Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 425)

Carl Dickinson has spoken of the bond he feels with Yeovil Town supporters as he prepares for his final game for the club this weekend.

The 34-year-old’s appearance against $tockport County at Huish Park on Saturday will also be his last as a professional footballer as he prepares to take over as player-manager for lower league, Hanley Town, from next season.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the left-back said: “I have a good bond with the fans here (at Yeovil), they realise what happened in my first year was out of my hands and I think they know deep down that I care.
“I care every day I walk through the door, I care every minute in training and I care every minute in games and I hope that comes out in my performances.
“I have not got it everything right every time, but I have tried to give it everything I have got.”

The big news for $tockport County as they arrive at Yeovil Town for the final match of the Glovers’ season is the absence through injury striker Paddy Madden.

The Irishman, who will forever be a legend among Yeovil supporters for his 24 goals in our League One promotion season in 2013, is missing with an ankle injury.

He has not played since scoring and then going off at half-time with the knock in the 1-1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge on May 11.

But, for $tockport the mission will be three points to ensure their place in the National League’s top three, meaning they only have to play two games to potentially regain their place in the Football League.

Hartlepool United, who host W*ymouth at the weekend, will be hoping Yeovil can do them a favour by taking points off our visitors to give them a chance to nick third place.

Given their record, particularly away from Edgeley Park where they have not lost in their past six trips, our big-spending visitors will be coming to South Somerset in confident mood.

FROM THE MANAGER

Speaking ahead of the visit to Huish Park, $tockport County manager Simon Rusk admitted that playing in front of opposition fans for the first time this season would present a different challenge to this team.

He said: “It has been a long time since we have had a hostile environment in an away stadium, so we have to be aware of that, but we have an experienced set of players and I think we will deal with that naturally.

“All games represent a difficult task in different ways, and it is probably indicative of the league table where we have have Yeovil who have challenged in previous years but this season has not really panned out.

“But, they are well-organised with a good manager and a strong set of players, so it is another game where you have to be at a high level of performance to get that three points.”

TEAM NEWS

The big news is the absence of Paddy Madden who is expected to miss his chance to return from injury at Huish Park this weekend.

However, $tockport boss Simon Rusk is hoping to have forward Harry Cardwell, who is on loan from National League North side Chorley, back from injury to partner Alex Reid up front in the absence of Madden.

Asked about making decisions on players fitness with crucial play-off games coming up, Rusk said: “In terms of the decisions around players you could expose to injury, we are at a time of year where the consequences are a little more terminal.

“If you lose someone for two or three weeks you are losing them for really important games, so it is in my thinking.

“But, we are a strong team and if players are missing out, we have confidence in those who are coming in.”

As well as Madden, the visitors will be without long term injury victim, left back Mark Kitching, who has been out of the squad since February.

Yeovil Town’s final game against Stockport on Saturday was already a landmark moment with the final games of Carl Dickinson and Jimmy Smith’s career, but now, midfielder Charlie Lee has also announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the current campaign.

Taking to Twitter, Lee simply stated;

Lee joined the club at the start of the Darren Sarll era and has been one of the stand out stars for the past couple of seasons.

The Stockport game will be his 69th in the green and white, Lee has score five goals.

It goes without saying, but Lee, much like Dicko and Smith leaves with nothing but our best wishes for the future.

Much like with Dickinson and Smith, supporters and teammates alike have taken to social media to sing the praises of Charlie;

Max Hunt Praises Jimmy Smith on Instagram
Josh Neufville on Jimmy Smith

Not one, but two Yeovil town stars hang up their boots following the conclusion of the 2020/21 season, the final game against Stockport will be the final professional game for both Jimmy Smith and Carl Dickinson.

We’ve waxed lyrical about both on Gloverscast.co.uk and on our Podcast (Search ‘Gloverscast’ wherever you get your audio on demand), but it’s their teammates who have taken to social media to praise the duo who depart for coching roles next season.

Carl Dickinson will be Player/Manager at Hanley Town whilst Jimmy Smith is heading into the coaching set up at Chelsea.

We’ve complied some of the comments Glovers stars past and present have made on Twitter and Instagram

that show, just how much, they will both be missed.

Go well, gents – thanks for all you’ve done at Yeovil.

Former Yeovil Town winger Josh Neufville has been offered a new contract by Luton Town boss (and former Glover…) Nathan Jones.

Neufville is recovering after surgery following a broken ankle in his final appearance for the Glovers but has been offered new terms to remain at Kenilworth Road.

Also announced was that the Hatters will trigger an option on Gabriel Osho who has spent time on loan at both Yeovil and Rochdale, finally, we rewind the clock to the 2006/07 season to remember Martin Cranie.

A versatile defender who was actually born in Yeovil joined the Glovers on loan from Southampton – he too has been offered a new deal by Nathan Jones.

Congratulations to the trio of former Glovers on getting their offers.

Two former Glovers stars on the hunt for new clubs after being released at the end of their current contracts.

Lee Peltier and Jon Obika of West Brom and St Mirren respectively have been told that their current deals will not be renewed.

Peltier, a versatile defender initially joined on loan from Liverpool in 2007 before spending 18 months as a permanent member of the squad.

He would go on and spend time at Leeds, Huddersfield and Cardiff including a spell in the Premier League with the Bluebirds.

As for Obika, he was part of a cohort of players signed from Tottenham alongside Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason and Steven Caulker over the spell of two seasons.

Obika spent four spells with the Glovers scoring 17 league goals in the  green and white.

We wish them both the very best in the hunt for a new club.

We may have missed this earlier in the month, but Ryan Burke, who spent the first half of the season at Huish Park has been released by Birmingham City.

We reported at the time that Remeo Hutton was on their 13 man list of players who will be on the hunt for a new club, but completely overlooked the fact that Burke was also on that list.

Burke played only a handful of times at the start of the current campaign either at left back or in a defensive midfield role.

All the best to Ryan as he heads on his next adventure.

Josh Neufville went under the knife on Thursday

Yeovil Town’s loan winger Josh Neufville has surgery on a broken ankle today, sending a snap from his hospital bed to his instagram account.

Manager Darren Sarll gave an update on the Luton Town man’s injury,

“Josh is in surgery today (Thursday), he has a tough road back. It is probably the worst injury a footballer can get in terms of time off.”

Sarll confirmed that he has suggested that Yeovil Town might be a place where Josh can continue his rehab and regain match fitness.

“We have told him if it’s possible that his first game back when he’s fit can be at Yeovil, we will welcome him with open arms… the impact he had from Day One was incredible.”

“I like those loan players who take the football club to their heart. Remeao Hutton had that, Michael Kelly has that.
When you loan a player you are basically renting them, but Josh has never been like that and I would love him to play for Yeovil again. We have helped his career enormously and he has helped us to come out of a bad start and get a few wins.”

Josh’s Mum, who has taken time to thank Yeovil fans for their support this past week, confirmed that Josh’s surgery had been a complete success.

We of course, wish Josh all the best in his recovery.

This Saturday’s game against Stockport will be the final one in green and white for Carl Dickinson and Manager Darren Sarll took time to praise his left back who has been a real leader for the club since his arrival.

“It is going to be impossible to replace Carl Dickinson. Everyone tells me what he can’t do, but he has played so many games and hardly ever gets roasted, maybe one in five someone gives him a bit of a lesson in athleticism. A brilliant character.”

Dicko has accepted a Player/Manager role at Hanley Town closer to his base in Stoke.

“He is magnificent and someone I will never fall out of touch with. He is a brilliant guy and a top player and the way he and Lee (Collins) led my first two years in the changing room has been incredible. We have had many a conversation on his new job, how difficult it is going to be and how old he is going to look in the next six months!”

“We will always stay in touch, we have a very close relationship because he has to embody the manager. I thank him from the bottom of my heart. He is a born winner and he will want to go out with a win (against Stockport County this weekend).”

The former Port Vale legend joined the Glovers in League Two but spent time training with his former club after being exiled from the set up at Huish Park under former Manager Darren Way.

“The only blip on his Yeovil career is the time he wasn’t allowed to help keep us up and that is something that is a real shame and obviously still grates with him. He was willing to come back and give his all in a league lower which was wonderful and just typifies the man.”

Carl Dickinson leaves very big boots to fill and whoever does done the number 3 shirt next season – and the Captain’s armband – has a very tough act to follow.

Thanks for everything, Carl, from everyone here at the Gloverscast and every, single Yeovil Town fan.
