It was a game that Yeovil Town couldn’t really win. A defeat at Yate Town on Saturday and the headlines would’ve been of the heroic giant-killers who’d felled their hapless higher division opponents.

A win and the story is about the plucky minnows who tried their hardest and did ever so well to get to the first round.

So, an emphatic victory, a clean sheet and a place in the draw for the second round will have to do it. Here’s David Coates‘ Five Conclusions from his trip to Lodge Road….

Let’s start with the most obvious thing; that was exactly the kind of ruthless and professional display we needed. An early goal (whoever it was ended up scoring it) silenced a home crowd which never really got the chance to show it if could be hostile or not, and then two more in quick succession kicked the stuffing out of tie. Yes, we were playing against a team of HGV drivers and probate lawyers, but how many times has an FA Cup shock been produced by such professions? No, postmen in the Yate side, mind you. But, we needed to put them to the sword in the first half and we did that. Darren Sarll asked for us to be “ruthless and professional”  before the match and he certainly got both those things.

When we signed up a kid who’d been released by Bromley and had a history of injuries, I have to say I was not feeling inspired about what he could bring. But, I think I may be falling a little in love with Charlie Wakefield – in the Gloverscast spirit of falling in love with footballers, I mean. That boy never seems to tire of picking up the ball and running at defenders, and I don’t just mean at Yate although he displayed all the athleticism his manager has spoken so much about. No, I saw this for Charlie (not sure I can bring myself call him ‘Chaz’) the first time I saw him at Aldershot and every time I have seen him, he’s impressed me.

That said, Matt Worthington is starting to look the part. Now whether him playing alongside his fellow flame-haired midfielder Dale Gorman gives the impression of there being two of him or not, I don’t know. But, yesterday Worthington looked composed on the ball, was bursting forward in a way I don’t recall seeing him doing so and even if he didn’t score (or did he?!), he impressed me in his 67 minutes. Yes, yes, part-time time, lower league, minnows opponents and blah, blah….. but this looked like the Matt Worthington we spoke about wanting to see more of in the summer and I am all for it.

For a club with one of the smallest squads in the division and injuries to a couple of key players, our substitutes’ bench looks decent. We were only able to name six of the allowed seven substitutes, but to be able to bring on Luke Wilkinson, Joe Quigley, Alex Bradley and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton is a good position to be in. It was good to see Morgan Williams back in action, he was not really too troubled by the Yate forward line in his time on the pitch, but did most things well and hopefully we’ll see more of him in the weeks to come.

Finally, £22,629 is not a myth. That is the prize money for winning a first round tie. The manager suggested before the match that the financial benefits of progressing in the FA Cup were “a bit of a myth” – and in the context he meant of seeing it in his playing budget, he’s probably quite right. But, add the prize money for a first round win together with the fourth qualifying round prize money and you’re already over £32,000, and that is before you add in half the gate receipts for those ties. Glenn Collis, the director we are led to believe is part of one of two consortiums looking to buy the club, was clearly visible at Lodge Road on Saturday – which is more than can be said for his AWOL fellow director, club chairman Scott Priestnall. There’s been a suggestion that progress in the FA Cup – and the lure of prize money and gate receipts that comes with it – has led to those in charge of the club to not make decisions in the past. Let’s hope it is a myth that the current custodians, who have always claimed to want what is best for our club, are not motivated by prize money.

Look, I managed all that without mentioning that we look great at the back (which we do, incidentally) or that we struggle to score which is probably difficult to back up after a 5-0 win.

Darren Sarll was happy with his Yeovil side’s ‘excellent’ performance as they sailed past Yate Town in FA Cup first round this afternoon.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sheridan Robins after the 5-0 win he praised the performance of his players and said he sees momentum  building in the team.

He said: “I thought their performance levels were very high, their training this week has been like a whole new level, really. We’re starting to find a little bit of momentum now and I thought some of the performances were excellent. I thought they dealt with the ball on quite a difficult pitch. We were very good, very good.

“The most important thing with this team, I keep saying it over and over again is, process, it’s progress, it’s time. And I just feel like we’re starting to really hit some form. When I was watching training this week I said to Terry (Skiverton), someone might get a bit of a slapping from us soon and today we started so fast, so athletically, so intense that would have been hard for a full time team to deal with.”

The Glovers started strongly in the first and second half and the manager indicated the quick openings are part of the plan.

“We’ve got a very small set of unique skills in our team and obviously the first one is athleticism. Some of them are very good athletically and we have to play at speed because they’re fast and there’s no point being fast and playing slowly.”

Match Report

Yeovil Town were ruthless as they saw off the potential banana skin in Yate Town in the FA Cup first round.

Goals from Dale Gorman Matt Worthington Jack Robinson, Charlie Wakefield, Dale Gorman, Adi Yussuf and substitute Sonny Blu Lo-Everton rounded off a professional afternoon in South Gloucestershire.

Here’s how Coatesie saw the game from behind the goal at Lodge Road…

First half

The only changes from last weekend’s goalless draw at Solihull Moors saw Morgan Williams replace the suspended Max Hunt in the centre of defence.

The ex-Coventry City man was making his first appearance since picking up an injury at the end of September against Bridgwater United in the Somerset Premier Cup.

Luke Wilkinson returned from injury to the bench as one of only six of the allowed seven substitutes.

We were told about the width of the pitch at Lodge Road and it was Charlie Wakefield and Dan Moss who enjoyed it the most in the early exchanges, causing all kinds of problems.

Tom Knowles smashed a shot over aided by the fingertips of Yate keeer Andy Hannah after six minutes, but it was a minute later that a low corner by Jordan Barnett found its way to the edge of the box where it was hit by Dale Gorman  whose low hit was deflected in off of Jack ROBINSON.

I thought it was Gorman, the club Twitter account gave it to Gorman, then Worthington, the radio gave it to Adi Yussuf. After the game the club tweeted that it was in fact, Jack Robinson who scored.

Four minutes later Wakefield was twisting, turning and finding space on the right of the box, but his shot was blocked.

On 15 minutes, WAKEFIELD made no mistake when he was found in space inside the box by a Barnett through-ball, he turned his marker before bending in a superb shot.

It has to be said Wakefield personified the athleticism which Darren Sarll has spoken so much about this season, admittedly against a part-time side, he was relentless.

Yate had barely had an attack in the opening exchanges and even though they saw a lot of the ball for the next ten minutes, they didn’t do too much to trouble the Yeovil defence.

It took until the half-hour mark for the Glovers to extend their lead. The marauding Worthington broke in to the box and was brought down.

Yussuf grabbed the ball, he wanted it, but GORMAN pulled rank and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-0. 12 yards is not really enough for tequila, is it?

The hosts’ top-scorer David Sims-Burgess broke the offside trap on 33 minutes, but smashed his shot high and not that handsome.

Three minutes later it was Knowles’ turn to beat the flag, he tried to draw the keeper but lifted his shot wide.

Five minutes from the break Yate thought they had got one back, but it was handled in to the net. Despite the protests of the home supporters, that’s not allowed.

If the team talk before the match was to not allow their hosts to get their tails up, the briefing at the break must have been similar and Yeovil again did not disappoint.

Seconds in to the second half good link up between Knowles and Wakefield led to the latter’s effort going just wide, and soon after Gorman warmed the keeper’s hands with a shot from the edge of the box. Where else?

But the fourth goal came three minutes in to the second half, Josh Staunton did well to keep a high ball into the box alive, and his smashed pass across the face of goal came to YUSSUF was there to turn it home from close range.

It was another frustrating afternoon for Yussuf, he seemed to try to unsettle the hosts’ defence but never really did enough to threaten the goal. That said, he was confident enough to grab the ball when a penalty was awarded and he was in the right place at the right time with his goal.

If the game was not out of reach of the home side before that fourth, it was after it. Darren Sarll responded with his first batch of substitutions as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Luke Wilkinson replaced Williams and Jack Robinson on 52 minutes.

It took eight minutes for Sonny to make an impact. The same low corner routine that gave us the first goal got us the fifth on the hour. Gorman played it low in to LO-EVERTON who dropped a shoulder, turned into the box and bent in a nice shot in to the far corner.

You could almost hear our ball dropping in to the hat there and further changes saw Joe Quigley and Alex Bradley replace Yussuf and Worthington.

In terms of chances, that was pretty much that with the possible exception of Dan Moss’ effort over the bar after 71 minutes following good play by Wakefield, those two just never stopped.

The talk on the terraces turned to just how tall Yate substitute Joe Hall was (we’re talking Hugo Rodrigues stood in Miracle Gro tall) and, of course, who we’d all like in the next round.

There is a full compliment of youth teams representing the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust in Junior Premier League action this weekend.

The Trust’s sides from Under-11s through to Under-16s are all in action.

However, Yeovil Town Under-18s are without a match today after their South West Counties Youth League fixture at home to Bath City Under-18s was postponed.

Tickets are on sale for Yeovil Town’s trip to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, November 20 (3pm kick-off).

There will be no ticket sales on the day meaning all tickets must be bought online before the match.

The SD Samuels Stand at Victoria Road is part of the club’s move towards cashless ticketing arrangements.

Junior (10 -16 years-old): £12
Under-10: £2 – must be accompanied by an adult.

SD Samuels Stand is the Daggers’ newest, opened for 2009-2010, is all-seater and to be found at the west end of the stadium.

The stand holds 1,240 and is shared with home fans, with the hosts allocating blocks 1 to 3 (600 seats) as standard; and then expanding  if they consider away ticket sales could make that necessary.

Disabled Supporter Info:

There are 12 wheelchair spaces situated in front of the away stand. Wheelchair users pay the relevant ticket price but may have a carer accompanying free of charge if desired. There are four disabled adapted toilets around the stadium all fitted with radar locks. The stadium has 7 car parking spaces allocated to disabled supporters. For Yate Town, this weekend’s visit from Yeovil Town marks only the second time the club have reached the FA Cup’s first round proper.

They lost 3-0 at Cheltenham Town that time in 2012 having put then-Conference Premier leaders Newport County in the fourth qualifying round.

Yate head in the tie in decent form having won four or their last six including a 5-2 win over Steve ‘I Played At The Highest Level You Know?’ Claridge‘s Salisbury City on Tuesday night.

That means The Bluebells are nine unbeaten in their last Southern League Premier South and FA Cup matches, with their only recent decents coming when manager Paul Michael changed his side.

A much-changed side went out of the FA Trophy after a 2-0 at home to Willand Rovers last weekend when experienced former W*ymouth and Hereford United striker Stuart Fleetwood was sent off.

The other defeat saw them go down to a 2-1 defeat at home to Cirencester Town in the Southern League Challenge Cup at the start of the season.

There might be 38 places dividing the two sides, but the hosts do have a striker in form in the shape of David Sims-Burgess, a wills and probate consultant who lives five minutes from the ground, who has ten goals this season already.

There’s an HGV driver in the form of midfielder Sam Kamara as well, so the FA Cup stories just write themselves.

The game is a sell-out with 1,600 tickets sold with capacity reduced from the ground’s 2,000 official capacity to ensure safety.

There’s even a temporary stand been put up at Lodge Road to accommodate the bumper attendance.

FROM THE MANAGER

Speaking after the midweek win over Salisbury City, Yate Town manager Paul Michael described this weekend’s tie as “a free hit” for his in-form side.

Speaking of the Yeovil game, he said: “We look at every game and what the other team can do and see if we can tweak anything, but generally it is about us.

“We have not changed our shape in any game this season, we have played the same shape and played the same way and just tweaked little things depending on who we are playing against.

“If you take the two games out of it where I changed the team in the Challenge Cup and FA Trophy, that is nine unbeaten in the league and FA Cup, so we are on a great run.

“So what we have earned is to just have a free hit on Saturday and whatever happens will be.”

TEAM NEWS

Midfielder Andy Lewis is the only new injury doubt from Yate Town’s midweek 5-2 win over Salisbury City.

Boss Paul Michael said defender Will Tunnicliff, who went off in the victory on Tuesday night, “will be fine“.

The boss said the loss of Lewis was “a bit of a concern” with defender Nick Rhodes already missing, and added that former Dorchester Town striker Olly Mehew  was “touch and go” for the visit of the Glovers.

The manager said: “I would be massively surprised if he makes it, but fair play to him, he is doing everything he can.”

 

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS

Yate Town Director of Football Richard Thompson will be a man with a foot in both camps for this weekend’s FA Cup tie.

The striker played 36 times during two spells at Yeovil Town between 1989 and 1990 initially on loan from Torquay United before joining permanently following his release by the Gulls.

He left Huish in 1990 and went on to play around a number of other Westcountry non-League sides including a spell at Yate before returning as manager in 2000.

Thompson guided the club to two promotions during nine years at the club before going on to manage at Almondsbury Town and Mangotsfield United before returning to Lodge Road as Director of Football.

Welsh winger Howard Pritchard, who played more than 150 times for Bristol City, had a couple of seasons with Yeovil in the early 1990s before going on to join Yate in 1992.

But, a more recent connection is Rob Cousins, a cultured midfielder who was a key part of the club’s ICIS League-winning side under Graham Roberts in the mid-1990s.

He spent four years at Huish Park before going on to play for Forest Green Rovers and Tiverton Town, ending his career at Yate as both a player and manager.

Yeovil Town will need to be “ruthless” to avoid becoming the victims of an FA Cup giant-killing this weekend, according to manager Darren Sarll.

The Glovers travel to a Yate Town side who are 38 places below them in the football pyramid in ninth place in the Southern League Premier Division South for the first round proper this weekend.

The Bluebells have won four of their last six games including a 5-2 league win over Salisbury City in midweek and a 1-0 win over National League whipping boys Dover Athletic in the last round.

Sarll said: “Yate deserve a lot of credit for their progress through this competition.

“They are in a rich vein of form, you can’t deny momentum at whatever level and they have qualities and it will be very important that we share our qualities with everyone on Saturday.

“We have to ensure we are robust, professional and very committed and ensure we get the job done, it will be about being ruthless and professional.

“It may not be a wonderfully smooth display but on these sort of games it is important we get the job done.”

The manager was in attendance for Yate’s 5-2 win over Salisbury City on Tuesday night and said he had picked up a lot of tips from “good friends” he and assistant manager Terry Skiverton have with knowledge of their opponents.

He added: “It’s a really big pitch, it looked in good condition on Tuesday night and it will give us a chance to pass it and we will have to pass it.”

But, Sarll said the financial reward of making the second round of the competition would not be a factor for his players. The winners of Saturday’s tie will collect more than £22,000 in prize money.

The boss said: “The financial status is for the boardroom, that’s not for our changing room, so the most important thing is they focus on their current form.

“Working with this group of players it is more important to know we are doing okay and we need to keep improvement, but we are certainly not going backwards.“
