Yeovil Town host Barnet this coming Wednesday night (remember, Wednesday… not Tuesday!) and the referee for the clash is Mr Andrew Humphries.

He has already officiated one Barnet game this season, a 2-1 win over Forest Green Rovers, where he gave three yellows and one red – to Rovers’ Sean Long.

He’s been far more card happy for Premier League youngsters than National League games this season – one clash between Norwich and Man Utd U21s saw eight goals… and TEN yellow cards!

He’s never taken charge of a Yeovil Town game.

Mr Humphries will be assisted by Sean Rothwell, Jake Hillier and Lewis Sandoe

It was a day to forget for the Glovers, as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat away to league leaders York City. Let’s see what else went on around the grounds on a chilly and wet Saturday afternoon…

We begin in the Midlands, where Solihull Moors were involved in another goal fest- this time out, they finished on the wrong end of the scoreline, as Hartlepool United came from behind to register a remarkable 3-4 victory. While it was four at York, it was five at Maidenhead, as Gateshead ran riot and kept a clean sheet in the process.

It was a first home victory of the season for Boston United under new manager Graham Coughlan in a 3-1 win against Braintree Town, including a comical error from Braintree ‘keeper Lucas Covolan to compound their woes. Southend United came from behind twice in a 2-2 draw with former league leaders Forest Green Rovers, while a Dan Creaney double handed Tamworth a first league win since mid-October in a 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

It was almost exactly the same case for Aldershot Town; a double for James Henry, a first win since mid-October, and a 2-1 win against mid-table opposition, this time in the shape of Altrincham. Former Glover Rhys Browne got himself on the scoresheet for Barnet in a 2-0 win over Woking, while Eastleigh and Wealdstone shared the points in a 1-1 draw.

There were three postponed fixtures due to the weekend’s weather, as the lunchtime derby between Rochdale and Oldham Athletic was called off, as well as a late postponement between AFC Fylde and Ebbsfleet United. FC Halifax Town and Sutton United both stayed home, as it was confirmed they wouldn’t play on Friday night.

It was a disappointing afternoon for the first team and it was not too much better for those Glovers out on loan whose matches survived Storm Bert at the weekend.

Defender Jordan Thomas made his first league appearance for Torquay United as they were held to a goalless draw at Boreham Wood, a result which keeps them in the National League South play-off places.

At Hornchurch, Will Buse was in goal as W*ymouth’s unbeaten run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat which keeps them both the wrong side of the relegation zone.

For the young Glovers out on loan, there were postponements for Sherborne Town, Welton Rovers, Bridport, Sturminster Newton and Tavistock which prevented them getting any game time.

Yeovil boss Mark Cooper spoke to BBC Somerset’s commentator Chris Sykes following the 4-0 loss at York. The boss described the afternoon as ‘wasted’ and that he’d need to sign a couple of centre halves before the visit of Barnet on Wednesday. Here’s the transcript of the conversation. CS: A difficult afternoon. Mark. What your initial thoughts off the back of that?

MC: Yeah, the game’s over as a contest after 10 minutes with the sending off and then the goal – game’s over. So yeah, then it was just a long afternoon. We can’t make that mistake at the back, you know, we’ve got a centre half trying to Cruyff turn on the edge of his own box. Compounds it by getting sent off, and then they scored for the free kick. Game over. So it was an afternoon wasted. It was a trip wasted. Our chairman paid for us to stay in a lovely hotel last night. Supporters, 340, or whatever of them, traveled untold miles in horrendous weather and we played a 10 minute game, and the rest was just a waste.

CS: Is that kind of the point you’ve made to the players, after about fans making the trip?

MC: Our fans always make the trip. So we, we know we’ve got brilliant fan. I’m about more disappointed with the discipline and decision making of some in some key areas. You know, that’s two more defenders sent off today. We’ve already lost Jake Wannell. You know, the players know that we’re struggling for defenders, and then one of them gets sent off in the last minute with a ridiculous tackle, which probably is yellow, but referee can’t wait to send him off. But for me, that’s just ridiculous decision making.

CS: Ultimately, he’s put himself in that position when you’re whether it’s yellow or red. He still put himself in position when he didn’t need to?

MC: The ref was only gonna book green shirts today, he was never going to book reds. But he [Bernard] still shouldn’t put him, if he knows that as well, he shouldn’t put himself in that position. The game’s over. No point making that tackle. So the discipline is something that I have to address, because that’s too many now.

CS: The fact that it now has left you very short in defense ahead of, ahead of the next few matches.

MC: Yeah, we have to go and sign. We have to go and sign a couple of players, because we’ve only got Morgan Williams. He’s the only centre half. So yeah, we’ll have to go and sign a couple of centre halves before Wednesday.

CS: How frustrating is it for you as a manager when you when you know you’re in the situation, the team knows in situation without Jake Wannell, and then two more get sent off. How frustrating is that it’s

MC: It’s just the level we’re at. Players make more bad decisions than the level above that and level above that. When we have our best defensive unit on the pitch, we don’t concede. So when we don’t have that on we’re in trouble.

CS: In terms of the you obviously went one nil down, down to 10 men very early on. What did you make of your side and the reaction to that throughout the first half

MC: Yeah. But then we the goalie throws one in. Ollie’s been fantastic, but he had one of those games today which keepers do. You, he’s thrown the second one in, it’s definitely game over then, because you’re playing against a good team that’s possession based. I said at halftime to the players, I take 4-0 now, so we got away with it.

CS: And you know, another game against a tough opponent, again, Barnet, coming on Wednesday. You know, where does this kind of leave you?

MC: Good game for us. Good game. We know we have to be at it, otherwise we’ll get turned over. I’ve just asked the players now, like, they just need a bit of honesty, a little bit of humility. And people to put their hand up, and say I’ve let the club down today, and we need a response. So as a staff we”l certainly be doing that. I’ve just asked the players there, that we need a little bit of honesty after that game. And it’s not about, ‘well, it wasn’t me, it was somebody else’. Everybody’s got to have luck in the mirror today and say we need to be better than that.

CS: Is there kind of a feeling of obviously bad results there, but generally speaking, it’s just one?

MC: Not really no, because we wasted an opportunity last week to get three points. With this game in mind it put us in a real position to attack this game. And last Saturday has put us in the difficult position now where we’ve come to York and got beat and now we got to play at the top team in Barnet so players have to respond.

Yeovil fell to a 4-0 defeat at high-flying York City, in an afternoon where everything that could go wrong, did.

An early red card for Finn Cousin-Dawson saw the Glovers reduced to ten men and facing an uphill struggle and the hosts made the most of the advantage with Ollie Pearce grabbing a hat trick.

A late red for Dom Bernard topped the afternoon off leaving Yeovil without FCD, Bernard and Wannell for the next three matches.

First half

The first chance fell to the returning Morgan Williams who headed over the bar from a recycled corner, but his defensive team-mate Finn Cousin-Dawson had a more meaningful impact soon after when he pulled down Tyrese Sinclair on the edge of the box. Straight red for FC-D and a free-kick on the edge of the box. 

Up stepped Ollie PEARCE to rival a low shot under the wall and in to the net. Yes, from outside the box. You get the feeling this could be a long day.

With a gap in defence being exposed by the home side, Dom Bernard replaced Pedro Borges with 17 minutes gone.

The gaps were still apparent with York finding both time and space all over the pitch with the only opportunities going forward likely to come from a mistake. That nearly happened on 25 minutes when James Plant got away and was clipped by onrushing keeper Harrison Male. No foul given by the referee, who did give Aaron Jarvis a yellow card for his protests.

Pearce came close to adding his second on 32 minutes when he beat the offside trap, chested it down and his shot beat Ollie Wright, but not Williams on the line.

From that moment Yeovil began showed some spirit and, whilst not doing too much to threaten the York goal, they certainly held them at bay. That was until a minute before half-time when what could only be described as a howler from Ollie Wright gifted the hosts a second.

It looked as if the keeper had control of the ball only to spill it to the feet of Tyrese SINCLAIR who stabbed it home.

Second half

The start of the second half saw Josh Sims replace Jarvis with Kofi Shaw given the job of running around up front. With Jarvis on a booking already, it was probably a sensible move.

David Ajiboye flashed a shot wide with ten minutes of the second half gone, before Harvey Greenslade replaced Michael Smith with 58 minutes gone.

But, on 63 minutes, Pearce made it 3-0. A long ball forward Fagan-Walcott found PEARCE running with Williams who seemed to misjudged the flight of the ball and the striker ran through to hit an angled shot past Wright, in off the post.

Wright made a smart stop to deny Pearce his hat-trick as he turned the ball out of a corner, but PEARCE got a flicked header on the resulting flag kick to get his third and Yeovil’s fourth with 71 minutes gone.

There was a worrying moment on 78 minutes after Wright went down with what looked like a concussion after making a brilliant save from York substitute Luca Thomas with what appeared to be his face. Thankfully the Gods of fate decided that playing 80 minutes with ten men and being 4-0 down was enough suffering.

Just when you thought it could not get any worse, Dom Bernard put in a full-blooded tackle on Nathaniel George in the middle of the pitch. Red card.

Yeovil Town will travel to Yorkshire to face second place York City in the league this weekend.

Form Guide…

The Minstermen have been in good form this season, as they sit second in the table behind Barnet. Over their last five games in the league York have had four wins and just the one loss. That loss however came last time out as they fell 2-0 away from home to Forest Green.

The game looks like it could be a fairly high scoring affair, with four of their last five games having three or more goals scored. 

The Glovers good form took a hit last week when losing 0-1 at home to Halifax. Although not the end of the world boss Mark Cooper will be look ling for a step up in performance from his team.

Over their last five games, Yeovil have won three, drawn one and lost one.

Key Players…

York City – Ollie Pearce

The Striker has been in superb form this season topping York’s goalscoring charts with nine goals. Alongside his goals, the 29-year-old has contributed with four assists as well, topping that stat for the Minstermen as well.

Arriving in the summer from Worthing, Pearce will be known to Yeovil fans after bagging three goals against the Somerset side last season. Taking the next step hasn’t phased the front man however, scoring a goal every 180 minutes.

The Glovers uptick in form was partially down to a settled midfield that included Cooper Jr.

You could see his presence was missed in the 0-1 loss to Halifax last weekend. After completing his yellow card suspension the midfielder will likely make a return to the starting eleven to help break the game up against a very good York team.

York gaffer, Adam Hinshelwood spoke about how he wants to show up for the home fans. He said: “I’m sure the fans will be out in full force, we’re looking for another big performance, we look for to it and we’ll try to be better than the last game.”

Yeovil boss, Mark Cooper, spoke to the press before Saturdays game. He said: “[They’re a] Good team, very well coached. Adam (Hinshelwood, the York City manager) and his team, you can tell have been left to get on with just coaching the team and they’ve put their own stamp on it and brought their own players in, how they work – they want the ball all of the time, they’re good. Exactly like we do, we want the ball, so hopefully it’s a really good game of football.”

We’ve met before…

The two Y’s of the English football pyramid have met six times previously. Out of the six the results have been split evenly with Yeovil winning three and York also winning three.

The last fixture between the two finished 2-1 to York in February 2023.

Don’t I know you…

The Minstermen have a plethora of ex-Glovers. 

We’ll start off on the playing side of things with York boasting both Zanda Siziba and Callum Harriott. 

New signing Zanda Siziba gets a high five from Matt Uggla after signing.

Both played for Yeovil in the tumultuous selling of the club by former owner <NAME REDACTED>. Siziba made a total of six appearances at the back end of the 2023 season. 

Harriott however only played the three games at Huish Park before seeing his career take him elsewhere.

Now for the off the field. Anyone remember the name Matt Uggla (of course you do). The man who promised a lot and ultimately delivered nothing after his deal to buy Yeovil fell through at the last minute. Since then he and his mum have gone on to purchase York City and after finding his feet in his first season in full ownership, Uggla seems to have found his feet as an owner. 

Uggla has also been know to have online spats with Glovers chairman/owner Martin Hellier, so there may be fireworks on Saturday.
