Match Report

A late winner from substitute Dan Holman saw Torquay United complete the double over Yeovil Town in the first match of 2022 at a rain-soaked Huish Park.

The game had been lit up by a stunning strike from Jordan Barnett from fully 35 yards to put the Glovers in front on 66 minutes, but a goal direct from a corner by Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and then an impressive strike from Holman sealed the win for Gary Johnson’s side.

The result sees us remain in 11th place in the National League table, six points off the play-off places and 16 points off the relegation zone.

Here’s how Ian saw the match…..

First half

The surprise absence of Luke Wilkinson coupled with Dan Moss‘s suspension forced Darren Sarll to change up his side. Morgan Williams moved over to right back, Jack Robinson returned at left back and Josh Staunton took the captain’s armband and Wilkinson’s spot at centre back. Jordan Barnett came into the midfield three and Adi Yussuf spearheaded the front line with Tom Knowles and Charlie Wakefield either side of him.

As you would expect with an away following of more than 1,000, there was quite the atmosphere at Huish Park with the green and white faithful supportive of Torquay battering.

The opening exchanges were even if not a little in the Glovers’ favour and a short corner routine might have produced something had Knowles tried a shot after taking on a Torquay defender rather than taking the ball further.

On the 20-minute mark, Knowles didn’t dwell on the ball and struck a snap shot with left foot that took a deflection on its way towards McDonald’s goal. The falling keeper managed to stretch out his leg far enough to keep the ball out of the net.

The first half was largely one of ‘nearly’ moments for Yeovil. Passes were nearly on the right path, crosses nearly found their man, but Torquay were kept at arm’s length.

The ball did get bundled into the net past the half hour mark, but the official fairly adjudged there to be some robust manhandling of the keeper.

The Gulls had their nearly moment in the 38th minute with a flying left footed volley from the pony-haired Asa Hall fizzing wide of the right-hand post of Dillon Barnes, making his debut in goal having joined on loan from QPR.

Yeovil had another half chance prior to the break, with Knowles selling a slick dummy before shooting high and wide.

Second half

Torquay came out of the break in the mood for it and took control of proceedings, focusing on Yeovil’s right side. The cumbersome Danny Wright came very close to opening the scoring with a header in the 50th minute but it glanced narrowly wide of the post.

Sarll made changes before the hour mark, introducing Joe Quigley and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton for Yussuf and Matt Worthington which reinvigorated things on the pitch.

Quigley’s physical presence immediately caused problems for Torquay. He laid off for Knowles who struck over the bar.

In the 65th minute, the roof came off Huish Park. Jordan BARNETT with no right to shoot, let fly from distance with a picture perfect shot which flew into the top right corner. Scenes, limbs and a flare and a Barnett knee slide followed. 1-0.

Torquay struck back 10 minutes later. Although it all stemmed from a Dale Gorman free-kick. He placed the ball for a free-kick from some distance which didn’t beat the two man wall. Torquay broke and a great save from Barnes denied them an equaliser but did earn them a corner.

From the resulting corner, Connor LEMONHEIGH-EVANS delivery from the resulting corner was inch perfect and it swirled through the rain over everyone into the far corner. 1-1

As the rain poured, Torquay took hold of the game and almost grabbed a second through Holman who drove a low shot wide of the far post.

Gorman was almost at fault again moments later, losing the ball on the edge of the box allowing Torquay to break. This time a shirt pull on a Yeovil defender spared his blushes.

A minute from time, Lemonheigh-Evans played HOLMAN through and the substitute picked his spot perfectly to fire past Barnes.

Five minutes of added time wasn’t enough for Yeovil. Torquay used all the tricks in the book to see out the game as their soaked supporters sang about a battered Yeovil.

Match Report

Yeovil Town‘s 12-match unbeaten run (yes, we’re sticking with the Somerset Premier Cup counting) came to an end at Torquay United after collapsing following a red card for Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Then, to add insult to even more insult, goalkeeper Grant Smith was shown a red card after the final whistle, presumably for something he said.

The on-loan Watford forward was sent off after kicking out on 64 minutes and that led to the capitulation with Ben Wynter opening the scoring two minutes and it only got worse for the visitors from there.

The result was a masterclass for former Glovers’ boss Gary Johnson whose side were far more streetwise (zero yellow cards to our four) and had no problem making the most of their one-man advantage.

The Gulls deserved the win and it was a the first bad day at the office for Darren Sarll’s men since their last defeat at the end of October.

They’ll be looking to bounce back in six days time when Johnson brings his side to Huish Park, but Yeovil will have to do it without both Lo-Everton and Dan Moss, who picked up his fifth booking.

First half

As you’d expect, there were quite a few changes from the FA Trophy win over Woking last weekend with goalkeeper Grant Smith returning in place of Max Evans, Morgan Williams replacing loanee Jaheim Headley at left back after recovering from COVID-19, whilst up front Adi Yussuf replacing Reuben Reid and Charlie Wakefield came in for Tom Knowles. 

All those who missed out found their way on to the substitutes’ bench with Yeovil boss Darren Sarll seemingly setting his side up for a combative encounter on a pitch which quickly cut up as the half progressed.

Combative was exactly how the opening 45 minutes turned with a few tasty challenges going in from both sides in front of a bumper crowd – including a good following from Somerset.

Recognising it is a local derby, referee Scott Jackson certainly allowed quite a lot go preferring to give players from both sides a talking too rather than giving out early bookings. Commenting positively on National League referees is not something we do often, but is allowed in spite of Rule One of the Gloverscast.

In the first 20 minutes, striker Danny Wright headed over and midfielder Connor Lemonheigh-Evans fired wide for the Yellows, and it took until the 19th minute for Yeovil to get their first chance with Charlie Wakefield hitting a soft one in to the arms of MacDonald.

The first clear-cut opportunity came just before the half-hour mark when Matt Worthington did well to dig out a cross to find Yussuf in the box, but his header went narrowly wide.

That was certainly as good as it got for Yeovil in the first half and there were not really any clearer chances for Torquay with a header over the bar from Joe Lewis just before the break the only real opportunity.

To sum up the first half in three words: Not a classic.

Second half

There were no changes for either side at half-time and it was Yeovil who came out of the traps the faster, perhaps with a Darren Sarll-sized flea in their ears at the interval.

Three minutes after the break, Dale Gorman’s free-kick found the head of Morgan Williams at the back post and the ball dropped to Luke Wilkinson whose header went over.

The feisty-ness of the match continued after the break and referee Mr Jackson’s willingness to let things go in the first half always threatened to let things bubble over and they did on 64 minutes when Sonny Blu Lo-Everton kicked out at Josh Lapslie. In the words of Yeovil Town media man Sam Collard on BBC Somerset commentary, the decision showed “the inconsistency of National League officials“. Rule 1, Sam.

Having started the game the stronger, that was the moment where the game fell apart for Yeovil Town. Two minutes later, a back-heel from, Wright found Lapslie whose effort pin-balled around the box until Ben WYNTER lashed it home. The visitors claimed an offside, but the lead was nothing less than the home side deserved.

On 70 minutes, it was 2-0 to Torquay. A ball in to the box found Exeter City loanee Jack Sparkes whose header deflected twice and hit Morgan Williams in the face and went in to the net for an OWN GOAL.

On 76 minutes, Matt Worthington found himself clear through on goal but his effort was turned wide by MacDonald who honestly should not have been given a chance. From the resulting corner, an acrobatic effort from Dan Moss came off the crossbar and away.

The third came came on when Lemonheigh-Evans’ ball in to the box found Joe LEWIS completely unmarked to head home.

Quite how the game only ended up 3-0 to the home side was testament to an outstanding save from Smith to deny Lemonheigh-Evans after good playu from Gulls’ substitute Chiori Johnson with the final effort of the game.

But, as if things weren’t bad enough, referee Jackson showed a straight red card to Smith as he applauded the away supporters.

Yeovil Town’s quest for an unprecedented quadruple continues after late goals from Adi Yussuf (2) and Tom Knowles cancelled out a first half strike from former Glover Tahvon Campbell.

The FA Trophy third round tie proved to be something of a festive cracker with Max Evans and new signing Jaheim Headley making their debuts for the Glovers.

Gloverscast CEO, Top Dog, and all round boss man Ian Perkins was at Huish Park and this is how he saw the game…

First half

On a chilly afternoon at Huish Park it took a few minutes for things to liven up.

A shot from Dale Gorman (who else?) Was deflected over the bar for a corner in the 6th minute.

Moments later, some decent link up on the left hand side, started by debutant Jaheim Headley was nearly finished by Headley, but the new signings tame effort was parried wiwide.

11 minutes in, Woking has a good sight at goal through Max Kretzschmar who was played in by former Glover, Tahvon Campbell. Woking’s number 10 pulled his effort wide of Max Evans’ right hand post.

Somehow the visitors didn’t get the ball in the net in the 18th minute. A great delivery from Kretzschmar was flicked on by McNerney right on top of Evans and it slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands onto the bar and almost in before Yeovil cleared their lines.

It wasn’t long after that the Cards did take the the lead though. The ball broke through to Campbell on Yeovil’s left and his low drive found the far corner to put Woking 1-0 up. Campbell soaked in his moment in front of the Thatchers against his former club.

Yeovil nearly hit back in the 24th as Max Hunt got on the end of a good delivery from Gorman. Hunt couldn’t wrestle off his marker to get a header on target, though.

Alex Bradley had a speculative effort from distance which had Craig Ross scrambling to his right. The Woking keeper got a strong hand behind the strike to keep the ball out.

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton danced through the Woking defence to get a nice right footed strike at goal which was deflected wide for a corner.

Second half

Luke Wilkinson made way for Josh Staunton at half time, in a like for like change at centre back.

As with the first half, the first effort on goal fell to shots shots shots himself, Gorman. He scooped his shot into the Thatchers though.

Space opened up nicely for Bradley a few minutes into the second half and his low effort was spilled by the Woking stopper who quickly reclaimed the ball.

Reuben Reid was replaced just past the hour for Adi Yussuf, as Sarll chased an equaliser.

A finger tip save from Ross denied a spectacular goal for Gorman. The midfielder lined up a freekick from from left side ofnthe box and struck through the crowd with terrific pace.

Yeovil looked the likelier to get a goal and Yussuf delivered the goods again. A cross from Headley found the sub in the box and he got free of his marker to smash it in the bottom corner.

Momentum was with the Glovers after Yussufs equaliser and four minutes from time Tom Knowles headed Yeovil’s second in from Lo-Everton’s cross in front of the raucous Thatchers.

Yussuf grabbed his 2nd on the break in stoppage time with another composed finished past Ross.

The Glovers are through to the next round of the FA Trophy… the hunt for the quadruple continues…

Match Report

A first half goal from striker Adi Yussuf sealed a third consecutive win which extended Yeovil Town’s unbeaten run to eleven first-team matches – and yes, the Somerset Premier Cup still counts!

The game is unable to report on without breaking the Gloverscast‘s Rule 1 of not commenting on National League referees.

It appeared that the man in the middle Ryan Atkin was convinced the 2,024 people at Huish Park turned up to watch him.

We’d discipline Ian for so many references to the official in this report, but we can do nothing up agree with him…..

First half

Yeovil manager Darren Sarll named an unchanged starting XI from the 1-0 win over Stevenage in the FA Cup seven days earlier, but was only able to name four substitutes with young midfielder Ollie Haste away with the English Colleges team.

The Glovers controlled the opening stages and Adi Yussuf came close to opening the scoring. The Tanzanian got a touch onto a fizzed Dale Gorman cross the ball bounced off the shoulder of Aston Oxborough onto the crossbar.

Yeovil took the lead moments later through the same combination. Gorman looped a left footed cross to the back post and YUSSUF powerfully headed past the helpless Oxborough.

It all got a bit confusing in the 22nd minute with Gorman getting a yellow card from referee Ryan Atkin for time-wasting when he was waiting to take a free-kick.

Not quite sure what happened but Rule #1 and all. (For the newcomers, we know the National League refs are useless so we’ve given up complaining about them).

Midway through the first half, as Barnet gained a foothold, Yussuf and the giant Reiss Greenidge began a classic defender vs attacker battle of shirt pulling and handbag had the potential to boil over.

Morgan Williams went into the book in the 30th minute with a clumsy tackle on the speedy Ryan Hall.

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was given yellow in the 39th for a fairly innocuous looking tackle but it was, perhaps, a booking for an accumulation of things. He was given a talking to early on for a challenge from behind that was probably worthy of a yellow.

It got heated towards end of the half, with Ephram Mason-Clark going down very easily under pressure Luke Wilkinson. It was never a penalty and the referee felt that way too.

Moments later Lo-Everton was fouled in not dissimilar circumstances from that which he was booked for. (Rule #1)

The referee drew the half to a close and was booed off by the Huish Park faithful. Presumably for this desire to speed up Yeovil set pieces but not Barnet’s.

Second half

As a purple haze took over the skies in the second half Barnet had a couple of early shots from distance. The Bees controlled the opening spells and certainly had more of a threat about them than Yeovil.

As games go it was a very even affair, but as Barnet began to chase the game pockets started opening.

Charlie Wakefield was the outlet on the right and was full of energy as usual. His low cross around the hour mark drew a corner which the Glovers couldn’t capitalise on.

You knows it’s a bit of a dull affair when people start waking their phone torches about, and on 65 it became that level of dull.

Errors started to creep into the Barnet team and Yeovil looked the more likely of the sides to find a goal.

Yeovil continued to find spaces spaces create half opening. Gorman had a tame effort saved around the 66th minute.

Moments later some neat footwork by Yussuf opened up space on the halfway line and he released Lo-Everton. The Watford loanee carved out a bit of space but his shot went into the side netting.

66.6% of our midfield nearly combined to find the second with Matt Worthington finding his follicle compatriot Gorman in the edge of the box, but the Northern Irishman’s first touch took him wide of goal. Maybe he was too close to shoot?

Barnet applied some pressure late on with the Glovers forced into some robust defending. There was another shout for a penalty which eas denied and suddenly all hell broke loose.

Handbags of the highest order resulted in a  red card for Mason-Clark after a coming together with Gorman, followed by four yellows in the direction of the Barnet bench, in another never-before-seen at Huish Park.

As the rain fell Barnet chased, Yeovil held firm and earned themselves a decent win against an in-form Barnet although they did have opportunities to make it a bit more relaxing than it was!

Match Report

A second half strike from Charlie Wakefield was enough to add another FA Cup giant-killing in to the Yeovil Town history books with a 1-0 win over League Two Stevenage.

But, the game owed much to heroic defensive performances from the Glovers with full-back Dan Moss putting in a man of the match performance.

Following an even first half, the 51st minute strike gave Yeovil an early advantage and minutes later a last-ditch tackle by Moss followed by a fantastic save from keeper Grant Smith kept was enough to see out the tie.

Here’s how another special night at Huish Park played out….

 

First half

Within 20 seconds of the start, Adi Yussuf and Dale Gorman linked up for the midfielder to fire a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Gorman was involved in the first clear-cut chance after seven minutes when his free-kick in to the box was met by Luke Wilkinson, who had a free header but could only direct it wide.

On 13 minutes, a foul by Dan Moss gave Stevenage their first opportunity with a free-kick on the edge of the box. Jake Reeves‘ effort was pushed out by Grant Smith who tipped the follow-up effort from Elliott Osborne over the bar with the linesman’s flag up.

Smith had to get down smartly to turn Osborne’s shot from the edge of the box aside three minutes later, and on 18 minutes former Torquay striker Jamie Reid found himself in space in the box, but his shot was deflected wide.

If the first ten minutes belonged to the home side, the visitors certainly turned up the pressure in the next ten with Bruno Andrade the next to test Smith.

The absence of Barnett and Knowles was clear to see in the opening half-an-hour with Yeovil’s attacking threats coming from set-pieces.

On 34 minutes, a free-kick from Smith broke to Josh Staunton on the edge of the area and he curled a shot just wide of Adam Smith’s right-hand post.

Sonny Blu Lo-Everton lifted an effort over the bar and Andrade smashed an effort wide having broken free down the left, but neither side could find the target before the break.

Second half

Tom Knowles was involved in a strenuous half-time warm-up but there were no changes from either side at the break.

Stevenage striker Elliott List had a great opportunity within two minutes of the restart as a free-kick was swept in, but he could only put his header over.

It was the visitors who enjoyed the brighter of the second half, but on 51 minutes it was Yeovil who took the lead.

The ball found its way to Yussuf who played in Lo-Everton, he fed in Charlie WAKEFIELD who took advantage of a slip by his marker and smashed a shot across Smith in to the corner of the net.

Just after the hour mark, Osborne beat the offside trap and fired a ball in only for an amazing last-ditch tackle from Moss to clear the danger, then seconds later the ball broke to former Torquay man Reid who was clear through on goal but an Smith spread himself and a trailing leg turned the ball wide.

Both defensive interventions were worth every bit as much as the goal for keeping the Glovers in the tie. Absolutely outstanding from both Moss and Smith.

Stevenage did not give up and continued to press forward with the right hand side a target, perhaps recognising centre-half Williams playing at left-back.

Reuben Reid made his first appearance since picking up a hamstring injury in pre-season replacing Lo-Everton with ten minutes remaining, and when Matt Worthington put a ball just across the box, the striker was lurking but unable to get a touch.

It was no surprise when Moss was handed the sponsors’ man of the match and the young Millwall loanee was in the thick of the action again as the game ticked in to injury time.

A  ball in from the right found Andrade at the back post but Moss was there to block the shot again – some player this lad, some player.

That was enough to see the game out and book a place in the thir round.

Yeovil players celebrate with fans at Wrexham

Yeovil Town finished off a sensational November by beating Wrexham away at Hollywood Boulevard, aka, the Racecourse Ground.
Luke Wilkinson dropped to the bench after an overnight illness whilst Tom Knowles was absent following the body slam he received a the hands of ‘Hulk Hogan’ on Saturday.
Sonny Blu Lo Everton and Morgan Williams replaced them in the now customary, 4-3-3 line up.

Make sure you record this episode of the Netflix documentary, it’ll be one to savour, but only if you’re a Glover

First half

Yeovil Town started this game brightly, knowing a quick start would not only banish the demons of going behind early against Dover, but also prove as to be the only way this star studded Wrexham side were likely to be got at.

Within a few minutes of the start, Yeovil were whipping in multiple corners as the Wrexham defence hastily cleared their lines, the deliveries weren’t great, but Jordan Barnett was just getting his eye in for later.

The game always had something of a tense edge to it, Adi Yussuf getting booed every time he touched the ball as an ex-Dragons player.

A side of Wrexham’s quality were never going to kept quiet for long, Ben Tozer, a former Glover of course, was launching his Delap-esque throws whilst the attacking intent of Liam McAlinden and Luke Young to race beyond the home side’s front duo was always a tactic.

Neither ‘keeper had much in the way of a proper save to make by the time the main talking point of the match came around, a needless, reckless challenge on Dan Moss saw McAlinden shown a straight red.

He was adjudged to have led with an elbow long after Moss had cleared his lines and the Irishman was off.

Even with ten men Wrexham had chances to create openings, they had a penalty shout of their own turned down, but the all too familiar sight of a Yeovil defence standing tall took the game through to half time… a moment, finally, for some calm.

Second half

Wrexham made a tactical change at the break, a back four saw Tozer move into a defensive midfield role, whilst Yeovil knew calm heads and a patient approach would be the best way forward.

Jordan Barnett in his advanced role was proving a nuisance for the home side, he, along with Dale Gorman and Matt Worthington harried and hustled their hosts into countless errors.

Paul Mullin became more anonymous and Max Hunt kept Jordan Ponticelli quiet.

At the other end, gaps were starting to show and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Charlie Wakefield combined on a couple of occasions to create chances, the final ball often just lacking an extra ounce of quality.

With an hour gone, Yeovil had another chance to put the ball in the box from a Jordan Barnett free kick, whilst initially cleared, he delivered a second cross beyond the Dragons’ back line, unmarked, with the freedom of Wales Josh Staunton was on hand to neatly apply the finish.

A tricky volley that squirmed beyond the ‘keeper who will feel he should have kept it out.

Wrexham made changes almost immediately and it bring a spell of pressure, for Yeovil to deal with, Bryce Hosannah was a constant threat and Cameron Greene was creating plenty of space with fresher legs than most.

The game was put beyond doubt with ten minutes left, when Alex Bradley delivered a wonderful ball to Max Hunt following another Yeovil set piece.

Hunt’s shot was wonderfully saved, Wakefield saw his follow up blocked, but Sonny Blu Lo Everton didn’t miss the third time, hammering the ball home from 10 yards.

The final few moments were relatively untroubled for Yeovil with the 8000 home fans streaming for the exit, Darren Sarll’s side saw the game out and recorded a fourth successive away win in November.

Match Report

If you’re a Positive Polly you can look at this as Yeovil Town stretching their unbeaten run to eight games (SPC included). If you’re a Negative Nelly, this was two points dropped against the bottom side in the division who had only picked up three points all season.

But, as the final whistle blew at a freezing and windy Huish Park, it was hard to feel too much positive from this result.

A mistake by goalkeeper Grant Smith, who has been pretty faultless in recent matches, gifted Dover an opener after just two minutes, and it took until 77 minutes for Adi Yussuf to touch home an equaliser.

First half

Storm Arwen was not named on either team-sheet but from the opening whistle it became clear the weather system was going to have a say in proceedings.

The first half saw the home side playing against the wind shooting towards the away end, and it took just a couple of minutes for her to show her teeth – or am I being a bit kind to Grant Smith there?

A cross from midfielder TJ BRAMBLE was palmed in to his own net by the goalkeeper and Huish Park was stunned.

 

Having beaten promotion-chasing Dagenham & Redbridge and Bromley in the past two games away from home, it seems like the comforts of Huish Park had us feeling a bit too comfortable.

Inexplicably despite the conditions there was a lot of long ball football being played against the wind, despite (according to the commentary of Lawson D’Ath, at least) manager Darren Sarll urging his side to get the ball to Tom Knowles and Charlie Wakefield in wide positions.

On ten minutes, Knowles received a short free-kick and had a go but his effort was easily held by Josh Bexon in the visitors’ goal.

If that was a half-chance then a clear cut one fell the way of Wakefield eight minutes later after good play by Adi Yussuf found him at the back post but he could not turn it home.

Despite having the elements against him, Dale Gorman was still willing to have a shot (surprise, surprise, eh?) but his free-kick from range was deflected wide.

There was no real threat from Dover, albeit Dan Moss did make a superb intervention to deny fellow Millwall youngster Junior Tiensia late in the half, but equally Yeovil seemed riddled with bad decisions and a lack of pressure on their opponents.

The half-time whistle sounded with some jeers from the Huish Park crowd. Things can only get better, eh?!

Second half

The Yeovil Town players returned for the second half ahead of their visitors suggesting manager Darren Sarll had left them in no doubt as to his opinion.

The manager made a change to a diamond formation with Josh Staunton at the base, Knowles at the tip behind Wakefield and Yussuf , allowing Jordan Barnett and Moss the opportunity to get forward.

Attacking the Thatchers’ Stand, an early free-kick from Gorman was turned aside by Bexon. From the following corner, Luke Wilkinson got a head on a Gorman corner but the ball was cleared off the line by Dover.

On 57 minutes, the Yeovil defence got caught out by a long ball forward and Aaron Cosgrave found himself one-on-one with Smith who did well to deny him before Bramble shot in to the keeper’s hands.

Sarll responded a minute later by bringing Morgan Williams on for Max Hunt as part of a double substitute which also saw Sonny Blu Lo-Everton replace Matt Worthington.

After 66 minutes, Knowles and Wakefield combined to force a corner and from Barnett’s ball, Lo-Everton forced Bexon in to a save.

Staunton poked one wide soon after and Yussuf did have the ball in the back of the net on 75 minutes but was adjudged to be offside.

That led to another change of personnel and shape on with 15 minutes of the half remaining. Alex Bradley replaced Moss as the Glovers reverted to a back three of Wilkinson, Williams and Staunton giving Bradley and Barnett an invitation to push forward.

A minute later the home side were level. Barnett’s free-kick in got a slight touch from YUSSUF – or was it Wilkinson? Or perhaps Barnett’s free-kick went straight in.

Barnett was at the heart of it again with a fine delivery from a corner which flashed wide before neat play between Wakefield and Lo-Everton was turned wide.

As the game ticked over in to injury time, a clash between Knowles and a Dover player led to the winger going off and not returning.

The ten men could not find a winner in the dying seconds and the game finished a point apiece.

Match Report

Yeovil Town made it three National League wins in a row and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games yesterday evening as they overcame Bromley 2-1 at Hayes Lane.

Tom Knowles opened the scoring on 18 minutes to put Town ahead but Bromley equalised just before half time from the penalty spot.

Charlie Wakefield then put Yeovil back in front just moments later with a thunderous strike and Yeovil were able to withstand some late pressure from Bromley to return home with three points.


First half

Darren Sarll made one enforced change to the side that beat Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday as the suspended Dale Gorman was replaced by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Yeovil kicked off towards the terraced end.

The home side made the brighter start of the two teams but the opening 15 minutes or so were fairly tame.

Out of nowhere Yeovil took the lead on 18 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton capitalised on a defensive mistake from former Yeovil Town defender Omar Sowunmi which allowed him to find Knowles who’s shot found the bottom corner. I should point out at this stage of the report – I didn’t actually see the goal as I was using the toilet facilities at the time – but I was reliably informed by the people around me that it was a cracking strike – apparently the best they’d ever seen!

Shortly afterwards Bromley won their first corner of the game on the left hand side which was crossed to the outside of the box and Yeovil gave away a free kick for handball in a dangerous position. The shot was deflected off the wall and out for another corner on the left hand side which was taken short but Bromley gave away a foul.

Yeovil won their first corner on 35 minutes on the right hand side which was taken short and then crossed into the center of the box but the ball was headed just wide.

Just before half time Bromley were given a way back into the game as they were awarded a penalty on 45 minutes. It was unclear as to what the penalty was given for but the Yeovil players weren’t aggrieved to see the referee point to the spot. Michael Cheek stepped up and slotted the ball past Grant Smith‘s left to pull the game level again.

Similarly to the game at Dagenham on Saturday – just when it looked like Yeovil would go in at the break all square they took the lead again. This time Charlie Wakefield found loads of space outside the Bromley penalty area and unleashed a cracking shot that flew into the top corner of the net. Apparently the first goal was even better – unfortunately I cannot be the judge of that!

Bromley made a double substitution at half-time as Jude Arthurs was replaced by Liam Trotter and Louis Dennis was replaced by James Alabi.

It was always going to be a nervy second half for Yeovil. Playing away from home to a team that had gone 12 game unbeaten was never going to be an easy task. We had a slim advantage and needed to ensure that if we were to walk away from Hayes Lane with the win we’d have to put in an excellent shift in the second 45 minutes.

On 50 minutes Bromley won a corner on the right hand side which was crossed to the far post but Yeovil were able to defend the ball away.

Seven minutes later Yeovil were almost in dreamland as they very nearly increased their lead. Yeovil won a free kick just outside the are and Luke Wilkinson’s effort beat Mark Cousins but cannoned off the crossbar.

On 65 minutes Bromley won a succession of corners but on both occasions Yeovil were able to deal with the danger.

With 20 minutes left to play Bromley made their final substitution as George Alexander was replaced by Jack Cawley.

One minute later Bromley spurned a good chance to equalise as Omar Sowunmi put a low cross into the box which found Michael Cheek in the six yard box but he was unable to make a clean strike on the ball and Yeovil could breathe a sigh of relief.

Yeovil made their first substitution on 73 minutes as Tom Knowles was replaced by Morgan Williams.

The final 15 minutes saw Bromley dominate the game with Yeovil performing backs to the wall defending.

On 86 minutes Grant Smith came to Yeovil’s rescue as he was able to somehow hook the ball off the goal line from Omar Sowunmi’s header and protect Yeovil’s advantage.

Yeovil made their second and final substitution on 88 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Alex Bradley.

Five minutes of time was added on and after what felt like five years the referee blew the final whistle and Yeovil could celebrate a superb victory in front of the travelling support.

A dramatic final two minutes of the first half, saw Yeovil benefit from the only goal of the game as the Glovers beat high flying Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0.

A solid defensive display ensured that the first half own goal from Paul McCallum was all that separated the sides in a feisty encounter, this is how the Gloverscast’s Dave Coates saw the game…

 

First half

After an even opening exchanges, Charlie Wakefield broke down the left and went shoulder-to-shoulder with Callum Reynolds in the box, going down under pressure.

Put that one in the ‘you’ve seen them given, but you’d be annoyed if they were given against you’ box.

That lifted Yeovil and on 17 minutes, Wakefield was through again, but this time his shot was weak in to the arms of keeper Elliot Justham.

Tom Knowles has shot well held by keeper shortly after before Reynolds was gifted a free header but it only went in to the hands of Grant Smith.

The attacking threats of Paul McCallum, back after a five-match suspension, and ex-Yeovil man Angelo Balanta were there in flashes of quality but  without creating too much to trouble Smith.

Balanta put effort wide on 25 minutes and the Colombian came close with a header shortly after, but the first half was dominated by the visitors who looked in control and threatening against an opponent with undoubted quality in their ranks.

It took until the closing stages of the half for the game to break in to life. Knowles and the outstanding Dan Moss linking up well down the left, feeding the ball in to the box where Matt Worthington was lurking, only for Justham to intervene at the vital moment.

From the next move, a long throw by Knowles looped over the defence and skimmed off the head of Daggers’ frontman Paul McCallum for an OWN GOAL as the game entered injury time.

There were numerous bodies in the box and although the goal went down as the hosts’ mistake, it was due in no small part to the Yeovil presence in the box.

But the half was not finished there, and moments later Elliott Johnson flew in for a tackle on Dan Moss, sparking a melee which ended up with Johnson getting a straight red card.

If anyone thought going down to ten was going to stop Dagenham from pressing for an equaliser after the break, they were mistaken.

However, the first clear-cut chance came after 55 minutes when Moss’ ball in from the right fizzed through the box where Yussuf was the most obvious target but the ball was cleared.

But, at the other end it was half-time substitute Myles Weston was causing problems down the left hand side, enjoying a running battle with Jordan Barnett, who can feel hard done by to be edged out of contention for my man of the match by Moss, either player could deservedly have claimed it.

But, having soaked up that pressure, it was time for Yeovil to attack. On 63 minutes Wakefield ball found Knowles in space on the edge of the box , his shot was well turned aside by Justham.

To give Dagenham credit for the bulk of the second half, it was not obvious that Yeovil were playing with a one-man advantage.

Dagenham continued to press with Weston at the heart of their threat going forward.

When winger who drew a foul from Barnett with 15 minutes remaining, a fine Josh Staunton header cleared the danger for a corner from which McCallum sent a header goal bound only to be nodded off the line by Wakefield on the post.

From then on there was wave after wave of attacks from the hosts, Weston causing havoc to the extent he was eventually given the sponsors’ man of the match despite playing just the second 45 minutes.

But, aside from a George Saunders’ shot cleared away by Dale Gorman, there were no real threats to Grant Smith in the visitors’ goal.

The exhalation at the final whistle was ecstasy and relief – six unbeaten, we travel to Bromley on Tuesday night with no fear.

Match Report

An exquisite goal from Tom Knowles and Adi Yussuf in each half stretched Yeovil Town‘s unbeaten run to five games – yes, we’re counting the Somerset Premier Cup.

It was an at times ill-tempered match where the Glovers had to battle against an Eastleigh side above them in the National League table at the start of play and boasting some real quality in their ranks.

But, come the final whistle, it was Yeovil who moved up to 13th place with their visitors dropping to 15th.

Here’s how it played out at Huish Park…..

First half

An ankle injury to Jack Robinson saw the on-loan Middlesbrough defender saw Jordan Barnett drop back to left-back, with Max Hunt  and Luke Wilkinson reunited in the centre of defence.

That meant Josh Staunton moved forward in to a midfield three alongside Dale Gorman and Matt Worthington with Morgan Williams dropping to the substitutes’ bench.

Yeovil continued their habit of making a fast start to matches and enjoyed the better of the game for the opening 15 minutes.

However, as has also been the case this season, it was quality in the final third which prevented them from turning their possession in to serious threats on goal.

Despite the home side dominating play, it was Eastleigh’s Harry Pritchard who had the best early chance firing over from just inside the box after four minutes.

The visitors came in to the game more as things progressed with full backs in Michael Kelly and Josh Hare in the thick of it with top-scorer Ben House and defender Tom Broadbent both having opportunities.

A good piece of interplay on between Charlie Wakefield and Tom Knowles saw the latter test Eastleigh keeper Joe McDonnell  with an effort on 24 minutes.

The best chance of the first half fell to Adi Yussuf nine minutes later. A long throw by Knowles was flicked on by Hunt to find the striker six yards out but his header was off target after 33 minutes.

The game threatened to boil over on a couple of occasions with both Barnett and Dan Moss booked inside three first half minutes by referee Sunny Gill – last seen giving a yellow to Yeovil keeper Grant Smith for his ‘shagger hips’ after the FA Cup replay at W*ymouth.

But, it was a majestic moment from Tom KNOWLES that broke the deadlock with two minutes of the half remaining. A great pass by Wilkinson found him on the edge of the box from where he unleashed a stunning shot compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by ex-Glover Nick Crittenden on BBC Radio Somerset.

How different the half looked as a result of that moment of magic. The visitors undoubtedly had the better chances of the half albeit on the counter attack, but – even more importantly – the hosts led at the interval.

The first opportunity of the second half fell to the visitors when House got the wrong side of Wilkinson, who was grateful to his keeper Smith who came out to deny the visitors’ top-scorer.

Visitors’ captain Andrew Boyce headed a Whelan free-kick wide with another good opportunity just before the hour mark, before a neat bit of interplay involving created another opening for Yussuf who could not make the most of it.

On 65 minutes, Yeovil manager Darren Sarll replaced Wakefield with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton with his Eastleigh counterpart Ben Strevens introduced Ryan Hill and the pacey Vincent Harper in place of Kelly and Jake Hesketh.

That sparked the visitors who upped the tempo and and they pulled the game level  after 68 minutes with the first goal conceded  by Yeovil in 429 minutes.

A great ball by Smith picked out Quigley whose flick on found YUSSUF and he smashed an unstoppable strike for his third  goal in green-and-white.

In the 87th minute, Quigley had an opportunity to add to his tally for the season, creating a chance by his own persistence but his shot was blocked by McDonnell.

There was a heart in mouth moment in the dying moments of five minutes of added time when House looked to be shoved in the box, but referee Gill gave nothing.
