Goalscorer Matt Worthington is aiming to continue his rich vein of scoring form after netting his third in five games to seal a 2-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge at the weekend.

The Yeovil Town midfielder found the net just once last season and drew a blank in the 2020-21 campaign but has been playing in a more advanced position since the arrival of Mark Cooper as manager.

It was his forward run which won the penalty after half-an-hour which was put away by Jordan Maguire-Drew to give the Glovers the lead in Essex.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins after the match, Worthington said: “(Scoring goals) is something that I wanted to add to my game, especially this season.

I need to get more goals, especially in the position I’m playing – an advanced role in midfield- the gaffer has given me licence to get forward and long may it continue.”

Worthington was part of a three-man midfield alongside Charlie Cooper and loanee Jack Clarke who were handed their first starts and impressed in the first half, linking up well with the front three of Jordan YoungAndrew Oluwabori and Maguire-Drew.

He added: “I think they’re (the new additions) brilliant, with Coops at the bottom of the three, we were solid in the first half, we felt more secure, it allowed me and Clarkey to push forward. It was a good performance.

Second half, they were definitely throwing bodies forward and it was just nice to get that second goal and secure the 3 points.

Paul McCallum (who came on for Dagenham at the start of the second half) is a good player, he’s effective, when we came out I said to the lads that they’d be looking to hit him, he’s effective, he gets the flicks on so we need to track the runners.

I think the defence were brilliant, they dealt with all the threats all game. Morgs was brilliant, Bevs, Staunts and Recks were brilliant all game.

The win keeps Yeovil five points off the National League’s relegation places, and nine points adrift of Dagenham who still occupy the final play-off place – and the win must have lifted Worthy who used ‘the p word’ quite explicitly.

He said: “I didn’t realise we had not won away this season until a couple of weeks ago and obviously it’s something we have to change, we have to win away if we want to get up to the play-off spots.

That pressure now is off us that we’ve won our away game and hopefully we can take it into the next couple of games.

The Football Association has confirmed the a two-match ban for Glovers’ defender Jamie Reckord.

Reckord picked up his 10th yellow card of the season in the 79th minute of Yeovil’s 2-0 win against Dagenham on Saturday.

Reckord will miss back to back home games against Wealdstone and Maidstone.

Match Report

Yeovil Town picked up their first away win of the season at Dagenham & Redbridge.

A first half penalty from Jordan Maguire-Drew which saw Daggers’ defender Harry Phipps sent off gave them the advantage before Matt Worthington added a second with a stunning second half goal.

Here’s how Dave saw it from the away end….

First half

With the home side having had the better of the opening exchanges, the first opportunity fell to Jordan Maguire-Drew after nine minutes. A combination of Young and Matt Worthington got the ball to through to the play-maker but his shot could not beat Elliot Justham – or the assistant’s flag.

Moments later, a clash of heads between Morgan Williams and full-back Sam Ling saw the Dagenham defender replaced by Elliot Johnson, who was sent off in the corresponding fixture last season.

Good harrying (is that a word?) by Jordan Young saw a ball get through to Oluwabori whose shot was turned aside by Justham after 20 minutes. The combinations between the front players was clearly coming together, but the opening 25 minutes showed there was enough there to to test a side in the National League play-off places.

The opening goal came from another good press which sent Worthington through and he was clipped by Matt Phipps (just) inside the box and referee Alan Dale pointed to the spot. Phipps saw red and Jordan MAGUIRE-DREW claimed the ball immediately and put it straight down the middle.

With a man advantage, the visitors pressed for a second but a long range efforts from Charlie Cooper and Oluwabori were easily dealt with by Justham.

At the other end, the assistant did not blow up for what looked like a foul on Josh Staunton with five minutes of the first half remaining, and the ball broke to Josh Walker who combined well with Junior Morais. The latter’s effort did nothing to test Grant Smith.

Half time:  Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Yeovil Town 1

Second half

Three minutes after the restart, a beautiful ball through from Maguire-Drew found Oluwabori on the left of the box, but he dragged his effort wide. A little more composure from the loanee and that could have given the visitors a valuable second goal.

On 55 minutes, a worryingly length treatment to Grant Smith‘s left hand led to a break in play. The keeper was able to continue albeit in discomfort.

Grant Smith receives lengthy treatment to his left hand after 55 minutes.

Dagenham introduced Paul McCallum in to the forward line at the half-time break, and the imposing striker caused issues in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. On 57 minutes, he got on the end of a Josh Hare cross but his effort was blocked.

The chances Yeovil were creating in the first half seemed to dry up, and on 67 minutes Alex Fisher replaced the hard-working Young. Lawson D’Ath and new signing Edwin Agbaje replaced Cooper and Clarke on 76 minutes, presumably to add a little more solidity at the back and composure in the middle of the park.

That saw the visitors go with five at the back with Williams pushed in while Agbaje slotted in at right back.

Ironically the switch a more defensive line-up came just moments before Yeovil got there second goal in style. Oluwabori’s ball from the left found Matt WORTHINGTON whose effort from 25 yards rocketed in to the net. It was against the run of play, but exactly what was needed.

Smith had to be on guard with two minutes remaining to turn a stinging effort from Morias.

Alex Fisher had a great opportunity to make it three deep in to second half stoppage time, but two goals and a clean sheet with suffice.

Full time: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Yeovil Town 2

Jack Clarke, Charlie Cooper and Jordan Young all make the starting line-up for Yeovil Town’s visit to Dagenham & Redbridge (3pm kick-off) today.

The recent arrivals are named along with on loan Peterborough United man Andrew Oluwabori in an attacking looking starting  XI.

There is no place for striker Malachi Linton or defender Max Hunt, but AFC Bournemouth loanee Owen Bevan having missed the last outing – a 4-1 defeat at Bromley earlier this month  through injury.

Substitutes: Ben Richards-Everton, Edwin Agbaje, Lawson D’Ath, Charlie Wakefield, Alex Fisher.

Yeovil Town’s age group teams are in Junior Premier League action this weekend.

The Under-12s through until Under-16s teams, which play as part of the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust, are all in action.

The Under-12s take on their counterparts from Paulton Rovers, with the other four teams take on Mid-Somerset Regional Talent Centre. There is no match for the Under-11s team.

The Under-18s do not have a South West Counties Youth League fixture, but have arranged a friendly against the Sixth Form side of Sherborne School.

In the league, Bridgwater United Under-18s play their game in hand over the table-topping Glovers as they travel to sixth-placed Mangotsfield United.

Yeovil Town brought in Republic of Ireland Under-19s international defender Edwin Agbaje on loan from Ipswich Town  until the end of the season.

The 18-year-old, who plays on the eight side of midfield in the Portman Road youth set-up, bolsters the Glovers defensive ranks ahead of the weekend’s game at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Speaking to the Glovers’ YouTube channel, he said: “When I heard about the move, straight away I was open to it.

Yeovil is a big club in this league, with a good history of playing in the top leagues.

I wanted to come over straight away and get that experience of men’s football, at the right club, at the right time for me.

Yeovil manager Mark Cooper told ytfc.net: “Edwin is a young lad who arrives with a lot of potential.

He’s impressed so far in training, he’s got a clear determination to do well in the game and that will bode well in his time here.

Agbaje was a key part of the Ipswich side which made it to the FA Youth Cup semi-final in 2020-21, and captained the club’s Under-23s in the Papa John’s Trophy tie with Cambridge United in October. They lost that match to a goal from another ex-Glovers’ loanee, Lewis Simper, having played with ten men from the 17th minute.

He also came off the substitutes’ bench for the final two minutes of a 3-0 FA Cup with for his parent club over Bracknell Town in November.

Welcome to Huish Park, Edwin!

Yeovil Town have confirmed their rearranged match with Wealdstone will take place a week later on Tuesday 31st January after tonight’s fixture was postponed due to a frozen pitch at Huish Park.

Having confirmed the game was off following 1pm pitch inspection on Tuesday, the club swiftly confirmed a rearranged date with a 7.45pm kick-off.

In a statement about the postponement, the club said: “The pitch was once again covered overnight and whilst 80% of the pitch is playable, the penalty area at the Thatchers Gold End is frozen. Despite being double covered, it is unlikely to thaw any further in time for this evening’s game.

The postponement means the Glovers’ next game – subject to warmer weather in Essex, of course – is at Dagenham & Redbridge this Saturday, 3pm kick-off.

Altrincham chairman Bill Waterson has said the effectiveness of the Huish Park frost covers had taken Yeovil Town “by surprise” last weekend.

The National League fixture on Saturday was postponed by referee Sam Mulhall following a 1pm pitch with the Glovers describing the decision as “outrageous” and vowed to make a formal complaint.

Waterson told RadioAlty.co.uk he was in the car park at Yeovil Pen Mill train station when he learned the news of the postponement.

He said: “There was a National League meeting last week which I attended along with the Yeovil chief executive (Martyn Starnes) and some of the board members and I had a conversation with him on Thursday and they were very confident the game would go ahead.

They have good frost covers at Yeovil and they put those down on Friday night, I think what happened is when they took the covers up they discovered there were parts of the pitch that were quite wet which they were not expecting. It was almost that the frost covers had been too efficient.

It took them by surprise. There has been a lot of noise about whether the pitch was playable or not, particularly from Yeovil who apparently trained on the pitch that day, but you have to abide by the referee’s decision. He is the overall arbiter on this one, that’s life at this level.

The club has confirmed a 1pm pitch inspection will take place on Tuesday ahead of tonight’s match with Wealdstone (7.45pm kick-off) following discussions with local referees.
