November 2024 (Page 3)

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper was a man of few words when he spoke to BBC Somerset reporter Jack Killah ahead of tonight’s home match with Barnet at Huish Park.

Here’s a summary of what he said…..

On the response to Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at York City….

The game was over after ten minutes (following the dismissal of defender Finn Cousin-Dawson), you just have to wipe your mouth and get on with it. It’s just one of those things, you just have to move on to the next one.

On the loan signing of defender Ed James on loan from Exeter City….

We have known about him for a while. We have got a good relationship with Exeter and we had to act fast. He is really local so it worked out well.

The formation for tonight..

It is a back five. We are playing 3-4-3 like we usually do. Alex Whittle will play left-sided centre back of a back three.

Tonight’s opponents Barnet…

They are really good to watch, very expansive, very well-coached, I’m looking forward to it. They will finish in the top three.

What do we need to do tonight?….

Be aggressive, on the front foot, ask questions of them.

Frank Nouble’s return to the starting XI….

It’s not just Frank (that needs a goal), we have got three or four players in there that need to step up a little bit and I am sure Frank will tonight.

On loan Exeter City defender Ed James is handed his Yeovil Town debut as we face Barnet in the National League Premier Division at Huish Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

The 19-year-old, whose arrival was announced by the club this evening, lines up alongside Morgan Williams, Michael Smith and Alex Whittle.

The Glovers are without the suspended Jake Wannell, Finn Cousin-Dawson and Dom Bernard following a spate of red cards in their previous two matches.

Frank Nouble comes in to the starting line-up in place of Bristol Rovers’ loanee Kofi Shaw, who is named amongst the Glovers’ substitutes.

Barnet include Yeovil-born Ryan Glover, who joined following his departure from Aldershot Town in the summer, in their starting XI.

Teenage defender Ed James has bolstered Yeovil Town’s depleted defensive ranks ahead of tonight’s visit from high-flying Barnet to Huish Park.

The 19-year-old, who had spells on loan at Weston-super-Mare in National League South and Southern League Premier Division South side Dorchester Town, has joined on loan from League One Exeter City until January.

He has made three appearances for the Grecians in the EFL Trophy – sponsored by Vertu or Bristol Street Motors, as you prefer – this season. He made his League One debut for the club coming off the bench in a 4-2 home defeat to Oxford United in October 2022.

The Glovers are without the suspended Jake Wannell, Finn Cousin-Dawson and Dom Bernard for tonight’s National League Premier fixture, following red cards in the 4-0 defeat at York City last weekend and the 1-0 home loss to FC Halifax Town seven days earlier.

Welcome to Somerset, Ed! The rest of you, leave your boots at home for tonight!

Another big game for Yeovil Town in midweek, as they welcome the third placed Barnet to Huish Park on Wednesday evening.

Form Guide…

The Glovers have seemed to come out of their purple patch in recent weeks, with back to back defeats to York City and Halifax. Mark Cooper will be hoping that his side can avoid making it three on the trot.

York City vs Yeovil Town, 24th November.

Barnet have been in good form so far this season with 13 wins so far.

Over their last five fixtures the Bees have won three, drawn one and lost one. The loss was in the FA Cup to Exeter City however. Last time out saw the London side defeat Woking 2-0.

Away from has been where Barnet have lost, with defeats to York and Solihull Moors respectively.

Key Players…

Yeovil Town – Ollie Wright

With a whole host of defenders suspended for the Glovers, the shot stopper will have to be on top form against a team that has scored 40 goals so far this season.

Wright has come under scrutiny in recent weeks from some sections of the fan base, but he has shown he has more than enough quality to turn around performances.

Barnet – Callum Stead

The centre forwards for Barnet have been excellent this season, with Stead’s colleague, Nicke Kabamba bagging nine goals.

We’ve chosen 24-year-old however due to his all round game. In front of goal Stead has bagged two less than Kabamba, with seven goals. He has also two assists as well, showing he can bring player around him into play.

The centre forward will be a handful for make shift Yeovil defence which see sees three starters out with suspensions. Stead and Kabamba will prove hard to keep quiet.

Thats what he said…

Barnets assistant, Connor Smith, spoke to their clubs media before the game. He said: “Every away game is tough at this level, they’re going really well, they had a tough game at the weekend.

They’re a good side, they play good football, with some good youngster and experienced players. Travelling away on an evening game is always tricky so we’ll keep our guard up.”

We’ve met before…

The two teams have met 15 times since 2015 with the Glovers winning six, one more than Barnet who have five wins with the two teams drawing four times.

The last time this fixture was played Barnet ran out winners 2-1 back in March 2023.

Don’t I know you…

The Glovers have four connections to the Barnet team and staff. Two of the Bees playing squad have spent time in the southwest.

Billy Clifford spent time on loan, from Chelsea, at Huish Park in 2013, making 0 appearances for the Yeovil though.

Rhys Browne is the second of the playing squad to have played for Yeovil, making 63 appearances between 2017-2019.

Barnet assistant manager Connor Smith played alongside Browne between 17-18 when playing 19 games for the Glovers.

Lastly, the Bees analyst,  Danny Hutchins also spent time during his playing days in Somerset. The former midfielder was on loan from Tottenham during the 2009 season, which was made permanent for the 2009-10 season. Hutchins played a total of 27 games for the Glovers.

Who’s been naughty then…

Jake Wannell, Finn Cousin-Dawson and Dom Bernard are all suspended

Jake Wannell is flabbergasted at the decision to send him off.

Yeovil Town youngster Corey Koerner has been selected for the England Colleges Squad for their upcoming games.

The Under 18s skipper, spent a couple of days on trial in October and has been selected by head coach Darin Killpartrick for their Winter fixtures.

The first game is on Friday (29th November) where they take on their Welsh counterparts, before more dates in December and into 2025.

Koerner follows in the footsteps of Ollie Haste who was also a member of the Colleges set up at international level a couple of years ago.

Everyone at The Gloverscast wishes Corey all the best on this adventure.

Yeovil Town (or Weston-super-Mare) will be at home in the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup Quarter Final.

The Glovers, should they get through, will host either Wells City or current holders Taunton Town.

Ties for this round need to be completed before the end of January 2025.

At time of writing, no new confirmed date has been set in stone for the Last 16 clash vs Weston-super-Mare after the original tie at Huish Park was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Taunton will play Wells on Tuesday 3rd January for their spot in the next round.

“In order to be able to park for more than two hours at the LNER, you have to spend £5 in one of the shops around the ground.”

Yeovil Town host Barnet this coming Wednesday night (remember, Wednesday… not Tuesday!) and the referee for the clash is Mr Andrew Humphries.

He has already officiated one Barnet game this season, a 2-1 win over Forest Green Rovers, where he gave three yellows and one red – to Rovers’ Sean Long.

He’s been far more card happy for Premier League youngsters than National League games this season – one clash between Norwich and Man Utd U21s saw eight goals… and TEN yellow cards!

He’s never taken charge of a Yeovil Town game.

Mr Humphries will be assisted by Sean Rothwell, Jake Hillier and Lewis Sandoe

It was a day to forget for the Glovers, as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat away to league leaders York City. Let’s see what else went on around the grounds on a chilly and wet Saturday afternoon…

We begin in the Midlands, where Solihull Moors were involved in another goal fest- this time out, they finished on the wrong end of the scoreline, as Hartlepool United came from behind to register a remarkable 3-4 victory. While it was four at York, it was five at Maidenhead, as Gateshead ran riot and kept a clean sheet in the process.

It was a first home victory of the season for Boston United under new manager Graham Coughlan in a 3-1 win against Braintree Town, including a comical error from Braintree ‘keeper Lucas Covolan to compound their woes. Southend United came from behind twice in a 2-2 draw with former league leaders Forest Green Rovers, while a Dan Creaney double handed Tamworth a first league win since mid-October in a 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

It was almost exactly the same case for Aldershot Town; a double for James Henry, a first win since mid-October, and a 2-1 win against mid-table opposition, this time in the shape of Altrincham. Former Glover Rhys Browne got himself on the scoresheet for Barnet in a 2-0 win over Woking, while Eastleigh and Wealdstone shared the points in a 1-1 draw.

There were three postponed fixtures due to the weekend’s weather, as the lunchtime derby between Rochdale and Oldham Athletic was called off, as well as a late postponement between AFC Fylde and Ebbsfleet United. FC Halifax Town and Sutton United both stayed home, as it was confirmed they wouldn’t play on Friday night.
