August 2024 (Page 2)

Tom Bailey is back with transfer round up of the National League, including Glovers corner…

Glovers’ Corner

Before we dive into the National League ins and outs, let’s look at the former Glovers that have moved about in the last couple of weeks. We may miss a few, so if any of you see any we may have missed, tag us on Facebook or Twitter (or X), or leave a comment below and we’ll add them in the next week’s round-up!

A few on the move this week, one player that has found themselves in limbo is Andros Townsend. The 33 year old, who made 10 league appearances for the Glovers in 2009, signed for Antalyaspor this week, however they’re under a transfer ban so are battling to confirm his arrival. A move is expected, even if he doesn’t get to play immediately… meanwhile, in the National League, Otis Khan has signed for Oldham Athletic this week, following his departure from Grimsby Town in the summer.

Sam Johnstone signs for Wolves in the Premier League from Crystal Palace in a £10million move, and finally, Callum Rowe (remember him?) has joined National League North side Radcliffe.

Yeovil Town new boy Josh Sims has said that his team-mates are working hard in training to eradicate the mistakes which have cost them in their last two matches.

The Glovers suffered a double defeat over the August Bank Holiday weekend, going down 3-1 at Gateshead last weekend and then losing to a late goal at home to Rochdale on Monday, with sloppy goals and a failure to be ruthless in front of goal a major factor in both results.

But, the winger, who joined a fortnight ago having been with Scottish Premiership side Ross County for the previous two seasons, said he did not believe the team was far away from turning performances in to results.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the trip to Boston United this weekend, he said: “It is a difficult league and it is so important to pick up results in your home matches. These games (like Rochdale at home) are the ones where you need to be picking up at least a draw if you want to do well because everyone can beat everyone. We were disappointed not to get three points, we never looked at it as a game we could afford to draw, it was three points dropped because we had some big chances where we should have been more ruthless.

It shows where we are as a side, the losses this season we could have won every one, because we have been conceding disappointing goals but we have been creating a lot of chances, we just have to put the ball in the net and stop giving away sloppy goals in the manner we have been. We are working on that in training and fingers cross we can put it right on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was born in Yeovil and grew up in Gillingham, across the Somerset-Dorset border, and recalled visiting Huish Park as a youngster during the period when the club was promoted to the Championship in 2013. He joined the Southampton youth set-up as a 14-year-old, eventually making his Premier League debut in November 2016, before having loan spells at Reading, Doncaster Rovers and a stint in Major League Soccer at New York Red Bulls, before being released in the summer of 2021 and joining Ross County.

As the father of two young sons, he admitted the lure of having his family close to home than the 600-mile journey to the Scottish Highlands was a bit part of the appeal, but said that his conversations were manager Mark Cooper were another factor in his decision to choose a move back to the South West.

He said: “I came down earlier in the week I signed and had a good chat with the manager, staff and the players and watched one of their training sessions. I was really impressed with what the manager (Mark Cooper) wants, the style he wants to play, and the standard. We have a good team and I think we can achieve good things at this level. The standard is much better than people imagine, there’s some very good players in this league and the football is not that different (to the Scottish Premiership). We play good football here at Yeovil and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to come here. The way I want to play football aligns with what the manager wants and that was a big part in why I came to Yeovil.

Sims added: “I left Ross County and came home and was weighing up my options, so I had a long break over the summer which meant I was not training and therefore I was quite far behind (the other players) when I signed. I didn’t have any pre-season minutes or training, so I have been thrown in at the deep end, but the only way to get match fit is to play games. The manager is aware of that and has said ‘we are not going to chuck you in for 90 minutes straight away’, so I am still not 100% match fit and it is only going to get better by playing games. I know Michael Smith from playing against him in Scotland, Matt Worthington from youth football, so I know some faces and the boys have been brilliantly with me.”

Having made his debut with a brief cameo in the second half of the 1-0 win at Braintree Town in the second match of the season, he has started all Yeovil’s following three matches with the 64 minutes he had on the pitch against Rochdale on Monday being his longest outing since joining.

Asked about what he hoped to bring to the side, he added: “I am not a physically big player, so I want the ball at my feet and be able to pass, move and create chances that way with my agility and speed. The manager explained to me the role he sees me playing in the team and it is one I enjoy doing, so it worked out well. Location-wise it worked for me with having family in the area, when you are moving from the top of Scotland, back here was a big factor. But what the manager wants to do on the football side was also a massive factor.

Yeovil are back in action on Saturday as they head north to Boston United in a clash that sees two of the newly promoted teams face off.

Form Guide…

The Pilgrims have not started the season well with just one win and draw from five games. The four points that they have picked up however have been in their last two games, with their most recent result being a 2-0 win over York City.

Yeovil haven’t exactly been in a purple patch either having lost their two previous fixtures. Bank holiday Monday saw the Glovers come up against Rochdale who they kept quiet until 90+1 minute, ultimately losing 0-1.

Key Players…

Boston United – Michael Bostwick

The centre back was dropped after the first two games in which Boston got beat 3-0 and 4-0. However, he has been solid over since coming back into the team over the last two games for the Pilgrims, only conceding one goal in that time.

if Yeovil are to get back in the goals they will need to negate Bostwick’s experience and calmness at the back. Now aged 36 he has little in his legs but still provides the back bone to this Pilgrims team.

Yeovil Town – Frank Nouble

📸 Gary Brown

It’s tough when the team hasn’t started great for players to find form and a rhythm to the season.

Nouble hasn’t got off the mark this season but he is still vital for the Glovers on field success this season. Having bagged 11 goals last season, the big man has shown he has the quality to contribute at this level, and if the Huish Parks side want their form to pick up Nouble will be crucial to that.

Thats what he said…

Pilgrims first-team coach, Joe Simpson, is expecting a tough game on Saturday. He said: “Every game is difficult, Yeovil are another full time team that were in the [Football] League  not to long ago, but they’re games we’re going to embrace and enjoy. We know that if we are at it, we give ourselves a good chance to get a result.”

Yeovil boss Mark Cooper gave his thoughts on the Boston game as he spoke to the media on Thursday. He said: “They had a great result at York, but we have to concentrate on the things that make us good. We are not going to throw everything out of the window because Boston beat York and we lost to Rochdale.”

We’ve met before…

We have to go all the way back to 2005 for the last time these two teams met in a League Two fixture. Yeovil won that game 2-1 with both goals scored by captain fantastic, Terry Skiverton.

The current head to head record has the Glovers with four wins to Bostons two.

Don’t I know you…

We love an ex Yeovil player here at Gloverscast and Boston boast one in their ranks.

Cast your minds back to 2008, Russell Slade in the dugout and a young loanee by the name of Martin Woods was on the team sheet. If you do remember him, you are probably in the minority as he played three games for the us that season on loan from Doncaster Rovers.

Woods has gone on to have somewhat of a journeyman career however, playing in England and Scotland for the likes of Ross County, Dundee and Halifax Town.

Who’s been naughty then…

Neither side has any worries in terms of suspensions or players one yellow card away from suspension.

Defender Morgan Williams will be missing for Yeovil Town’s trip to newly-promoted Boston United this weekend, manager Mark Cooper has confirmed.

The boss said the centre half was suffering concussion after getting “a stray elbow off the ball” in the 1-0 defeat against Rochdale at Huish Park on Bank Holiday Monday, and expects him to miss this weekend and the trip to AFC Fylde the following Saturday.

He confirmed he expected left-back Alex Whittle, who missed both the Glovers’ matches over the Bank Holiday weekend, to travel to Lincolnshire this weekend, and it would appear Williams’ absence gives summer signing Finn Cousin-Dawson an opportunity.

On the former Bradford City player, Cooper said: “He has a tough combination to break in Williams and (Jake) Wannell, he coming in to a new area, it has not worked that smoothly for some of the boys who are getting used to how we do things. When he gets his opportunity, he has to take it, and that is the same with any player, it is about seizing the opportunity and making sure you are doing your job in a game situation.

Following the defeat on Monday, Cooper said he needed to “do a bit of work in the transfer market” and bring for more experience to his squad.

Asked about this on Thursday, he said: “We need players with a bit of know-how to get things done when we are on top. To make sure we can kill teams off or if we are defending a lead, making sure we don’t make a silly error to not defend our box properly, we have to get those details right.

On whether he expected any incomings imminently, the boss added: “I have nothing to say, we are always looking to improve the squad.”

Having gone down 3-1 away at Gateshead last Saturday, Yeovil were undone by a 91st-minute winner from Rochdale on home soil on Bank Holiday Monday. Meanwhile, this weekend’s opponents, Boston United, picked up the result of the weekend with a 2-0 win away at big-spending York City.

Cooper said he thought his side played well for the first hour of the game on Monday, without taking the opportunities to kill the game when they came.

He said: “There was only going to be one team that was going to win in the first half and that was us. Then in the last half-an-hour when we couldn’t score, they sensed a bit of blood and we committed a crazy (mistake which led to a) goal. It is frustrating, we need to be more ruthless and have that ruthless edge that we will need at this higher level. We are frustrated with the game and the result.

It is always important to get points and win games. I am not going to get too bogged down with results, it is about performances and our performances have not been bad, they have been good. But we have to find that ruthless edge when we get these opportunities to kill teams off.

On Boston, he said: “They had a great result at York, but we have to concentrate on the things that make us good. We are not going to throw everything out of the window because Boston beat York and we lost to Rochdale. It is alright showing your have fire in training, but you need to show it when the referee’s whistle goes and you get an opportunity to showcase your ability. It’s about executing whatever your job in the team is, we have seen loads of players who are really good in training, this is about nailing it when they are on the pitch.

Yeovil Town are back in National League action on Saturday with a trip to Boston United.

The referee for this game is Mr Neil Hair.

Helping Mr Hair to … comb… through the decisions will be his assistants Abbas Khan and Tim Walker.

Josh Crofts will be tasked with keeping Mark Cooper in his technical area.

As far we can tell, Mr Hair has only officiated two Yeovil games and they were both the early stages of the 2018/19 season.

A 3-1 loss away at Crawley and a 2-2 draw at Huish Park when Mansfield were in town.

On both occasions, he only booked one Yeovil Town player.

In order to find his Boston-related game history you have to receed even further, back to their stint in the National League North in the 2015/16 campaign.

He’s reffed five Boston games, they’ve won four.

Something I couldn’t brush past is that on two of those occasions he made the bald… sorry, bold, decision to award both the home and away teams penalty kicks.

If there’s a big decision to make om Saturday, I do hope he takes time to mullet over.

An agonising late goal from Connor McBride meant it was defeat for Yeovil against Rochdale on Bank Holiday Monday. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on…

We begin at the Darren Sarll derby, where Woking defeated Hartlepool United in dramatic circumstances. Sarll’s current employers were 2-0 up within 10 minutes, courtesy of Joe Grey, and it remained that way until the 68th minute where the comeback began via Matt Ward. Tunji Akinola got the second at the 80 minute mark, before Harry Beautyman wrapped things up with a 91st minute winner for the hosts.

There was another 3-2 thriller further north, as Tamworth registered their first win at National League level since 2014 by defeating Aldershot; there was also a first win for Maidenhead United, as they toppled Barnet with a 3-1 win courtesy of a Reece Smith double. Southend United and Dagenham & Redbridge played out a frenetic 2-2 draw in front of over 8,000 fans at Roots Hall. The Daggers thought they had all three points secured, before a 93rd minute equaliser from Gus Scott-Morriss rescued a point for the Shrimpers.

It took a 94th minute winner from Charlie McCann to bag all three points for Forest Green Rovers in a 2-1 win at home to Altrincham, while Boston United turned last week’s draw into a win this week, as they inflicted York City’s first defeat of the season with a 2-0 win. Eastleigh’s 100% start came to an end in a top-of-the-table clash between themselves and Sutton United, a 1-1 draw leaving the two sides 1st and 3rd after five games.

Gateshead continued their unbeaten start against Oldham Athletic, taking an early lead through Tyrelle Newton, before Manny Monthe equalised in the second half to split the points between the two sides. It was a day of firsts on Monday, as Wealdstone got their first win on the board with a 1-0 win over AFC Fylde, and Ebbsfleet United got their first point on the board with a 0-0 draw at Braintree Town. Finally, Solihull Moors took three points back down the M6 in a 1-0 win at FC Halifax Town.

Jordan Young has said he feels his attacking colleagues are equally to blame for Yeovil’s loss against Rochdale on Saturday.

Yeovil had the bulk of the chances within the first hour of the game before Rochdale scored a late winner in a 0-1 defeat for the Glovers.

Speaking to BBC’s Mark Stillman post-match, Young suggested the defence weren’t entirely at fault for the result, adding that he felt Yeovil performed well in the first hour.

I thought the first half was really good, controlled the game out of possession and in possession, I thought we had a couple of good chances we probably should have took, but other than that they didn’t really do much”.

It’s that time in the game where they’re on top that we’ve got to see it out better, the goal was obviously not good, but it’s some of the attacker’s fault as well, we’ve got to score when the chances come, we can’t keep blaming other people and we’ve just got to stick together”.

The wide-man felt he may have been hard done by with the decision on his long distance header, cheekily suggesting it may well have crossed the line.

I never normally head the ball, but I’ve just got a contact, I didn’t even try and score really, it’s just hit my head, but I thought it was in, I obviously couldn’t see it, the linesman was a bit far away but I thought it was in“.

When asked about the step up in quality following promotion to the National League, he said it’s a noticeable difference.

I think teams are more ruthless in this league and more difficult to break down, but you’ve seen today that when we have the ball we look really good”.

Teams are saying to us how good we are, but we’re not winning the game, so you can be as good as you want at a level but if you don’t get results, it’s no good”.

Young also spoke to Ian, and shared his frustration on a good first hour with nothing to show for it.

Yeah it’s really frustrating, I think the way we played up to however many minutes was really good, but especially when we’re attacking that end, we’ve got to be ruthless, we’ve got to get shots off, make the keeper work as much as we can and keep the ball in that area of the pitch and eventually we’ll get a goal, even if it’s in the 80th minute”.

It’s frustrating because sometimes we don’t really know what happens in a game when it changes, but when it does change we need to ride the storm a little bit and stay in the game”.
