SUMMARY

A full nine games earlier than last season, Yeovil Town picked up their first three points of the National League campaign thanks to a brace from striker Joe Quigley at Aldershot Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

The striker, who had scored the only goal in a 2-1 defeat at home to King’s Lynn Town two days earlier, opened the scoring after 14 minutes of some positive opening exchanges for the visitors who led at the break.

But, having weathered the storm of some intense pressure from their hosts, the Glovers conceded with 15 minutes remaining when Corie Andrews’ flicked header went beyond Grant Smith in the Yeovil goal.

Then a direct piece of play (a.k.a ‘a long free-kick’ forward) found centre half Luke Wilkinson inside the box where he was felled and Quigley stepped up to slot home his second after 83 minutes.

Here’s how our Hampshire-born reporter David Coates saw it…..

FIRST HALF

With Matt Worthington unavailable after his sending off against King’s Lynn in the season’s opener, Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll gave a start to loaneee Sonny Blu Lo-Everton who lined up in what appeared a 4-4-1-1 formation just behind Joe Quigley.
The other change saw fellow loan signing Dan Moss come in at right-back in place of Morgan Williams, who dropped to the bench. The Millwall under-23s captain had appeared off the bench two days earlier.
If stung by the criticism of their manager who described the weekend’s performance as “weak”, the visitors set off in positive fashion with Quigley at the heart of a number of  a couple of good moves.
After just two minutes, he linked up well with Dale Gorman to tee up Charlie Wakefield whose effort was well saved by Mitch Walker in the hosts’ goal and five minutes later he combined with Tom Knowles for the latter to flash a ball across the face of goal.
On 14 minutes, Quigley broke the deadlock after a driving run down the left side he broke in to the box and bent the ball past Walker.
As we have been promised through pre-season, Yeovil reverted to what we are informed will be our style of play this season, soaking up some pressure before Luke Wilkinson‘s headed a free-kick on to the cross bar after 30 minutes.
From that, Jayden Harris broke down the other end and was denied by a fine stop from Smith.
On the balance of chances, the visitors deservedly went in ahead at the break and while their attacking play was an improvement on two days ago, there was perhaps a touch of fortune that their hosts were wasteful in front of goal.

SECOND HALF

Unsurprisingly, Aldershot returned after the break presumably with the words of their manager ringing in their ears and started the second half the brighter.
Defender Kevin Lokko had an effort just over the bar before Ibrahim Akanbi fired wide after good link-up play with strike partner Andrews. Neither had Smith in the visitors goal in major danger but against a sharper attack, the keeper could have found himself under greater pressure.
On 53 minutes, Adi Yussuf replaced Lo-Everton and the visitors reverted to a 4-4-2 with Yussuf partnering Quigley in attack and on 63 minutes the summer signing was in the action.
Again, good play by Quigley down the left found Yussuf who got an instinctive shot in which was blocked and landed at the feet of Gorman who shot wide.
When he arrived from Northern Ireland, the supporters of his old club Glentoran told us that Gorman loved a shot from range and there was certainly evidence of that with another flying wide six minutes later,
There also some evidence of the instinctive finisher that Yussuf’s CV suggests he could be……just maybe slightly out of practice.
But, the visitors continued to probe and on 75 minutes a cross from the left by Toby Edser was met by the head of Andrews to flick the ball over Smith and draw the Shots level – and they did deserve to be level at that point.
Suddenly, the de ja vu of two days earlier – a Quigley opener, an equaliser in the closing third – flooded back to the 334 travelling supporters but, to their credit, Yeovil did not give up.
This time equipped with a full compliment, a long ball forward found Wilkinson as a slightly odd resident of the attacking penalty area where he was hauled down and the visitors were awarded a spot kick.
After last season’s exploits from 12 yards, please forgive this correspondent for having heart palpitations at this point but Quigley stepped up to send the keeper the other way. Cue pandemonium in the away end – and what an amazing away end that is at the Recreation Ground.
But, far from shutting up shop at that pint, the visitors actually carved out two fantastic chances to put the game even further beyond their hosts in the closing four minutes.
Firstly on 86 minutes, great link up play Yussuf and Quigley linked up well for the latter to round Walker an inexplicably put the ball in to the side netting before three minutes later a cross from Wakefield found Yussuf, but his shot was tame.
So, three points on the road and while the celebrations at the end may have appeared over-the-top, there was a real sense of relief among the travelling faithful and presumably those on the pitch.
Drink in the victory (and I’ll even give only a passing mention to five bookings including a couple for stupidity) and get back on the training pitch for what is sure to be a very different challenge against FC Halifax Town at the weekend.
Oh, and the BT Sports cameras at Huish Park – deep joy.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll praised his side for a “robust and charismatic” performance following the Glovers 2-1 win over Aldershot.

During the gaffer’s post match comments to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, Sarll named-checked just about the entire team with Millwall loanee Dan Moss, Charlie Wakefield, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Luke Wilkinson and Dale Gorman all singled out.

But, it was Joe Quigley’s brace which stood out for many including Sarll who said that the team were ‘hanging their hat’ on Quigley up front and that he was stepping up to the plate.

Sarll said: “His next step is to be ‘that guy’, we’ve seen plenty of them at this football club. His work rate was excellent, we are seeing a better relationship with him and the other players and his qualities.”

There was plenty of talk about how well the side banded together after defeat on Saturday, but there was plenty of praise for the fans who enjoyed another special moment after the final whistle.

“Great to have that rapport back with them (the fans). It probably started here… we enjoy winning here, we worked very hard to try and win and today was a very robust and charismatic performance.”

“I was it a really great moment, really great with Lee and the flag (the players spent time with supporters displaying a supporter’s banner in memory of Lee Collins) all these things make it that little more extra special, I thought the character of the players today and the physical performance of the players was quite incredible”.

Yeovil Town next face Halifax Town on Saturday with a 17:15 kick off on the dreaded BT sport.

Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 2-1 win over Aldershot.

Quigley, who scored both Yeovil goals, said both he and the team were glad to be off and running at the second time of asking.

“It’s (getting a win) something, off the back of last season and how long it took us to get the first win, to get it in the 2nd game is massive.”

Quigley now has three goals in two games and is pleased with how he has started the season.

“I had a really good pre-season, I felt sharp in pre-season and I’m glad it’s coming out in the (competitive) games… but I definitely should have had a third!”

Quigley has taken on a more senior role at the head of Yeovil’s attack with the injury to Reuben Reid and departure of Rhys Murphy, something which the number 10 is happy to take on.

“I’ve got people around me who help just as much, supplying the balls and being just as much a part of scoring the goals.”

There was praise not only for his duo of strike partners, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Adi Yussuf, but the biggest praise was set aside for the fans who Quigley said spurred the team on.

“It makes such a difference – it lifts the lads. 80th minute, it’s 1-1 and you can hear the crowd signing and it lifts the lads massively. It almost forces the ball into the net.”

After two games in 48 hours to kick start the season, the team will have a little extra rest with a late kick off when Halifax Town visit for the live game on Saturday where Joe Quigley will be hoping to continue in his goal scoring form.

Aldershot Town will be looking to get their National League season on track after suffering two defeats in their opening two fixtures.

The Shots find themselves in the division’s relegation zone – if such a thing legitimately exists after just two matches – after a 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood at the weekend.

On the opening day, goals from ex-Glovers’ striker Kabongo Tshimanga and a penalty from Danny Rowe were enough to see them go down at home to big-spending Chesterfield.

There have been a number of changes since these sides met with Aldershot running out 2-0 winners at the Rec last May.

Strikers Ricky Miller and Ross McCormack, an experiment which didn’t really work out, it seems – have departed and been replaced by what Shots fans will hope are gems from the lower leagues.

Among them are Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, the younger brother of Liverpool’s, Alex, has joined from Southern League Gosport Borough, and centre-half Giles Phillips, who has had a loan spell at the club from Championship Wycombe Wanderers last season.

FROM THE MANAGER

Shots’ boss Danny Searle is expecting a reaction from Yeovil Town  after the opening day defeat at home to King’s Lynn Town and hoping for one from his own side.

Defensively solid and struggling to create chances up front sounds like very similar issues being suffered by his opposite number Darren Sarll.

Speaking after his side’s 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood, Searle said: “Yeovil have had a defeat today and a man sent off, so they are going to want to bounce back from that.

“But, if we can start creating chances we know we are going to win football matches because we are resolute at the back and can keep teams at bay for large portions of the game.

“We have just got to start rewarding their efforts with some goals at the other end of the pitch and that has to come sooner rather than later.”

 

TEAM NEWS

With two games in as many matches, manager Danny Searle may look to freshen up his starting XI with summer signing striker Ibrahim Akanbi in line for a start.

The arrival from Maidstone United could take the place of either Corie Andrews, who has started both matches having joined on loan from AFC Wimbledon, and academy product Tommy Willard.

Boss Danny Searle said the game against Yeovil would come “too soon” for striker Mohamed Bettamer, who is yet to play this season.

In midfield, Alfie Whittingham and Elis Watt both came off the substitutes’ bench against Boreham Wood and will be hoping for starting places.

Full back George Fowler did not feature for the Shots at Boreham Wood having come off at half-time in the season opener against Chesterfield. Speaking after Saturday’s game, Searle said he was “still sore” from the injury

However, midfielder Toby Edser, who has picked up a muscle injury, played the full 90 minutes at the weekend.

 

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

There is a fair list of players who have seen service with both clubs, not least Nick  Crittenden who was part of the Yeovil side which won promotion to the Football League.

He played the first season in League Two before departing to the Recreation Ground in summer 2004 where he spent two seasons making the Conference Premier play-offs in his first season.

The ex-Chelsea winger later returned to Huish Park as the club’s accountant.

The other more obvious link is current Yeovil centre half Max Hunt who was on the scoresheet for the Shots when Darren Sarll’s men won at The Recreation Ground in the 2019-20 season.

He made 22 appearances for Aldershot that season on loan from Carlisle United before joining Yeovil on a permanent deal in January 2021.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat to King’s Lynn Town on Saturday.

Yeovil took the lead before succuming to two late goals following the dismissal of Matt Worthington late on in the first half, something with Sarll says might not have changed the game, but did change his side’s energy levels as the match wore on.

“I’m not a big believer that red cards do change games, but what they changed for us was the energy levels, I thought the second goal in particular was a very tired defence, without the zest to deal with it.

“It was an awful goal, horrendous

“We looked weak, and the only way them lads look weak is then they look tired, we will put that into fatigue”

Sarll also noted that he wasn’t overly pleased with how his side handled the ball whilst also admitting that after three weeks without a game the squad are learning in competitve fixtures rather than friendlies.

“I looked at a team who have got to learn in the league rather than in friendlies, a team that has got to learn on the run, but there were some good things, some very good performances”

“We were depleated, we had already used (new loan signing Dan) Moss with Barnett coming away and but I thought in the last ten minutes the subs brought a bit of impetuse”

When asked about the incident that led up to Matt Worthington’s red card, Sarll said that whilst he didn;t have a great view, he cannot complain with the decision.

“Everyone says it’s a red card… I thought it was high, the players have said it was high, he’s made a mistake Matty, but as I say, I don’t think it affected the outcome of the game”

The Glovers’ manager was asked about the positive impacts of  few of his players and highlighted Charlie Wakefield, Tom Knowles and Adi Yussuf as all having moments and glimpses of what they might offer.

Looking further ahead with a game against Aldershot on bank holiday Monday, Sarll noted the team would be in training on Sunday but that his team would be picked on energy levels with numbers at a premium.

“It’ll be case of seeing who is as close to 100% as they can be for Monday and trying to pick a shape and a side around energy levels”

Jordan Barnett was taken off during the game, something which has been confirmed as a severe bout of cramp, Sarll confirming he made the switch with the Aldershot game in mind.

Following Yeovil Town’s opening day defeat to King’s Lynn, Glovers midfielder Josh Staunton admitted that the loss was ‘frustrating’ and that two lapses in concentration were all that separated the hosts from their visitors.

The Glovers were reduced to 10-men in the first half when Matt Worthington was given his marching orders, something which Staunton admits didn’t help, but maybe wasn’t the definitive moment in the match.

“We are disappointed… It (the red card) was early on, we were slow finding our feet, but it killed our momentum after the goal, our structure looked good, they were struggling to break us down, which makes it all the more disappointing to concede two late on.”

“We probably switched off on two occasions – we’d headed away ball  after ball all afternoon – and then twice when it mattered, we were found wanting a bit”

Yeovil had actually got off to a positive start with Joe Quigley opening the scoring, but despite the early lead, the change in momentum gave the Linnets much more of the ball throughout the game.

“Yeah, it was a hell of a strike by Quigz (Joe Quigley)” Staunton told BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins,

“But it’s not an ideal team to go down to 10-men against, they play it around nicely with the wing backs pushing high, it penned us in

“For the majority of the game, I felt personally quite comfortable, they were never really penetrating us too badly, it was two sloppy goals, it wasn’t like they carved us open, we will look back at them and know theyre avoidable”

Attention soon turned to the future, with the Glovers back in action in less than 48 hours time against Aldershot.

“I know there’s a lot more to come from the group and hopefully we can get games where we can get a foothold in the game and can build and build and build.”

“I think it (the Aldershot game) is a perfect chance, early on in the season.. there’s no dwelling on it from us, we’ve got to get ourselve’ right tomrrow and get to Aldershot and get a result we need”

SUMMARY

Yeovil Town started the National League season with a 2-1 defeat at home to King’s Lynn Town at Huish Park.

The day had started well for the Glovers who had to soak up pressure from the visitors before striker Joe Quigley broke the deadlock with a stunning strike on 15 minutes.

The game turned on 38 minutes when midfielder Matt Worthington was given a red card.

That put the home side under pressure and the visitors got a deserved equaliser through Ethan Coleman with 19 minutes left, before Munashe Sundire completed the turnaround with just five minutes remaining.

Here is how our reporter Ryan Jones saw the match…..


FIRST HALF

Yeovil lined up in a 5-4-1 with Jordan Barnett, Dale Gorman and Charlie Wakefield all making their competitive debuts for Town. King’s Lynn made the more composed start on the ball and were able to force a couple of early corners which the Glovers defence were able to see out comfortably.

Yeovil then created a half chance on the 12th minute after a good run from Tom Knowles who crossed into Quigley but he couldn’t quite get the ball under control. However, a few minutes later, Yeovil took the lead with a stunning strike which befitted the return of the Yeovil faithful.

After an interception in midfield, the ball was played into Yeovil’s new 10 who beat two players before unleashing a shot which swerved into the top corner. The Glovers then had a spell of possession off the back of the goal without creating too much.
The Linnets then had a couple of chances of their own with a shot skewed wide from the edge of the box and then former Town forward Gold Omotayo had a well directed header sharply saved by Grant Smith.
More chances came and went with Rowley shooting over after cutting I’m from the wing and Omotayo heading high and wide. Worthington sent off after a late challenge.

SECOND HALF

The second half was relatively uneventful from a Yeovil attacking point of view with Kings Lynn able to get down both sides of the Yeovil defence and getting crosses in and winning corners without causing too much danger on the Yeovil goal.
Yeovil’s resolve was finally broken when The Linnets equalised on 70 minutes through a powerful header which looped over Grant Smith, who despite his best efforts, was unable to keep the ball out as it trickled into the net.
Soon after, the away side turned the game on its head when the Yeovil defence couldn’t deal with a ball into the box and after a scramble to clear the ball, King’s Lynn were able to get the decisive touch to bundle the ball in.

Almost instantly from the restart, Joe Quigley flicked the ball onto Adi Yussuf whose shot whistled wide across goal.
Unfortunately Yeovil were unable to get back into the game and they started their 2021-2022 campaign with defeat albeit with some positives to take from the game with Quigley and Yussuf linking up well after the new man’s introduction.
