Yeovil Town have announced the signing of goalkeeper Joe Day from Newport County on loan for the remainder of the season.

Day was recalled from another season-long loan at National League Premier side Woking where he featured twice under ex-Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll. He has not played in either of the Cards’ last two matches with Will Jaaskelainen, the son of former Bolton Wanderers’ stopper, Jussi, taking his place.

Day was on the bench for Newport’s 2-0 pre-season defeat to Yeovil at Huish Park in July.

The 33-year-old, who played 34 times for the South Wales club in League Two last season, comes in to the squad to challenge Will Buse for the number one spot after back-up keeper Lewis Williams was sent out on loan to Southern League side Tiverton Town last month.

The Brighton-born stopper is something of a Newport legend with well over 250 games for the Welsh side.

He goes straight into the squad to face Chelmsford City at Huish Park on Saturday.

Yeovil Town are back on home soil for a fourth consecutive Saturday afternoon with the Glovers welcoming Chelmsford City to Huish Park.

The Clarets, sit in second place with four wins and two draws from their first six games.

Yeovil Town News

Following Monday’s 4-3 loss away at Havant, manager Mark Cooper said he wouldn’t let a performance like that happen again and promised an improvement.

In terms of teams news, Olly Thomas has returned to Bristol City after being recalled to Ashton Gate whilst Charlie Cooper WILL be available after his red card on Bank Holiday Monday – at this level, suspensions don’t kick in for seven days, meaning he’ll be missing for Weston on Tuesday.

This preview is being written before the Friday press conference, so we wait for news on Matt Worthington’s injury, he was taken off with what was described as a “tweaked calf”, should he be missing, Josh Owers would be the most likely person to come in for his first competitive start at a full time Yeovil player.

Cooper also said there could be a couple going in… and a couple going out… which means this preview will almost certainly be out of date no sooner than we hit ‘publish’. (Editor’s Note – Cheers, Joe Day)

Yeovil also have former Chelmsford striker Rhys Murphy to call upon, he has three goals already for the Glovers this term, he bagged plenty for the Clarets in 2018/19 before coming to Huish Park first time around.

Chelmsford City News

Chelmsford, as mentioned above, come into this game as the only unbeaten team in the division, a quartet of wins and two draws to their name.

The Clarets finished in 5th place last season and fell short in the play-offs and will be hoping, if not expecting, to be right in amongst the promotion picture once more this term.

Manager, Robbie Simpson, also runs a couple of external companies including one to help sports people move into other careers after retiring and a lifestyle financial planning company… he’s a busy chap!

He was sent off at Huish Park for Oldham a decade ago… the referee deciding that trying to amputate Marek Stech at the knee was worthy of an early bath.

Their Bank Holiday program saw them pick up maximum points; a 3-0 win over the Seagull Botherers down the road and a 1-0 win over early season underwhelmers Eastbourne Borough.

Jermaine Francis scored the winner on Monday whilst they shared the goals around on Saturday, youngster Freddie Hockey got the opener.

In terms of squad names you may know, a couple of experienced heads give the squad plenty of EFL know how; Anthony Wordsworth played a whole bunch with Colchester – interestingly, he’s played 10 times against Yeovil, losing five of them.

They can also call upon Samir Carruthers, a former MK Dons and Sheffield United player – in fact he was sent off when he last played against us, a double yellow card dismissal in the EFL Trophy for the Dons which ended 4-1 to Yeovil.

The Clarets will be without Frankie Terry, he was sent off against Welling in mid August, he serves the final game of a three match suspension.

Yeovil Town Women FC begin life in the Somerset County League this weekend, so, let’s take a look at how the new Yeovil Town Women shape up ahead of their return to the women’s football pyramid.

Background

In 2018, Yeovil Town Ladies were competing in the top flight of Women’s football, facing the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City – sides that contained many of the Women who have done England so proud recently. However, difficulties arose as a result of being forced to operate as a full-time team. Points deductions, relegation, and demotion to the 3rd tier of the pyramid left the club in a difficult position by 2019. By 2021, Yeovil Town Ladies were no more. Sold to the owner of Bridgwater United, they were rebranded as Bridgwater United Women, competing in tier 4. Now however, they are back. A new club formed in close relation to the main club, Yeovil Town Women FC will compete in the Somerset County Women’s league for the 2023/2024 season, as they look to make a quick rise back through the leagues.

The former Yeovil Town Ladies Squad

The Squad

The roots and history of the original Yeovil Town Ladies is apparent with the new side, as former players such as Terri Will and Emma Brazell return to the club. Several former Yeovil/Bridgwater youth players will also represent the side, in Daisy Evans, Ashleigh Woodroffe, Beth Barnard-Irons, Cimon Barnard-Irons and Eloise Morris.

Also joining the side are several players who have most recently been competing two leagues higher than the starting point of the new side, for the likes for Sherborne Town and Ilminster Town. Goalkeeper and Vice Captain Emily Hall makes a fantastic addition between the sticks, Abbie Carslake joins with a highly impressive goalscoring record in tier 5, in addition to many other players in the squad who drop down the leagues to join the new journey at Yeovil Town Women.

Captaining the side is Jess Hodge, a prolific number 9 in the Devon County League, who has already shown her eye for goal in pre-season with seven goals in three games.

The Management

Paul Knight has joined as manager, a highly respected coach from Cornwall with a vast experience in developing new sides. He is assisted by Matt Bennett, who most recently was a member of the coaching staff of local tier 5 side Ilminster Town Ladies, and Tony Rich, former Yeovil Town Ladies WSL Goalkeeper coach who has worked with current WSL goalkeepers, joining from Sherborne Town Ladies.

Yeovil Town Under-18s get their South West Counties Youth League season underway with a home match against Bath City at Alvington on Saturday (10.30am kick-off).

Ironically, the fixture is the same one that the young Glovers closed last season with – albeit that match was played at Huish Park – with goals from Charlie Bateson and Mason Alden securing a 2-0 win in late April.

A number of players who would normally have been named in the Under-18s are now playing elsewhere with Bateson on loan at Shepton Mallet, and defender Jacob Shore and Ollie Haste and forward Benjani Junior out at Tiverton Town and Dorchester Town respectively.

The league’s website names 31 registered players in the Yeovil Town squad for the upcoming season with some familiar names including Alden, Joey Beckey, Max Dyer, Harrison Foster, Josh Haskett and Aidan Skiverton, who all featured to some degree last season.

The alphabetically-challenged Glovers will be looking to get off the bottom of the table with a positive result against their alphabetically superior opposition.

On today’s Gloverscast, Ian, Ben and Dave chew over the 4-3 defeat at Havant and Waterlooville and look ahead of Chelmsford City this weekend!
