March 2025 (Page 11)

AFC Wimbledon have announced that winger Ryan McLean has joined Yeovil Town on loan until the end of the season.

The former Hereford attacker is in the squad to face Barnet tonight, looking to add to the 13 first team appearances he’s made for Wimbledon since switching from non-league.

Wimbledon Director of Football Craig Cope said: “Ryan has made good progress following his ACL injury at the end of last season. I must commend Ryan’s application and attitude during his rehab process.

“We believe this is a really good loan for Ryan to get back up to speed in a competitive setting with a good club, manager and staff who will provide Ryan a platform. We are also hopeful Ryan will help Yeovil have a strong end to the season. We will monitor Ryan’s progress very closely from now until the end of the loan.”

Welcome, Ryan!

Here he is, winning Goal of the Month for Wimbledon!

Delight in Devon for Glovers.

Yeovil Town Women extended their winning run to four games after their victory over Honiton Town at the weekend. Second half goals from Terri Will and Hannah Hughes ensured that all three points were taken back to Yeovil.

Three changes were made to the Glovers’ team, as starts were handed to Georgia Chant, Zoe Ball and Keira Ealson-Taylor, who made her full debut for the club.
In a half which contained few clear-cut chances for either side, Yeovil had the better of the opportunities. It took 25 minutes for the Glovers to produce their first meaningful effort, as Becky Miles crossed in for Zara Hunt, who saw her effort fly over the crossbar.
Despite having threatening spells in the first half, in which Hughes, Hunt and Miles combined well, Yeovil struggled to break down a defiant Honiton side on a particularly narrow pitch.
The teams went in at the break with the score goalless. Despite the woes of the first half it took the Glovers just nine minutes to break the deadlock in the second period. Terri Will headed into the back of the net from a corner, to give Yeovil the lead and score her first league goal of the season.

The points were all but sealed 15 minutes later as Hughes doubled Yeovil’s lead after being fed by substitute Les Spearing with 20 minutes left to play.

Yeovil continued to push throughout the half, as Miles and Hunt attempted to get themselves on the scoresheet but it remained 2-0.

A resilient performance from the Glovers saw the match finish 2-0, giving Yeovil their tenth clean sheet of the campaign and raising them to second place in the Regen Arable Division One South.

FULL TIME: HONITON TOWN 0-2 YEOVIL TOWN

The player of the match was awarded to Georgia Chant for her solid performance in the backline.

Yeovil Town Women goalkeeper coach and assistant manager Tony Rich spoke after the match;
“I’m really pleased”, Tony began. “The first half was hard work, it’s a small, heavy pitch with no width and it didn’t suit our game. They were very hard to break down, we had plenty of possession but could not capitalise on that final pass, but in the second half we showed
patience and perseverance and it paid off.

“We created numerous chances in the second half and probably should have won by a couple of goals more, but a great header by Terri and a good finish by Hannah and we’re really pleased.
Tony looked ahead to next week’s clash with Weston-super-Mare.

“It doesn’t help us the fact we haven’t played for a couple weeks, continuity is key in football, so it’s good to get a game today and next week. Hopefully on a pitch that we can play football on, we can play our passing game, play to our strengths and hopefully we can take
the game to Weston and come out on top.”

Yeovil Town Women return to action next Sunday 9th March, as they travel to The Optima Stadium to face Weston-super-Mare 14:00 KO.

Yeovil made it three games without defeat as they drew 2-2 at home against Southend United. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on, as well as taking a look at the remaining NL teams in the FA Trophy…

We begin with the basement boys Ebbsfleet United, as their wait for a second win of the season continued with defeat at home to Tamworth. The hosts actually took the lead, but three goals in five minutes shortly before half-time left the Fleet with a hill to climb. They pulled one back but fell to a 23rd league defeat in 35 games. Dagenham & Redbridge’s relegation concerns were deepened with a home defeat to Boston United, the hosts took the lead through Josh Rees but the visitors came from behind to secure a huge three points in their own battle against the drop.

At the other end of the table, Barnet continued their march to the title with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Oldham Athletic, while Forest Green Rovers got back to winning ways in a 2-0 win against Maidenhead United. In the evening kickoff, AFC Fylde came from behind to secure a point against Gateshead in a 1-1 draw. York City left Durham with all three points, as they won 1-0 at Hartlepool United, while Braintree Town did the double over Eastleigh in a 1-0 win.

Into the FA Trophy, where six of the last eight teams were National League sides. Woking kept themselves in the tournament by the skin of their teeth as they edged a penalty shootout against Oxford City, in which ‘keeper Will Jääskeläinen saved three penalties and scored the winner for the Cardinals. It was the end of the road for Step 8 side Sittingbourne, as they lost at home to Aldershot Town. A surprise came near London, as Sutton United lost 2-0 at home against National League North side Spennymoor Town, and finally, Rochdale made it to the semi-finals with a home win against Altrincham.

National League table

Yeovil Town have never won a game in which Andrew Miller took charge – actually, we’ve not even so much as scored.

Now, as far as I can tell, none of those defeats are his fault, but we were looking for something to hold on to away at the League leaders and didn’t find what we wanted.

The last time we saw him was back in the 2021/22 season, a 2-0 away defeat to Grimsby where the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot and Dale Gorman got booked (shock!)

There was 2-0 win for Notts County the season before and a rather disappointing 3-0 loss to Harrogate the season before that. Myles Hyppolyte’s red card salting the wounds in North Yorkshire.

As for this season, in eight National League games, he’s dished out 32 yellow cards and one red, with York City’s tap-in merchant Ollie Pearce getting an early bath against Dagenham.

Five of those yellows have come in a Barnet game, their 2-0 home win over AFC Fylde saw a trio of Bees booked.

He’s also taken charge of some relatively high profile games in the Premier League 2 set up, including a Manchester derby and Liverpool U21s v their Man City counterparts, so clearly, he’s very highly thought of.

Mr Miller will be assisted by David Harrison and Stephen Brown, Jack Bloxham will patrol the dug outs.

The National League wasn’t short of goals this past Saturday and it wasn’t just the Glovers’ first team who ended up as a stalemate.

Jordan Thomas was in the starting line up for Torquay United, who went 2-0 up and were leading beyond the 80th minute, before two late goals dragged Boreham Wood back into the game to share the points in a big game at the top of the National League South.

W*ymouth, with Will Buse between the sticks, must have thought they were in for a vital three points at the other end of the table when Malachi Linton put them 2-1 up against Hornchurch, but in the end, Linton was needed to salvage a point late on – 3-3 on the day.

Corey Koerner was on the Glovers bench, so wasn’t involved for Sherborne, however Joe Crisp was on their bench, Jacob Shore was unavailable for Wellington.

George Geraghty scored from the bench for Bridport as they walloped Torrington 6-0.

It’s back on the road for Yeovil on Tuesday night as they face the tough task of going to top of table Barnet in the league.

Form Guide…

The Bees have been superb over their last five fixtures with four wins and a draw. In fact, the London side haven’t been beaten in the league in 20 matches, their last loss coming to York on the 22nd October.

If a 20-game unbeaten streak in the doesn’t suggest a tough challenge for the travelling Yeovil side, then Barnet’s last match should. The Bees won comfortably away at Oldham Athletic, beating the former Premier League side 3-0 at the weekend.

The Glovers have picked up their form over the last five games with, two wins, two draws and a loss. The last three games in particular have been where the Somerset side have really changed the fortunes around, after two month period without a win. Those three games have seen wins against Tamworth, Maidenhead and an unlucky draw at home to Southend United.

The game against the Shrimpers was the most recent for Yeovil, and after going behind early they quickly responded to go level, and then take the lead. The three points looked secured before a 94th minute equaliser from Southend scuppered thoughts of three wins on the trot.

Yeovil Town vs Southend United

Key Players…

Barnet – Callum Stead

With a team top of the league, every player they have will cause danger, but none more so than Callum Stead for Barnet. Stead has been a prolific frontman for the Bees, in the 32 games he has played this season he has bagged 11 goals and assisted on six occasions.

Having signed on free transfer from Brackley Town in the summer of 2023, he has been a bit of a find for London team. In his time at Barnet he has made 69 appearances scoring 26 goals. Whoever is at the back for Yeovil, Stead will be tough to handle.

Yeovil – Alex Whittle

When Alex Whittle has played this season his quality has been on show. The Scouser isn’t your Andy Robertson type of left-back with 10 assists a season, but he defends extremely well. What has let the 31-year old down is his ability to stay fit this season, but since coming back from his last set back in January, Whittle has played every game.

Since joining from York nearly two years ago, the Scouser has been a key asset to Mark Cooper and will hopefully be key in the run for the Glovers.

That’s what he said…

Barnet boss Dean Brennan gave his thoughts ahead of the game to club media. He said: ” It’s going to be a difficult game, Mark Cooper is a top manager and they’re well organised. We will focus on what we have got to do and we think we can halt them, it will be a tricky game.”

Yeovil manager Mark Cooper spoke to press after Saturdays draw, where he gave his thoughts on the midweek fixture. He said: ” It will be tough, but the boys that have put their hand up today to march forward, were incredible and they’ll have to do it again on Tuesday.”

Mark Cooper speaks to BBC Radio Somerset’s Jack Killah after the 2-2 draw with Southend United.

We’ve met before…

Yeovil and Barnet have met each other many a time over the years. The first game between the two clubs was in 1967 when the side drew 1-1. Since that first encounter the Glovers and Bees have battled it out a further 63 times, with Yeovil winning 26 times and Barnet winning 25 times, with another 12 draws.

Danny Collinge’s header finds the far corner

Last time the two sides came together was November last year when Barnet took home all three points in a 1-2 win at Huish Park. Yeovil’s goal came through James Plant and the Bees two coming from Yeovil-born Ryan Glover and Danny Collinge.

Don’t I know you?…

Billy Clifford is the first of a couple of former Yeovil players in the Barnet squad. Clifford graced Huish Park back in the 13/14 season, playing a total of one game whilst on loan from Chelsea.

Another ex-player of ours is Rhys Browne, the Antiguan and Barbudan international spent two year in Somerset from 2017 to 2019. During his time in Yeovil, Browne played 71 times, his most appearances for a single club.

Somebody who has isn’t an ex-Glover but is still a Glover, if name only, is Ryan Glover. Besides the sharing of names the 24-year-old has another connection to Yeovil, the fact he was born here. Lets hope he doesn’t play to well in front of his hometown team – again!

Who’s been naughty then?…

Another game with no one suspended.

Yeovil were so close to picking up the three points against Southend United at Huish Park yesterday. Ian was at Huish Park for it and here are his conclusions.

It couldn’t have been a worse start. Folks were barely in their seats before Southend opened the scoring. A move down the left and a simple cross in the box found Charley Kendall who had freedom of Huish Park to pick his spot. The visitors continued to press forward and could have scored two or three in the opening 12 minutes and you’d have been forgiven for thinking you were in for a long afternoon and Huish Park.

We showed tremendous character to turn it around so quickly. Many would have been fearing the worst after conceding so early, but this isn’t the Yeovil Town of January, this is the Yeovil Town of late February. The first was a bit of a gift after a raking forward pass from Charlie Cooper wasn’t dealt with by the Shrimpers’ defence. Kyrell Wilson showed composure to beat the goalkeeper and bring Yeovil level. Not long after the game had turned on its head with Ciaran McGuckin setting up Frank Nouble with the easiest of finishes to make it 2-1. The Guvnor clearly enjoyed scoring against his former club’s Essex rivals.

Charlie Cooper earned his man of the match award. He marshalled the central defensive three for an entire half yesterday. To perform at that level in a position he’s unfamiliar with was impressive. Like him or not, he’s vital to this team on the pitch and since the departure of Worthington, he has to step in as a standard-setter in the heart of the midfield…and in defence?

We couldn’t hang on. We shifted to a back five before half time and spent the entire second half repelling Southend. For all Southend’s possession, they barely tested Aidan Stone in the Yeovil goal and that was down to the hard work of Yeovil’s outfield players. The body language of those players when the equaliser goes in painted the picture of devastation. For a depleted group to work so hard to hang on to three points to only get one with barely a kick left must have been a real kicker. Clearly there’s an argument that when you sit back for half of a game you get what you deserve, but…

Injuries are taking their toll. There’s no Wannell, Williams, Jarvis, Maddox available and Ciaran McGuckin hobbled off with “tight calves”, to the annoyance of Mark Cooper. Cooper said he needs two in before Tuesday’s visit to Barnet and if someone can get them in, it’s him. It’s clear how important depth in the National League, and I feel like we had more depth last season than this. Clearly it costs more to maintain a squad that is capable of the National League rigours than in National League South, but with a mid-table finish looking likely, the promise of building on that next season will require greater depth in the squad.
