Yeovil Town are back in action at Huish Park this weekend as they host a struggling Havant & Waterloville.

The Glovers will be thankful for some home comforts after two weekends in row in the county of Kent (try saying that drunk). The Somerset side come into the game after beating a hardy Tonbridge Angel side 2-4. The boys in green will also be looking to avenge a shock defeat by Havant in the reverse fixture at the start of the season.

The Hawks make the trip to south Somerset after having last weekend off due to a game postponement. Havant did win their previous game however 2-1 against Chelmsford City. That win gave the Hampshire outfit their first three points in three games which will have come as some relief for Caretaker manager Cliff de Gordon.

Boss Mark Cooper was happy with his sides showing last time out. He said: “We spoke about the need to react. if we lose a game it’s important that we fight back and we did that…there was never any doubt in my mind we wouldn’t fight back.”

The ex-Swindon man had some kind words about Saturdays opponents. He said: “They have their strengths…they’ve got some good players, with the players they’ve gone through this season they shouldn’t be where they are in the league.”

Cooper confirmed that Jordan Stevens “is available for Saturday” after getting a slight knock against Tonbridge. The 54 year-old was disappointed that forward Olly Thomas is out for “three weeks” after getting injured whilst playing for parent club Bristol City. However, he did state “he’s there player at the end of the day” to not upset the apple cart.

Jordan Young is a man on a personal mission this season, having set himself a goal target. He said: “At the start of the season I wasn’t looking at goal targets due to my game time. But  now I’m getting the playing time, I want 20 [goals] I think I’m on 14 now.”

Young is still one Yellow card away from suspension.

The Hawks have to ex-glovers in their squad that many Yeovil fans will recognise. Midfielder Oscar Gobern, who spent a season at Huish Park now finds himself on the south-coast where he’s been for the last two seasons. A name more familiar for fans will be that of ex-striker Ryan Seager. Seager, who was born and raised in the town, is also now plying his trade in Hampshire after a move from national league side Dorking Wanderers mid-season.

The last time these two teams played, Yeovil were beaten 4-3 in what was a fairly entertaining game, the match also saw Charlie Cooper sent off in added time. Glovers fans will be glad to hear Muhammadu Faal has since left the Hampshire side who netted twice in the reverse fixture. Callum Kealy, who scored the winner that game, however has returned to the club after a brief spell away at Eastbourne Borough.

A player to keep an eye on for home fans is James Roberts, with the forward proving to be one of the Hawks most prolific attackers scoring six goals so far this season.

It’s Friday, that means Ian, Dave and Ben are back to preview Yeovil Town vs Havant, and everything else YTFC.

Yeovil Town front man Jordan Young has been speaking to the press ahead of the Glovers game against Havant and Waterlooville and has admitted that the 4-3 loss in the reverse fixture is something of a motivation for the team.

“They’re obviously a difficult team, they beat us earlier in the season, so we’ve got that in the back of our minds, we’ve just got to stick to what we do and I think that’s what the gaffer said today and if we just keep doing what we’re doing we’ll get the three points on Saturday.

I feel like every team we play against want to bring their best and especially them if they’re struggling a little bit, they’re going to fight for everything, they’ve got attributes that could hurt us, so we’ve got to be careful.”

Jordan Young chases down a Havant player

Young is having a productive season in front of goal, already into double figures, he says that whilst he didn’t set a target for himself at the start… the idea of getting to 20 does sound nice.

“Its been a good season for everybody and I’m glad I’m doing well for myself, it’s shows with where we are in the table, I’m pleased overall.

I haven’t (set any targets) this season, because at the start, I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted, so it wasn’t something that I was thinking about, but when you get playing regularly, it is something you think about, how many I can get, it’s more just enjoying myself and playing freely, that’s when I’m at my best”

“The main thing is that we win the league, but I want to hit 20 if I can.”

Coming back to Huish Park this weekend gives Yeovil the chance to play back-to-back games in front of their fans for the first time in a while, something which Young thinks can really spur the side on in the final push for promotion;

“It’s massive, even last year when I signed in January, it wasn’t the best season last year, but the fans were never the problem, I thought they were good in the end, especially when you get relegated, you want to kick on and that’s what we did this year, the fans have been there from the start, from the first game of the season, the attendance has been crazy, it is obviously massive, it helps, it helps all of us gel together.

We’ve got a really good bunch of boys here and we’re doing really well.”

Finally, Jordan Young spoke to Three Valley’s Radio’s Tom Bailey about the possibility of missing two game through suspension, sitting on nine yellow cards, if he were to get one more before the Welling game in mid March, he’d have to sit out two games.

“It was on my mind, when I got the ninth one, the gaffer spoke to me and said be careful of your tackles and stuff, so I haven’t been going to ground recently, I don’t even know how I’m on nine to be honest with you, it’s crazy.
It’s difficult when you play for that to be on your mind, but it is something that I’ve tried to stay away from.”

Be nice to the ref on Saturday please, Jordan!

Yeovil Town Women have officially won the Somerset Division One league title after results went their way at the weekend. Following second-placed Banwell’s 5-2 loss at the hands of Nailsea United, they now sit eight points adrift of the Glovers with only two games left to play, therefore mathematically handing top spot to Yeovil.

Paul Knight’s side came into the campaign with the league title being the main objective, and they have gone about achieving this target in emphatic fashion. Numerous high-scoring results have made the league title seem like an inevitability over the course of the season. With four matches still to play, Yeovil have earned a perfect 42 points from their 14 league matches, blowing the rest of the league away. The Glovers clinched the title with a goal-difference 36 greater than the next best team, scoring 74 goals and conceding just 5. In their fourteen league matches they have a staggering average of 5.3 goals per game, which includes one home walkover against Sydenham Rangers.

Away trips to Wellington, Banwell and Portishead conclude the season, before the final home match as Yeovil host Paulton Rovers Reserves on the 24th March. Paul Knight’s team will be undoubtedly eager to maintain their 100% record and finish the league campaign convincingly.

As well as the success of the women’s first team, the development team also secured the Somerset Division Two South Title after overcoming Wellington by three goals to nil. Ray Bloomfield’s team lost just once in the eighteen-match league campaign and finished the season with 49 points from a possible 54.

Yeovil Town Women now turn their attention to the Somerset Premier Cup, as they face Middlezoy away on 18th February 14:00 KO. With this fixture being a semi-final, the Glovers will have their eyes on a league and cup double.

Everyone at Gloverscast would like to congratulate both Yeovil Town Women’s teams for their success in their returning season.

What’s better than having one defensive giant in the Team of the Week?

That’s right, two!

Two-goal hero Jake Wannell obviously makes the cut, but so does Joe Day following Yeovil’s 4-2 away win at Tonbridge Angels

The on loan man from Newport pulled off a sensational stop at 3-2 which secured the Glovers the win… “as good as goal” they say.

Great work from both of the Glovers duo, here’s to a few more!

Well, there were goals galore in the National League South today, despite a reduced schedule thanks to the FA Trophy 5th Round, as well as Mother Nature herself. Let’s take a look at how everyone else got on as Yeovil won away at Tonbridge Angels in a 4-2 cracker!

We’ve become accustomed to this in these roundups now – we begin at Worthing, who hit six at home to bottom side Dover Athletic, Ollie Pearce bagging four of them himself. The visitors did their best, scoring four of their own as Worthing had to replace their goalkeeper in the first half following a serious injury to Josh Jeffries (who is in hospital and recovering). There were another six goals for a home side, as St Albans City stuffed Taunton in a 6-0 drubbing, Shaun Jeffers scoring a hat-trick in the process.

There was late drama at Plainmoor as Torquay United surrendered a lead three times to Slough Town, a 91st minute winner from Leon Chambers-Parillon handing the Rebels the three points and leaving the hosts with one win in ten games. Last weekend’s hosts Maidstone were held to a 1-1 draw by Hemel Hempstead, courtesy of a 96th minute equaliser by George Williams; meanwhile Chippenham Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Braintree Town.

There were two more games in the National League South, and both finished in 1-0 scorelines. Bath City registered their first win against Dartford since 2019, thanks to an early Cody Cooke goal, while Chelmsford City ended W*ymouth’s four game win-streak with their home win. There were two games cancelled due to the weather, with Truro City’s first game at Taunton’s ground, infamous for its drainage (or lack thereof) being called off against Eastbourne Borough, while Weston-super-mare had their home game against Farnborough called off too.

There were three teams from the National League South in FA Trophy action on Saturday as well, and all three faced elimination from the tournament. Bromley ended Aveley’s run with a 2-0 home win, while Welling United took a 3-0 defeat at home to Barnet. Hampton & Richmond were the subject of an upset, as they were defeated by step 3 side Macclesfield at home.

National League South results – in full

Bath City 1-0 Dartford
Chelmsford City 1-0 W*ymouth
Chippenham Town 0-1 Braintree Town
Maidstone United 1-1 Hemel Hempstead Town
St Albans City 6-0 Taunton Town
Torquay United 3-4 Slough Town
Worthing 6-4 Dover Athletic

Bromley 2-0 Aveley
Hampton & Richmond Borough 0-2 Macclesfield
Welling United 0-3 Barnet

National League South table

Three more points for the Glovers in the National League South, here’s how the loanees got on out and about.

Firstly, Barnet had an FA Trophy tie, which meant Jordan Maguire-Drew had to sit out, he’s cup tied.

Into the NLS, Malachi Linton played the full 90 for W*ymouth, they lost 1-0 to play off chasing Chelmsford.

Dorchester were 3-0 down inside half an hour against Gosport Borough, Ollie Haste started the game, but was sacrificed on 68 minutes as the Magpies gambled to get players forward.

Melksham “did enough to win the game” according to their manager after falling short in their fixture against Tavistock. Benjani Jr was dropped to the bench but was introduced just before the hour mark, but it wasn’t to be.

Gillingham, Welton Rovers and Sherborne were all postponed which just leaves us with the headline on Charlie Bateson.

He scored both goals for Shepton in their 2-2 draw with Wellington AFC, his goals actually had the Mallet two goals in front, before a late rally from the home side.

The match ended on a sad note though, in the very final minutes of added on time in the second half, the Shepton goalkeeper Tom Roberts was taken off with a nasty looking injury, the game actually ended early, final confirmation that the result stands lies at the feet of the League, but we join both sides in with the ‘keeper well for his recovery.

With 15 games to go, the gap between Yeovil Town and the rest of National League South remains at ten points after a 4-2 win at Tonbridge Angels yesterday.

Dave was in the away end at the Longmead Stadium and here’s his conclusions on wjhat he saw….

Worried? Not for a second: Okay, I will not deny there were a few hairy moments in our defence after Tonbridge scored their two goals. We gave them some hope and they took, but scoring four goals away from home against a side sat in mid-table, let’s not underestimate that. Yes, our defending left a bit to be desired, but Worthing scored six and yet conceded four against a Dover side at the bottom of the league and they are the darlings of the division. Let’s just keeping on winning, boys.

Jake Wannell was Skiverton-esque with his goals. You heard me right!

Goals from all over: With 17 goals out injured in Rhys Murphy and Jake Hyde up front, goals will have to come from other places between now and the end of the season. So seeing Jake Wannell scoring two headers straight out of the Terry Skiverton’s playbook (yes, I went there), Dylan Morgan showing his creative quality and Young and Worthy chipping in is vital.  By my (questionable) maths, Jordan Young now has as 13 goals in all competitions – the same as Murphy.

Great to see you back Jordan: Having looked wrapped up for his previous substitute appearances, seeing Jordan Stevens’ shin pads as he took his place on the bench gave me confidence he’d see some action yesterday. As soon as the third goal went in, the outstanding Dylan Morgan was withdrawn and Stevens introduced. He showed a few turns of pace, got us worried by needing some treatment after falling heavily on his shoulder, but above gave me confidence he can still play an important part in this season.

Jordan Stevens replaced Dylan Morgan after 67 minutes.

No segregation. No problem: There’s about 15 miles between Maidstone and Tonbridge, but the difference between the way the two clubs treat away supporters could not be more different. There was no segregation at Tonbridge, unlike the set up of putting home and away fans head-to-head at Maidstone, stewarding was sensible and, funny thing, no issues. Just like there were no issues at St Albans two weeks prior where there was (again) no segregation, or the rest of the season, for that matter. Now I’m not making excuses for idiots in our fanbase at Maidstone, but to read them issue a statement – read it here – effectively saying the issue was solely with away fans is beyond delusional. No doubt the innocent little flowers who chucked bottles and coins from the Maidstone end enjoyed their Sunday morning choir practice today.

I’m beginning to believe: I’ve been trying so hard to stick to the Mark Cooper philosophy of not getting carried away, not looking at league tables, games in hand, other teams’ fixtures, and I am just about holding it together. But, this performance showed me the spirit which has got me starting to believe. Two home fixtures are to come and good results there from a tricky trip to Chelmsford and I’ll be fully converted. Champions elect ole, ole, oleeeeee!

Two goals for defender Jake Wannell, and brace of assists for Dylan Morgan and  some important saves from keeper Joe Day all led to a 4-2 win at Tonbridge Angels today.

But who impressed you the most in green-and-white this afternoon?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
