nicholls scoring her first goal of the season, giving Yeovil clear daylight going into the break.

The Glovers began the second half in a similar fashion to how they finished the first, as substitute Orla East scored her first goal for the club to make it four.

As the half progressed Yeovil refused to let up, as Becky Miles secured her third and fourth goals of the league season, as she struck a four-minute brace to rub salt in Bideford wounds.

Following this, Ava Beattie converted her first goal in green and white to give the Glovers seven after 75 minutes.

The final goals of the afternoon arrived in the final five minutes of normal time, as Niamh Nicholls scored twice to secure a hat-trick in her first league start of the season.

That’s what they said

Yeovil Town Women manager Paul Knight spoke after the victory.

Paul began,

β€œIt was a good game from the girls, a bit more like our way of playing, the game plan today was just to get at them and get our league campaign going. The conditions have been awful here today for everyone, really high winds, a lot of rain which affects the play. The scoreline’s quite high and we got the job done.”

Paul expressed how he still wants more from his team in front of goal,

β€œWe’re not quite there yet in all honesty, the girls will think that I’m being hard on them, it’s a big win today but as a coach you have to look at the areas which in the big games are going to cost us and not get us results that we want. This should have been a double figure game and we’re still missing opportunities in front of goal.”

Ahead of next week,

β€œWe’re back on home turf, we like our home ground, the pitch conditions are good, which plays to our advantage. I said last week we’ve got the bit between our teeth, we just have to take it week by week and try and get results.”

Charlie Wakefield holds off his marker

We didn’t have to go too far back in the history books for this one. Signed by Darren Sarll in 2021, Charlie Wakefield spent two seasons at Huish Park and became a fan favourite in short order. Charlie spent a Friday evening in September chatting to Dave and Ben about his time in green and white including his goals, his departure, his ‘Man Up’ documentary and more. Sing it with us…Oooh baby do you know what it’s worth…

At the time of his departure, friend of the pod, Jake Gallagher wrote this Ode to our star man.

A double from captain Corey Koerner saw Yeovil Town Under-18s progress to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup with a 4-1 away with at Helston Athletic on Tuesday night.

The visitors went behind after just 14 minutes when Levi Hilling put the north Cornwall side ahead before Koerner struck the equaliser after a scramble inside the penalty area with 32 minutes on the clock.

Within six minutes of the restart, Ollie Hughes fired Yeovil ahead before substitute George Geraghty added a third on 68 minutes and Koerner completed the scoring with eight minutes remaining.

Koerner was on the bench for the first-team in a 4-3 win at AFC Fylde at the start of last month and is currently out on loan with Plymouth Parkway in the Southern League Premier Division South.

Victory puts the Glovers through to the Third Qualifying Round, ties for which will be played the week commencing Monday 14th October. We will bring you the draw when it is available.

Yeovil Town Under-18s: Louis Parker, Alec Thomas, Corey Koerner, Sol Padmore, Josh Ansell, Blake Watts, Joe Crisp, Nansimir Nanev, Leyton Westlake, Morgan Alexander, Ollie Hughes. Substitutes: Liam Harding, Adam Samuels, Sam Richards, Oscar Foot, Reece Bastafield, George Geraghty, Devon Proctor.
