October 2024 (Page 5)

Three points, three goals, a cleano and up to eighth in the league table. That sounds like a good weekend, right Glovers’ fans?

Dave was in the away end at Wealdstone yesterday and here are his thoughts.

Doesn’t that feel good?
Our biggest win of the season had it could have been more, a clean sheet and the type of performance and result which we have been hoping for all season. Creating chances and finishing them, defending solidly and never looking too threatened by Wealdstone. We’re up to eighth in the league and that surely surpasses anything anyone could have realistically expected for our first season back at this level. But on the topic of realism, let’s keep realistic. In the same way the world didn’t come an end with the FA Cup exit last weekend, we are not going to sweep all before us because we have beaten a poor Wealdstone side who, on that showing, are going to struggle. Couple this with another win and a good performance in our last league match at home to Dagenham and we’re on a positive momentum – let’s keep it going.

The changes worked: After last weekend, we always expected Mark Cooper to ring the changes against Wealdstone. He did and they all worked. Aaron Jarvis got a goal and could have had a couple more, Dylan Morgan caused all kinds of issues, Worthy posed a threat down the right wing and James Plant looks an exceptional talent. You have to take your hat off to the manager, he got it spot on.

Brett McGavin celebrates his opening goal.

We really wanted that clean sheet. At 3-0 up, there was absolutely no chance of our defence doing anything to put their clean sheet at risk. This was summed up around an hour in when Ollie Wright made an outstanding save to deny Max Krestchmaer and Dom Bernard was there to clear it away. At other times Morgan Williams (my man of the match) was putting his body on the line to do everything to keep the 0 in the right place on the scoresheet.

Can’t we all just get on? The obsession with what is said by a “certain small minority of people” (to quote Mark Cooper) on social media continues. Sigh. If there’s a small minority who will never be pleased, surely that means there’s a larger majority who are unanimously positive or at least realistic. I regularly stand among these people and I can tell you the majority have a burning desire for us to be successful, they are realistic our position we are in as a club and happy with our progress. They travel the country to sing, shout and support – and yes, occasionally get frustrated – whatever the result and the performance. It’s probably a fruitless request but let’s try and recognise each other’s efforts a bit more.

There were plenty of travelling fans in attendance and they were in great voice yesterday.

The opportunity continues.
Yesterday was a great opportunity for us to get another win – that’s back-to-back victories in the league now – against a side struggling in the league. Our next two matches, away at Tamworth on Tuesday and home to Maidenhead are both against teams below us in the table. I would put both in the ‘teams you need to look to get something from’ category if we are aiming to finish nearer the top than the bottom.

Whilst the Glovers were giving Wealdstone a good walloping in that there London, what were our loanees up to around and about?

Well, firstly down by the Seaside, this week W*ymouth confirmed the extension of Will Buses‘ loan deal until January.

He celebrated by helping that Claret and Blue lot to a 1-1 draw against newly promoted Chesham United… (We’ve heard of them, haven’t we?)

There was a quite extrodinary game between Dorking and Salisbury – who had Jordan Thomas in the side.

With 83 minutes gone, Dorking were 1-0 up. The game somehow ended up 3-3!

Thomas played the full 90 and was involved at both ends of the pitch!

Corey Koerner wasn’t in the Plymouth Parkway squad, they won 2-1.

Into the regional leagues and this week Jacob Shore made his second loan move of the season heading to Tavistock AFC, they lost 2-0 to high flying Yate Town on Saturday and Shore came off the bench.

He started their midweek game as well, so he’s already clocking up the minutes.

Futhermore, Tavvy have a nice little media set up, so here’s a post match interview with Jacob Shore following Saturday’s game – with thanks to @LucaJournalism

Sherborne Town were 5-0 winners in the 1st Round Proper of the FA Vase, Josh Haskett was used from the bench in the second half.

Ollie Wright wasn’t the only Yeovil Gloveman to pick up a cleano today – Will Howard and his Cullompton Rangers side won 1-0 against AFC Torrington.

Nansimir Nanev was in the starting line up for Sturminster Newton as they dropped out of the FA Vase at the hands of Oakhampton Argyle.

Josh Ansell and Joe Crisp were on the Wincanton Town bench for their game away at Christchurch FC. The game ended 2-2 with both youngsters getting on in the second half.

The Glovers bounced back from FA Cup heartbreak in convincing fashion with a thumping 3-0 win away at Wealdstone! In a day full of goals, let’s see what else went on across the National League…

We begin in the Midlands, where Solihull Moors inflicted league leaders Barnet’s first defeat since early September in a 4-3 thriller. The visitors took the lead within 12 minutes, however Solihull ramped up the performance and led 4-1 heading into the final 10 minutes; two late goals for the Bees weren’t enough to stop the hosts from taking the three points.

Tuesday’s hosts Tamworth made it 5 league wins in their last 7 games in a 3-2 win over Woking, former Glover Dale Gorman’s goal not enough to salvage anything for the visitors, while there were two 4-0 wins for both Dagenham & Redbridge and York City, over AFC Fylde and Ebbsfleet United respectively.

Oldham Athletic jumped above rivals Rochdale with their 3-1 away win at Sutton United, and also closed ground on Gateshead, as they drew away at Altrincham in a 2-2 battle. Forest Green Rovers left it late to take all three points at home against Braintree Town, with the Braintree socials admin crying foul for the Kyle McAllister winner (I’ll let you look it up if you fancy seeing it).

In a big result for  the hosts, Aldershot Town came from behind to defeat Eastleigh in a 2-1 result, while Maidenhead United and Hartlepool United had to share the points after a 1-1 draw. In the televised 5:30pm fixture, Rochdale were defeated at home in a 1-0 defeat to Southend United courtesy of Josh Walker, and in the final game of the day, FC Halifax Town defeated 10-man Boston United on their travels, courtesy of a 1st minute goal from former Glover Andrew Oluwabori.

Aaron Jarvis returned to the starting line up and got himself on the scoresheet at Wealdstone as Yeovil ran out 3-0 winners.

The number 9 headed in Dom Bernard’s cross in the second half and spoke to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall after the match. He said: It [the cross] was brilliant, the best cross of his [Bernard’s] life, I think. But no, it was, you know, I just had to get a touch on it, it was that good. And I was just glad I could just guide it into the corner.

The Glovers controlled the match and Jarvis felt they could have scored more.

“I’d probably say it’s our most comfortable game of the season so far, from back to front. We had an abundance of chances in the first half.  The scoreline could probably have been double if we stick a few of them away. But, you know, we kept pushing and unlocking the front line. And you know, we produced the goods today.”

“everyone’s got to be ready and got to take their chance when they get it”

With multiple changes to the team, Jarvis emphasised the importance of the whole squad and how, much like we heard during last season’s title-winning season, players have to take their chance.

“We’ve got an array of talent at the front line. It’s not being on the bench or starting 11, we’re all in it together. You know, squads are really important, and the Gaffer rotates the team a lot of the time, so everyone’s got to be ready and got to take their chance when they get it.”

Jarvis said he and his teammates owed the supporter a performance but isn’t getting too excited with Tamworth and Maidenhead coming up next.

He said: “We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves, but you know, we’re looking to carry this momentum into into Tuesday, and then hopefully into Saturday, and have a good week, because you know we can put us in a good position then.”

Three points, three goals and a clean sheet saw Yeovil climb to 8th – two points outside the playoffs – and left Mark Cooper ‘really pleased’ with his side’s performance against Wealdstone.

Goals from Brett McGavin, Aaron Jarvis and Ciaran McGuckin saw the Glovers take the points home from Grosvenor Vale, leaving Wealdstone 2nd from bottom.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall, Mark Cooper said: “I thought we were really good. It was a really organised, structurally good performance, where they always carried a threat at the top of the pitch – so everything we worked on in the week. [I am] really pleased today, we were really good.”

“For us today, it was about trying, trying to get some score, some goals, and then we looked, from the first minute, we looked a real threat. And anyone that was here today would have seen the chances we created, and we could have scored six,” he added.

“They’ve got to be ready to go in, and the boys that came in today did that.”

Cooper made four changes to the side that lost at Chesham last week, with Jarvis, Dylan Morgan and James Plant returning alongside McGuckin in the attack and Matt Worthington coming in for Frank Nouble. The manager made clear that all of his squad have to be ready: “We’ve got a group of four attacking players that have all got a part to play, but trying to find the right combination. Jarvs has been out for three weeks with concussion, and it was a chance to put him back in the team. I spoke to them attacking players to today just said, you’re there competing for three places, and they’ve got to be ready when it’s their turn. They’ve got to be ready to go in, and the boys that came in today did that.”

Jarvis’ goal came from a sumptuous ball into the box from Dom Bernard, and McGavin was in the right place a the right time to head home Jarvis’ cross. Cooper said: You’d think that I told the players never crossed the ball, wouldn’t you? That’s not really true, but we want to cross the ball from really dangerous areas. And that area there where Dom fed the ball into the six yard box, is a really dangerous xG opportunity, and the making of the goal is delivery. The first goal was a terrifically worked goal. We had lots of play, lots of passes, great ball from Jarvis to the back post, and a good run from Brett. But, we scored some good goals today, and we scored another one that was wrongly disallowed, and could have had some more.”

The Glovers have a quick turn around with a visit to Tamworth on Tuesday and Cooper added he was looking to digest the Wealdstone match before thinking about the trip to his old stomping ground.

“I think it’s important that you’re always trying to pick players that can go again, and it’s we’ve got to think about the 3G, there’ll be some that are not keen on 3G. So, we’ll digest today and then we’ll put a plan in place for Tuesday on Monday.”

Cooper also gave his usual post-match to the club media.

Yeovil Town scored three times without reply as they romped to a resounding win at struggling Wealdstone on Saturday.

The Glovers always looked in control and took the lead ten good play from Aaron Jarvis saw him pick out Brett McGavin to open the scoring with a diving header after 26 minutes.

Two goals in six second half minutes then wrapped up the biggest win of the season. Jarvis headed home a Dom Bernard ball into the box on 52 minutes before Ciaran McGuckin stabbed home a third to seal the win.

Dave was in a bouncing away end at Grosvenor Vale and here is how he saw it…..

First half

Whatever the formation prediction was before the game, it ended up with Aaron Jarvis playing as a lone striker.

Ollie Wright picked up the game’s first yellow card after just seven minutes after colliding with Alex Reid on the edge of the box. A free-kick given although hosts’ midfielder Max Krestchmaer wanted more and quickly became the second player to get a booking for his protests.

First meaningful chance fell to the home side withJack Wells-Morrison’s rasping effort from the edge of the box turned away by the flying Wright on 13 minutes.

On 16 minutes, Ciaran McGuckin had the ball in the net but his run was not quite good enough to beat the linesman’s flag. Nice finish to lift it over the keeper though.

The opening nearly came after 23 minutes when good play down the left from James Plant saw him pick out  Jarvis inside the box. The striker  turned his man but pulled his shot wide of goal. Such was the excitement, a green pyrotechnic went off in the away end!

But, the deadlock was broken three minutes later when great play from Jarvis saw him lift a ball to the back post where Brett McGAVIN was there to meet it with a diving header.

Just two minutes later, McGavin almost turned creator when he threaded a ball through to Jarvis for a one-on-one chance only to be denied by a fine stop from Howes. That should have been 2-0.

Five minutes before the break, Matt Worthington slid in on the goal line to try and turn home a Morgan ball in from the left.

Half time: Wealdstone 0 Yeovil Town 1

Second half

It was almost 2-0 the visitors immediately after the restart, Morgan’s low effort looked to take a nick off Matt Worthington on its way in to the net. The linesman’s had his flag up and even after a conversation with the referee (is that non-League VAR?) the decision stood.

But it was 2-0 on 50 minutes after a brilliant run forward by  Dom Bernard saw him then lift an inch-perfect ball in to the box where Aaron JARVIS was on hand to meet it with a neat header.

Three minutes later, a great run from James Plant down the left wing and a curled effort just over the bar. Close to three.

A third did arrive on 58 minutes a corner from the right picked out Jake Wannell who drove the ball across the face of goal where Ciaran McGUCKIN was on hand to prod it home.

On the hour mark, Frank Nouble replaced Aaron Jarvis, who had put in a typically tireless performance but his goal was the most important thing. Hopefully that can help him to ‘catch fire’ as his manager Mark Cooper called on one of his strikers to do ahead of the match.

If you wondered know much the visitors wanted to keep a clean sheet, just watch Ollie Wright’s save from Krestchmaer on 66 minutes. The on loan Southampton man did superbly to get down to deny him before Dom Bernard cleared away the danger.

Alex Whittle replaced Matt Worthington on 69 minutes and five minutes later Sonny Blu Lo-Everton replaced Dylan Morgan.

But for the closing 20 minutes it was all about keeping that clean sheet. Wealdstone substitute Henry Sandat did his best to assist on 73 minutes when he shanked an effort in the same location Malachi Linton’s penalty went on our last visit to Grosvenor Vale (high over the bar if you can’t remember that), and  there were half-chances for defenders Craig Eastmond and Jack Cook. You got the feeling the Stones could be out there all night and still not score.

As the game drew to a close, first Nouble and then Lo-Everton both had opportunities to extend the advantage even further in Yeovil’s favour but there was plenty of gloss on the performance for the Glovers.

The disappointment of the exit from the FA Cup just up the road in Chesham seven days ago seems a distant memory and Yeovil moved up to eighth place, just two points outside the National League Premier play-off places. I know it’s only mid-October, but it is nice to be looking at the league table with a smile on your face.
