Speaking exclusively to The Gloverscastafter the final whistle, Glovers’ midfielder Hayden Muller reflected on a breathless 4-3 thriller against Chesterfield that saw Yeovil push their League Two opponents all the way before ultimately crashing out of the competition.
“Yeah, especially when you look at the last sort of 20 minutes of the game, I felt like we had a lot of belief as soon as we got the second goal that we were back in it,” Muller told The Gloverscast. “The game could have gone either way.”

“When we got it to 3-3, I thought if anyone’s going to go and win it, I thought it could be us. Obviously, it wasn’t to be. We concede the probably, a fairly sloppy goal, to make it go 4-3. But no, we’re proud of the boys, to be fair. Against a team in the league above, like you said, I thought we’d done well.

“We’d done the analysis of them, throughout the week. We can see they had really good rotations. They were really patient with the ball. A bit like Boreham Wood, similar style. Really patient with the ball. They move you about, they like to create gaps. But we just thought like if we had a good, compact shape, pressed at the right moments, stayed narrow, made it hard to play through that, we’d always give ourselves a chance. And like you saw in the last 20 minutes, that’s exactly what we did. We gave ourselves a chance, and, we were unlucky in the end not to at least take it to extra time.”

The climax arrived in the dying moments when Yeovil clawed their way back to 3-3 through Hayden Muller’s back post header. Charlie Lennon delivered a pinpoint corner to the near post, and Muller escaped his marker to bundle the ball home, sending 514 travelling and home supporters into absolute raptures.
“[An] unbelievable feeling, to be honest. Probably the best I’ve had so far in football. We practice that a lot. We done it yesterday a lot. Set pieces is what we thought was an area we could get them. So when I saw Charlie’s delivery go to the near post, I actually lost my man around the back. So, luckily Ste [Walker] got the first contact, and then I had to just keep my eyes open and make sure it went in the back of the net”
Muller was full of praise for the fans who backed the team, noting that the late equaliser and the subsequent push for a winner were as much for them as for the players.
“I’m happy that we could give them that moment,” Muller said of the 514 fans in attendance. “Obviously, it’s a long way for them to travel, coming to a great arena like this. I’m happy that we could make it a fairly even game and give them something to cheer about. It’s annoying that we didn’t take it to extra time, but I hope the 500-odd of them that come, I hope we made them proud, we need to just carry on and get better, to bring this sort of form into our home game next week”
