Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins before the game against Weston super-Mare and said how pleased he was to have Matt Worthington back from injury and how much Josh Owers has earned his first start of the season.

“Worthy comes back in, so he gives us energy in the middle of the pitch, young Josh Owers get an opportunity as well, he’s got lots of energy as well, so those give us a solid three in the middle of the pitch with Morgan (Williams)”

“He’s (Owers) just got to see it as another game, as an extension of his working week and not get too hot and panic, he’ll be fine. He’s got a great engine, he’s six foot, so he can get about the pitch and he’ll be fine.”

He’s a great character amongst the group, the boys like him, he’s been patient and he deserves his opportunity.

There’s a change up front too with Jake Hyde missing out, but Bagsman, Rhys Murphy comes right back into the starting line up,

“I’m sure, Murphy, Nouble and Young will get opportunities, it’s a strong forward line, Hyde is not fit, he’s got a tight calf, so those three get a go tonight.”

Cooper was looking forward to trying to put on a show for a packed out away terrace – every single one of the 850 away tickets sold out to Glovers fans.

“It’s a local derby, there’s a big crowd, an expectant crowd from Yeovil. They’ve got some good players, Weston, it’s going to be a tough game.

Hopefully by kick off the sun will have gone, dropped down, it’s still warm, my only concern is, we’ve had two massive away followings and we’ve not rewarded them, so third time lucky – that has to be the aim.

It’s nice, home or away to get the points, so if we can get the points tonight it puts us in a great position.”

Yeovil will face a Somerset side for the first time this season, as they make the short journey to Weston Super Mare in midweek.

The game will mark the first time the two teams have met in a league game, with previous matches being either cup or friendly fixtures. The travelling Glovers faithful will be hoping to see their side win for this time away from Huish Park this season.

The Seagulls come into the game in poor form having not won since a 2-6 win against Bath City on the 15th August. Yeovil’s form going into the game at the Optima Stadium has been patchy to say the least, having lost to bottom of the league Havant & Waterlooville and rescuing a late draw to Chelmsford in their last two games.

Yeovil Town News

Mark Cooper knows his side have to “turn up” against Weston. He said: “It’s just another game for us…we know we have to turn up and perform. We have to be better than we were at Havant.”

The 54-year-old feels that the Seagulls will “raise their game” to play Yeovil as it will be a “big game for them”.

The former Notts County manager is wary of the talents that Weston possess. He said: “They have got some good players, Dayle Grubb is a fantastic technician, [Lloyd] Humphries and Reuben Reid… fantastic players, which we have to respect.”

Defender Morgan Williams also spoke about his excitement of playing in the first league fixture between the teams. He said: “We’ve sold over 850 tickets which is massive…the fans back us everywhere we go, so i really cant wait for that.”

Charlie Cooper is still unavailable through suspension, whilst Matt Worthington could also miss out through the calf injury that forced him off againts Havant.

Weston Super Mare News

Speaking to Weston Super Mare AFC after their loss to Eastbourne manager Scott Bartlett, is looking forward to the game. He said: “We have got a great game coming up Tuesday night and one we’re looking forward too.”

The former Forest Green man went talked about the number of diffulculties that lay ahead. He said: “We have a number of injuries and suspensions, but we will knwo more over the next 24-48 hours, but whoever we got we’ll be ready for the challenge.”

Weston Super Mare have a few key players but captain Dayle Grubb could be the one to watch. As Mark Cooper said, he is a fantastic technician who plays off the left wing. The 32-year old has spent the majority of his career at The Optima Stadium but had a spell under Cooper at Forest Green from 2018-2021.

The Seagull skipper will be available after being sent off against Hemel Hempstead, but the suspension was rescinded and he played in Weston’s last match. Rex Mannings is still suspended for the game. Jacob Jagger-Cane and Opi Edwards both were subbed off during the first half against Eastbourne.

We all know what the green side of yesterday’s match thought about things, but what was the view of our opponents?

Chelmsford’s manager, Robbie Simpson, was happy to leave Huish Park with a point, but felt it took his team time to get going in the first half.

“I thought it was good game actually. First half was a really good game of football. I think in the second half they went a bit more direct and kept us in our half. But I thought the first half in particular was a really good game of football. First 15 [minutes] they were the definitely better side and then we woke up and I thought we were the better side for the rest of that first half.

“We didn’t start very well. It took us 15 minutes to find a bit of rhythm and a bit of intensity. And I thought after that first 15 minutes for the rest of the first half we were pretty good. I though we kept the ball well, he had our intensity. We created a few really good chances, ones we should have done better with really. I don’t know how the keeper’s [Joe Day] kept the one from point blank range out.”

On the second half…

“We needed to kick on in the second half, I knew it was going to be difficult. They were shooting towards their stand that I know they like to shoot toward in the second half. They do really suck the ball towards that goal and we found it really difficult. We didn’t turn up until the subs came on really. We were poor, we had no answers really to getting out of our half. They put us under pressure. They kept a pretty high line which didn’t enable us to pass out from the back as we’d have liked.”

“For all their dominance, they never really threatened us.”

Yeovil Town Women were in a comfortable position at 3-1 vs Sydenham Rangers Ladies in their first-ever Somerset County Women’s League Division One – before the game was stopped in the second half due to an injury to an opposition player.

Goals from Abbie Carslake, Holly Weaver-Coals and Jess Hodge saw the Glovers go 3-0 after a dominant first half performance at the Somerton Recreation Ground on Sunday.

The visitors, who were promoted to Division One having finished second in Division Two South last season, pulled a goal back in the second half before the game was called off due to an injury to a visiting player.

According to the team’s official social media, the teams had ‘agreed’ on a YTWFC win, however, the official outcome is still to be determined by County Officials.

Play was stopped in the 61st minute.

We join YTWFC in wishing the Sydenham player the best for a full recovery.

So, September is here, and with Yeovil recovering for a 1-1 draw against Chelmsford yesterday, let’s see how everyone else got on around the grounds on a lovely Saturday afternoon (weather-wise!)

And we kick off with Tonbridge Angels, who made an example of Slough Town by hammering them 5-2 (at Slough’s ground no less), deepening the host’s worries to start the season as they find themselves bottom of the table. Elsewhere, a massive shock came at Braintree Town, as they hit the ex-league leaders Worthing for 4 without reply, showing that anything can happen in this league.

Maidstone came from behind to take all 3 points at W*ymouth, defeating the south coast side 3-2 with a double from Levi Amantchi, while another double came from Alfie Pavey at Farnborough, as they defeated Hampton & Richmond 3-1 – an own goal being the only dampener on the host’s day.

A huge scalp was taken by, yet again, Aveley, as they toppled a visiting Torquay United 2-1, holding on for the win even after going down to 10 men following Bradley Ash’s goal. They continue to sit near the top of the tree, alongside the new league leaders Bath City, who made it 4 wins in a row thanks to a brace from Scott Wilson, who is now the NLS’ joint top scorer (alongside the previously mentioned Alfie Pavey!). They defeated Monday’s hosts, Havant & Waterlooville 2-0, sending them top of the table with the most goals scored so far this season across the 6th tier (NLS and NLN).

A vital win came at Eastbourne Borough as they battled back for a 2-1 win over Weston-super-mare, who’s strong start has faltered ahead of the Glovers’ visit on Tuesday (let’s hope we can capitalise on this!), while on the east coast, Dover Athletic and Chippenham Town settled for a 1-1 draw.

Taunton have continued their strong start to the season with a 1-0 win over Dartford, making it 5 games unbeaten for the Peacocks as they jump into the playoff spots, while in the last two games of the day, there were 0-0 draws for Hemel Hempstead and Truro City, and Welling United and St Albans City.

National League South table (can we look now?!)

Chelmsford left Huish Park with a point yesterday after a late couple goals saw it finish 1-1. Ian was in the commentary box and here are his conclusions…

Joe Day had an impressive debut. The signing of another goalkeeper was no surprise following Lewis Williams departure, but an experienced EFL keeper who was on loan in the National League probably was a surprise. Day didn’t put a foot wrong, his distribution was solid and he pulled off three great saves. Firstly in a one on one situation, the second a low firm hand from a close range header and his third was a great reaction save to Josh Staunton’s miscued clearance. Will Buse is a good, young goalkeeper, but adding day makes the goalkeepers union stronger, more experienced and has strengthened the defence.

Is there anything Morgan Williams can’t do? I’m not sure I can conclude with a question, but oh well. Morgan Williams started in defensive midfield yesterday, shielding the centre backs. When I saw the line up it felt like Josh Staunton was the natural fit there but Williams took on the role and had another good game. He left the ball-playing to Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Charlie Cooper and was a good disrupter to Chelmsford’s attacking midfielders who were in perpetual motion. With all the attacking talent on the pitch (more on them in a bit), Williams was probably not the player people expected to pop up with the equaliser. #DFILWF might have a new ambassador…

I’m not sure how we didn’t score more. It was two quite different halves for the attacking end of the team. The first half, I felt we never got in a flow. If I saw one diagonal pumped toward Frank Nouble I must have seen 1000. Everything good came through Jordan Young and Jake Hyde struggled to get any joy from Chelmsford’s lofty defenders. We picked up in the second half as Chelmsford tired with crosses flying into the box. Hyde had a golden 1v1 that he should have buried to open the scoring. Rhys Murphy entered the fray, Jordan Stevens returned and Jordan Maguire-Drew came on when we went 1-0 down. It was one way traffic for most of the second half, but I don’t think we stretched Chelmsford’s goalkeeper enough.

We need to find our best attacking unit. We’ve tried different combinations this season but we’re still yet to really make it click up top. There’s so much talent at the top end, Murphy, Hyde, Nouble, Young, JM-D, Stevens, Lo-Everton that should be able to unlock teams. I’m excited to see Stevens come into this team and I think he and Young in a front line will give us more energy and unpredictability in attack.

I’m not sure why people are grumbling about keeping the ball. Yet again, it’s another game where Yeovil recycle the ball, retain possession and work it down the other side to moans of some supporters. Chelmsford’s defence won everything in the air yesterday, Hyde and Nouble got no joy from the giant Winfield. Credit has to go to Chelmsford – the only unbeaten team in the league – who defended from the front and cut those forward passes out. I understand some of the frustration, but we’re a club that’s been losing for a decade and right now, we’ve got more in the wins column than the lost and that’s a good place to be.
