Matt Worthington is sure that Yeovil will start getting wins soon after the Glovers were held to a 0-0 draw against Maidenhead.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins he said that a new manager with new ideas would start paying off soon.

“Hopefully everyone can see it was a big improvement from recent weeks, yeah, we are disappointed not to get the three points, but it’s an improved performance”

“Clean sheets always help, unfortunately we didn’t get one at the other end, but I’m sure that’ll come.”

Yeovil welcomed two new faces into the squad and Worthington was pleased with how Anthony Georgiou and Andrew Oluwabori got going on debut.

“I think the new additions, the wingers looked good coking on, (they) gave us some more attacking threat”

“I think they’re very direct, like to get balls in the box and it’s only a matter of time before we start scoring goals”

“…we know what the problem is, we need to score more goals, midfielders need to score more goals, strikers need to score more goals, but like I said, today was a much improved performance and hopefully going forward, we will get them”

Worthy also spoke about Mark Cooper, a manager he has worked with before, has begun his tenure as Glovers boss and he’s looking forward to seeing the improvements come.

“He’s got a very good footballing brain, you could see that from the first day he came in, the training sessions have been very good, very structured and we know what he wants and what he demands… performances will get better under him”

“Training has been really enjoyable, he wants us to start playing football, I think today you saw glimpses of us in possession but now we can just work on the final third”

Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Worthington says his side need to ‘up their game’ in the replay against Taunton on Tuesday after the Glovers were held to a 0-0 draw in the FA Cup.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins after the stalemate, he used a word we’ve banned on the Gloverscast, so we’ve used some asterisks…

“A replay on Tuesday is not ideal, I don’t think we hurt them enough today, it was difficult at times as they put a lot of bodies behind the ball and we had a lot of possession, we needed to open them up a bit more and drag them out a try to hurt them which we didn’t do.

“We’re very fr*str*t*d, but we can go and win the game on Tuesday.

“We started slow in the first 20 minutes… they had a couple of chances but we improved in the second bit of the first half, we had a lot of ball and I feel we should have capitalised, so yeah, very fr*str*t*d.”

“Us midfielders were getting the ball deep and us midfielders were struggling to break them down, but yeah… fr*str*t*ng”

Thankfully, that was the last of Matt’s use of ‘that’ word. He gave Taunton some credit, but admitted that the replay would require more from the squad.

“Fair play to them, they had a game plan of staying in the game as long as they could putting bodies behind the ball trying to make it as hard as possible for us as they could and they did that, so credit to them.

But we need to be better opening them up and scoring goals.”

“We need to up our game on Tuesday, 100%, it’s going to be a difficult game again at their place so, we need to be on it.”

Worthington said that he hoped the fitness of the Glovers would help with the quick turnaround and said how much he was enjoying playing with ‘freedom’ in this Chris Hargreaves side.

The Glovers will find out their potential first round opposition on Monday evening before heading across the county on Tuesday evening for the replay.

Yeovil Town’s longest current servant, Matt Worthington has extended his contract with the Glovers until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Worthington has made more than 125 appearances in the green and white of the Glovers including over 40 this season across all competitions – the most he’s managed in any single season.

Speaking to YTFC.net he, and manager Chris Hargreaves, said how delighted they were to get the deal done confirming thay the midfielder had other options.

Commenting after his stay was confirmed, the midfielder said; “I’m delighted to sign a new deal to stay at this club once again. 

“We’ve got a few weeks to go, but I’m already looking forward to getting back out there with the lads and doing all we can for the fans.” 

Manager Chris Hargreaves also added, “It’s brilliant that Matt has agreed to sign for us. He is a player I feel the fans identify to and relate with. 

“He had offers elsewhere, but it was Matt’s passion for the football club that drove this move, I’m really delighted he’ll be with us next season.”

Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Worthington has been named in the Vanarama National League Team of the Week for his performance in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Boreham Wood at Huish Park.

The 24-year-old played 89 minutes of the game which saw the Glovers come back from 2-0 down at half-time to earn a point.

He is joined in midfield by Notts County play-maker Callum Roberts, Daniel Powell of Barnet and Maidenhead United wideman Sam Barratt.

Well done, Worthy!

Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Worthington spoke to the BBC after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Wealdstone on Monday.

Despite the visitors having ten men for nearly an hour, Yeovil couldn’t find a winner, something which frustrated Worthington as much as supporters.

“It was a tough game, the sending off sent them down to ten men and they sat behind the ball and we found it hard to unlock them. I think we just missed that little bit of ability to unlock them and get the goal, so yeah, very frustrated.”

Worthington, who was returning after a four match suspension, admits the side should have found a way through.

“I still think we needed to be better at times. A couple times this season a team has gone down to ten men and we haven’t been good enough to unlock them, it’s something we have to work on.”

“We do press really well, we do with the ball up high, but we need to take more chances – we’re not happy with just a point we should have had more.”

There was concern for the Glovers lack of quality from set pieces but despite that and the result as a whole, there was praise for the attitude of the side, who continue to push despite the season drawing to a close.

“We are playing for personal pride as well as for the club, I know that whenever I get the chance to get on the pitch I’ll give it my all, and everyone else in there does.”

Worthington, who is by far and away the longest serving Yeovil player at the club confirmed that there had been discussions regarding his future after Chairman Scott Priestnall said last week he had begun offering contracts to players.

“I’ve loved being here, I’ve loved the amount of games I’ve played and I really enjoy the place and I’m happy. There’s been (contract) discussions, but I’m just concentrating on the pitch for the last few games and then whatever will be will be.”

Que sera, sera, for Worthy as the season comes to an end.

The FA have confirmed the four match suspension of midfielder Matt Worthington following his red card at King’s Lynn Town on Saturday.

It has been listed as ‘Serious Foul Play’.

The reason for the additional match ban on top of the usual three is that this represents the midfielder’s second dismissal of the season, the other being on the opening day against… King’s Lynn.

After the game, Charlie Lee suggested an appeal may be on the cards saying: “ I think everyone (thought it was not a red card), I spoke to their bench and you understand their reaction, it was one of those tackles, I think everyone saw he won the ball.

“I don’t know really what to say, it’s not a red card, everyone makes mistakes, we will look back at it and I’ll have to see the video, my first thought is that it’s a great tackle.”

As it stands, Worthington is set to miss games against Aldershot Town on the Good Friday, the derby at W*ymouth on Easter Monday and then the matches with promotion-chasing Stockport County and FC Halifax Town.

He would be available for the home game against Wealdstone on May 2nd.

Matt Worthington said his Yeovil Town team-mates need to be more clinical after missing a number of good opportunities to pull further ahead before going down to a 2-1 defeat against Wrexham.

The Glovers had good opportunities following the opening goal from Tom Knowles which the midfielder said could have seen them with a more comfortable lead than the 1-0 advantage they took in to half-time.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, he said: “We have to be more clinical and take those chances, we could have
been 3-0 up (at half-time) which is disappointing especially as we have come away with a loss.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose, but it’s back to how we like to play. We have to take the positives and move on to next week.”

The Glovers have managed five goals in their past six matches, which have all ended in defeats, with Reuben Reid the only recognised striker to find the net in that time with a consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat at Southend United.

Joe Quigley was the other striker to score in that run – in the 3-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup – but he departed for Chesterfield on Friday.

But, Worthington said the improved performance against Wrexham followed an intense week of training which the team would need to take in to next weekend’s trip to Woking.

He said: “Today has put us in good stead for next weekend, we got back to basics this week and the gaffer has put us through our paces. That showed today, so we have to take the positives and get back to Saturday.“

There’s a double reason to celebrate at Huish Park this week with both Matt Worthington and Darren Sarll picking up awards and recognition.

Midfielder, Worthington has been singled out for praise by his manager on more than one recent occasion and it seems others are starting to notice.

The former Bournemouth man made both the Non-League paper and the official Vanarama Team of the Day for his part in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Barnet.

As for the gaffer, he’s been rewarded as the National League’s Manager of the Month for guiding his side through three incredible away wins at Dagenham, Bromley and Wrexham and remaining unbeaten through FA Cup and Somerset Premier Cup ties too.

The official press release stated;
“Yeovil Town weren’t slow to start brewing this season but their cup ran cold just a few days into September.

Darren Sarll never allowed some sticky results to distract from the bigger picture – and his team really started to get going again last month.

They begun November with a 5-0 FA Cup romp at Yate Town before points were earned with wins over Eastleigh, Dagenham, Bromley and Wrexham.

They may not have been able to polish off winless Dover Athletic but the Glovers fans and the Manager of the Month have their eyes firmly fixed on the top seven now.”

Yeovil Town midfielder Matt Worthington spoke to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 1-0 win over Barnet on Saturday.

Following praise from his manager both before and after the game, the former Bournemouth man was in great spirits at both the team’s form and his own contribution.

Worthington has started ten out of the eleven matches which make up the unbeaten run with the only exception being the Somerset Premier Cup victory at Larkhall Athletic.

“I am enjoying it, liking getting in the box and making some chances and we have a really good balance in there with (Josh) Staunton and (Dale) Gorman.
“Staunts settles the ship and feeds me and Gorman and we try and feed the strikers, so it is a good balance.

“In front of home fans, they come out and support us, the three points is important and a clean sheet is massive as well, the back four were brilliant again today.

“We are looking up (the table) but we are staying level-headed, we know we have to come in next week, keep putting the hard work in and keep ticking off the games and getting the points on the board.
“Cup competitions and runs are great, but we just want to keep winning so we’ll just be looking to get another result next time out.”

He suggested that he was looking forward to the FA Cup tie against his former club, Bournemouth but reiterated that it was a case of ‘one game at a time’ for the in form Glovers.

Matt Worthington is targeting adding more goals to his game after finding the net for the first time in the recent FA Cup replaywin at W*ymouth.

The 23-year-old header in the derby was his first goal since January 2020 when he scored in a 2-2 draw with Colchester United during the club’s first season back in the non-League.

He told the Gloverscast’s Ben Barrett that manager Darren Sarll had challenged him to add more goals from midfield having signed a new contract in the summer.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s trip to Yate Town in the FA Cup first round he said: “The manager and I had a lot of conversation of what he wanted from me, he wants me to add more goals which I want to do and take on a more leadership role to my game.

“I was delighted to sign, I wanted to get that sorted and at the moment I am enjoying my football and hopefully there are many more good performances to come.”

Having recently passed a century of appearances for the club, Worthington is the most experienced players in the squad in green-and-white.

He added: “There’s a bit more (of a need to take on more) seniority this year, but the new lads have come in and done really well.

“I am still only 23 myself but with the experience of games I have had I think I can help some of the young lads on their way.”
