October 2024 (Page 11)

Yeovil Women have been drawn away at Highburn Athletic in the first round of the Somerset Women’s Senior Cup.

The Glovers who got to the final of the competition last year will be hoping to go one better after losing to Keynsham in the showpiece final last year.

Due to an FA request to align all Women’s Senior Competitions, there will be a wait for this game, not currently scheduled to take place until Sunday 19th January 2025.

Yeovil Town’s youngsters have been drawn away at Bridgwater United in the next round of the FA Youth Cup.

Bridgwater, who got past Fairford Town on Friday night will welcome the Glovers at some point during the week commencing 14th October.

Yeovil beat Helston Athletic 4-1 in their first game in the competition this past week thanks to a couple of goals from Corey Koerner.

Yeovil Town will be back home action on Saturday as they play host to Dagenham & Redbridge at Huish Park.

Form Guide…

The Glovers have found wins hard to come by recently with no wins in their last five, over that period Mark Cooper‘s side have four draws and one loss. Goals have also been even fewer and farther between with just the one goal scored.

The Somerset side picked up that one in last outing which was a 1-1 draw at home to Aldershot Town with on-loan Rotherham United man Ciaran McGuckin’s equaliser being that only goal in the last five.

The Daggers have been very much the opposite of Yeovil over their last five games with four wins and a draw from those outings. The wins have been emphatic as well against good opponents, the run of results include a 7-1 victory over Gateshead and a 3-0 win against Sutton United. Both those wins came on home soil where Dagenham have the sixth best record in the division (P6, W3, D2, L1), but they sit 18th out of 24 in the away form table (P6, W1, D3, L2) after 12 matches.

In their latest fixture they took a very good point from a decent Solihull Moors side, with the match finishing 1-1, albeit manager Ben Strevens described himself as “very disappointed” after seeing his side waste a hatful of chances to make it three points.

The Daggers sit two places and two points ahead of Yeovil going in to the match in tenth place in the National League Premier table.

Key Players…

Yeovil Town – Ollie Wright

I myself have been sceptical about the shot-stopper with some of his mistakes at the start of the season. But over the last couple of matches the young keeper has made some important saves to keep his side in with a chance of a result.

Wright is still learning his trade so mistakes are more than expected, but with the Glovers’ attackers struggling to find the net, the team need the defence and especially goalie to keep the opposition from scoring at the other end. If Yeovil want to get results at the moment they have to rely on the keeper.

Dagenham & Redbridge – Dion Pereira

For the Essex side it’s been former Huish Park loanee Dion Pereira who has blossomed this season. The left winger has contributed seven goals so far this season and has also chipped in with three assists.

The Luton Town loanee, who had a forgettable one-match spell under Darren Sarll in October 2021, has already shown what an asset he can be in his 12 games so far, so will hand full for whoever is chosen to mark him.

Another recognisable name in the lower leagues that is a worth mention is striker Junior Morias, formerly of Peterborough United, who have a knack of picking up talented players.

That’s what he said…

Yeovil Town boss Mark Cooper is wary of the attacking talents the Essex side have at their disposal. He said: “They have some good, experienced players and they can cause problems on their day with Junior Morais and Josh Umerah up front, they are a handful at this level.”

Daggers’ manager Ben Strevens, who knows Yeovil assistant Chris Todd from their playing days and managerial days together at Eastleigh, said he believed the Glovers should have won their last match at home to Aldershot Town.

Speaking to Daggers’ TV, the former midfielder said: “We know we are going to have to be at our best, whenever you go away from home in this league, you do not get any points if you are anything but your best.

The boss also spoke about new signing defender Romoney Critchlow, the transfer-listed central defender who has joined on loan from Peterborough United ahead of the trip to Somerset.

Strevens added: “He will add to the balance of the side. When we signed Trent (Randall) in the summer we expected him to be a right-sided centre half, but he did so well for us at right back in pre-season that he stayed there. So we always felt we were one centre half light, so bringing Rom in to the group helps us with a number of players being out injured. He is a good player who has become available and if there are players who we think will help us improve, we are going to try and do that.

We’ve met before…

There have been 11 meetings between these two teams since they first met in 2010. Of those 11 matches Yeovil have ran out winners on five occasions and The Daggers have won four, with just the two draws.

The last time they met was in January 2023 when the Glovers took all three points with a 2-0 victory, with goals from a Jordan Maguire-Drew penalty and Matty Worthington after the Daggers’ Harry Phipps was sent off after half-an-hour.

The last time we faced the East London side at Huish Park, Yeovil picked up a rare victory under then-manager Chris Hargreaves with Jamie Reckord’s 34th minute strike the difference in August 2022.

Don’t I know you?…

We have already mentioned the only former Glover in Dion Pereira, who came on loan to Huish Park in 2021 playing just a single game. He’s quite a different player to the one we saw it seems.

On the Daggers’ bench, Lewis Young, who was part of the 2012/13 side which earned promotion to the Championship, is assistant manager to Ben Strevens at Victoria Road these days.

Who’s been naughty then?…

Neither team will have anyone missing through suspension.

SUPPORT THE GLOVERSCAST

The Gloverscast is a volunteer run website which costs money to maintain. If ever you feel like supporting with our running costs, which include our website hosting, Zoom subscription, The Daily Glove, we’d be extremely grateful for your donations.

This weekend Yeovil Town mananger Mark Cooper joins an elite list of Glovers’ managers. He will take charge of his 100th first-team fixture for the club when his side take on Dagenham & Redbridge at Huish Park.

With 99 on the clock, and a win rate percentage of a tiny bit over 43%, he sits second in a ‘Post-Gary Johnson’s First Stint in Charge’ table for games won ratio – for those wondering only Josh Staunton’s perfect one from one can boast a better percentage.

Presuming he sees the season out in charge at Huish Park, he’ll overtake Darren Sarll’s 134 games, and if he sees out his contract in full, he’ll have skipped past both Terry Skiverton (157) and Darren Way (152) for league games in charge.

By the end of October, Cooper will also have passed two complete years as Yeovil boss. All of these numbers are, in the grand scheme of football in 2024, impressive. But that doesn’t begin to tell the full story.

Like his predecessors, he’ll (hopefully) make a fortune telling the full story of his time at YTFC, but I don’t think anyone quite saw the rollercoaster that would unravel when we first saw Cooper in the stand at Oldham Athletic, with Chris Hargreaves’ tenure destined to end.

He said he was there to watch son Charlie, who appeared as 74th-minute substitute in a 2-0 win for the Latics and who would eventually follow his Dad to Somerset. Could they have predicted what would follow their arrival?

He watched from the stands as the Glovers drew with Maidstone United the day after after he was announced as manager and suffered more late heartbreak when a late goal led to a defeat at Woking in his first match on the touchline. But after that, he managed us through a seven-game unbeaten run over the Christmas and New Year period.

Mark Cooper watches on from the stand at Maidstone United in October.

He promised a “heavy possession style” with “a team that likes to get crosses in the box” in his first pre-match press conference. 100 games later, it feels like he’s kept that promise.

The back end of the 2022/23 season was a car crash off-the-field – we’ve talked the back legs off this stuff and don’t need to again – but one shining light in all the darkenss was the way that Josh Staunton as captain and Mark Cooper fronted up time and time again.

Not a single Yeovil fan would have blamed Cooper, or anyone associated with YTFC, from walking away after the Wrexham game that confirmed the Glovers’ relegation to the National League South – Cooper’s first-ever on his managerial CV, albeit one with a huge asterisk attached to it.

He said he “could have walked away six weeks ago”, but said he wanted to stay, he felt a loyalty and would “love to” rebuild the football club.

Following his takeover new owner Martin Hellier offered Cooper the stability to get on and build a team capable of bouncing back.

A massive club in a relatively small division, needed more than just money throwing at it. We may have had one of the biggest budgets in the National League South, but getting the people right was was crucial to preparing a side for challenges we had not seen since our last stint in regional football back in the 1990s.

We were big fish in a small pond. Cooper knew that and knew that we weren’t going to blitz teams away, but were still good enough to win games and entertain people. We did just that.

The unbeaten run that got everything up and running needed more than it’s fair share of patience, as late goals (mainly from Morgan Williams) were the norm. We kept the ball moving, sometimes sideways, sometimes backwards – but actually when you think about it, football is a simple game, you can’t concede if you have possession of the ball.

With the help of assistant manager Chris Todd and first-team coach Marcus Stewart the playing staff was built, and then tweaked as the season goes on.  Will Buse out, Joe Day in, Zac Bell out, Michael Smith in.

Tough decisions, ones that many of us from the outside were shocked by, like Josh Staunton not getting the game time and eventually leaving the club, on paper made no sense.

But when you look back now, and the defensive solidity that came from Smith-Wannell-Williams-Whittle built our title charge.

What we see in press conferences is a Mark Cooper with his guard up sometimes, a little shielded, maybe a little tense, with a professional head on – cards close to the chest with only a few nuggets offered out.

That same steely approach even creeps into warm ups, we’ve seen back fours warm up in a certain way only to start the game with wing-backs.

But off camera, off the record, he’s a carefully considered football man, someone who cares deeply, and can laugh and smile and joke about a referee’s decision – they are jokes, right, Mark?

See, he can smile. Picture courtesy of Iain Morland.

I consider myself fortunate to have spent a few of those moments after games in Cooper’s company. After Wrexham, Boreham Wood when things are bad, after Boston this season when things were good and plenty more besides – at some point in the next 100 games, I think I’d like to see that side to Mark Cooper show itself a little more.

We saw it (just) after Worthing away, where he ended up in a Rhys Rosser hug and let out – by his standards – a roar of delight. Watch the HP Source after the Truro City win that secured our return to the National League Premier at the first time of asking. He tells his team they need to beat Dover Athletic in the next match, but then invites them to “go f***ing mental”.

He took very little limelight, almost apologetically lifting the trophy to a packed out Huish Park. But I really don’t think any of us should take lightly how he turned a losing dressing room into a winning one.

Super Cooper’s Greens are gunna blind you…
📸 Gary Brown

It was a Huish Park that wasn’t used to being packed out, by the way. You can improve the matchday experience as much as you like, add as many bars and entertainment channels as you like, if the results on the pitch aren’t there – the DJ is playing to nobody.

He has, at times, asked for more from Yeovil fans, particularly those behind the dug out – “Gerrit for’ard Cooper” they demand – but he’s a man of principals, we’ve only ever ‘parked the bus’ once that I can remember – Notts County away, the most ridiculous of 0-0 draws.

Players have come and gone, some have really shone, others have barely blinked an eyelid before their time is up.

But each one of them either knows before hand, or finds out very quickly, what it’s like being a Mark Cooper player. Some get it, Matt Worthington (who worked with Cooper before) and Frank Nouble (who Cooper was desperate to sign the season we went down) stand out under Cooper. Jake Wannell, Sam Pearson, Jordan Young and others have all grown under Cooper, too.

With plenty of time still left on Cooper’s contract, there’s no sense of him being done with his YTFC story yet. It’s one thing being the manager that gets us back into a National division from the depths of regional football, but someone WILL be the coach who takes us back to the Football League.

That might not be this season, maybe not next either, but with the right backing, the right support around him, I’d argue Mark Cooper is well-qualified to do that. He remains the only manager to be promoted from both regional divisions and the National League Premier.

The asterisk I referred to before, the one that adorns the only relegation on his CV, now acts merely as a coaster to rest the National League South trophy on.

100 Games in charge is no mean feat, especially given the path that took us to where we are now.

Thank you for your service, Mark… just one more thing… “Gerrit for’ard, will ‘ee”

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper‘s red card in the dying seconds of a 1-0 defeat at Oldham Athletic last month has been overturned, the club have confirmed.

The boss was sent to the Boundary Park stands by referee Paul Marsden for his complaints after a loud penalty appeal for a foul on defender Morgan Williams inside the box.

In his  interview after the game, Cooper’s assistant Chris Todd said the red had been shown for “persistent moaning” at the match officials.

Ian is back with Dave and Ben to preview Yeovil’s match with Dagenham and Redbridge, in what will be Mark Cooper’s 100th match in charge of the club. There’s some reflection, his first teamsheet plus we had an email that made us feel old.

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper believes that another performance like the one his side showed on their last outing at Huish Park will see them end their winless run of five matches.

The Glovers host Dagenham & Redbridge, who sit two points and two places above them in the National League Premier table, on Saturday, having drawn 1-1 at against Aldershot Town at Huish Park last weekend.

Speaking ahead of the match, the boss said: “We played really well, creating some good chances and we were committed and I thought we deserved to win the game. If you are scraping 1-0 wins and not playing well, you are going to start losing game, but if you are performing like we are, with the spirit and commitment we have, we can go and win lots of games.

It is just another game for us, you cannot win every game and you go through periods as a team where you do not win some games. It is (the media’s) job to make a thing out of it and it is my job to get the team to get performances and if we do that, the wins will come. But we are still picking up points and that is the main thing.

Cooper said that full-back Alex Whittle was suffering from a shoulder injury sustained in the goalless draw at Sutton United and could be a doubt for the weekend. However, Bristol City loanee Raphael Araoye is back training with the side having been missing with a dead leg in recent matches. The towering defender played and scored for his parent club’s Under-21s on Monday.

Forward Harvey Greenslade is also back in training having been missing since the end of August with a shoulder injury. There was no update given on the fitness of either full-back Michael Smith (hamstring) or midfielder Josh Sims (knee), who were both involved in the pre-match warm-ups but not in the squad against Aldershot.

James Plant puts a cross in. Picture courtesy of Gary Brown.

Cooper spoke highly of on-loan Port Vale winger James Plant, who joined on loan until January last weekend, and came on as a second half substitute for Whittle last weekend.

The manager said: “When a chance to get a player of James’ quality at our level, you have to try and get him. We have been chasing for a long time and we got the nod we could do it and he showed in his performance what an asset he can be. We had another young (loan player) in Ciaran (McGuckin) at the top of the pitch, who was very good and scored a great goal and set up two other brilliant chances for the other forwards.

He has pace and he carries the ball, the other wide players we have are intricate players, but James is a runner and he complements the other players we have. We has two foot and can play on both sides either at full-back or down the wing, so he is a great acquisition.

Dagenham fielded a much-changed side as they competed in their first outing in the National League’s pointless new competition designed as a fig leaf for the footballing authorities’ willingness to give in to the Premier League’s complaints of fixture congestion and scrap replays from the FA Cup first round onwards.

They drew 5-5 against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s before ‘losing’ on penalties for an additional bonus point due to the ridiculous rules of a ridiculous new competition which benefits no-one other than the game’s richest sides.

Two players who have featured in the Daggers’ first-team, defender Christian N’Guessan and striker Reece Grego-Cox, both went off injured in the match. On Thursday, the Londoners announced the signing of Peterborough United’s transfer-listed central defender Romoney Crichlow, who has featured once for Posh this season having started last season as a highly-rated centre-back.

Cooper is not giving too much credence to the visitors’ exertions in midweek and predicting a tough match against a side which drew 1-1 at home to Solihull Moors last weekend, but have picked up just six points from their six matches on the road this season.

The Glovers’ boss said: “They changed a lot of their team and give minutes to some of the boys that needed it. Some of their starting players played as well, but I do not expect them to be any weaker or stronger. They have some good, experienced players and they can cause problems on their day with Junior Morais and Josh Umerah up front, they are a handful at this level.

Top scorer Brett McGavin believes the goals will flow for his Yeovil Town team-mates this season.

The Glovers have scored just once in their last five matches and take on a Dagenham & Redbridge side sat just two points and two places above them in the National League Premier table at Huish Park this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the match, the midfielder said: “I don’t think it is one thing (which has contributed to a lack of goals in recent games). I don’t think we have had that luck yet, we have not had a penalty in (12) games, we have had a few off the line and off the bar. I don’t think everyone is just firing at the same time which contributes to no goals, but we feel the frustration as much as anyone.

Particularly at home we know we should be scoring goal but I think once we get a game where we score two or three, I don’t think it will be a problem any more. We need a home win, I know the players would and I know the fans would, so we are all in the same boat.”

Brett McGavin. Picture courtesy of Gary Brown.

He added: “We have had a few games this season where we felt we should have come away with more, that probably a reflection of where we are in the table, if we had got a few more of those results to swing in our favour we probably would have been higher up. But, if we were really poor in games we would be much more concerned. We have had some really good performances, admittedly we have had some poor ones at home which we need to improve on, but we know we can perform at this level and we know the goals will come.

The 24-year-old, who joined in the summer from National League South side Torquay United, has played 12 times this season, scoring three goals.

He played 75 minutes in the 1-1 draw at home to Aldershot Town last weekend before being replaced by captain Matt Worthington and knows that he needs to keep his form up to stay in the side with Charlie Cooper and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton also able to play in his central midfield position.

He said: “If there is one week where I am not in the team, I am not disheartened because I know it is just tactical or I have had a poor game. But there are four good midfielders here and, whilst I obviously want to play every game, I realise it is a long season.

I enjoy scoring goals, of course, so when I am push forward I know I am there to score goals and when I am in the deeper role I am more of a play-maker and I have to do my role in that area as well. It is good to have competition, we all offer different things and the Gaffer knows that, so it is healthy competition.

I know it’s a long way away (that’s both a geographical and calendar-based reference) but for those of you planning REALLY far ahead, you can now get your tickets purchased for our trip to Hartlepool on Saturday December 21st.

The Hartlepool Cable Services Stand
Away supporters are situated in the Hartlepool Cable Services Stand (also known as the Rink End). This is an unallocated, all-seated stand that has a maximum capacity 800. There is no terraced area available for away supporters. There is space for 7 wheelchair users (plus carers) within the stand. Wheelchair entry for away fans is on the West Stand through the car park (Acland Homes Stand side)

The stand is located on Clarence Road and the turnstiles are adjacent to the main office building, ticket office and shop.

To ease congestion on busy games, fans may be allocated seating on arrival by stewards as they arrive into the stand and we appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
