Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 30)

Andrew Oluwabori has been named in the National League team of the midweek after his match defining performance against Sutton on Tuesday.

His opening goal gave the Glovers a first half advantage and the first step towards a third straight win.

Yeovil Town’s Interim Manager Richard Dryden has been nominated for the league’s September Manager of the Month award.

The official website says the following:

Richard Dryden (Yeovil Town)

Penny for the thoughts of Yeovil Town fans last month after Danny Webb was appointed, and resigned after just a few days. But Richard Dryden provided the calm amid the chaos. He won his game as a caretaker before Webb’s arrival and was handed the job full-time the moment he left.Three brilliant wins suggest things happen for a reason.

W 1-0 Woking
W 4-1 Aldershot Town
W 1-0 Altrincham
W 2-1 Sutton United

It’s worth noting that he was also in charge for the 1-0 away win at Solihull Moors also and that performance deserves a nod of appreciation.

Dryden has been nominated along side Robert Savage (FGR) Luke Garrard (Boreham Wood) and Jimmy McNulty (Rochdale).

It is our opinion that the National League should take into consideration the context that has surrounded the club and award the final trophy to Richard Dryden.

Great stuff, Richard!

Ref, Referee, Match Official

The Glovers are back at Huish Park this Saturday with Boreham Wood the visitors to Somerset.

Our referee for this game is Mr Niall Smith, who we have seen before, but only a couple of times. Back in May he took charge of the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat away at Aldershot, taking the name of Harry Kite on that occasion.

Roll back to the National League South title winning season and he also oversaw the 1-0 victory over Taunton, a single Frank Nouble goal the difference with Jordan Young, Jake Wannell and Michael Smith all going in the book.

This season, he’s taken charge of three games at this level, yet to brandish a red card, but the yellow one has made an appearance or 15 – but that did include a rather spicy game between Altrincham and Aldershot which had eight.

Marcus Carmichael and Thomas Holden have flag duties as assistant, Said Ouchene is marshalling the dug outs.

Two Three wins on the bounce for Yeovil Town. Tom was there for Green and White Radio on Tuesday, here’s what he saw from behind the mic.

Andrew Oluwabori. Wow. Wow wow wow. What a player we’ve got on our hands, even if he isn’t actually ours. The birthday boy ran riot on Tuesday, dancing past players like they were nothing. He reminds me of that kid at school who was so obviously better than everyone else cos he played outside of school too… he’s just mint! If I’m being super critical, his end product still needs a bit of work, but at just 23, there’s still a lot of time for that to develop. Late birthday wishes to you Andrew, and topping it off with a tidy finish was the best way to celebrate!

It’s early days, but we may have been wrong about Dryden. It’s three wins on the spin for the former assistant-come-interim-come-assistant-come-interim coach now, and I’ll be honest, I scoffed when I heard the words “attacking style of football” on the webpage of the statement following Danny Webb’s departure and Dryden’s subsequent appointment. I’m eating my words now, he has managed to turn the ship around very quickly, and employ a brand of football that Yeovil fans will actually want to come and watch! Of course we’re still early into this experiment, but I’m beginning to believe again!

We need to talk about Finn Cousin-DawsonI want to start this point by stressing that Finn is a fantastic player, I’ve really enjoyed watching him settle into his spell here, and leading the backline last season through an injury crisis was admirable at such a young age. That being said… the “can FCD play in midfield” experiment has run its course for me. I lost count of the amount of times he was caught flat footed and out of position, and he just doesn’t have the awareness to play in that position for me, following a clumsy performance in which he worked his way into the referee’s book. Swap him and Wannell if you’re going to experiment again, but Finn is definitely a defender in my books.

Three in a row! It’s the first time we’ve won three National League games in a row since March 2022 (0-2 vs Dover, 2-1 vs Bromley, 2-0 vs Southend) – that’s a mind-boggling stat for a club the size of Yeovil, and now it’s time to try and make it four on the spin for the first time since September 2019. The performances are beginning to match the results, and I’m starting to feel that familiar tinge of excitement in my belly!

Let’s dare to dream… I know, I know – don’t get too far ahead of yourself Tom. But I think I can safely say that Yeovil fans are tired of not looking forward to anything. Let’s dare to dream, let’s look up the table and feel some kind of optimism now – we’ve got a talented, albeit thin, squad that will surely be strengthened in the coming weeks, a coaching setup packed with experience and new ideas, and a fanbase capable of powering the squad through any situation. Roll on Boreham Wood, it’s gonna be a tough one, but let’s dream of those three points…

Not many teams keep Altrincham at bay this season, but the Glovers did.

A single Morgan Williams goal was all that separated the two sides at Huish Park and for the second game in a row, Andrew Oluwabori was declared the Gloverscast Man of the Match.

Morgan Williams’ goal lands him a place on the podium of votes too, with Jed Ward keeping up his fine record of getting your votes.

Aaron Jarvis looks on.

Yeovil Town penalty hero Aaron Jarvis has said that the squad is “buzzing” after picking up a third straight win on Tuesday.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset’s Josh Perkins he said;

“We’re going on a great run now, it was a bit of an end to end game, especially in the first half, each goal was getting a lot of action, but we managed to do what we had to do today and that’s get another win on the board.”

The front man put home a second half penalty to land his first goal of the campaign and said it’s been a fair bit of time coming.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for that penalty, I haven’t actually been on the pitch when we’ve had one, it’s a sign, so, yeah, I was going to put my hands on that and put it down on the spot, I knew where I was going the whole time, and I’m glad to get off the mark.

I think I kind of deserve one with the amount of fouls that I don’t get, but like I said, happy to help the team get the three points today

It’s been a bit stop-start, especially this season, whether that’s not being selected or picking up a little knock here or there, but I’m there when needed and hopefully I’ll get a few more opportunities.”

After a run of form which has seen the Glovers get within touching distance of the play-offs he said the squad is in a good place.

“We’ve had three games in the last six days and a bit of travelling as well, so credit to the boys and the whole squad, we need to use the numbers especially off the bench as well, it’s not easy for the boys, but three wins from three, we are absolutely buzzing.”

Yeovil Town’s interim manager Richard Dryden says that the dressing room has real belief after notching up a third consecutive win.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins after the Tuesday night win over Sutton, he said that the whole club was in a good place after a busy few days;

“It’s been a good week, it’s been even less than a week, because it’s Wednesday-Saturday-Tuesday, it’s been a good week for the club, a good week for the players and for the fans.

Great support tonight, on a Tuesday night coming all the way up to London, it’s great support and it’s very much appreciated.”

Andrew Oluwabori got his first goal of his second loan spell with the club in the first half with an Aaron Jarvis winner proving to be the decisive moment of the second half; speaking of the loanee Dryden said;

“I just don’t know how he keeps the ball sometimes, I don’t know how he keeps the ball, but he does something, he looked a little bit tired first half, we had a bit of a chat at half time about doing a bit more of the horrible stuff – which he did – but his attitude towards being attacking and being positive is fantastic.”

“[The half time message] was do much the same, we had to be a little bit wary because of the number of minutes that the lads have had, I’m big on if you’re fit from winning a game, then go out and play again.

Tav did brilliantly, but I just thought he looked a little bit tired as the half went on and he’s done a lot of minutes on a short pre-season, but he’s been fantastic, and when you’ve got someone like Jarv to come on, it’s a big bonus.

We’re heavy up front with good players and players who can run as well.”

Yeovil have a thin squad, naming the same starting XI for the third game in a row and there was plenty of praise for how the side saw the game out too.

“The keeper made a great save first half, the back three, the wing backs – Simsy, is just a great right wing back when he should be playing as a ten, but how can you get him out of that position with what he’s done today? there are a lot of positives again.

I haven’t looked at the [Sutton] goal, I know it was a bit of a scramble, but it was a great finish,

It was a great finish, nice to see it go by Jarv, but there’s that little bit of belief, when you get pegged back a little bit and there’s always a chance.

We had to sit back a little bit today, but on the counter we looked strong, whoever was up front.”

The manager took time to give his squad their dues after a crazy few weeks, with the Glovers sitting outside the play-off spots by a fine margin.,

“I’ve been here since pre-season, with a good manager in Mark [Cooper], he’s been there, seen it and done it and got the club promoted from the league below, the roots were there, you could see it, that little bit of belief and we’ve got a good squad, we’ve got a little bit of experience, but we’ve got players who haven’t played in this league; Macca has come and just blossomed as the season has gone on. There’s a belief in there that we can win games and these are the games where you come and win and they’re great wins.

Now, we’ve got a lot of good teams coming up who are in the half where we are at the moment.

But I’m confident, if we set up right, we can win more games.

Let’s just keep picking up the points, there’s some real, real top class teams in this league, you can almost mark up the top eight with five or six teams already, so, we just keep plugging away and picking up points, we can’t get excited yet because we’ve got a long, long way to go, we’re a quarter of the way through the season, there’s a lots of ups and downs to come.”

Yeovil Town’s Under 19s have been knocked out of the FA Youth Cup after falling 3-1 to Dorset side Portland United.

The young Glovers took a first half lead through an Archie Appleby header but a strong second half showing from the hosts, inflicted what was the young lads’ first competitive defeat of the season.

George Geraghty, Jaydon Biss, Blake Watts all started the game having shared their time with Sherborne Town this season, with Ollie Hughes also in the starting line up having been named amongst the first team subs on a number of occasions.

Hughes is currently on a dual registration deal that allows him to make appearances for Plymouth Parkway too.

Yeovil won their third match in a row since Richard Dryden was appointed manager in a 2-1 win at Sutton United.

Andrew Oluwabori scored the opener for the Glovers in second half, before Charlie Bell equalised for the hosts. Aaron Jarvis converted an 82nd minute penalty to clinch another three points as Yeovil climbed to 8th in the table.

First half

Richard Dryden named an unchanged side for the third match in a row, with the Glovers boss hoping the momentum continues.

The first half-chance fell to Junior Morias on the edge who, after a sharp one-two with Tahvon Campbell, struck a weak effort at Jack Sims’ goal.

Yeovil should have been 1-0 up in the 8th minute through Andrew Oluwabori. Yeovil broke at pace through Oluwabori, Morias and Luke McCormick but the Exeter loanee could only strike straight at Sims.

Yeovil continued the pressure, attempting to work an space in front of goal, with Sutton just about managing the clear their lines. Good pressure from Dryden’s side.

On the 22nd minute it was only the frame of the goal keeping the game scoreless. Another bursting run from Oluwabori saw him get the ball to McCormick who opened his body and shot a left-footed looping effort from outside of the box that struck the bar. So close!

James Plant was given a yellow for hauling down a Sutton player outside the box as the hosts broke. Former Yeovil loanee Lewis Simper’s low free kick was comfortable for Jed Ward.

Simper tried another curling effort in the 29th minute which didn’t stretch Ward.

If that didn’t stretch Ward, the save moments later did. Yeovil’s number one somehow managed to get a foot on the ball to scoop Ashley Nadesan’s ball over the bar. Unbelievable save.

Sutton had the next chance, this time through Simper. A well worked move down the left saw a cross come into the box that the Glovers failed to deal with before Simper hooked an effort fairly wide of the goal.

Simper had another chance to test Ward from the edge of the box in the 39th minute. He could only volley into the houses behind the stand.

McCormick fired a free kick over the bar from a promising position just before the half time break.

Half time: Sutton United 0 Yeovil Town 0

Second half

Tahvon Campbell made way for Aaron Jarvis at half time, refreshing the Glovers’ frontline.

It was Ward who was called into action first though, saving low from Nadesan.

Yeovil could have had a chance at goal moments later but the referee blew up rather than play the advantage with the red and black shirts outnumbering the amber ones.

Oluwabori should have headed Yeovil in front shortly after with another golden opportunity spurned after combining with Jarvis.

Thankfully, Oluwabori finally made the breakthrough on the 51st minute with a low strike from the right side of the six yard box beating Sims in the Sutton goal! 1-0

Yeovil came close to doubling the lead afer a scintillating run from Sims saw him skip through the Sutton team before teeing up Morias who’s shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Sutton had an opportunity from a free kick, which after a long build up was high wide and handsome into the supporters behind the goal.

McCormick had half a sight at goal after Jed Ward’s free kick was knocked down into his path but he couldn’t connect cleanly to test Sims in the Sutton goal.

The hosts levelled it up in the 71st minute with a sumptuous left-footed finish from Charlie Bell leaving Ward helpless. 1-1

Yeovil very nearly fell behind minutes later with Brandon Njoku only able to direct his header over the bar  after getting on the end of a Vincent cross from the left.

Sutton looked to have all the momentum – and the legs – but in their quest for a winner were leaving spaces for Yeovil to exploit. Harvey Greenslade was released by Brett McGavin but could only fire over.

All that momentum was worth nothing, as Josh Sims earned the Glovers a penalty with his cross striking the arm of the Sutton defender and Aaron Jarvis fired the penalty home to restore Yeovil’s lead. 2-1

With 8 minutes added on from who knows where, there was a nervy conclusion to hold on to all three points and make it the third win on the spin for Richard Dryden’s Glovers!
