Former Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley has spoken as a Chesterfield player for the first time confirming that promotion was the aim for league leaders, but also that the deal taking him from Huish Park to the Technique Arena had been ongoing for a little while.

Speaking to Chesterfield YouTube channel, in an interview recorded of Friday, he said:

“I spoke to the gaffer (James Rowe) a couple of days ago, and obviously I knew about it last week.

“So, it’s been a bit long trying to get it done, but now it’s done, I’m delighted to be here.”

The interview went on to speak about how much he was looking forward to playing for his new club and how he knew Jack Clarke from their time together at Yeovil last season.

Quigley missed the FA Trophy exit at the hands of lower league Needham Market due to “illness”.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll said not ten hours before Quigley’s move was announced that no offers had been accepted for any of the Glovers players during the month of January, so maybe the timelines don’t quite add up somewhere.

Following the 2-1 to Wrexham on SaturdaySarll said of the departing Quigley: “That’s the fourth forward I’ve sold (Hippolyte – Scunthorpe, Duffus – Morecambe and Lloyd – QPR) we obviously improve people, we try and improve people with our coaching but yeah, I’d have liked him today.”

Quigley scored 18 goals in 53 league appearances for the Glovers, including seven this season.

Yeovil will travel to Derbyshire to play Chesterfield on Saturday, February 26.

Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley has joined National League title-chasers Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old, who is joint top scorer with Adi Yussuf having found the net seven times this season, was one of only two players who was signed on a contract beyond the end of the season and therefore commanded a fee.

In a statement issued tonight, club chairman Scott Priestnall said the sale was necessary to “improve cash resources” due to lower attendances, pointing to speculation about the takeover of the club as the reason for dwindling numbers.

He said: “The decision to accept the offer for Joe is one that helps improve our cash resources at a time when our average attendances are much lower than expected and, as a result, we have a shortfall in our budget for the season.

“The ongoing speculation surrounding a takeover is certainly not helping the club recover from the lost revenues of playing behind closed doors and, with the exception of the Bournemouth game, attendances have not met pre-pandemic numbers.

The owner, who has only been seen once at Huish Park in recent months, said that no party was in a position to complete a takeover of the club.

Earlier this week, Julian Jenkins, the former Cardiff City director behind the Simul Sports Group, issued a statement to say his group was “in the final stages” of buying Yeovil Football & Athletic Club, which owns the football operations and Huish Park stadium.

Priestnall added: “I can tell you that no party up to this point has been in a position or is yet in a position to complete a takeover.

“Although discussions have continued, the club are looking at alternative sources of funding and investment. I shall update you further in due course.

In a statement on December 5, the owner said, in the event a buyer for the club was not found he would “go back to my plans for building a better Yeovil Town, utilising our infrastructure to be better on and off the field.

Asked about whether there had been any offers for players at his press conference today (Friday), manager Darren Sarll told confirmed that offers for his players had been received.

But asked whether they had been rejected, he said: “So far. It’s not been necessarily in January, we have it all through the year. The financial outlay in this division shocks me.” It appears the appetite to reject bids lasted less than 11 hours.

Earlier the boss had spoken about looking to build a strong foundation with the young players in his squad, which presumably included Quigley, not exactly a veteran at 25.

The manager said: “In an ideal world it would be great to start forging a foundation that sees a lot of these players have another year with us next year.

“That would be in my ideal world because the good work we are doing with them and the experience they are getting is unrivalled.

“These are the instances when we should be starting to think about building those foundations with these young players.

Quigley joined in October 2020 on a free transfer from Dagenham & Redbridge and scored 19 times in 61 appearances.

His last appearance came in the 2-1 defeat at Southend United having missed the FA Trophy exit to Needham Market due to illness.

His last goal came against AFC Bournemouth, the club he began his career with, in the FA Cup third round.

Joe Quigley has said he is hoping to be able to fight his way back in to the Yeovil Town starting line-up after making his return from more than a month out with injury.

The striker, who has six goals already this season, came on as a 57th minute replacement for Adi Yussuf in the 2-1 defeat at home to Torquay United, his first appearance since the end of November.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, Quigley said: “We had a good full week of training, the game being cancelled (against W*ymouth on Wednesday) gave me a chance to train the full week with the team.

“I felt sharp and I just have to keep building with that. It’s time to kick on both individually and as a team, we have got to improve.”

Manager Darren Sarll praised the impact the frontman had when he came on against Torquay, but said they did not use him well enough.

He said: “(Joe) looked very determined, we didn’t use him well enough. We are still trying to come to terms with Dillon (Barnes, the on-loan goalkeeper) distribution, so we didn’t use Joe as well as we could have done.

“Joe stood up the whole first half and I hate it when subs stand up in the dug-out, and you could tell he was desperate to get on the pitch.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll has backed his goalkeeper Grant Smith for criticising referee Scott Jackson‘s decision to red card Sonny Blu Lo-Everton in the Boxing Day defeat at Torquay United.

The dismissal after 64 minutes at Plainmoor has been overturned following an appeal meaning the on-loan Watford forward will be available for Sunday’s rematch with Gary Johnson’s side on Sunday.

But, Smith, who also saw red for “foul and abusive language” after the final whistle, is banned for the Gulls’ game and the FA Cup third round tie with AFC Bournemouth with Sarll looking to bring in a loan keeper for both matches.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, the manager said: “I don’t put too much blame on the referee, he went with his assistant he used his team in the same way I use Terry (Skiverton, assistant manager) when I am making decisions.

“He used his team and got it horrendously wrong and it cost us three points. The biggest disappointment I have with that is when you look at the subsequent dismissal of Grant Smith, he is probably right.

“If players perform badly in my dressing room they get told, all Grant Smith did was tell (the referee) he did not perform very well.

“Unfortunately because of the ego-centric behaviour, we lose a really important player in Grant Smith.”

Listeners of the Gloverscast podcast were the first to hear the news that Lo-Everton’s appeal had been successful – well, after followers of our Twitter and Facebook channels, of course. Having the only person in Britain who can make the FA’s website work (in Ben Barrett) paid dividends there.

The boss admitted the dismissal of Lo-Everton for dangling a foot at Torquay’s Tom Lapslie was petulant from the 19-year-old.

He said: “My disappointment was that Sonny was pivotal to our improvement in the opening stages of the second half and when he gave the referee a decision.

“It was petulance, people are like that in your 30s, it’s an emotional decision, nothing to do with your age. “

In other news at this week’s press conference, the manager said…..

  • His decision to look to bring a keeper in on loan for the next two fixtures was not a reflection on the ability of his back-up keeper Max Evans.
The manager said he was speaking with Premier League, Championship and League One clubs about getting in a stand-in stopper during Grant Smith’s absence.
Of Evans, he said: “You can do more harm than good with these young players when they are thrown in at thew wrong time.
“We had a plan for Max this year and we will stick to that plan, so we will look to add to the team with the loan market.
“That is no disrespect to Max, the plan for Max was to try and build him through a certain type of game and a certain type of experience.
Following our Gloversblog post weighing up the two options, supporters on our Twitter channel voted 73% in favour of giving Evans the gloves on Sunday.
  • Injury victims defender Mark Little and striker Joe Quigley could both be back involved in for the weekend – and if they’re not, they’re certain to be involved in next weekend’s FA Cup tie with AFC Bournemouth.

The manager said Quigley had only trained for “three or four days” but was looking “surprisingly strong” considering, and said Little was “very close” having picked up an injury in pre-season.
Sarll said: “That latest I would see Mark being involved is the FA Cup, so he could involved Sunday and Joe could be as well.
“Joe has had less time training but he’s been very strong, he looks like he’s in a race to get back.”

Yeovil Town are looking to bring in a new player ahead of tomorrow’s FA Trophy tie against Woking at Huish Park.

Manager Darren Sarll said the squad was “drastically short” this week with defender Morgan Williams going down with COVID-19 and youngster Ollie Haste away with the English Colleges’ FA squad.

However, he did reveal that left-back Jordan Barnett, who has missed the last two games through illness, returned to training this week along with long-term absentees defender Mark Little and midfielder Lawson D’Ath.

Of the planned signing, Sarll said: “We are looking to do a one-month loan for someone this week to help us out because we have been drastically short this week.

“We have only  had 10 or 11 training all week, so we are looking to try and (bring one player in) today (Friday) to help us along.

“At the moment there will be no additions in the near future and we are going to have to make sure we improve our current group.

“But how many players would get in to this group right now? Most people would play second fiddle to who is playing very well because every player is in great form.

“The only ones who aren’t are those who have not played minutes, so we are happy with what we have got.”

Updating on the longer term injury victims in his squad, the manager said:

  • Reuben Reid – is likely to feature against Woking although the boss said how long the striker played would be decided by “a conversation” between the two of them ahead of kick-off.
  • Joe Quigley – the club’s top-scorer is likely to be available from January onwards having been missing with a knee injury since the 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge last month.
  • Jack Robinson – the on-loan Middlesbrough defender is likely to be unavailable until later in January having suffered “some complications” with an ankle injury. The defender is scheduled to return to his parent club on January 10 – so it would appear an extension of his agreement is required if we were to see him again in a Yeovil shirt.
  • Mark Little – the experienced full-back returned to training this week having been missing since picking up an injury in pre-season.
  • Lawson D’Ath – the midfielder who was stretchered off on the final game of last season was also back in training this week.

Yeovil Town Manager Darren Sarll revealed on Friday that Glovers’ top scorer Joe Quigley is unlikely to be available for the next month.

Quigley hurt his knee in the final moments of Yeovil’s 1-0 win over Dagenham and was absent from the squad against Bromley.

Sarll told the media that his front man could miss the next five or six games.

“I don’t think Joe will be back with us before Christmas, it’s sad, disappointing for him, but his knee is not great at the moment.”

“He’s going to need a period of rehabilitation, we are still waiting on exact details, the estimates of what it is going to take him (to play again), but this is what happens when these players put their bodies on the line”

“Joe got this injury going into the corner with a couple of minutes to go at Dagenham, and what happens when the other team are desperate to get the ball back? You end up like a tree getting hacked away at”

“One little move and he’s opened his knee up, he’s in discomfort, he’s been in pain all week”

Sarll praised Quigley’s courage and ability but will now have a wait to see when his top scorer when will be available to him.

The striker has six goals to his name so far this season with five games to go until Christmas (potentially six if a replay is needed in the cup) it will fall to Adi Yussuf and a recovering Reuben Reid to lead the line.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll confirmed that Glovers’ top scorer Joe Quigley could be missing for a little while with a knee injury.

Speaking after the 2-1 win over Bromley, Sarll told BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, the front man has had a scan after picking up the injury late in the win over Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

“When he (Quigley) went into the corner on Saturday, late on to see the game out, he opened his knee up so we’re going to have to scan him.”

“We’re a little bit worried about that one, so I don’t think we will see him Saturday (vs Dover), poor Joe is not in a great frame of mind, so hopefully his scan comes back as good as it can be, but he’s in a lot of discomfort.”

Sarll also confirmed that captain Luke Wilkinson only made the squad at the last moment with the Glovers restricted to just four subs on the bench with Dale Gorman suspended, Toby Stephens out on loan and long term injuries to Reuben Reid and Mark Little not ready to return just yet.

Yeovil Town boss Darren Sarll believes top-scorer Joe Quigley is in “the form of his life” this season.

But, the manager said the six-goal striker is showing signs of fatigue having started the opening 12 matches of the season.

Quigley was dropped to the bench for the midweek win over Woking appearing as a 62nd-minute substitute for Adi Yussuf in the 2-0 win.

The manager said: “Joe’s ascent to where he is now is brilliant, but I can see a fatigue in Joe where he has had to carry his department in this team.

“He has had to lead the line and be the experienced head and I can see a fatigue I have never seen before.

“Saturday at Grimsby is the first time I have seen that. He has been fabulous, but he will need rest and recuperation like the rest of them will.

“I am telling him ‘you are my guy’ and you’ve got to play every minute of every game, and he’s now breaking down new walls in how to play more minutes.

The manager added that Quigley had scored more goals in green-and-white than for the rest of the clubs he has played for in his career – which is almost right.

Quigley has scored 24 goals for 12 different clubs before arriving at Yeovil, though he had two loans spells at both Gillingham and Woking, making it 14 spells at different clubs.

However, his 18 goals in his 51 appearances for Yeovil is the most goals he has scored for one club by a clear distance.

He did manage five goals in a nine-game loan spell at Woking in the 2015-16 season.

Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley has been speaking to be the press ahead of the Glovers’ game against Chesterfield.

Quigley has been in red hot form having scored five goals in the opening four games and has said that he’s been pleased with how he and side have bounced back after an opening day defeat to King’s Lynn.

“It’s been a good start, first four games and three good results, the first one was disappointing but we bounced back well…

“I think I’ve done well, obviously I’m five in four which you can’t complain about”

Quigley praised his teammates for helping in this rich vein of form, citiing a team high on confidence, players in form around him and an increased work ethic from the group throughout pre-season, but he also took time to recognise the work Manager Darren Sarll has done with the front man.

“The gaffer has a different wat of working with me to most others which has been very beneficial to me and to the team; if we can keep doing that we won’t go far wrong”

“We’ve got a good relationship, if you can match his work ethic then you’re not going to go too far wrong.”

Looking at the run of recent results, the forward said how the 3-0 win over Stockport was just another step along the road to proving this Yeovil team are a match for any side in the league.

“It was only a matter of time before it clicked going forward, we have been so good defensivley… it proves we can go toe to toe with anyone, as a group we don’t care what anyone spends, we know we can match them”

With five goals already on the chart for Quigley, he admitted he does have a target in mind… but that he’ll be keeping it to himself.

“There’s a figure in mind which I set at the start of the season, there’s bits on the way you can tick off, it’s been a good (goalscoring) start

“I’ll keep that (the target) to myself, but it’s on target… I’m happy with it”

Yeovil Town top scorer Joe Quigley has been named in the National League Team of the Week after scoring three times over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The frontman netted the only goal in a 2-1 defeat at home to King’s Lynn on Saturday, and then got both goals as the Glovers ran out 2-1 winners at Aldershot on Monday.

He is joined by ex-Glovers’ Kabongo Tshimanga and Tahvon Campbell who both also netted braces for Chesterfield and Woking respectively on Bank Holiday Monday.
