Yeovil Town 4 Cheltenham 1 – Sunday 26th December 2004

Christmas is usually a time for festive local derbies, but for a long time it was also associated with one thing – the Boxing Day Curse. When I first started going to Huish Park in the 90’s, as far as I was concerned any Boxing Day fixture was a write-off, we never won. My first true exposure to the severity of The Curse came in 1999 with a long trip to Forest Green to see Yeovil get absolutely thumped 3-0 by the Conference new boys. The salt in the wounds was rubbed in by a goal from one David Norton, who had arrived at Yeovil in the summer, got injured, presumably decided he didn’t like the treatment room, and moved to Forest Green when he’d got fit, scoring against us in one of his first games for them.

It was at this point that I learned about The Curse, as Yeovil had not won on Boxing Day since a 2-0 win over Farnborough in 1987. That was during a stint in the Isthmian League (then named Vauxhall-Opel), and in 20-odd years in the Conference between 1979 and 2003, Yeovil only won twice on Boxing Day, both away – 1-0 at Forest Green in 2000 and 3-1 at Weymouth in 1983. In fact 1983/84 was a pretty good year as the win at Weymouth was followed with a 6-3 win on New Year’s Day, with two goals each for Brown, Finnigan and Doherty.

In what you could call the ‘Conference Years’ of 1979-2003, Yeovil played 21 times on Boxing Day and won only three, losing 12 times – that is relegation form in any division. By contrast, New Year’s Day form was generally much better, playing 19, winning 10 and losing only five. Not quite promotion form, but probably playoffs. Although in later years the Boxing Day fixtures tended to be away from home with the New Year’s Day game at Huish Park (apparently at the club’s request), it was not always the case that Yeovil lost away and won at home – against Weymouth in 1988/89, the Glovers lost the home match 3-2, but won away 2-0.

This seems to have been mostly a Conference problem, as in the Southern League days of the 1970’s Yeovil were unbeaten on Boxing Day and won seven out of nine fixtures between 1969 and 1978 (1979/80 being the first year of what is now called the National League).

Depending on where Christmas fell, there would occasionally be games on the 26th and the 27th. Not usually against the same team, as New Year’s Day tended to provide the return fixture, but in 1969/70 Yeovil managed to beat Bath twice in 24 hours, with a 2-0 win away on the 26th and 2-1 win at Huish on 27th! There were occasionally no league games on New Year’s Day due to the FA Cup, which historically had its Third Round day on the first Saturday in January, although these days it tends to be the second. The games against Cardiff in 1999 and twice against Arsenal all led to New Year’s Day league games being postponed.

With Weymouth and Bath both relegated, when Yeovil returned to the Conference in 1997 there was a bit of a shortage of ‘local’ rivals, the first season being played at Cheltenham some 80 miles away. From 1998/99 we got Forest Green for a few years, which is slightly closer but doesn’t feel like it, especially after a 3-0 defeat. The curse definitely felt real then, as even Gary Johnson’s all-conquering team of 2002/03 lost there, almost losing by two goals for the only time that season, until Skiverton’s injury time consolation made it 1-2. It was our only defeat in the second half of the season.

Into the League then and things didn’t start much better, with a dismal 2-1 defeat at home to struggling Kidderminster in 2003. In atrocious conditions which probably should have seen the game abandoned due to heavy water on the pitch, Kevin Gall did equalise to make it 1-1 but not only did the Glovers go on to lose 2-1, but also had to put up with John Williams gloating at the Yeovil fans, as he would do again when he dived for a penalty in the reverse fixture, but Chris Weale had the last laugh in that one as the Glovers won 1-0.

In 2004, and back to playing Cheltenham again, even though Yeovil were in very good form and closing in on leaders Scunthorpe, it was a case of ‘here we go again’ when the visitors took the lead through a deflected shot from Martin ‘Disco’ Devaney. It all turned out alright in the end though, as goals from Gall and Jevons put Yeovil ahead at the break and late goals from Davies and Terry gave the final score a comfortable look. This was a time when Yeovil were on fire, and it seemed like no matter how many goals the opposition scored, Gary Johnson’s men would just score more. Just a couple of days later, they would go in 2-0 down at Cambridge, but come back in the second half to win 5-3. It would be their best run of form of the League Two winning season, winning 13 out of 15 league and cup games (not including the Somerset Premier Cup) and losing just once, down to ten men at Lincoln. In that period, Yeovil  scored 41 goals (an average of almost three a game!) and conceded 19; conceding over one goal a game, but still winning almost all of them. If you wanted to see goals in 2004/05, you watched Yeovil.

In the Conference and below, the festive tradition is to play the same local team twice on New Year’s Day and Boxing Day. This is not the case in the League, as the Boxing Day game tended to be local-ish (Charlton, anyone?), but the NYD game could be anyone. There no longer seems to be any evidence of a curse since that defeat at home to Kidderminster, with Boxing Day (4 wins from 15) and New Year’s Day (3 wins from 11) being about the same. Of course much of these years were spent in League One where the games were much harder so we would expect to win less often than in the Conference. The 3-1 win away at Brighton in 2006, followed by another win at Crewe a few days later came as a pleasant surprise as Russell Slade’s men found form over Christmas and pushed for the playoffs.

The 4-0 win at home against Wycombe in 2009/10 was one of the most comfortable and enjoyable Boxing Days I’ve had at Huish Park, and there haven’t been a lot of good ones! After that though, we went on a dismal run of five Boxing Day defeats in a row including consecutive 3-0 defeats by Bournemouth and an injury time loss at home to Charlton. There were no wins at all until 2017, with a 2-0 win at Cheltenham being our last Boxing Day win in the Football League. The return to the Conference brought a 6-2 win over Torquay in 2019, followed by an absolute hammering at Plainmoor that we won’t talk about. 2020 didn’t happen so that’s fine. This would appear to mean that the 6-2 win over Torquay was our first win EVER at home in the Conference on Boxing Day.

So has the curse returned? Only time will tell. I won’t be putting money on Yeovil to win at Torquay that’s for sure, but New Year’s Day will probably be okay.

Team that day: Chris Weale, Paul Terry, Michael Rose, Terry Skiverton, Colin Miles, Darren Way, Lee Johnson, Kevin Gall, Andrejs Stolcers (sub. Andy Lindegaard 80), Bartosz Tarachulski (sub Scott Guyett 88), Phil Jevons (sub. Arron Davies 68). Subs not used: Steve Collis, Adrian Caceres

Loan signing Jaheim Headley is given an immediate debut in changed Yeovil Town side for the FA Trophy third round match at home to Woking today (3pm kick-off).

The 20-year-old, who has arrived on a short-termdeal from Huddersfield Town, appears to fit in at left back in front of goalkeeper Max Evans, who starts in place of regular number one Grant Smith, who is on the bench.

Alex Bradley comes in in midfield with striker Reuben Reid given his first start since pre-season with Tom Knowles also back in the starting XI.

Jordan Barnett returns on the bench having been out of the squad through illness with Josh Staunton, Charlie Wakefield and Adi Yussuf dropping out from last weekend’s 1-0 win over Barnet.

Ollie Haste is back on  the bench after featuring for the English Colleges FA in midweek, while defender Morgan Williams misses out having tested positive for COVID-19.

Former Yeovil loanees Tahvon Campbell and Rohan Ince both start for Woking.

Yeovil Town name an unchanged starting line-up for the National League match at home to Barnet today (3pm kick-off).

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll can only name four substitutes again with youth team midfielder Ollie Haste, who has featured on the bench in recent games, misses out. He was called up for the English Colleges national team who have a game on Tuesday.

There is no place in the squad for left-back Jordan Barnett who missed out through illness last weekend.

For the visitors, there is no place for top-scorer Adam Marriott, who has become a father this week, or ex-MK Dons winger Daniel Powell, who was praised by boss Dean Brennan in the week.

Ex-Yeovil academy player Mitch Brundle starts in midfield.

Yeovil Town defender Morgan Williams has been speaking to the media ahead of the Glovers’ game against Barnet.

The former Coventry man has had to bide his time before getting an opportunity at left-back during the side’s recent upturn in form.

“I’m really happy, the last couple of weeks have been big for me, being back in the side, now I’m just looking to maintain that and put big performances in,

“When you’re not in the side, but the team are winning, you’re happy for the team. Whatever minutes you get, you want to come on and do what you can do, for the last couple of weeks I’ve been getting 10, 15, 20 minutes… even five minutes, but anything I can do to make the team win, that’s the main thing”

Williams had plenty of praise for the more experienced heads around him, citing Josh Staunton, Luke Wilkinson and Grant Smith as well as Mark Little as being big influences in his progression and didn’t mind having to take his chance at left-back, rather than his preferred central roll.

“Not being in the team for a couple of week, you adapt to whatever position the Gaffer and Tel (Skiverton) want you to play, if it’s right winger, left back, right back, centre back, anywhere on the pitch, I’m going to do my best and show that I can do what I can do”

Williams said he’d be doing all he could to keep clean sheets and in his words “get this club back into the league” starting with the game against Barnet on Saturday.

No less than three Yeovil Town players have been rewarded with a place in the FA Cup Team of the Round for Round 2.

The Glovers beat Stevenage 1-0 live on the BBC to land a record 21st Football League scalp in the competition as a non-league side.

Goalkeeper Grant Smith, and on loan duo Dan Moss and Sonny Blu Lo Everton have been given a place in the side as voted for by Twitter users.

The mythical XI also includes representatives of Kidderminster, Mansfield and Leyton Orient, but Yeovil are the only side with three entrants.

Smith made a number of crucial saves, whilst Lo Everton slid the ball through to assist the match winner from Charlie Wakefield.

Dan Moss was voted Man of the Match by the BBC team and is rightly listed in the side following a string of brilliant performances.

A huge congratulations to all three.

Yeovil Town will host AFC Bournemouth in the 3rd Round on Saturday 8th of January at 17:30pm

Yeovil players celebrate Charlie Wakefield’s FA Cup winner in Round 2

Yeovil Town’s FA Cup 3rd Round tie vs Bournemouth has been confirmed as kicking off at 5:30pm on Saturday 8th on January 2022.

In a slightly odd move, the game has been switched from a traditional 3pm kick off despite not being selected for live TV coverage.

No reason has been given in the FA’s announcement, with other games spread out across the weekend, presumably to allow for more coverage at once.

Darren Sarll said in his pre match ‘presser’ that he was “confused” at the TV ties as Premier League clubs don’t need the windfall of the extra revenue.

However, the FA have confirmed that Yeovil will get a little bonus simply by being pushed out of the 3pm kick off slot.

As per the FA website; “those involved in fixtures that have been moved away from 3pm on Saturday 8 January 2022 will receive £32,500 respectively unless they have been chosen for live broadcast by the BBC or ITV.”

With a further £82,000 on offer to the winner, the Glovers will be hoping for another (record extending) cup upset.

Left-back Jordan Barnett will not be available for tomorrow’s home match with Barnet, manager Darren Sarll has said.

The former Notts County man sat out last weekend’s FA Cup win over Stevenage with an illness and the boss said he was not expecting him back until the FA Trophy tie with Woking next weekend.

Sarll said: “Jordan (Barnett) has not enough training time after his illness, so I don’t think he’ll make it because I don’t really want to risk him. He will be okay for next week.”

He added that striker Reuben Reid is also looking to return to the starting line-up for the game against Woking.

The experienced frontman came off the bench for the final nine minutes against Stevenage and the boss said he had given him “a big lift.”

He added: “For a chap who’s trained for or five times in three months, his first touch is scary and the way he saw the game out at the end and used his body to move the defender, he is a very good player.

“I’m hoping he’ll start next Saturday against Woking, that’s a good time to get half a match or 60 minutes in to him.”

In other news from the Friday morning press conference:

  • The players were given a two-and-a-half day break after last weekend’s win and the manager spoke about using players who have not featured as much cover the Christmas period:
Sarll said: “We just need to get through Saturday without any more injuries and we can go in to next weekend (against Woking in the FA Trophy) and we’ll have to change the team.
“Players like Alex Bradley have been brilliant, he needs game time amongst others, so it’s a chance to shuffle the pack and see a few others.”
  • With the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus forcing games to be cancelled, Sarll said the team was continuing to be regularly tested.
He said: “We  are very lucky with the medical team we have here, as soon as we have a symptom we lock down the changing room.
“But I think this is going to be life, so you have to adapt or get left behind. A COVID break is always on the cards at any points, but I think I have accept that as the norm now.”
  • There was praise for midfielder Matt Worthington for his role in the  goal which won the FA Cup tie against Stevenage last weekend.
He said: “The player who came from Bournemouth was a deep-lying midfield player who received the ball from deep and would never really venture forward.
“Now we have this marauding, old-fashioned number eight that goes box to box, and he’s really grown in to a player he was never going to be three years ago.”

The Glovers’ Trust has called for all parties involved in the talks about a takeover of the club to tell supporters what is going on.

The last public statement from owner Scott Priestnall from a video posted on the club’s YouTube channel in July.

In a statement issued after Yeovil Town booked their place in the third round of the FA Cup, the Trust confirmed that chairman Scott Priestnall had called a meeting  of the Supporters’ Alliance Group (SAG) on Monday.

It added: “Mr Priestnall informed the SAG that he would no longer be funding the club and that the club was surviving on the prize money from progressing through the FA Cup.

“He asked the group to release a joint statement urging fans to return.

“We believe that it is time for the parties negotiating to explain the situation with clarity.

“Alas, once again, we are releasing an urgent plea to those at the table to bring forth a conclusion to the negotiations and complete a deal which is looking increasingly necessary to save a community club with more than 125 years of history.

The Trust said that it had not released a statement until after  today’s 1-0 win over Stevenage in the FA Cup second round because it “felt it imperative to not impact proceedings on the pitch.”

It is understood that two groups are in talks with Priestnall about buying the club, with one group led by Priestnall’s fellow director Glenn Collis, and a second group fronted by Julian Jenkins, a former commercial director at Cardiff City and CEO at Swiss side Servette.

Here’s a timeline of the long-running saga of the takeover talks with the club:

  • June 28: Chairman Scott Priestnall announces he has “been approached by a group to buy the club” – see more here.
  • July 30: In a statement alongside manager Darren Sarll, Priestnall said he was continuing to “talk to interested parties, including development partners” see more here.
  • September 6 – The Glovers’ Trust says it believes two groups are in advanced negotiations to buy the club – see more here.
  • October 12 – The Supporters’ Alliance Group issues a statement calling on Priestnall to invest or sell – see more here.
  • October 13 – A new filing on Companies House shows Yeovil & Athletic Football Club has taken on the club’s £800,000 loan to Sport England – see more here.
  • October 13 – The Gloverscast echoes calls for clarity as rumours grow of consortiums led by Director Glenn Collis and former Cardiff City commercial director Julian Jenkinssee more here.
  • November 22 – The Glovers’ Trust calls on Collis to talk with them about his offer for the club – see more here.
  • December 5 – The Glovers’ Trust issues a second (or is it third?) statement calling for all parties involved in takeover talks to clarify the situation

But, striker Reuben Reid makes his first appearance of the season in the squad among the substitutes with Tom Knowles also on the bench after missing the midweek win at Wrexham.

For the visitors, former Glovers’ goalkeeper Adam Smith starts with Stevenage naming a full complement of seven substitutes.
