Darren Sarll wants to write another chapter in the Yeovil Town‘s FA Cup history books when he takes on his old club Stevenage in front of the television cameras on Saturday.

The Glovers’ boss said he has been looking forward to to facing his old club since the draw was made and admitted he would love to have some Cup memories to share having heard his assistant, club legend Terry Skiverton, talk about his so much!

Speaking to the media ahead of the game, Sarll said: “I want to create history so people stop asking me about the history! Terry has been here and seen all those big games, he still talks about marking (Liverpool striker Emile) Heskey, (Jose) Mourinho coming here with Man United.

“They’re all wonderful memories and the reason he talks about them is because they are good memories for him.

“We would like to create our own and that’s what we are in it for because no-one becomes a millionaire being here, it’s for the memories and attachments you can make for people, supporters and players.”

In team news ahead of the weekend, the manager gave the following updates:

  • Midfielder Tom Knowlesshould be available” for selection if he can pass the latest stage of testing after being wrestling slammed to the ground by Dover Athletic defender Danny Collinge in last weekend’s 1-1 draw.
The manager said that he had been “going through protocols” with the Huish Park doctor, Chris Minton, and had not trained all week and missed the midweek win at Wrexham.
  • A decision will be made today (Friday) on whether striker Reuben Reid is available for the second round tie saying the former Cheltenham Town and Plymouth Argyle man was “very close” to being available.
The manager said: “If we can get through today training, we have discussion this afternoon whether he feels he’s in a good enough place to contribute.
“If he’s not, we will leave it one week, if he is, you will definitely see him on the team-sheet tomorrow.
  • Defender Mark Little was expected to have his first running session on Friday.
Both  the former Bristol City full-back and Middlesbrough loanee defender Jack Robinson were targeting a return for the Boxing Day match at Torquay United.
Sarll said: “Hopefully next week we will have him kicking a ball again and then he’s maybe a couple of weeks from joining training.
“Mark always had Boxing Day in mind to be back in the squad, we hope it’s earlier, and the same for Jack who should be back for that Christmas period.
  • The absence of midfielder Mitch Rose was “not about injury, but about resources.” Sarll added: “I would love for him to be with us tomorrow, he’s a brilliant player, but he’s not available.

Tom Knowles is a doubt for Yeovil Town’s next two matches after suffering concussion in the 1-1 draw at home to Dover Athletic.

The midfielder went off after an altercation with visiting defender Danny Collinge who was only booked for the incident with Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll called “reckless, forceful and over the top.

The boss said he could be without the 23-year-old for the next two matches, but, if the injury is confirmed as concussion, it could see him miss the next three.

Speaking after the match, the manager said: “Hulk Hogan (Collinge) put him on the shoulder and slammed him in to the floor and Tom now has concussion and will be touch and go for the next two games.

“I’m not sure how the officials saw that as a booking, I would say that was reckless, forceful, over the top because wee Tom has just been slammed on his head.

The FA’s guidelines on concussion say players confirmed as suffering concussion cannot play for 19 days in total

That would put Knowles out for next Tuesday’s trip to Wrexham, the FA Cup second round tie at home to Stevenage next weekend, and the National League home fixture with Barnet on December 11.

If the injury is confirmed as concussion, that could mean that Knowles may not return until the FA Trophy third round match on December 18.

There are some specific circumstances where players can return from concussion after six days, but, if it is confirmed as concussion, it seems likely we will be without Knowles for some time.

Tom Knowles has been named in the Vanarama National League Team of the Week for his performance in the 2-1 home win over Eastleigh.

The Yeovil Town attacker lit up Huish Park with an outstanding opening goal just before half time to put his side  ahead.

The goal was the 23-year-old’s second of the season and came just 36 hours after he spoke about his desire to find the net more regularly.

Congratulations TK, here’s to many more thunder b*stards!

Yeovil Manager Darren Sarll spoke of his praise at the attitude of his side after a gritty, but impressive, 2-1 win over Eastleigh on Saturday.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, the gaffer said it may not have been a beautiful game, but he saw a lot that he liked from his side.

“I don’t think it was very pleasing on the eye, the performance, but for effort, togetherness, physicality, physical performance, attitude – any of those key fundamentals I thought it was 10/10” (we know you mean 7/7, really)

“To recover after the (Eastleigh) goal was great, I had a feeling we would recover with (Luke) Wilkinson back out there, because of his experience. I thought their desire to win a game of football was incredible.”

The two Glovers’ goals came from super strikes from Tom Knowles and Adi Yussuf and the Manager spoke of how they’re both showing some of their best form

“I thought the first half performance was the better of the two halves, for us, especially offensively, but I didn’t feel like we had that ruthless mentality.

“It was only every going to be a wonderful strike like Tom produced, that allowed us to go in one-up”

“I thought we played with a lot of creativity first half… I thought (Dale) Gorman was outstanding with Knowles, feeding him the ball and the front three were a real threat”

“We all know Tom is capable, it’s only ever a matter of time, Tom’s very much a ‘flurry’ goal scorer, so hopefully that’s the start of a good return from him now.”

“I thought (Joe) Quigley was outstanding when he came on, Sonny (Blu Lo-Everton) played in three or four different positions and Morgan Williams made the most telling contributions late on with his block”

“I’m really pleased for Adi, he looked fitter today, he looked sharper – I’m sure he was delighted to play on Wednesday (vs Larkhall in the SPC – for context, add sarcasm) – but I don’t care, he had to play, because he needs to get fitter and as he gets fitter we’ll see that”

“I was really pleased for Adi, because he worked hard today, I think he endeared himself to our supporters today”

Tom Knowles is hoping his partnership with fellow forward Charlie Wakefield can prove as prolific as the one he enjoyed last season with loanee Josh Neufville.

He got on the scoresheet for the first time in his last outing at Huish Park when Wakefield bagged the other in a 2-0 win.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s home game with Eastleigh, Knowles said: “Chaz is similar to Josh last season, they have raw, out and out pace and really good technical ability so from last year when I scored a few goals, that was the recipe we had.

“Add (Joe Quigley) in to that and Adi (Yussuf) as well and hopefully now after scoring a few last weekend we will kick on and keep contributing.”

The 23-year-old was in fine form in the closing stages of last season weighing in with five goals in the final two months of an otherwise disappointing campaign.

He revealed he has been speaking with manager Darren Sarll about how to manage his frustration at not finding the net.

The wideman said: “We’ve had a few conversations and I am my own biggest critic, whether I misplace a pass or whatever I will be annoyed.

“It’s more about knowing myself and my own game, knowing I might not do everything perfectly but that is okay, just do a job for the team.

“I am learning more about dealing with my frustration but that is because I want to do well and do my bit for the team.”

Yeovil Town attacker Tom Knowles spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 1-1 with Altrincham

Knowles was please with his team mates’ reaction to the loss against Notts County but was frustrated that the winning goal didn’t come.

“We knew we had to be better than we were on Saturday, and we did that, every one of us was brilliant tonight, but it was one of those night where it wouldn’t go in for us”

Both Knowles and manager Darren Sarll spoke about how a second half chance to Josh Staunton was deemed not to have crossed the line, Knowles, like his manager thinks the decision went against the home side.

“We thought it went in, we’re a bit disappointed the officials might have let us down on that one, but we gave it out all”

“We were all up, we all thought it was a goal, the linesman and the ref were the only two people in the stadium who didn’t think it went in, which is frustrating because we’ve worked so hard to get these goals.”

The fomer Cambridge man spoke of how his role has changed and how his form has dipped but that he is starting to feel more like the player we saw last season.

“I know the past couple weeks, I haven’t been myself, but tonight I felt back to how I have been and how I was playing, a goal would have topped it off and the three points, but I’m a lot more confident, the team tonight – I’m sure you can all see – are more confident and hopefully we can take that into Saturday”

Tom Knowles has backed loan signing Lewis Simper to be an exciting attacking force when he returns after a spell on the sidelines.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined on loan from Cambridge United in July but has not featured having fallen ill with COVID-19 followed by an injury which saw him return to his parent club for treatment.

However, Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll confirmed he hopes to have him back with his squad later next week.

Knowles was a good friend of Simper’s from their time together at Cambridge and said the pair spoke about how his game had developed since arriving in Somerset.

He said: “I have known Lewis from my time at Cambridge, when he knew Yeovil were interested in taking him on loan he was straight on the phone to me.

“I could not sell the club more to him and he was really keen to get down and play and I told him how good it had been for me and my development.

“For him, this is a great opportunity to come here and get some games and play well and I am sure when he’s back on the pitch he is going to excite the fans.

“He is going to chip in with some goals and you will get 100% from him every week, he’s a really talented player and I am sure he will hit the ground running and the fans will enjoy watching him play.

On Tuesday, Cambridge boss Mark Bonner confirmed Simper was back at the League One club to aid his recovery.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s visit to Boreham Wood, Sarll added: “I think  Monday at the earliest, I would expect next Thursday he will be back in with us which would be good.”

Knowles added that he hopes to find his scoring form having had a prolific pre-season, but was full of praise for his team-mates Joe Quigley and fellow winger Charlie Wakefield.

He said: “We have a good balance across the front three because (Charlie Wakefield) is a lot like Josh (Neufville) from last year, a great ball carrier who gets down the line and gets crosses in.

“Joe has obviously had great start to the season, chipping in with a lot of goals, and he can do a lot, running in behind or being a target man, he is very technically gifted.

“For me this year, I have played more out on the left, so I like to roll in and link up with Joe and Charlie because I know they are going to be there.

Yeovil Town midfielders Dale Gorman and Tom Knowles are both doubts for the weekend’s trip to big-spending Stockport County.

Manager Darren Sarll said the pair had picked up minor injuries after playing three games in the space of a week.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, the boss said: “We had a few concerns with (Dale) Gorman and Tom Knowles, a couple of little niggly ones from three games in a short space of time.

“We will leave that until as late as possible, I would not think that any of them will train today (Thursday) and maybe not tomorrow and we will look at some alternatives, maybe a shape change.”

The boss also confirmed that on loan Middlesbrough left-back Jack Robinson would not be available for the trip to Edgeley Park.

He is expecting the player to be available for selection again from Monday when suspended midfielder Matt Worthington will be available.

The versatile Alex Bradley returned after illness to come off the substitutes’ bench for the 1-0 home win over FC Halifax Town last weekend.

There is no news on loan midfielder Lewis Simper who is yet to be seen in the team or on the bench as yet.

Darren Sarll has called for more from midfielder Tom Knowles despite the midfielder scoring a trademark winner in Yeovil Town‘s opening pre-season friendly.

The 22-year-old’s strike ten minutes in to the second half of the game at Stratford Town was enough to separate the sides.

Asked whether he was impressed with Knowles’ performance, the manager said: “I thought he scored a good goal, I thought he scored with the hardest chance of his game, but I was not particularly impressed with Tom.

“I thought he was in and out of the game, he struggled with his position, he struggled to find the chink in the amour of the opponent.

“He took his goal well and we know he has good quality like that, but if young players want to be top players the standard is ridiculously high and they have to set ridiculous standards to try and attain it.

“So Tom has got some work to do, but they all have.”

Yeovil Town midfielder Tom Knowles spoke to BBC Somerset following his brace in the 3-1 win over King’s Lynn Town, but insisted it was a return to winning ways after three consecutive defeats  that mattered more.

“It is always nice to get a goal, but the main thing is getting three points. It is why you play  football, to get three points and win games . It has been a tough spell and things like this do happen in football and it is all about how you bounce back. You have got to go on to the next one and we have been lucky this season that when it has been tough there is always another game right around the corner. It has not gone our way the past couple of games, we have been working hard and you can see today it has come off for us and we have got the three points.”

Knowles now seven goals for the Glovers since his arrival from Cambridge in December with  Saturday’s game marking his 30th game for Darren Sarll’s side.

Speaking about his goals, Knowles said: “The first one Reuben (Reid) and Josh (Neufville) set a really good press and I was just behind it and luckily they found me and not the defender and I went through and scored. The second one was something I like to do, get on the half turn and shoot from a little bit further out, I do like to score good goals, so two different goals but I was very happy with both of them.”

Turning his attention to Tuesday night’s home game with Maidenhead United with supporters back inside Huish Park, the attacker said he is looking forward to making his first appearance in front of the fans.

He said: “I have not been fortunate enough to play in front of them yet, but I can’t wait, I am really looking forward to playing in front of them on Tuesday… I have heard really good things (about the fans) talking to the lads. They can really get behind us and drive us on and hopefully we can reward them with another three points. Everything we do is for the fans because they pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us, so we need to put in the performances because that is what we get paid to do.”

Knowles added that he had loved his first season with the Glovers, but was excited at the prospect of what the club could achieve next year.

He added: “I am really looking forward to next season, we have got a good base and if we can finish this year strongly, who says we can’t get promoted next season? We are a big club, a big team and we all want to play League football, so that is definitely going to be the aim for next year.”
