Yeovil Town Women were knocked out of the Women’s FA Cup at the hands of Portishead Town at Alvington on Sunday.

The visitors took an early lead but were reduced to ten players after a clumsy challenge on Erin Bloomfield resulted in a red card.

Bloomfield equalised from the penalty spot after half-time, but two late Portishead goals saw the tie go their way.

Yeovil started the brighter, with Bloomfield looking dangerous from the off as she fired a warning shot from outside the box just wide of the post.

It was Portishead who went ahead on 20 minutes, though, as Shannon Holloway raced onto a ball over the top and benefitted when goalkeeper Emily Hall came out to clear. The ball bounced off the forward and into the net.

But when Bloomfield got into a foot race with the Posset defender, she was hauled to the ground, leaving the referee with no choice but to brandish a red card.

Jodi Cornwall couldn’t quite make it a double punishment. Her strike from the resulting free-kick was blocked by the wall, while her volley at the second attempt drew an excellent save from Abi Footner.

The Glovers found the equaliser shortly after the break when Bloomfield was tripped in the box, and she picked herself up to thump the resulting penalty home.

Despite their efforts to turn the tie around, Dave Court’s side fell behind again to a moment of real quality from Lilly Farr, who raced down the left before giving Hall no chance with a fierce finish.

With Yeovil committing bodies forward, they were undone when a long ball found Mia Blazey, who lobbed Hall to end the Glovers’ FA Cup journey at the Third Qualifying Round stage.

Next up for the Glovers is a tasty local derby against Sherborne Town, who visit Alvington on Sunday 11th October, with kick-off at 2pm.
