Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 164)

A first half double from Brett McGavin set Yeovil Town on the way to a 3-1 victory in an eventful game at fellow newly-promoted side Boston United.

The midfielder bent in a beautiful free-kick after just five minutes, before some sloppy defending allowed the home side to equalise. But, on 17 minutes, Boston were reduced to ten men with Jordan Richards seeing red after clattering Charlie Cooper.

McGavin got his second stroking the ball in from the edge of the box with seven minutes of the first half remaining.

But, Yeovil struggled to make their advantage pay and it was not until a great run and cross from Sam Pearson was turned in by substitute Jordan Young on 75 minutes that the three points looked safe.

Even then, Boston continued to press for another goal and Yeovil were reduced to ten men as Jake Wannell was sent off for a needless foul with five minutes remaining.

Here is how Dave saw it from his place in the away end at Pilgrim Way….

First half

After some cautious opening exchanges, it only took five minutes for Yeovil to take the lead. Aaron Jarvis was felled on the edge of the box by Boston’s Zak Mills. Up stepped Brett McGAVIN to bend one in to the top corner, watch that one on the highlights.

A moment of quality had given the visitors the lead but the mistakes in defence which had dogged them the past two matches were still there.

With ten minutes gone, Weston pounced on an error by Jake Wannell and striker Jacob Hazel powered towards goal before a good interception by Finn Cousin-Dawson denied him the opportunity to get a shot away.

But having been the saviour, Cousin-Dawson was the villain five minutes later as his error gifted Boston an equaliser. The centre-half completely missed a challenge on the speedy Weston who got away, squared it to Sam OSBORN who thumped it past Ollie Wright.

At that point, there was not much to separate the two sides but the game turned on 17 minute when Jordan Richards was sent-off after clattering Charlie Cooper.

From that point, Yeovil dominated the possession without carving out a clear-cut opportunity on the Boston goal. In fact, the next chance fell to the home side when Hazel thundered down the right wing and  got the ball in an Wright snatched it off the head of Osborn.

But, with 37 minutes gone, the pressure paid as a nicely-worked move saw McGavin pick out Raphael Araoye on the left side, he found McGAVIN just inside the box and he massaged the ball in to the net for his second. That proved to be Araoye’s last action as he went off with what looked like a knock to be replaced by Sam Pearson.

Second half

On 55 minutes, Charlie Cooper collided with  former Glovers’ loanee Martin Woods on the edge of the box, leaving the Boston man requiring treatment and the Yeovil man going in to the referee’s book, the resulting free-kick was deflected wide of goal.

But the home side had come out of the half-time break the brighter and, despite their numerical disadvantage, looked the more likely to create an opportunity.

The first opportunity took until the 64th minute to come. Nouble got away down the left and put a ball in to a box containing Aaron Jarvis, Josh Sims and Matt Worthington. None of them got a touch.

It took until the 75th minute to find a way through the hosts and it was a goal that was all about Sam Pearson. He got away down the left wing, powered in to the box and hooked a ball back to substitute Jordan YOUNG who turned in Yeovil’s third goal.

Yeovil Town celebrate Jordan Young putting them 3-1 ahead.

With the hosts visibly tiring, Nouble had a couple of breaks forward, the best of which saw him hammer a stinging shot against the palms of the keeper, it bounced out to Young who put it over the bar. Quite how that was not four, I do not know.

To their credit, Boston did not stop pushing for another goal and with five minutes of normal time remaining Jake Wannell picked up his second yellow card for pulling down Hazel. Such a needless booking and, with Morgan Williams and seemingly Araoye missing, leaves Yeovil very short of cover in the middle of defence.

Two minutes after the numerical disadvantage had been levelled, Wright pulled off a fine stop to deny Pilgrims’ substitute Aderoju.

With an even number of players on each side, Boston upped their pressure on the Yeovil box with substitute David Mooney a menace down the right side.

There were a number of moments which set pulse rates racing in the away end throughout eight minutes of stoppage time, but Yeovil went home with the three points.

Finn Cousin-Dawson is handed his first Yeovil Town start of the season as the Glovers take on Boston United this afternoon (3pm kick-off).

The centre-half replaces Morgan Williams who is missing for a minimum of seven days after suffering concussion in the 1-0 home defeat to Rochdale on Monday.

There is no place for injured left-back Alex Whittle, who has travelled to Lincolnshire, with on-loan Bristol City man, Raphael Araoye, starting.

The Glovers, who sent midfielder Dylan Morgan out on loan to National League South side Weston-super-Mare on Friday, name just six substitutes of the seven allowed.

Yeovil Town winger Dylan Morgan has joined National League South side Weston-super-Mare on a three month loan deal.

The 21-year-old, who arrived at Huish Park from Taunton Town in January, Morgan, has only made two appearances in the Glovers’ opening five National League Premier matches, having picked up a knee injury during pre-season.

Speaking about the signing on Friday, Weston boss Scott Bartlett said the arrival would fill a void in his squad left by an injury to midfielder James Waite.

He said: “I signed Dyl from Southampton to FGR when he was 15 so he is well known to me.

He has done brilliantly and earned promotion from this division last season. He can play anywhere across the front four and is powerful, can dribble and will make things happen. It’s an exciting signing and one that makes a lot of sense given the recent injury to James.

We are very fortunate to be able to have him in on loan and delighted to welcome him aboard.

He started the opening day defeat against Hartlepool United before being substituted after 56 minutes, and appeared as a 61st-minute substitute at Gateshead last weekend.

Weston already have goalkeeper Will Buse on loan from Yeovil and it seems likely Morgan will join him in the squad for tomorrow’s home match with Hornchurch.

All the best with the Seagulls Dylan!

Yeovil Town have been linked with a loan move for Cheltenham defender Tom Bradbury.

Jon Palmer, Cheltenham Town Journalist for Gloucester live has said on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) this afternoon that a move could be on the cards.

Bradbury has already played for the Glovers with 19 appearances in green and white in the 2019-20 season under Darren Sarll.

The defender, who went on to sign for Halifax after leaving Huish Park, has been out of favour with Cheltenham Town and minutes have been at a premium.

Mark Cooper has made no secret of his desire to add to the group and with Morgan Williams missing for at least the trip to Boston, Bradbury would offer defensive cover.

Jon Palmer, the journalist who broke the story has suggested it could be a loan deal for the 26 year old.

It’s worth noting that while the EFL has a transfer deadline in place for Midnight on Friday 30th August, this does not apply to the National League.

Tom Bailey is back with transfer round up of the National League, including Glovers corner…

Glovers’ Corner

Before we dive into the National League ins and outs, let’s look at the former Glovers that have moved about in the last couple of weeks. We may miss a few, so if any of you see any we may have missed, tag us on Facebook or Twitter (or X), or leave a comment below and we’ll add them in the next week’s round-up!

A few on the move this week, one player that has found themselves in limbo is Andros Townsend. The 33 year old, who made 10 league appearances for the Glovers in 2009, signed for Antalyaspor this week, however they’re under a transfer ban so are battling to confirm his arrival. A move is expected, even if he doesn’t get to play immediately… meanwhile, in the National League, Otis Khan has signed for Oldham Athletic this week, following his departure from Grimsby Town in the summer.

Sam Johnstone signs for Wolves in the Premier League from Crystal Palace in a £10million move, and finally, Callum Rowe (remember him?) has joined National League North side Radcliffe.

Yeovil Town new boy Josh Sims has said that his team-mates are working hard in training to eradicate the mistakes which have cost them in their last two matches.

The Glovers suffered a double defeat over the August Bank Holiday weekend, going down 3-1 at Gateshead last weekend and then losing to a late goal at home to Rochdale on Monday, with sloppy goals and a failure to be ruthless in front of goal a major factor in both results.

But, the winger, who joined a fortnight ago having been with Scottish Premiership side Ross County for the previous two seasons, said he did not believe the team was far away from turning performances in to results.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the trip to Boston United this weekend, he said: “It is a difficult league and it is so important to pick up results in your home matches. These games (like Rochdale at home) are the ones where you need to be picking up at least a draw if you want to do well because everyone can beat everyone. We were disappointed not to get three points, we never looked at it as a game we could afford to draw, it was three points dropped because we had some big chances where we should have been more ruthless.

It shows where we are as a side, the losses this season we could have won every one, because we have been conceding disappointing goals but we have been creating a lot of chances, we just have to put the ball in the net and stop giving away sloppy goals in the manner we have been. We are working on that in training and fingers cross we can put it right on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was born in Yeovil and grew up in Gillingham, across the Somerset-Dorset border, and recalled visiting Huish Park as a youngster during the period when the club was promoted to the Championship in 2013. He joined the Southampton youth set-up as a 14-year-old, eventually making his Premier League debut in November 2016, before having loan spells at Reading, Doncaster Rovers and a stint in Major League Soccer at New York Red Bulls, before being released in the summer of 2021 and joining Ross County.

As the father of two young sons, he admitted the lure of having his family close to home than the 600-mile journey to the Scottish Highlands was a bit part of the appeal, but said that his conversations were manager Mark Cooper were another factor in his decision to choose a move back to the South West.

He said: “I came down earlier in the week I signed and had a good chat with the manager, staff and the players and watched one of their training sessions. I was really impressed with what the manager (Mark Cooper) wants, the style he wants to play, and the standard. We have a good team and I think we can achieve good things at this level. The standard is much better than people imagine, there’s some very good players in this league and the football is not that different (to the Scottish Premiership). We play good football here at Yeovil and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to come here. The way I want to play football aligns with what the manager wants and that was a big part in why I came to Yeovil.

Sims added: “I left Ross County and came home and was weighing up my options, so I had a long break over the summer which meant I was not training and therefore I was quite far behind (the other players) when I signed. I didn’t have any pre-season minutes or training, so I have been thrown in at the deep end, but the only way to get match fit is to play games. The manager is aware of that and has said ‘we are not going to chuck you in for 90 minutes straight away’, so I am still not 100% match fit and it is only going to get better by playing games. I know Michael Smith from playing against him in Scotland, Matt Worthington from youth football, so I know some faces and the boys have been brilliantly with me.”

Having made his debut with a brief cameo in the second half of the 1-0 win at Braintree Town in the second match of the season, he has started all Yeovil’s following three matches with the 64 minutes he had on the pitch against Rochdale on Monday being his longest outing since joining.

Asked about what he hoped to bring to the side, he added: “I am not a physically big player, so I want the ball at my feet and be able to pass, move and create chances that way with my agility and speed. The manager explained to me the role he sees me playing in the team and it is one I enjoy doing, so it worked out well. Location-wise it worked for me with having family in the area, when you are moving from the top of Scotland, back here was a big factor. But what the manager wants to do on the football side was also a massive factor.
