Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 127)

Well it wasn’t the afternoon Yeovil would’ve wanted, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Gateshead. Let’s see how the rest of the league fared, and where it leaves Yeovil.

Before we look at the rest of Saturday’s fixture, we’re stepping back in time to Friday night, as Dagenham & Redbridge and FC Halifax Town played out a 1-1 draw under the lights. Josh Rees gave the hosts a first half lead, before former Glover Andrew Oluwabori equalised for Halifax late on to share the points.

Onto Saturday, and we begin in Aldershot, as they comprehensively beat Oldham Athletic 4-1, a double from summer signing James Henry getting proceedings underway. Ebbsfleet United’s woeful start to the season continued as they were battered at home by Woking, as new signing Matt Ward marked his debut with the final goal in a 3-0 win.

There was an enthralling encounter at Gander Green Lane between Sutton United and York City, as both teams took a lead before settling for a point apiece in a 2-2 draw, Will Davies equalising for the hosts against his former employers. It was a good day at The Hive for Barnet as they made it two home wins from two with their 2-1 victory over Southend United, with credit going to the away fans who outnumbered Barnet in their own ground.

There were three 1-1 draws, all with a level of drama! Hartlepool United needed a 98th minute equaliser from Mani Dieseruvwe to preserve their unbeaten start at home against Wealdstone, while Tamworth needed a 94th minute equaliser from summer signing Chris Wreh in the clash between the two promoted sides from the National League North. In the third draw, Braintree Town continued to grow in stature in the division as they took a credible point home from Solihull Moors, an 81st minute equaliser from new signing Brad Stevenson saving the Moors from another disappointing result.

Eastleigh continue with their 100% record to start the campaign, as they registered a slender 1-0 win courtesy of a Chris Maguire penalty away at Altrincham. Finally, there were two 0-0 draws, as Monday’s visitors Rochdale drew at home to Forest Green Rovers, while AFC Fylde shared the spoils with Maidenhead United, the Magpies getting their first point of the season.

National League results – in full

National League table

Yeovil Town boss Mark Cooper said three “soft goals” cost his side as they went down to a 3-1 defeat at Gateshead on Saturday.

The Glovers found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes through an own goal from defender Jordan Thomas followed quickly by another from hosts’ full-back Brandon Haunstrup, who was on trial at Huish Park this summer.

Striker Aaron Jarvis pulled one back on the half-hour mark and the visitors’ almost levelled when Morgan Williams’ header came back off the post, but they got not find another breakthrough.

Speaking to our man Ben Barrett after the game, Cooper said: “I didn’t think we deserved to lose the game, I thought we were well in it and we deserved at least a point- but, to do that, you have to have more big moments than they do.

I thought it was a good game of football, we conceded some really soft goals. The first one we didn’t stay with the runner, the ball is going wide and we put it in our own goal, then the second we gave the ball away in our own area and after that we are in the game. We score a goal, hit the post through Morgan Williams and we think the ball goes in and we have loads of play around their penalty area, but we did not produce enough quality to get that equaliser.”

He added: “I thought we started brilliantly, Sam Pearson got in the box and should score, and for those first five or ten minutes we were really good but their goal changes things. Then we go 2-0 down and you have to roll the dice and I thought we did that and we were well in the game right until the end.

But, we gave them three goals today and they do not need any help because they are a very good team. I thought we matched them today and I think Rob (Elliot, the Gateshead manager) will say it was an even game of football.

The boss said his players believed Williams’ header towards the end of the first half crossed the line, but in the absence of goal line technology in the National League, we will never know.

Cooper voiced his frustration at referee Martin Woods who gave the home side a late penalty for a pull on substitute Mark Beck, but waved away an appeal from the visitors’ Frank Nouble for a similar incident.

The Glovers’ boss said: “The referee was so inconsistent, it is not often you will see a referee get booed off by the home crowd after they have won 3-1. If he gives the penalty to them at the end, he has to give the one for a double on Frank Nouble, it is the same type of foul.

It seemed to be whoever shouted the loudest won the fouls, I would rather they were really good or really crap, not inconsistent. I can live with them being crap because we all have a bad day, but he was just inconsistent.”

Following the loss, Yeovil make the six-hour return journey south and prepare to face Rochdale at Huish Park on Bank Holiday Monday. The Greater Manchester side were held to a goalless draw at home to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, a match watched by Cooper on the return journey.

The boss said: “We will try and watch it on our way home, we have watched some of their games already, so we will look at how they set up. We have limited time to prepare, so we can’t waste any time.

Yeovil Town fell to a 3-1 defeat on the road at Gateshead this afternoon. The first half was a great game for the neutrals, with both sides playing some nice stuff going forward with a side of terrible defending.

An own goal by Jordan Thomas was added to by former Yeovil trialist Brandon Haunstrup inside 22 minutes before Aaron Jarvis got one back.

Mark Cooper’s side gave as good as they got against the league leaders, but a late penalty from Luke Hannant saw it finish 3-1.

First half

Yeovil had Gateshead chasing back in the 3rd minute.  Sam Pearson was played through on the left hand side of the Gateshead defence and he chose to cut it back rather than get it across the six yard box.

Moments later, Aaron Jarvis had a sighter from distance that skipped past the post of Tiernan Brooks.

Both sides exchanged possession in the early stages and in the 12th minute, Jacob Butterfield’s left footed strike was diverted in by Jordan Thomas. A spell of possession led to a cross in the box that came in too easily and wasn’t cleared away. 0-1

Yeovil tried to hit back and cross into the box found Jarvis who rose highest to head towards goal but his effort was comfortable for the keeper.

Ollie Wright was called into action in the 17th minute after the Oseni pounced on the Glovers as they tried to play out. The loanee got down low to deny the Gateshead striker.

Calamitous defending from Yeovil allowed former triallist Brandon Haunstrup to double Gateshead’s lead. A sloppy pass from Worthington didn’t quite make its way to Michael Smith and Haunstrup pounced to fire into the roof of the net. 0-2

The Glovers should have got one back in the 24th minute through Matt Worthington. A ball over the top caught Gateshead napping and Worthington found himself face to face with Brook in goal. The midfielder could only fire straight at the man in purple.

A few minutes later Aaron Jarvis got his goal. A great cross from Michael Smith found Yeovil’s number 9 on the spot and his powerful header couldn’t be kept out despite Brooks’ best efforts. 1-2

Jarvis nearly levelled the score with the next attack. Another cross in from the right caused Gateshead all sorts of problems but Jarvis could only strike high and wide.

Yeovil switched to the familiar back four and started to get more joy. Morgan Williams came within the width of the post to drawing Yeovil back level.

Gateshead thought they’d scored their third moments later after Louis Storey’s header across the box was nodded in by Oseni. On this occasion the assistant’s flag saved the Glovers.

Half time: Gateshead 2 Yeovil Town 1

Second half

Mark Cooper made a half time change with Frank Nouble replacing goalscorer Aaron Jarvis.

Harvey Greenslade snuck in past Louis Storey on the 52nd minute and struck a good effort at goal and earned a corner for his efforts.

Butterfield came close to getting his 2nd of the afternoon moments later, drawing a save from Ollie Wright who clawed it out low to his right.

Gateshead maintained the pressure and whipped strike from Hannant went over Wright’s bar.

On the hour Yeovil Town made a triple substitution with Charlie Cooper, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Dylan Morgan coming on for Greenslade, McGavin and Sims.

Morgan nearly made an instant impact. sloppy play from Gateshead allowed Nouble and Morgan to link up and Morgan’s effort was blocked by a sliding Heed defender.

Gateshead made some changes of their own with former Glover Mark Beck entering the fray. But it was his teammate, Kain Adom who’s shot was deflected wide with Wright at full stretch.

The second half never quite lived up to the first, with neither side able to get their passing game flowing and plenty of substitutions disrupting the flow.

The Glovers conceded an 87th minute penalty after a shirt pull on Mark Beck. Luke Hannant coolly despatched past Wright. 1-3

Gateshead could have scored a fourth in stoppage time but Adom’s effort was skied over.

Yeovil Town have ranked 111th in the country in the Fair Game Index 2024.

The report which is ‘based on extensive research’ ranks every all of the clubs from the Premier League to National League North/South.

Each club is scored out of 100, with 40 marks coming from financial sustainability, 30 from good governance, 20 from equality and ethical standards and 10 from fan and community engagement.

For Financial Sustainability, the Yeovil scored 9.1 out of 30. For Governance the club scored highest in NLS with a score of 9.8 out of 30. On quality and ethical standers Yeovil scored 3.6 out of 20 and on fan and community engagment was 2 out of 10.

A final score of 24.5 out of 100 ranked Yeovil 111th in the country.

Tonbridge Angels topped the charts in National League South and York City topped the National League…

Financial Sustainability includes 38 touchpoints and includes measures such as accounting, debt, ticket pricing and sponsorship.

Good Governance draws on 55 different metrics and covers areas such as board structure, accountability and transparency.

Equality and ethical standards has the most touchpoints – 106 – and covers a very broad range of topics from ethics to sexism, and from environmental impact to racism.

Fan and Community Engagement has 30 touchpoints, including fan representation and community investment.

Niall Couper, the CEO of Fair Game said: “Football is far from perfect but with the likelihood of an incoming football regulator there is a real chance to change it for the better.

“To deliver real and meaningful change we need to understand the problems. We’ve designed the Fair Game Index to do exactly that and help reshape the game we love.

“It is the most comprehensive analysis yet of what it means to be a well-run club, and we’re calling on the authorities, the Football Regulator and football’s governing bodies to work with us.”

Saturday sees Yeovil Town play their second of three games in six days as they make the long trip north to Gateshead in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday.

Form Guide…

Both sides have found their feet early on in the season, with Gateshead in second place in the National League Premier table and the Glovers in eighth.

The Tynesiders haven’t lost yet winning twice and drawing once with their most recent result being a 1-1 draw at FC Halifax Town on Tuesday night.

The big news of the Heed’s season has been the loss of two key players to injury with captain Greg Olley suffering a horrific leg break in their second match at Woking a week ago, and defender Joe Grayson, who injured his knee in their opening game of the season, a 5-1 home win over Ebbsfleet United.

The Glovers have been in good form as well after a spirited loss on the opening day they bagged six points from the last two games. The Somerset side dug in on Tuesday night to win 3-2 against Ebbsfleet United.

Key Players…

Brett McGavin

Captain Matt Worthington was our pick for key player for Tuesday night’s fixture at home to Ebbsfleet and for this game I want to look his midfield partner in Brett McGavin.

Brett McGavin salutes the Thatchers Stand after scoring v Ebbsfleet

McGavin joined in the summer after leaving Torquay United. He has since proven a valuable asset, playing 70 minutes or more in all three games so far this season. He also contributed in Tuesday nights game with a goal that saw the Glovers go 1-0 up.

Regan Booty

Booty has so far been the stand out player for Gateshead. The central midfielder has got four assists in three games so will be crucial to the home side in the final third.

His battle with Worthington/McGavin will be interesting as whoever has the task of marking him will have there work cut out. Whoever wins this battle I feel will win the game.

 That’s what he said…

Glovers manager Mark Cooper had only positives to say about Saturday’s opponents when speaking to the media ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekend. He said: “They’re the most pure football team in the league, in terms of the way they play. They’re really easy on the eye…they really test you and ask you questions.”

Cooper has mixed feelings to playing Gateshead away with a game on Monday as well.

We’re going when the weather’s decent and it’s not freezing cold, it is a write off of two days however due to the travel.

The love-in between these two sides was reciprocated by Gateshead manager Rob Elliot who said he expects Yeovil to be the strongest of any of the teams promoted last season.,

He said: “They have a very experienced manager, experienced players, they have a good system and a really good shape, they are really solid and can dominate the ball, but they are also very compact in the way they hold the mid-block.

They have a lot of threats, big Nouble up front, a big personality and a big player, so we expect this to be our toughest test of the season. We have to make sure we are ready for it and make sure we attack the game and do not fall in to being passive because if we just pass it around without intent, you can find it really hard to gain momentum.

We’ve met before…

There has been three meetings between these two sides, with Yeovil leading the head-to-head with two wins to Gateshead’s one.

The last time they met was in the F.A Cup last year when the Glovers ran out 3-1 winners, with goals coming from Rhys Murphy, Jake Stevens and an own goal from Joe Grayson.

Don’t I know you…

Mark Beck. Remember that name, if you don’t I can’t blame you, his time at Yeovil wasn’t memorable (sorry Mark).

Joining in 2015, the Scottish striker made nine appearances for a Paul Sturrock side scoring no goals and getting just the one assist. He was soon loaned out to a then non-Hollywood Wrexham team.

There’s also Brandon Haunstrup who possibly makes this list having had a complete of substitute appearances at left-back for Mark Cooper’s side in pre-season this summer. He did not make the grade at Huish Park, but has got a deal on Tyneside, where he had a brief spell on loan last season whilst a Cambridge United player.

Who’s been naughty then…

Neither Yeovil or Gateshead have anyone suspended for the game.

SUPPORT THE GLOVERSCAST

The Gloverscast is a volunteer run website which costs money to maintain. If ever you feel like supporting with our running costs, which include our website hosting, Zoom subscription, The Daily Glove, we’d be extremely grateful for your donations.

It was an entertaining Tuesday night at Huish Park and Jonathan Hooper has delivered us with yet another stat pack to chew over.

We didn’t dominate possession

That stats show we were quite comfortable letting Ebbsfleet have the ball, especially in the first half. A lot of our chances came from ‘Fleet trying to play out from the back and us then catching them on the break. Over the course of the 90 minutes the visitors had 59% possession but did very little with it. Their xG was 0.44 and the two they did score were gifts.  You can see on the momentum chart, Yeovil were in total control until around the hour mark, where that crazy spell saw Ebbsfleet take control and level it up. Fleet switched to wing backs, and really isolated Raphael Araoye, who lost 10 of his 15 ground duels and conceded possession six times.  Sonny Blu Lo-Everton came into the game at left wing back in the 70th minute, to protect his teammate and nullify that threat which did halt that momentum.

We did dominate in attack

You can’t criticise the Glovers for not going for it. Yeovil had 14 shots at goal with 8 on target and an xG of 3.49. Mark Cousins goal was peppered with shots from inside the 18-yard-box and you can see from the average positions that the attacking midfielders had a lot more influence on the game. It was a similar pattern for Aaron Jarvis as on the opening day though. His one shot at goal was brilliantly saved – and led to Michael Smith scoring – but he didn’t get a lot of the ball. A lot of Jarvis’s work has been what he’s done off the ball, rather than on it, so far.

Brett McGavin Tuesdays

The centre midfielder enjoyed his night on Tuesday, bagging a wonderful goal from the edge of the box. McGavin had 46 touches of the ball, was accurate with 84% of 31 passes and made three key passes. What you get with McGavin is risk, however. He conceded possession 12 times against Braintree, 11 times against Ebbsfleet and 10 times against Hartlepool. Since the Hartlepool match, McGavin’s average position has been further forward than his partner, Matt Worthington, meaning he’s taking those risks in higher up the pitch rather than in his own half.
