Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 136)

Jordan Thomas was the match-winner for Yeovil at Farnborough, making his first appearance in green-and-white from the bench after injury.

The full-back, who signed from Hampton & Richmond earlier this summer, said being back on the pitch was good for his ‘mental state’.

He appeared as a 66th-minute substitute in the 2-1 win at Farnborough Town on Saturday, scoring an 87th minute winner with a neat finish.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel: “I think just for my mental state, it helped just being back fit now and obviously it’s frustrating for myself, for the staff. But then now I’m back, I’m just gonna look forward. And then, yeah, just try and kick on and get as much fitness as I can into my legs and just be ready for the start of the season.”

Jordan Thomas at the end of the match at Farnborough Town.

The 23-year-old said he had been absent with a ‘mild strain’ in his hip but has still found being on the sidelines beneficial.

“It’s been different being on the sideline but still mixing in around with them. I think all the boys have been really welcoming and sort of had their arms around me and just helped me out, but I tried to make sure that I’m not too much of an energy drainer because we don’t need that in the team.

“It’s been so good to sort of see it from the sidelines just to pick up from a different view what the gaffer wants. Like how he wants us to play really, the style and what he requires of me from my position. So yeah, it’s being beneficial in a weird way, if I try and look at the positive,” he said.

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper has said he is still looking to bring in “one or two” new players who can “make a difference” as he prepares for the start of the National League Premier season.

The Glovers’ boss used his post-match interview following the 2-1 pre-season friendly win at Farnborough Town on Saturday to hit out at “trolls” who has believes are trying to destabilise the club.

He also confirmed winger Jordan Stevens, who has featured in all the club’s pre-season friendlies up until the trip to Hampshire, was no longer training at Huish Park having moved to the North.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Cooper said: “We are in the market for a couple of players, we are monitoring a couple, but we want to make sure we get the right ones.

There are players out there still hoping to get a League One or League Two club and they are not all going to get fixed up and we are waiting for that one or two that can really make the difference like we did last year (with the signings of goalkeeper Joe Day and full-back Michael Smith).  We waited then and we got the right ones.

Brandon Haunstrup made his second substitute appearance.

Former Portsmouth and Kilmarnock full-back Brandon Haunstrup, who has been on trial for the past ten days, appeared as a second half substitute in the win at Farnborough. But it appears ex-Charlton Athletic academy defender Jacob Roddy has departed and Stevens, who was released at the end of last season, has also moved on.

Cooper said he was frustrated at the negativity from “a minority” of people whilst praising supporters like those who joined a crowd of 622 on a sunny afternoon at Cherrywood Road on Saturday.

He added: “We have got a really tight, united group who have had a brilliant season last year. I have heard some comments that we had a budget bigger than some League Two teams which is complete dross, I have heard I have fallen out with the Chairman (Martin Hellier) which is complete dross.

I have heard so many different rumours that people look like they are trying to destabilise us when we should be going in to this season full of optimism. You get the people that come here today, fans that come and support us, get behind the boys and are buzzing that we win, but tonight there will be some trolls out there that will slaughter some players, slaughter everybody to do with the club and it is really frustrating.

This should be a really good club. The Chairman has put his money where his mouth is, there are lots of people that will talk about doing that, but not many that will do it. So fair play to him for that.

The boss added: “Things are not going to go well with the weather and pitch and everything every game, but we have to make sure we come and compete and get something out of it. We had loads of supporters here today and fair play to them, but you are always talking about a minority (of people who are not supportive). Whatever their beef is, they need to get behind the football club and drive us on because we are one campaign away from the Football League.

I am not going to stand here and say we are going to get promoted, but two teams have to get promoted. There are teams with bigger budgets than us, but we are competitive, we have a really good squad of players and we just need to add a couple to it.“.

The Glovers toiled for much of the afternoon at Cherrywood Road.

On to the game of football which took place on Saturday afternoon. A late winner from substitute Jordan Thomas, who was making his first appearance since signing from Hampton & Richmond in the summer, sealed victory and the Ted Pearce Memorial Trophy, a cup named after a former Farnborough manager.

Yeovil had been lacklustre up until they went behind when a trialist put the National League South hosts ahead after 67 minutes, but that goal and a flurry of substitutes which came moments before it, sparked the visitors in to life.

A superb solo run and finish from Dylan Morgan drew them level on 75 minutes before Thomas got the winner with three minutes of normal time remaining.

Cooper said: “The game started with the ball out of play for the first 15 minutes, we had a referee that in both teams’ opinion spoiled the game and slowed it down. The pitch was really dry and you are going to get that and it was a typical game towards the end of pre-season where all we got out of it was minutes in to the legs.

People will say why are you (picking that team) with the team which started the game, but we are just trying to manage minutes to make sure we get everybody ready for the first game of the season. The only positive was we won the game and got another trophy.”

Midfielder Charlie Cooper was withdrawn after 48 minutes which the manager said was down to “a tight hamstring.” He was replaced by Brett McGavin.

The Glovers travel to Buckland Athletic for their penultimate fixture of the pre-season campaign on Tuesday night, before travelling to Weston-super-Mare next Saturday.

A late Jordan Thomas goal secured Yeovil Town’s first piece of silverware of the season as they lifted the Ted Pearce Memorial Trophy with victory at Farnborough Town.

The full-back, who made his first appearance since arriving from Hampton & Richmond in the summer as a second half substitute, clipped a neat past keeper Jack Turner with three minutes remaining to seal the win.

The performance could not be described as a polished one from the visitors who found themselves a goal behind when a trialist gave Farnborough the lead on 67 minutes.

That sparked Yeovil in to life with substitute Dylan Morgan pulling them level again following a lovely run and finish after 75 minutes before Thomas sealed the win late on.

Up until Thomas’ goal, the game had been set to go to a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners of the trophy, named after a former Farnborough manager.

First half

It was Farnborough who asked a lot of early questions with a couple of long throws in to the box causing problems. The first meaningful effort of the game came after eight minutes when on loan Wycombe Wanderers’ midfielder Taylor Clark met a long throw and Glovers’ keeper Ollie Wright had to have his wits about him to keep the effort out.

Two minutes later a loose pass from Charlie Cooper on the edge of the hosts’ box was intercepted Ricky Holmes who broke away before being brought down by Frank Nouble, who got a booking for his troubles. The resulting free-kick from Olly Pendlebury forced another save from Wright.

Having chased shadows for much of the opening 15 minutes, the Glovers had a five-minute period of good possession before a 20th minute drinks’ break. Whilst looking more in control just before the break, there was not much going forward for travelling fans to get excited about with Aaron Jarvis looking isolated as the lone frontman.

Following the restart, neat flick from Sonny Blu Lo-Everton following a forward pass from Finn Cousin-Dawson set Michael Smith up to swing a boot on the edge of the box, but his effort was blocked. That is as good as it has got so far.

Smith was at the heart of another good move just after the half-hour mark, putting a ball up to the back post where Alex Whittle was arriving but the left-back could not get ahead of his marker to trouble Jack Turner in the Farnborough goal.

With a minute of the first half remaining, Holmes forced another smart stop from Wright before strike partner Mason Bloomfield put a close range header wide a minute later.

Aaron Jarvis spent much of the first half isolated.

Yeovil’s best chance of the first half came a minute in to injury time. A neat through ball by Jarvis set Nouble bearing down on goal, he went round the keeper but could not steer his effort in from a tight angle.

A better end to the half than the start, but still nothing to get too excited about.

Half time: Farnborough Town 0 Yeovil Town 0

Second half

Jordan Thomas warming up at half-time.

Three minutes in to the second half, Charlie Cooper went down and had to be replaced by Brett McGavin.

A nice move involving Smith and Young just evaded the head of Jarvis before Pendlebury fizzed a 60th minute free-kick just wide of Ollie Wright’s left-hand post.

Following a drinks’ break, Farnborough took the lead on 67 minutes. A clipped ball to the back post found  TRIALIST C at the back post and he headed past the despairing grasp of Wright.

Just before going behind, there were five changes for Yeovil. They included a first appearance for Jordan Thomas, who replaced Michael Smith at right-back, alongside trialist Brandon Haunstrup, Sam Pearson, Dylan Morgan and Harvey Greenslade also coming on. They replaced Whittle, Jarvis, Nouble and Lo-Everton.

On 75 minutes, the Glovers levelled courtesy of a virtuoso goal from Dylan MORGAN. He broke down the left side and into the box before coolly slotting home the equaliser. Well ignore what looked like a shove in the back from Matt Worthington at the start purely because of what a great run and finish it is from Morgan.

That seemed to liven the game up and on 80 minutes Pearson broke away on the counter attack before laying it off to Greenslade who scuffed his effort.

But with three minutes remaining, Jordan THOMAS was found by a near through ball from Harvey Greenslade nearly dinked it Farnborough keeper Jack Turner.

The trophy lift was not quite on a par with the end of last season (!) with travelling supporters at Cherrywood Road understandably doing it with a little more emotion. Champions again, right!?

Yeovil Town (4-4-2): Ollie Wright, Michael Smith (for Jordan Thomas, 66), Alex Whittle (for Brandon Haunstrup, 66), Finn Cousin-Dawson, Jake Wannell, Charlie Cooper (for Brett McGavin, 48), Matt Worthington, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton (for Dylan Morgan, 66), Jordan Young, Frank Nouble (for Sam Pearson, 66), Aaron Jarvis (for Harvey Greenslade, 66).

Substitutes (not used): Matt Gould.

Goals: Trialist C 67 (0-1), Dylan Morgan 75 (1-1), Jordan Thomas 87 (2-1).
Attendance
: 622

There is no Morgan Williams in the Yeovil Town squad for today’s pre-season friendly at Farnborough Town (3pm kick-off).

It is understood the central defender has an injury and has not been risked, but summer signing full-back Jordan Thomas is named among the substitutes against National League South opposition.

There is also no sign of Jordan Stevens, who has been training with the squad despite his release at the end of last season, and has featured in all the pre-season friendlies up until now.

Yeovil Town (4-4-2): Ollie Wright, Michael Smith, Alex Whittle, Finn Cousin-Dawson, Jake Wannell, Charlie Cooper, Matt Worthington, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Jordan Young, Frank Nouble, Aaron Jarvis.  Substitutes: Matt Gould, Jordan Thomas, Brandon Haunstrup, Brett McGavin, Sam Pearson, Dylan Morgan, Harvey Greenslade.

... I mean all the info you need is in the headline, but as you’ve made it this far.

Yeovil Town’s trip to Gateshead (nice and local) on Saturday 24th August will now kick off at 12:30pm.

This means Glovers fans will have to set off from Somerset sometime late on the 23rd 😉.

This change, is presumably to assist Yeovil get back from the very North with half a chance of getting some rest in before going again on Bank Holiday Monday against Rochdale (Mon 26th – 3pm).

If, like last year, National League TV have a service which covers all non-3pm games, it could well mean this game will be available to stream and watch.

Still, a hardy few will no doubt set their alarms early, board their planes, trains and automobiles and head north for a lunchtime kick off… nutters.

Tom Bailey is back with transfer round up of the National League, including Glovers corner…

Glovers’ Corner

Before we dive into the National League ins and outs, let’s look at the former Glovers that have moved about in the last couple of weeks. We may miss a few, so if any of you see any we may have missed, tag us on Facebook or Twitter (or X), or leave a comment below and we’ll add them in the next week’s round-up!

A very quiet week on the WATN watch this week, with only two Glovers (that we know of) moving about. Bevis Mugabi, who made over 100 appearances for Yeovil in his three year stint with the club, has joined Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta, while a Glover returning from Cyprus is Anthony Georgiou, who has signed for Wealdstone this week.

As part of the Gloverscast’s Associate Membership of the Football Supporters Association we’ve been contacted for some views from supporters on a couple of bits that are going to impact National League clubs and football in general in the next few months.

In April the Athletic revealed discussions had taken place for the top 16 teams in the National League Premier to play 16 under-21 teams from the Premier League.  Last weekend the Non League Paper reported that the National League Clubs have been told that competition will kick-off this season and is likely to being in November.

Here’s what we know about the competition:

  • 16 clubs from National League and 16 Premier League Academy sides will enter and EFL Trophy style cup.
  • There will be four regional groups of eight teams.
  • Group games will only be between National League and Premier League teams. The top two will qualify for quarter finals.
  • National League Clubs will host group and knockout matches until the final.
  • Matches will be available on National League TV.

So, what are your thoughts about the competition? Are you supportive? Who will benefit? There’s a quick snap poll below, but share any comments below.

Independent football regulator

The second is around the introduction of the Football Governance Bill which looks set to be introduced by Labour after work done by Tracey Crouch in the previous Government.

A very top line summary of the bill indicates that the regulator would:

  • Create a statutory, strengthened owners’ and directors’ tests to make sure a club’s custodians are suitable and protect fans from irresponsible owners. The tests will consist of 3 key elements: a fitness test (owners and directors), a source of wealth test (owners only), and a requirement for financial plans and resources (owners only).
  • Enhanced financial regulation to improve the financial resilience of clubs across the football pyramid, ensuring that clubs take sensible financial decisions and risks are mitigated so they do not jeopardise the club’s future.
  • Placing fan engagement requirements on clubs and requiring clubs to comply with heritage protections. This will require clubs to have a framework in place to regularly meet a representative group of fans to discuss key strategic matters at the club, and other issues of interest to supporters (including club heritage).
  • Require clubs to seek approval if they propose a sale or relocation of their home ground.
  • Prevent English clubs from joining breakaway or unlicensed leagues.
  • Introduce a backstop power to intervene in the distribution of broadcast revenue where necessary (subject to certain thresholds being met).
  • Establish a ‘Football Club Corporate Governance Code’. Clubs will be required to report on corporate governance, setting out how they are applying the code.

With all that, let us know on this poll and if you have any other thoughts comment below.

Yeovil’s final pre-season action at Huish Park saw them fall to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of League One Exeter City last night. An early gift for Sonny Cox allowed the former Glover loanee to put the Grecians 1-0 up after four minutes, giving Mark Cooper’s side an uphill struggle for the remainder of the evening.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel, Cooper said: “[It was a] good workout for us. First 10-15 minutes we were really good with the ball [but we] gave a horrendous goal away which turned the game around.

“Exeter gave us a real test with the ball and the rotations were really good, so it was a tough evening for us, but that’s what we wanted. It’s no real benefit for us winning 5, 6 ,7-1 in the friendlies it’s about when we come up against real quality teams and League One players, that we have to make sure we’re organised. So, still lot still lots to ponder for us.”

Sonny Cox

Last season Sonny Cox scored a couple of important goals for the Glovers while on loan, before returning to make an impact for Exeter and it took him a few minutes to show what he’s capable of.  Cooper said: “It was just a rubbish goal to give away. We’re in control of the of the ball, a loose turnover and you know, Sonny Cox goes through and scores, does what he does really well and a great finish.

“That panicked us a little bit and we started turning the ball over far too much. That was the crux tonight, we turned the ball over far too much, and if you do that against teams that are two leagues higher than you, it’s going to be a long a long evening and it was. But for us, fitness is key at the moment, we’ve still got over three weeks so we’ve got a real good week next week to get stuck into the boys and get more stuff nailed down.”

The Glovers showed an improvement in the second half, with Frank Nouble grabbing a goal after a loose pass from an Exeter defender, and Dylan Morgan missing a penalty. The boss felt this was more down to Exeter making wholesale changes, though: “Yeah, but we have to be honest. Exeter put all their kids on the pitch, which gave us chance to get closer to them and you know, even then you saw their young boys were really good and scored a couple of goals. You know, I think they change and put nearly all kids on with half an hour to go, which gave us a chance to get closer to them which we did, obviously missed a penalty to make it even more interesting, but that’s just a good workout for us.”

There were spots on the bench for youth players Cody Koerner and Krystian Woods as well as a new left-sided defensive trialist that we believe is Brandon Haunstrup. There was no sign of Jacob Roddy who’s been involved in the first three pre-season matches. The boss admitted that he still feels the squad is a bit light: “We’re a couple of players short. We know that and we’re looking and seeing who’s available, who can we attract when we get to a position where we can move to bring somebody in.”

On the academy he added: “It’s important that we keep trying to push the young boys. We’re trying to get that sort of connection with the with the Academy that if they are good enough, there’s a realistic pathway for them and we put another couple on tonight.”

Yeovil travel to Farnborough next Saturday before visiting Buckland Athletic and Weston-super-Mare with the National League South opponents “the more useful test” of where the players are ahead of the National League kick off on the 10th August.

For the second time in just a few days, Yeovil Town fell short against EFL opposition as the Glovers lost 3-1 to Exeter City at Huish Park in front of a cracking crowd of over 2,500 – it wasn’t that long ago that would have been an impressive league attendance!

The Glovers found themselves 1-0 down at half time, thanks to a goal from former Huish Park loanee, Sonny Cox.

The second half was more of a goal fest, with Santino Ohanaka and Kieran Wilson notching for the Grecians, Frank Nouble did pull a goal back and Dylan Morgan saw a late penalty saved by the Exeter ‘Keeper Joe Whitworth.

Both Charlie Cooper and Frank Nouble picked up the lesser-spotted pre-season booking (it’s only a friendly, ref, chill out) and both ‘keepers were forced into more than a couple of good saves.

Gloverscast Ian was there at Huish Park, but was trying to keep a small child entertained so a full match report might not have been possible, but I’m sure we’ll chat about the game in full on the next podcast.

The general consensus from Gloverscast sources was that the second half was better than the first, Brett McGavin and Dylan Morgan both impressed from the bench and there more minutes for young Glovers Corey Koerner and Krystian Woods.

Here are a couple of headlines:

We have a new trialist, Brandon Haunstrup. Haunstrup, 27, was introduced in the 70th minute, predominantly a left back with SPL experience and played for Cambridge and Gateshead (loan) last season, his time with the U’s came to an end at the end of last season.

We won a penalty (yay!). We missed a penalty (boo). Dylan Morgan missed the chance to get the Glovers back in the game with a spot kick, his effort was saved by the Exeter ‘keeper.

That’s Huish Park done until Hartlepool. Just the two friendlies were scheduled in for Huish Park this summer, with Farnborough (Sat 27th), Buckland (Tues 30th) and Weston super-Mare (Sat 3rd) all away from Somerset’s Premier football venue.

Yeovil Team:

Wright (Gould ’70), Smith (Williams ’45), Wannell (Stevens ’45), Cousin-Dawson, Whittle (Haunstrup ’70), Cooper (McGavin ’62), Lo-Everton, Worthington (Koerner ’70), Pearson (Morgan ’70), Nouble (Woods ’85), Jarvis (Greenslade ’70)
