Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 130)

Yeovil Town have named a side made up entirely of their Under-18s squad for tonight’s Somerset Men’s Premier Cup second round at a rain-soaked Huish Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

Among the XI is Ollie Hughes, the young striker who was named on the substitutes’ bench for the Glovers’ first-team fixture against Braintree Town on Saturday.

The Under-18s are playing this season in the Western Counties Floodlight Youth League, they currently sit in fifth place after five games.

The club has confirmed the game will be live streamed on its YouTube channel – here.

Yeovil Town: Louis Parker, Mason Alden, Blake Watts, Jacob Shore (captain), Jaydon Biss, Solomon Padmore, Joe Crisp, Nansimir Nanev, George Geraghty, Morgan Alexander, Ollie Hughes. Substitutes: Ryan Collins, Denzil Gurung, Oscar Foot, Joshua Ansell, Alec Thomas, Joshua Haskett, Leyton Westlake.

Weston-super-Mare: Kelland Absalom, Ash Ouza, Jordan Bastin, Theo Lynden, Jack Harding, Louis Singfield, Harvey Akers, Dylan Kadji, Brandon Bak, Nick McCootie, Zak Kempster. Substitutes: Takunda Mutota, Dan Pashley, Gabriel Garrett, Josh Oliver, Dylan Long, Ted Milne, Leighton Green.

“There’s chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost is nipping at your nose… there’s darts on at the Ally Pally and it’s transfer rumour silly season for the ‘In The Knows'”

– that’s how the song goes, right!?

Yeovil Town loanee Ed James has been linked with a move to one of several teams, currently plying their trade in the Premier League and EFL.

The Exeter loanee has been watched by West Ham, Southampton and Norwich if Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider is to be believed.

James scored his first goal in Green and White at the weekend and has a couple more weeks of his original loan deal still to go.

It’s a path well trodden, it was just a couple of years ago that the Grecians let us borrow defender Alfie Pond before Wolves came knocking in the January window.

Appropriate pinches of salt required with rumours of this nature of course, but interesting nonetheless.

National League Title Sponsors Vanarama have named their Team of the Week and the Glovers are represented by defender Michael Smith in the side.

Smith was back in the starting line up and integral as Yeovil came from behind to secure the points in a 3-1 win.

A shout out to Andrew ‘The Right Winger’ Oluwabori who also made the side for his new side Halifax Town.

Yeovil picked up an important three points to keep pace with the playoff pack yesterday. Here are five conclusions from my view from the Huish Park press box.

It was the result we needed after Tuesday. It was important that Yeovil reacted off the back of the disappointment of W*ymouth and pick up three points. While the performance over the entire 90 minutes wasn’t rip-roaring, three goals after lots of change before and during the match (on and off the the pitch) shows the resilience in this group of players.

The initial changes didn’t quite work. It was quite a radical adjustment following W*ymouth with the five changes, albeit enforced with injuries to Plant and Whittle, and it didn’t properly click. Yeovil didn’t enjoy the usual control of the game that we’ve become accustomed to. I thought we were quite compact centrally with Cooper, Worthington and McGavin all treading on eachothers’ toes and Braintree were able to control the first half.

The second half changes worked. The switch to the more familiar 3-4-3 was more comfortable for the players and they gained more of a foothold in the match. Ed James header forced Braintree to chase the game and when we switched to a 4-2-3-1 we were able to make the most of the space. Sims, Nouble and Morgan all made a difference from the bench, with Morgan being absolutely pivotal for Brett McGavin’s clincher.

Kofi Shaw (Pic C/O Gary Brown)

Keep mavericks in football. Kofi Shaw enjoyed another afternoon at Huish Park (much like against Maidenhead) where he had a free role and covered every blade of grass. He’s brave on the ball and is happy to put himself about against bigger lads too. He’s the kind of player who thrives when given license to roam and pull strings. Consistency is the challenge here. Can he do it week in week out and will he get the opportunity to do it?

We’re keeping pace and in the playoffs. The reaction from Tuesday was justified and warranted. It should never have happened. But, in the league we are in the playoff positions again and I think we’re absolutely punching above our weight right now. I understand that the style isn’t to everyone’s taste and there is a split among supporters, but to be 7th with this group at this stage of the season is an achievement. Keep the faith!

A busy week for the Glovers and those associated to Yeovil Town out and about on loan.

We start in the National League South and Harvey Greenslade has his first two appearances for Weston-super-Mare in the books.

The forward made his debut appearance in a 0-0 draw at Hampton & Richmond on Tuesday night and started for the Seagulls in their 1-1 draw at home to third-from-bottom Enfield Town on Saturday.

If the aim of moving to North Somerset was for the ex-Bristol Rovers’ youngster to get minutes, he’s had 180 of them in the first two appearances. Weston’s next match is a rearranged Somerset Men’s Premier Cup second round tie at Huish Park on Wednesday night.

Defender Jordan Thomas is top of the National League South with his Torquay side, the defender played the full 90 minutes for the Gulls on Saturday in their 2-0 win over sixth-placed Farnborough Town.

At the other end of the league. W*ymouth had a quick turnaround from their cup final in midweek.

They were beaten 3-0 by Hemel Hempstead Town. Glovers’ goalkeeper Will Buse was back between the sticks.

They probably won’t make a commemorative mug about this one.

Into the local divisions and Corey Koerner was in the Sherborne Town starting line-up in midweek.

They were beaten fairly soundly by AFC Stoneham, but were in far better form on Saturday winning 3-0 – sadly, team-sheets are tough to come by, we cannot tell you if Koerner was involved.

Down at Tavistock, young defender Jacob Shore was used from the bench in a 1-0 away loss to Evesham Utd.

He was carded not long after coming on.

At Bridport, Under-18s’ player Sol Padmore was in the starting line up for their 6-3 win over Elburton Villa, young striker George Geraghty is also with the ‘Port now and was used from the bench.

Mason Alden started for Welton Rovers in their defeat by Saltash United.

Captain Matt Worthington paid tribute to Yeovil Town’s substitutes for helping them secure three points with a 3-1 home win over Braintree Town today.

The Glovers made five changes to their starting XI from the FA Trophy exit at the hands of local rivals W*ymouth in midweek, but made five changes in the second half when they scored two goals to seal victory.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah, the skipper said: “The season is going to take everyone in the squad and (the substitutes) all made a massive difference. Dylan Morgan did well to set up Brett’s (McGavin) goal at the end, Frank (Nouble) was a threat when he came on, but it is going to take all of us to achieve with what we want to this season.

The Glovers had to come from 1-0 down when John Akinde put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes before Aaron Jarvis levelled just before the half-hour mark to go in level at the break.

They brought on striker Frank Nouble and defender Finn-Cousin Dawson before on loan Exeter City defender Ed James put them ahead on the hour. Dylan Morgan and Josh Sims then came on with Morgan’s surging run setting up Brett McGavin’s third goal in second half injury time.

On the performance, Worthy added: “We had to dig in, I thought they played well. It was tough, the pitch was chewed up a little bit  and it was tough to get our momentum with the ball. We knew that whatever it took to get a result after Tuesday, so overall we were just pleased to get the win.

It was a tough week after Tuesday, a few people said some things that needed to be said. It was a massive game and we were really disappointed with it. We looked back at it and and saw the reasons why we lost, so today was about putting on a gritty, tough performance.”

It was a return to winning ways for Yeovil, as they defeated Braintree Town to return to the playoff spots in a 3-1 win. Let’s see what else went on around the grounds…

We begin in Hampshire, where FC Halifax Town left the south as victors in a 4-3 thriller against Aldershot Town; former Glover Andrew Oluwabori found himself on the scoresheet for the Shaymen. A first half annihilation was all it took for Barnet to dispose of managerless Ebbsfleet United, another former Glover scoring as Rhys Browne bagged the third in a 4-1 win. Gateshead returned to winning ways in a 4-0 drubbing of Woking, putting further pressure on Woking boss Michael Doyle.

Oldham Athletic came from two behind to secure a 3-2 victory over Wealdstone, Josh Stones bagging a double in the process, while AFC Fylde and Eastleigh had to share the spoils in a 2-2 tie thanks to a 95th minute equaliser from young Danny Ormerod. There was late drama in both of the 1-1 draws today, as a 90th minute goal from Jordan Cullinane-Liburd rescued a point for Tamworth against York City, while a 96th minute equaliser from Alex Whitmore spared Solihull Moors a point away at 10-man Maidenhead United.

There were three 1-0 wins, as Dagenham & RedbridgeForest Green Rovers and Altrincham defeated Rochdale, Boston United and Sutton United respectively, and finally, Southend United and Hartlepool United played out a 0-0 draw.
