It’s Boxing Day, and Yeovil Town will fight it out with Truro City in Cornwall for the spoil of three points.

FORM…

YEOVIL TOWN

It’s been a good couple of weeks for the Glovers with three wins, a draw and a loss over the last five games. The performances have been strong, goals have been scored and there is a good feeling around Huish Park.

Last time out Yeovil were beat quite convincingly by second place Forest Green Rovers, 0-2, which to be honest was probably expected. It was a bit of a bump to reality but one that may have been needed to show just how far off the top teams we are. They do say you learn more in defeat and Billy Rowley certainly seemed to have learned a lot going by his post-match interview.

Little fact as well, the Glovers haven’t been beat since 2021 on Boxing Day, after a 0-3 loss to Torquay.

TRURO CITY

Life in the National League has been tough for Truro City with just the four wins since winning promotion from the National League South. It was always going to be tough for the newly-promoted side, but their fans would’ve have hoped for a couple more wins.

Over their last five games the Tinners have been far from great, with one win and four losses. That one win, was an impressive 2-0 win over Wealdstone, it was however their first three points in two months.

In their previous fixture, the Cornish side were beaten quite heavily 4-0 away at York City. That shouldn’t be a stick to beat them with though as not many teams have come away from Yorkshire with a point let alone three.

KEY PLAYERS…

YEOVIL TOWN – JAKE WANNELL

The centre back has probably come under more scrutiny than most this season. Although there have been some less than impressive performances, Wannell definitely brings a quality to the back line. Physically, the 31-year-old is imposing and he has the leadership qualities you want in your captain.

At the back he has been Mr Consistent only missing one game to date this season, and playing every minute bar 68 of them. Since Rowley has come in the defender has grown in confidence to that of his previous self and with key partnerships with both centre back partners, Morgan Williams (who misses Boxing Day through suspension) and Finn Cousin-Dawson, Wannell is a key to a strong defensive display.

TRURO CITY – LUKE JEPHCOTT

Jephcott has been the go to man for the Tinners when it comes to needing a goal. With three goals and three assists the ex-Plymouth man has seemed to found his scoring boots once again. It was during his time at Home Park, the striker made a name for himself with 33 league goals in 106 appearances.

Since leaving in 2023 he has a bounced around the leagues with his best goalscoring season being six last season whilst on loan at Truro.

THE GAFFER…

Lower league stalwart John Askey is the man in charge down in Cornwall after taking over at the Truro City Stadium in June 2024.

The 61-year-old started his managerial career as interim when taking over at Macclesfield Town in 2003. He was then demoted to assistant after Brian Horton became manager. Askey would then take a 10 year hiatus from first team management before being asked to take over the reign at Macclesfield once again. A position he held this time for five years.

He would then go onto manage Shrewsbury Town and Port Vale before taking backroom jobs as an advisor to the Macclesfield and York. He would then go on to take over at York in 2021 for 53 games. His next role was at Hartlepool where he boss for just 39 games before leaving.

Although amassing over 500 games as a manager, the Stoke man has only ever faced Yeovil twice, winning both games.

LAST TIME WE MET…

Who would forget the last we time we travelled to Truro it was in Gloucester. The Glovers would win the game 0-2 thanks to goals from Alex Fisher and Rhys Murphy. But it was most memorable for Yeovil clinching the National League South title. So hopefully more happy memories this Boxing Day.

DON’T I KNOW YOU…

There are a four familiar faces for Yeovil fans to look out for. Aidan Stone will be the most recognisable after he was the Glovers first choice goalkeeper last season. Stone would go on to make 32 appearances.

Shaun Donnellan, is another blast from the Glovers past. The centre back joined on loan in 2018 from West Brom, playing 15 times across all competitions.

Defender Ryan Law was at Huish Park in 2022/23 would make 11 appearances for Yeovil in the relegation season.

Zac Bell is the final face known to travelling supporters. The full back played for the Glovers in 2023 as another loanee, this time from Bristol City. Bell made 33 appearances in the National League South winning side.

Luke McCormick has been named your Man of the Match for the home defeat to Forest Green Rovers.

It was a closer than usual vote actually, with the top three players separated by just five votes.

Harvey Greenslade and Jed Ward – who also filled the podium when McCormick topped the charts against Hartlepool – make up the rest of the top three for this one, with half a dozen players or so recieving a handful of votes, Kyle Ferguson, who was named the sponsors Man of the Match came fourth.

The good people at Atrincham have confirmed to the Gloverscast, a concession is anyone 65 years old and over, as well as members of the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and NUS members – ID may be required.

Disabled Access includes entry via Gate 4 on Moss Lane and a carer goes free with a full paying ticket.

There is unreserved seating available to the Glovers fans next to the standing away terrace.

Boxing Day’s fixture with Truro City will be officiated by Ross Martin, the proud participant of one of our favourite images (below, hat tip to Gary Brown).

It’s the first time we’ve seen Mr Martin this season, he’s been chopping and changing between EFL and National League bookings, he has refereed one Truro match though, a 1-0 over Fulham U21s in the definitely serious and totally not silly National League Cup.

15 matches across all competitions have seen 58 yellows, 3 reds and 2 penalties awarded.

As for the Glovers, we have a great record when Martin takes charge, six games, five wins and a draw (2-2 vs Eastleigh on Boxing Day last year!)

He’s actually officiated our last two games on Boxing Day, the 4-1 home win against Taunton, then that Eastleigh draw.

At this point, we should have a card for him, he comes to see us on Boxing Day more often than some relatives!

Adam Wilson and James Hooper have festive flags, whilst Steven [seven] Swan[s – a – swmming] is handing out the mince pies in the dug outs.

Yeovil Town’s Boxing Day visit to Truro City has been designated an all-ticket affair with just 250 tickets available for the fixture.

The Cornish side announced on 23rd December that all seated tickets had sold out for the game and there were now just 250 tickets available in the entire stadium. You will need to buy a ticket for attending the fixture.

Defender Kyle Ferguson did not feel Yeovil Town showed enough of themselves in their 2-0 home defeat to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old, who was named the sponsors’ Man of the Match on a rain-soaked night at Huish Park, agreed with his manager Billy Rowley that the Glovers were not brave enough to take on the visitors who played the final 25 minutes with ten men.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah after the game, Ferguson said: “I don’t think we gave a good showing of ourselves and what we can do especially when you compare it with the last three games, but that is something that is going to happen, there is going to be bumps in the road. It is still a relatively new team, still teething really, but now we just need to bounce back in the next game.

“I think we could keep the ball a bit better, me included, be a bit more calm, be braver. The conditions were not great, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse because it is the same for both teams. Sometimes this happens and as players we just need to have to make sure it does not happen again next week.”

Yeovil fell behind after they were cut apart by Forest Green’s wide players and striker Temi Babalola slotted the opener after just quarter-of-an-hour, before an unfortunate own goal for goalkeeper Jed Ward on the hour mark sealed Rowley’s first defeat in charge.

The visitors had midfielder Harry Bunker dismissed for a second yellow card five minutes after extending their lead, but comfortably saw out the final minutes.

Ferguson added: “Everyone knew at half-time that we had not been good enough, the Gaffer came in and had words with us and that lit a fire under us, and we came out wanting to prove a point. Then they get the second goal and it is a lot harder, once they got a man sent off, I think we could have pushed a bit harder and kept the ball a bit better, but it was just one of those days, we could have played for ages and still struggled to score.”

The Scotsman has been an ever present since Rowley came in as manager having missed the previous two matches after an apparent fall out with the previous manager.

Asked about his return to the side, he said: “When the new Gaffer came in it was a clean slate for everybody which I was happy about because I had missed out previously, but that is football. I just kept my head down and kept working hard and then gone straight back to work to show what I can do and with a few games on the bounce now I am enjoying my football again.”

Yeovil now travel to bottom side Truro City, who had a long trip for a 4-0 defeat at York City on Saturday, before back-to-back league home games against Eastleigh on 30th December and Braintree Town on 3rd January.

Ferguson added: “It is a great chance to bounce back, we are lucky that the games at so close together because everybody just wants to play football when you have just lost. It is a quick turnaround because we can get back in and put things right.“
