Match Report

A dramatic final two minutes of the first half, saw Yeovil benefit from the only goal of the game as the Glovers beat high flying Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0.

A solid defensive display ensured that the first half own goal from Paul McCallum was all that separated the sides in a feisty encounter, this is how the Gloverscast’s Dave Coates saw the game…

 

First half

After an even opening exchanges, Charlie Wakefield broke down the left and went shoulder-to-shoulder with Callum Reynolds in the box, going down under pressure.

Put that one in the ‘you’ve seen them given, but you’d be annoyed if they were given against you’ box.

That lifted Yeovil and on 17 minutes, Wakefield was through again, but this time his shot was weak in to the arms of keeper Elliot Justham.

Tom Knowles has shot well held by keeper shortly after before Reynolds was gifted a free header but it only went in to the hands of Grant Smith.

The attacking threats of Paul McCallum, back after a five-match suspension, and ex-Yeovil man Angelo Balanta were there in flashes of quality but  without creating too much to trouble Smith.

Balanta put effort wide on 25 minutes and the Colombian came close with a header shortly after, but the first half was dominated by the visitors who looked in control and threatening against an opponent with undoubted quality in their ranks.

It took until the closing stages of the half for the game to break in to life. Knowles and the outstanding Dan Moss linking up well down the left, feeding the ball in to the box where Matt Worthington was lurking, only for Justham to intervene at the vital moment.

From the next move, a long throw by Knowles looped over the defence and skimmed off the head of Daggers’ frontman Paul McCallum for an OWN GOAL as the game entered injury time.

There were numerous bodies in the box and although the goal went down as the hosts’ mistake, it was due in no small part to the Yeovil presence in the box.

But the half was not finished there, and moments later Elliott Johnson flew in for a tackle on Dan Moss, sparking a melee which ended up with Johnson getting a straight red card.

Never leave early for half time.

If anyone thought going down to ten was going to stop Dagenham from pressing for an equaliser after the break, they were mistaken.

However, the first clear-cut chance came after 55 minutes when Moss’ ball in from the right fizzed through the box where Yussuf was the most obvious target but the ball was cleared.

But, at the other end it was half-time substitute Myles Weston was causing problems down the left hand side, enjoying a running battle with Jordan Barnett, who can feel hard done by to be edged out of contention for my man of the match by Moss, either player could deservedly have claimed it.

But, having soaked up that pressure, it was time for Yeovil to attack. On 63 minutes Wakefield ball found Knowles in space on the edge of the box , his shot was well turned aside by Justham.

To give Dagenham credit for the bulk of the second half, it was not obvious that Yeovil were playing with a one-man advantage.

Dagenham continued to press with Weston at the heart of their threat going forward.

When winger who drew a foul from Barnett with 15 minutes remaining, a fine Josh Staunton header cleared the danger for a corner from which McCallum sent a header goal bound only to be nodded off the line by Wakefield on the post.

From then on there was wave after wave of attacks from the hosts, Weston causing havoc to the extent he was eventually given the sponsors’ man of the match despite playing just the second 45 minutes.

But, aside from a George Saunders’ shot cleared away by Dale Gorman, there were no real threats to Grant Smith in the visitors’ goal.

The exhalation at the final whistle was ecstasy and relief – six unbeaten, we travel to Bromley on Tuesday night with no fear.

Match Report

An exquisite goal from Tom Knowles and Adi Yussuf in each half stretched Yeovil Town‘s unbeaten run to five games – yes, we’re counting the Somerset Premier Cup.

It was an at times ill-tempered match where the Glovers had to battle against an Eastleigh side above them in the National League table at the start of play and boasting some real quality in their ranks.

But, come the final whistle, it was Yeovil who moved up to 13th place with their visitors dropping to 15th.

Here’s how it played out at Huish Park…..

First half

An ankle injury to Jack Robinson saw the on-loan Middlesbrough defender saw Jordan Barnett drop back to left-back, with Max Hunt  and Luke Wilkinson reunited in the centre of defence.

That meant Josh Staunton moved forward in to a midfield three alongside Dale Gorman and Matt Worthington with Morgan Williams dropping to the substitutes’ bench.

Yeovil continued their habit of making a fast start to matches and enjoyed the better of the game for the opening 15 minutes.

However, as has also been the case this season, it was quality in the final third which prevented them from turning their possession in to serious threats on goal.

Despite the home side dominating play, it was Eastleigh’s Harry Pritchard who had the best early chance firing over from just inside the box after four minutes.

The visitors came in to the game more as things progressed with full backs in Michael Kelly and Josh Hare in the thick of it with top-scorer Ben House and defender Tom Broadbent both having opportunities.

A good piece of interplay on between Charlie Wakefield and Tom Knowles saw the latter test Eastleigh keeper Joe McDonnell  with an effort on 24 minutes.

The best chance of the first half fell to Adi Yussuf nine minutes later. A long throw by Knowles was flicked on by Hunt to find the striker six yards out but his header was off target after 33 minutes.

The game threatened to boil over on a couple of occasions with both Barnett and Dan Moss booked inside three first half minutes by referee Sunny Gill – last seen giving a yellow to Yeovil keeper Grant Smith for his ‘shagger hips’ after the FA Cup replay at W*ymouth.

But, it was a majestic moment from Tom KNOWLES that broke the deadlock with two minutes of the half remaining. A great pass by Wilkinson found him on the edge of the box from where he unleashed a stunning shot compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by ex-Glover Nick Crittenden on BBC Radio Somerset.

How different the half looked as a result of that moment of magic. The visitors undoubtedly had the better chances of the half albeit on the counter attack, but – even more importantly – the hosts led at the interval.

The first opportunity of the second half fell to the visitors when House got the wrong side of Wilkinson, who was grateful to his keeper Smith who came out to deny the visitors’ top-scorer.

Visitors’ captain Andrew Boyce headed a Whelan free-kick wide with another good opportunity just before the hour mark, before a neat bit of interplay involving created another opening for Yussuf who could not make the most of it.

On 65 minutes, Yeovil manager Darren Sarll replaced Wakefield with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton with his Eastleigh counterpart Ben Strevens introduced Ryan Hill and the pacey Vincent Harper in place of Kelly and Jake Hesketh.

That sparked the visitors who upped the tempo and and they pulled the game level  after 68 minutes with the first goal conceded  by Yeovil in 429 minutes.

Hill was involved finding House who slotted in Harry PRITCHARD, his first effort was blocked but he was able to turn in the rebound for the equaliser.

Sarll responded throwing on top-scorer Joe Quigley in place of Worthington and within eight minutes of going behind, the home side were ahead again.

A great ball by Smith picked out Quigley whose flick on found YUSSUF and he smashed an unstoppable strike for his third  goal in green-and-white.

In the 87th minute, Quigley had an opportunity to add to his tally for the season, creating a chance by his own persistence but his shot was blocked by McDonnell.

There was a heart in mouth moment in the dying moments of five minutes of added time when House looked to be shoved in the box, but referee Gill gave nothing.

Match Report

Yeovil Town were ruthless as they saw off the potential banana skin in Yate Town in the FA Cup first round.

Goals from Dale Gorman Matt Worthington Jack Robinson, Charlie Wakefield, Dale Gorman, Adi Yussuf and substitute Sonny Blu Lo-Everton rounded off a professional afternoon in South Gloucestershire.

Here’s how Coatesie saw the game from behind the goal at Lodge Road…

First half

The only changes from last weekend’s goalless draw at Solihull Moors saw Morgan Williams replace the suspended Max Hunt in the centre of defence.

The ex-Coventry City man was making his first appearance since picking up an injury at the end of September against Bridgwater United in the Somerset Premier Cup.

Luke Wilkinson returned from injury to the bench as one of only six of the allowed seven substitutes.

We were told about the width of the pitch at Lodge Road and it was Charlie Wakefield and Dan Moss who enjoyed it the most in the early exchanges, causing all kinds of problems.

Tom Knowles smashed a shot over aided by the fingertips of Yate keeer Andy Hannah after six minutes, but it was a minute later that a low corner by Jordan Barnett found its way to the edge of the box where it was hit by Dale Gorman  whose low hit was deflected in off of Jack ROBINSON.

I thought it was Gorman, the club Twitter account gave it to Gorman, then Worthington, the radio gave it to Adi Yussuf. After the game the club tweeted that it was in fact, Jack Robinson who scored.

Four minutes later Wakefield was twisting, turning and finding space on the right of the box, but his shot was blocked.

On 15 minutes, WAKEFIELD made no mistake when he was found in space inside the box by a Barnett through-ball, he turned his marker before bending in a superb shot.

It has to be said Wakefield personified the athleticism which Darren Sarll has spoken so much about this season, admittedly against a part-time side, he was relentless.

Yate had barely had an attack in the opening exchanges and even though they saw a lot of the ball for the next ten minutes, they didn’t do too much to trouble the Yeovil defence.

It took until the half-hour mark for the Glovers to extend their lead. The marauding Worthington broke in to the box and was brought down.

Yussuf grabbed the ball, he wanted it, but GORMAN pulled rank and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-0. 12 yards is not really enough for tequila, is it?

The hosts’ top-scorer David Sims-Burgess broke the offside trap on 33 minutes, but smashed his shot high and not that handsome.

Three minutes later it was Knowles’ turn to beat the flag, he tried to draw the keeper but lifted his shot wide.

Five minutes from the break Yate thought they had got one back, but it was handled in to the net. Despite the protests of the home supporters, that’s not allowed.

If the team talk before the match was to not allow their hosts to get their tails up, the briefing at the break must have been similar and Yeovil again did not disappoint.

Seconds in to the second half good link up between Knowles and Wakefield led to the latter’s effort going just wide, and soon after Gorman warmed the keeper’s hands with a shot from the edge of the box. Where else?

But the fourth goal came three minutes in to the second half, Josh Staunton did well to keep a high ball into the box alive, and his smashed pass across the face of goal came to YUSSUF was there to turn it home from close range.

It was another frustrating afternoon for Yussuf, he seemed to try to unsettle the hosts’ defence but never really did enough to threaten the goal. That said, he was confident enough to grab the ball when a penalty was awarded and he was in the right place at the right time with his goal.

If the game was not out of reach of the home side before that fourth, it was after it. Darren Sarll responded with his first batch of substitutions as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Luke Wilkinson replaced Williams and Jack Robinson on 52 minutes.

It took eight minutes for Sonny to make an impact. The same low corner routine that gave us the first goal got us the fifth on the hour. Gorman played it low in to LO-EVERTON who dropped a shoulder, turned into the box and bent in a nice shot in to the far corner.

You could almost hear our ball dropping in to the hat there and further changes saw Joe Quigley and Alex Bradley replace Yussuf and Worthington.

In terms of chances, that was pretty much that with the possible exception of Dan Moss’ effort over the bar after 71 minutes following good play by Wakefield, those two just never stopped.

The talk on the terraces turned to just how tall Yate substitute Joe Hall was (we’re talking Hugo Rodrigues stood in Miracle Gro tall) and, of course, who we’d all like in the next round.

Yeovil players after the 0-0 draw with Solihull

Here’s how Ben saw the game.

Yeovil Town take a point from high flying Solihull Moors after both sides were reduced to 10 men.

The Glovers started brightly which has been the case so many times early corners and throw ins from both flanks caused a Moors defence consistent problems.

But, having kept three recent clean sheets in victories, the play off chasers were often more than capable of dealing with all that was, quite literally thrown at them.

Tom Knowles and Charlie Wakefield were the out ball time and time again as the Glovers put their quick breaks to good use.

Half chances came and went at both ends, there were pot shots and scruffy moments for Adi Yussuf and Jordan Barnett in the final third, but the Glovers lacked that final moment of quality.

Solihull pushed and pushed and got more than their fair share of chances along the way too, Jamie Ball having not one, but two sights of Grant Smith’s goal.

As the half wore on the game continued to sway back and forth and just as the half drew to a close Yeovil missed what was probably the definitive moment of the match.

A dangerous throw in resulted in a corner which Dale Gorman whipped under the crossbar, somehow almost inexplicably Adi Yussuf put the ball over.

The second half started in the same scrappy fashion as the first, quality, especially in the final third was lacking but the real spark came when Jordan Cranston was sent off.

Cranston and Williams on opposite flanks were a constant outlet for Solihull and when Knowles and Cranston collided on the side of the pitch what happened after was bonkers.

Cranston lashed out sending Knowles to the ground and was rightly sent off.

Knowles was a marked man after that and tackles began to fly in, Jamie Ball was lucky to stay on the pitch and not see his side reduced to nine after a nasty challenge and plenty of afters on the Glovers attacker.

 

Max Hunt warms up

No more than 10 minutes later, the numbers were evened. Max Hunt found himself the wrong side of the attacker and had no choice to bring down former Glovers target Andy Dallas and seeing red himself.

The numbers were evened up but the attacking intent was now firmly with the hosts.

The introduction of Jamey Osborne gave Moors an edge in midfield that the Glovers lacked at times.

Joe Quigley was introduced and he did have a half chance as the game wore on but by the time ticked over to 80 minutes Yeovil had shut up shop.

Solihull threw the kitchen sink, but solid defensive performances from Moss, Staunton, Barnett and make shift centre back Jack Robinson were more than a match for everything they had to offer.

In truth, it’s a good point and a big case of ‘nearly’ being more than that on occasions.

A point is a good one. Bring on the FA CUP

Match Report

A first goal of the season for Tom Knowles put the gloss on a much-improved Yeovil Town performance to pick up their second win at Huish Park over Woking on a drizzly Tuesday night.

A strike from Charlie Wakefield had put the Glovers in front after just four minutes and the three points ended an eight-game run without a victory inside 90 minutes.

It also moved us up one place in the National League table to 14th, six points off the relegation zone and eight points off the play-off places after eleven matches.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll responded to a long run without a victory by dropping top-scorer Joe Quigley and bringing Adi Yussuf in to a front three, flanked by Wakefield and Knowles.

And having told his side they needed to “come out all guns blazing” after the 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town at the weekend, Sarll’s men made an attacking start.

So much so that Yussuf had the ball in the net after just two minutes. He  rounded the keeper after stealing an extra few inches on the Woking back line and slotted the ball home, only to be denied by the flag which was up early.

No more than a few moments later  though, it was Tom Knowles who worked himself into crossing space down the left-hand side.
Charlie WAKEFIELD stole a yard on his marker, took a touch and crashed his shot high into the roof of the net to open the scoring. That’ll do.

It was nearly even better a moment later as Wakefield tried to turn provider, but his cross-come-shot was blocked.

I couldn’t help but think that if the next 83 minutes were as frantic as the first seven, I’d not be moaning.

It wasn’t long before Marcus Duncomb was worried about where his nearest off licence (heck, make it a cash and carry!) was, as Dale Gorman fizzed in his first long range effort of the evening after 12 minutes. But the tequila would be left on ice for now as the 35-yard effort sailed over the bar.

His second attempt at getting small glass of Mexico’s finest wasn’t too far behind, but this time just skipping wide of the left post.

As the half wore on, quick breaks and set pieces were still plentiful for the Glovers.

Half chances for both Yussuf and Dan Moss came and went without testing Craig Ross in the visitors’ goal, but Jordan Barnett did force a decent stop at a tight angle.

The play was there, the finish was not… but we’ve heard that before.
The half began to die out with some scrappy decisions breaking up play.

Still, ahead at the interval and another chance to put a side to bed beckons in the next 45 minutes.

The second half started just like the first one ended, namely a Gorman shot from distance… oh yeah… and a goal – but not from the Northern Irishman. Marcus, rest easy for now.

The goal was copy and paste from the first, just flip the players around. Wakefield drove a ball across the six-yard line which just screamed ‘bury me’… and you haven’t got invite Tom KNOWLES twice.

There were ‘scenes’, ‘limbs’ and even the odd ‘flame emoji’ in the home end. Don’t tell me I can’t fall in love with footballers. Knowles has found his swag again… and it was wonderful.

What followed was Woking’s first stint of sustained pressure, no more than ten minutes and, as the clock ticked over an hour, Grant Smith hadn’t made a meaningful save.

Crosses rained it, free kicks whipped around him, but all, for now, dealt with by those around him.

A double substitution followed for the Cards as they sought to capitalise on this shred of momentum.

Yeovil responded with Yussuf coming off for top-scorer Joe Quigley.
The Tanzanian had worked hard for his hour, but without much in the way of match-defining razzmatazz .

The game was becoming scrappy, Woking knew how to kill the speed and flow of Yeovil’s game.

As frustrations grew, Glovers’ assistant Terry Skiverton found his way into the referee’s note book.

On the pitch, the Glovers were crying out for some control in the middle of the park. The game was in a lull, in need of a spark.

The home side on the verge in shutting up shop and taking what they’d earned.

A chorus of ‘We want Priestnall out‘ rung through the Thatchers Stand, reminding us that the future of our club still means as much (more?) than what is happening on it.

Further more free kicks won by not so genuine means littered the pitch as Woking knew their only way back in would be if their hosts lost their heads.

80 mins had now passed.

We’re Yeovil going to test their defensive resolve by sitting back or were they going to ease the nerves of those in the stands by continuing to press, hurry and give Woking the troubles they had not had any answers to as yet?

Josh Staunton and Max Hunt headed everything within sight, the full backs hooked another stray ball clear, but by now Quigley was the furthest man forward, no more than ‘Dale Gorman fancies a tequila’ distance from his own goal.

There was always a break away, but each one slightly more laboured than the last as the legs tired.

Each one often halted by Woking player hitting the deck at the slightest whiff of a chasing Glover.

Knowles was taken off with five to go, maybe to protect himself from the trigger happy ref.

86 minutes on the clock, Glovers’ fans will know all to well by now, the nerves are still around.

As the attendance was read out, and the announcement of five additional minutes, a rendition of ‘Allez allez allez’ broke out to help see the boys over the line.

A late debut for Jordan Dyer killed a a few more seconds, Grant Smith made his first meaningful save of the game as Woking continued to huff and puff (but not blow the house down – where have we heard that?) in the final few moments.

In truth it was comfortable, at times fairly pedestrian, the Glovers 2-0 winners with maybe, a little left in the tank.

A first half penalty and an injury time second was enough to send Yeovil Town home pointless and table-topping Grimsby Town kept their 100% record in front of their own fans.

The story was all too familiar for Yeovil with just one shot on target coming from a Dale Gorman free-kick late in the second half.

That said, the home side only had three on target themselves as the Glovers huffed, puffed but could simply not blow the house down.

Darren Sarll named an unchanged starting XI from the midweek FA Cup win over W*ymouth with seven players in the line-up having played 120 minutes plus penalties four days earlier.

For the home side, who had an outbreak of COVID-19 in the days leading up to the match, there were two changes with Will Bapaga and John-

The opening exchanges were relatively uneventful with neither side, the first chance of the game came after 20 minutes and led to an opener.

Speedy winger Will Bapaga broke free and got to the ball just ahead of visiting goalkeeper Grant Smith who caught him late and referee Andrew Miller gave the penalty.

After his midweek exploits from a shoot-out, Smith must have hoped his luck could continue, but Lennell JOHN-LEWIS‘ effort was too much despite the keeper guessing the right way.

From the next attack, Jordan Barnett appeared to get away with one after seeming to control the ball with his arm inside the box.

There was a risk of the visitors, backed by a bumper home crowd and boasting a 100% record could sense blood, but the visitors did well to keep them at bay.

There was a suspicion of a penalty for Yeovil on 24 minutes when Dan Moss was pulled down and just after the half-hour mark, Charlie Wakefield had a strong shot blocked by hosts’ defender Luke Waterfall after good interplay with Matt Worthington.

A trademark off target 35-yard effort from Dale Gorman with three minutes of the half remaining was about all there was else to report before the break.

The story was an all too familiar one with the visitors having their opportunities but lacking a real attacking impetus. For the hosts, one attack of note, one goal.

Smith was called in to action four minutes the restart when good play from John-Lewis laid the ball down to Harry Clifton whose venomous effort was turned aside by the keeper.

A minute later John McAtee wriggled away down the right but he fired his shot wide.

Wakefield had a shot turned wide soon after and from the resulting corner Max Hunt missed an opportunity to head home the equaliser with more chances in the opening seven minutes of the second half than the entire opening 45.

John Lewis fired in to the side netting after 58 minutes and seven minutes later his strike-partner McAtee tried to catch Smith off his line, but his effort went wide.

Wonderful play by Clifton fed McAtee who was bearing down on goal and seemed certain to fire a second, but laid the ball off to John-Lewis who shot wide from three yards.

The chance was so good the score alerts messages all proclaimed a 2-0 lead for the Grimsby – but didn’t.

Joint top-scorer Ryan Taylor was missing from the starting line-up, presumably one of the Mariners’ COVID victims, but had he been in instead of John-Lewis it could have been a far more convincing scoreline.

In an effort to improve the visitors’ attacking impetus, Adi Yussuf and Tom Knowles were introduced in place of Joe Quigley and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, neither of whom really featured in their 70-odd minutes on the pitch.

Worthington had an effort wide with seven minutes remaining and then two minutes later Yeovil won a free-kick from 35 yards out, which obviously meant Gorman was taking it.

His effort was on target but James McKeown in the hosts’ goal was equal too it.

It was left to McATEE to wrap the game up for the home side when good play from substiute Erico Sousa set him up at the back post to fire home.

Match Report

Success in a contender for the worst penalty shoot-out in FA Cup history, was enough for Yeovil Town to make it through to the first round proper with victory at local rivals W*ymouth.

Having led through a first-half Matt Worthington goal, it seemed like the misery of the weekend’s injury time equaliser to force the replay was banished, until Terras’ skipper Josh McQuoid nodded home in the 87th minute.

You didn’t honestly think it was going to be that easy, did you?

Nope, after a further 30 minutes of extra time a foul on substitute Adi Yussuf saw us awarded a penalty, which top-scorer Joe Quigley (the scorer of three spot kicks this season) saw saved by keeper Ross Fitzsimons.

That meant it was spot kicks. Having seen McQuoid miss his first, Yussuf put the Glovers ahead in the shoot-out. Then, just to further test the tickers of the travelling supporters, Tyler Cordner missed the hosts’ second….only for a bottle thrown by the travelling fans to see it retaken – and Cordner scored.

That was as good as it got for W*ymouth as they failed to beat Smith with their remaining three spot kicks and Dale Gorman converted what turned out to be the winner.

That (yeah, just that!) was enough to put us through to the first round proper and a trip to either Yate Town or Dover Athletic – whose replay was abandoned due to floodlight failure.

Now where’s that Antonio Conte meme?

Having seen his side leak a 93rd minute equaliser to force the replay, Darren Sarll made two changes with loanees forward Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and defender Jack Robinson in for Ben Seymour and Tom Knowles, who both dropped to the bench.

That meant Jordan Barnett was pushed further forward with Charlie Wakefield and Lo-Everton playing as a front three alongside top-scorer Joe Quigley.

With the weather as miserable as dismal resort hosting it, chances were few and far between for either side in the opening 20 minutes.

For the visitors, Barnett fired one over and for the hosts Brad Ash had an effort easily held by Grant Smith were the only really efforts of note.

But, on the 20th minute a great bit of play Lo-Everton beat Calvin Brooks and set Charlie Wakefield free and his cross found its way to Quigley who smashed it off the crossbar.

The Terras failed to clear the danger and the ball was crossed in for Matt WORTHINGTON who headed home.

“Like a young Paul Scholes“, according to Lawson D’Ath on commentary for BBC Somerset, must be the hair.

Barnett and Gorman had efforts on goal following the opener, but chances were few and far between again.

Max Cordner glanced a free header wide from Shaun Shields’ corner a minute before the break. To say Grant Smith was unhappy with his defence for allowing the free-kick would be an understatement.

But, it was Quigley who had the final chance of the first half. He latched on to Wakefield’s through ball but was denied by Ross Fitzsimons in the W*ymouth goal.

The game restarted with both sides shooting towards their respective supporters and it was Ash who had the game’s first effort firing in to the arms of Smith.

A minute later Tom Bearwish, the self-proclaimed “Weymouth legend” for his injury time equaliser at Huish Park at the weekend, sailed a volley high over the bar from a corner.

Wakefield had a couple of opportunities with the best on the 57th minute when he his effort from the edge of the box was denied by a good stop from Fitzsimons.

On the hour mark, Lo-Everton took the ball rounded the keeper but was forced wide, found Quigley whose goal-bound effort was cleared away, and seven minutes later the top-scorer had another effort blocked after good play by Barnett.

The weather conditions only continued to get worse with the wind and rain driving in from the Channel, making conditions unpredictable for both sides.

On 78 minutes, striker Ben Thomson found himself throw on goal only to be denied by a sensational tackle from captain Josh Staunton.

But with just three minutes of normal time remaining a ball in from Ollie Harfield found W*ymouth skipper Josh McQUOID at the back post and he headed another late equaliser.

It was out of nothing to be fair, but there it is. Ugh.

Yeovil substitute Adi Yussuf had an opportunity soon after, but neither side could find a winner before the final whistle.

The first half of extra time was a hard luck story for Yeovil. Six minutes in Yussuf was pulled down in the box with the visitors screaming for a penalty – well, Lawson D’Ath was certainly screaming for one on BBC Somerset.

Then with a minute of the first period remaining, Gorman’s corner was met by a flicked header from Quigley which the visitors insisted was over the line – but referee Sunny Gill (who disallowed a perfect good Reuben Reid goal in the league match down there last season) had no idea, so didn’t give it.

The start of the second period belonged to the home side with the pressure building as they attacked their own fans.

Goodship had a shot blocked two minutes after the restart and there was a bombardment of Grant Smith’s goals from a string of corners from the hosts.

A minute from the end Goodship burst through one-on-one with Smith who pulled off a huge save to deny the former Glover.

You’d think that was the final chance, wouldn’t you? But, no, a corner and Adi Yussuf’s shot was handled in the area and referee Gill awarded the spot kick in the final minute.

Up stepped Quigley and Fitzsimons guessed the right way to deny him and the game went to….well, penalties.

An equaliser three minutes in to injury time from local rivals W*ymouth means Yeovil Town will face a replay if they are going to make the first round proper of the FA Cup.

Having led through a Charlie Wakefield strike after 12 minutes and dominated the first half, the Glovers fell deeper and deeper as their visitors pushed for an equaliser.

It looked like we would do enough to sneak past the kitchen sink being chucked at us, only for substitute Tom Bearwish to scramble the ball home from a long throw at the death.

The home side began strongly with Joe Quigley having an effort diverted wide from a corner in the opening attack.

That set the tone for a positive start from Yeovil shooting towards a packed Thatcher’s End.

After a couple of half chances, the first clear cut opportunity fell to Charlie WAKEFIELD when Dale Gorman‘s quick free-kick found the winger with a sublime pass. He shrugged off his marker  and rifled home the opener from just inside the box.

Barnett looked to have been fouled but referee Darren Drysdale waved play on and Bradley Ash burst through on to Omar Mussa‘s ball, but only put his shot in to the side netting with the game approaching the half-hour mark.

Ben Seymour lashed an effort in to Thatcher’s shortly and Quigley had an opportunity blocked soon after.

As half-time approached, the visitors pressed for an equaliser and Josh McQuoid’s shot just went the wrong (right?) side of the post after a deflection off Matt Worthington.

A cross from Tom Knowles to the back post where Worthington was in an advanced position – what a nice thing that is to write – but he could not get enough of a connection to turn it home.

Boss Darren Sarll will have been pleased with the performance of his side in a typically all-action derby game – just edging it without being spectacular.

W*ymouth started the brighter in the second half and midfielder Shaun Shields had an effort which was turned away by the legs of Grant Smith in the home goal.

That was the only real opportunity of the opening 15 minutes and W*ymouth boss Brian Stock introduced Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Akheem Rose on the hour mark at the expense of Ash and Brandon Goodship.

A speculative long-range effort from Knowles failed to trouble visiting keeper Ross Fitzsimons on 64 minutes and shortly after Quigley had the ball in the net but was adjudged offside.

It took until 71 minutes for the first booking of the derby to be given and Dale Gorman was the recipient – call this a derby? Into ’em, Yeovil.

With ten minutes to go, Jack Robinson came on for Knowles with Barnett moving forward in to midfield. This isn’t us sitting back for the final stages, is it?!

Meanwhile, the Terras were going for it with a packed  forward line and we all knew what was going to happen. A long throw in to the box with three minutes of the four played and Tom BEARWISH and scrambled the ball in at the near post to nick an equaliser.

The away end erupted, the Thatcher’s Stand was stunned. We do it again at the Wessex Stadium probably on Tuesday night.

Yeovil Town failed to win at Huish Park for the fourth consecutive game after being held to a draw against an Altrincham side who fielded a defender in goal for 74 minutes of the National League fixture.

Joe Quigley had put the Glovers’ ahead after 57 minutes only for the strike to be cancelled out by the old boy curse with former Glover AJ Leitch-Smith snatching an equaliser just eight minutes later.

The home side started brightly and had the first effort on goal after three minutes with Adi Yussuf drawing a good save from Tony Thompson in the visitors’ goal.

Max Hunt was fortunate not to put in his own net shortly after. Ex-Glover AJ Leitch Smith‘s effort towards goal struck Hunt’s hip and trickled past Grant Smith‘s post.

Space opened up nicely for Tom Knowles in the seventh minute but his low effort skidded wide of the left-hand post.

Altrincham were forced into an early change with an injury to keeper Thompson. With no keeper on the bench they were forced to bring on  Connor Hampson in his place and it was not long before the left back was called in to action.

A scramble in the box opened up nicely for Yussuf who struck a low effort which Hampson was equal to with an impressive reaction from the stand-in stopper.

Altrincham were forced into another change in their backline in the 22nd minute with Toby Mullarkey going off injured.

In the 45th minute Altrincham had their first effort at goal through top-scorer, Dan Mooney. Good interplay between Leitch-Smith and Josh Hancock set up the winger who cut inside and curled a left-footed effort over Smith’s bar.

The half-time break came with Yeovil having the majority of the ball without doing a great deal with it.

he Glovers came out strong in the second half and Matt Worthington had a decent effort from the edge of the box which was deflected wide for a corner.

Just before the hour mark Yeovil opened the scoring after Joe QUIGLEY pounced on a free kick that was spilled into the six yard box by Altrincham’s (not) keeper. Yeovil’s top scorer finished with the goal gaping and raced off in front of the raucous Thatchers’ Stand.

LEITCH-SMITH equalised for Altrincham in the 65th minute – why wouldn’t he? He was alert after Staunton couldn’t clear his lines allowing The striker to out it into the roof of the net.

Yeovil reacted and came inches from retaking the lead shortly after. The Glovers piled on the pressure from a corner and Hampson in the goal. He saved a header from a corner but put it back into danger and Max Hunt’s head. Altrincham defenders were on the line to clear away from the goal.

In the hosts’ goal, Smith was forced into a reaction save in the 73rd minute, palming the ball over the line after a couple of ricochets.

Quigley nearly had a second moments later with a sharp turn and volley that went wide of the post. Ten minutes from time Quigley’s low header caused problems.

Altrincham were adamant they should have had a penalty a couple of minutes later when Leitch-Smith’s shot was blocked by Staunton. The Altrincham players appealed for handball but the referee awarded a goal kick in the resulting scramble.

Yussuf thought he’d given Yeovil a late lead in the 85th with a back post header that was blocked around the line. Altrincham were awarded a freekick as Yussuf appealed but there was nothing given.

Yeovil kept pressing and searching for a winner but couldn’t break down Altrincham’s back line who managed to earn a draw after defending a goal without a recognised keeper for 70 minutes.

The win moved Darren Sarll’s men up a place to 14th in the National League table, but with an FA Cup tie against local rivals Weymouth coming up at the weekend, Huish Park still expects.

Yeovil Town fell to their third home defeat of the season at the hands of a far superior Notts County side this afternoon. Ruben Rodrigues put the Glovers to the sword with a goal in each half.

dismal draw against Maidenhead United Matt Worthington came in for Mitch Rose to partner Dale Gorman in central midfield. Sonny Blu Lo-Everton took Ben Seymour’s place behind Joe Quigley and there was a debut for Luton loannee Dion Pereira with Charlie Wakefield dropping to the bench.

The opening ten minutes of the match saw little in the way of any action with both sides trying to get a foothold. There was an early yellow card for County’s Aaron Nemane after he cynically brought down Pereira in the Yeovil half. Matt Palmer joined his teammate in the book shortly after for a late challenge on Gorman.

Notts County took the lead after quarter of an hour through RODRIGUES who picked up the ball outside the box and sauntered past Max Hunt before firing a left footed effort at goal which took a small deflection leaving Grant Smith on his knees.

County dominated the ball following their opener and Smith was called into action again diving to his right to palm away Cal Roberts’ deflected shot from just outside the edge of the area in the 24th minute. Smith’s save fell to the feet of Nemane but the Glovers cleared their lines after a scramble inside the 18 yard box.

Yeovil did get County’s defenders hearts racing moment later with some neat interplay between Pereira and Quigley almost forcing an effort at Patterson’s goal.

The Glovers were starved of any meaningful possession as County imposed their technical superiority, finding space across the pitch. Murmurs of discontent grew with supporters struggling to keep their patience at wayward passes and aimless hoofs forward.

The closest Yeovil came to a shot in the first half was in the 44th minute when Dan Moss aimed a cross into the box towards Quigley. His effort was charged down on the penalty spot by a County defender.

County should have doubled their lead before the break as they outnumbered Yeovil defenders on a counter. Some fancy footwork in the box slowed the attack down and Moss got a block in on Kyle Wooton‘s shot.

As the half time whistle went there were boos from the Thatcher’s terrace, unsatisfied with a submissive first half display.

The Glovers made a change at half time with Tom Knowles, who had been largely anonymous, making way for Charlie Wakefield. Wakefield moved to the right with Pereira taking up Knowles position on left midfield.

County had an early effort on goal through Rodrigues who was allowed to take the ball from the half way line to the edge of the box by a back-pedalling defence. His effort was high and wide, though.

Roberts thought he had a shout for penalty in the 53rd minute as he went down under a challenge in the box. The referee waved away the appeal, and there were few shouts from Roberts teammates.

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Ben Seymour just before the hour mark with the Glovers chasing the game. The diminutive midfielder struggled to make an impact throughout the game.

County had a big chance to grab a second in the 60th minute as Roberts put a sliding effort wide of the left hand post. The winger had plenty of time on space after being found by Rodrigues.

Sarll made is final substitution in the 66th minute taking off Gorman for defensive midfielder Mitchell Rose, to a smattering of boos from the terrace.

Wakefield managed to get hold of the ball on the right and get round two Notts players before slipping Seymour through on the right of the 18 yard box. The Exeter loanee struck a stinging cross across the box which was palmed out by Patterson. The incoming Periera and Wakefield got in each others way with the former handling the ball and conceding a free kick.

Worthington had a half chance moments later after a Seymour flick on but he couldn’t get the ball under control and a Notts County defender pinched the ball off his toe on the edge of the box.

RODRIGUES doubled his tally in the 80th minute with the County man rising alone in the box to head home from a corner emphatically.

Seymour had Yeovil’s first effort at goal in the 85th minute after being put through on the left hand side. He was closed down quickly by Patterson who saved his tame effort comfortably.

Yeovil forced another half chance in the 90th minute as a cross from left found Wakefield in space but his volley was saved well at the near post.

Five minutes were added on at the end of what has been a disappointing week for Sarll’s men in front of the Huish Park faithful. Altrincham on Tuesday before Weymouth in the FA Cup next Saturday look to be two increasingly important fixtures for Sarll.
