Match Officials (Page 5)

Yeovil Town have never won a game in which Andrew Miller took charge – actually, we’ve not even so much as scored.

Now, as far as I can tell, none of those defeats are his fault, but we were looking for something to hold on to away at the League leaders and didn’t find what we wanted.

The last time we saw him was back in the 2021/22 season, a 2-0 away defeat to Grimsby where the hosts took the lead from the penalty spot and Dale Gorman got booked (shock!)

There was 2-0 win for Notts County the season before and a rather disappointing 3-0 loss to Harrogate the season before that. Myles Hyppolyte’s red card salting the wounds in North Yorkshire.

As for this season, in eight National League games, he’s dished out 32 yellow cards and one red, with York City’s tap-in merchant Ollie Pearce getting an early bath against Dagenham.

Five of those yellows have come in a Barnet game, their 2-0 home win over AFC Fylde saw a trio of Bees booked.

He’s also taken charge of some relatively high profile games in the Premier League 2 set up, including a Manchester derby and Liverpool U21s v their Man City counterparts, so clearly, he’s very highly thought of.

Mr Miller will be assisted by David Harrison and Stephen Brown, Jack Bloxham will patrol the dug outs.

Yeovil Town are back at Huish Park this Saturday and the good news is that our referee for the day already has the post code logged into his Sat-Nav.

William Davies will be the man in the middle this weekend, he took charge of the Glovers’ 3-1 win over Maidenhead United in October. (see pic below)

On that day, he gave yellow cards to both Aaron Jarvis and Dom Bernard.

So far, in 14 National League appointments, he’s dished out 41 of the yellow cards and just the one red card (Conor Wilkinson of Solihull if you’re wondering).

He was also in charge of Altrincham’s 2-0 win over Southend earlier in the season too, the only times he’s ever been referee for a Yeovil or Southend game are those two from this current campaign.

He will be assisted by Ciaran Barlow and James Tewson with Said Ouchene holding the fourth official’s board.

Yeovil Town will have a repeat referee in charge on Saturday, we’ve already seen Mr Callum Walchester once this season… actually, we’ve almost seen him twice.

Mr Walchester was the man in the middle for the Glovers’ 1-0 win over Braintree back on August 17th.

Morgan Williams bagged the only goal of the game, with Messrs Jarvis and Nouble bagging themselves a yellow card in the game.

He was also scheduled to be in charge for our 0-0 draw with Sutton United in September, but he was replaced late on by Paul Johnson.

That Braintree fixture represented his first game in the middle for the Glovers, and the record books show that he’s only refereed our opposition on one occasion too.

A 0-0 draw with Bromley in January 2024.

Overall this season, he’s officiated in seven National League games, dishing out 36 yellows and 1 red, but it is worth noting that 11 of those (…and the red) came in the same game, a feisty encounter between Braintree and Fylde.

Callum has been an assistant referee in a Wembley final in 2017 so has already clocked up a vast amount of experience on the National League circuit.

He will be assisted by Tim Walker and James Hurst, Tommy Breen is the fourth official.

We are in esteemed company this Tuesday evening… no not Tom Tonks and his long throw, but a proper, bonafide, EFL referee has been assigned to the clash between Yeovil and Tamworth.

Dale Baines is far more used to the glitz and glamour of League One, League Two and even the Johnstones Paint, Papa Johns, LDV Vans, Auto Windscreens, Vertu Motors Trophy.

In total, he’s taken charge of 25 games, given 86 people a yellow card, just the ONE red (and even that was a double yellow in a Premier League 2 game) and awarded five penalties.

Incredibly, for a ref that’s been on the circuit for a while, he’s never taken charge of either a Yeovil or a Tamworth game.

Adam Wilson and Jack Clench will be flag waving, Lewis Sandoe is bashing the board buttons on 4th official duties.

After what feels like an eternity, Yeovil are back at home this weekend and welcome struggling Wealdstone to Huish Park

The man in charge for the game is Isaac Searle, an official we have come across before.

This Saturday’s fixture actually represents his first game in charge at National League Premier level this season, he’s only been used in the South.

In 13 games, he’s dished out 63 yellows, a few reds and three penalties. Those penalties have all come in the past four games though.

We saw him just once last season, a 0-0 draw at home to Hampton and Richmond, in December.

We can find no record of his name even being mentioned in our match report on the day, which is usually a good thing even if he did show yellow cards to three Glovers.

Isaac will be assisted by Dean Treleavan and Stuart Kane, James Hooper is on fourth official duties.

Have a good one, gents.

For the second time this season, Yeovil Town will be officiated by James Bancroft.

Bancroft took charge of the bonkers game between the Glovers and AFC Fylde – a seven goal thriller that Yeovil came out on the right side of.

That actually represented Bancroft’s first ever game in charge of Yeovil – and he barely got a mention in our match report, which is normally a good thing.

Only Dom Bernard saw Yellow for the Greens on the day.

Overall, Mr Bancroft has been in charge of 10 games at this level so far this season, given 40 yellows, three reds and just the one penalty.

He’s NEVER refereed a Dagenham fixture.

A quick google of his name and we can’t even find much in the way of highly controversial stories surrounding him either; he did call off the Boxing Day clash between York and Oldham due to bad fog – but it was really foggy.

He will be assisted by Michael Chard, Alex Shipp and Harrison Blair will be on fourth official duties.

Here’s a picture of James Bancroft at Fylde… oh and some other people too.

Yeovil Town head to Spotland for Saturday’s clash with Rochdale and we’ve got a vastly experienced official in charge.

Scott Oldham gets the match referee duties for this game. (I have no idea if he’s any relation to James Oldham who did our game with Forest Green recently, and yes, I’ve checked, he’s refereed Oldham Athletic six times)

A full-time joiner and bathroom fitter, as well as being an EFL standard ref since 2017, he’s a busy chap.

This is actually his first game as a National League official this season, he’s been in the middle 20 times this season, all in Leagues One, Two or National Cup Competitions.

He’s ‘only’ given two red cards, two penalties … and 77 yellows, all season long.

Referee Scott Oldham

We have seen him before, albeit a while ago. He took charge of the last time Yeovil played a league game on a Friday night (prior to the Gateshead game) – a 1-0 defeat at Lincoln in March 2019 and a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup against Port Vale 18 months prior.

Being based in the North West – he was part of the Blackpool Football Association as an amateur – he has reffed Rochdale plenty of times, but again, not for a while.

A couple of years ago, he did a sit down interview with Sky Sports about his daily routine. Here it is, below.

Yeovil Town host Gateshead on Friday night and our referee for the game is officiating his first National League game of the season.

Ed Duckworth has been exclusively used in the EFL and Cup competitions this season but drops down to the 5th tier for the first time.

If you’re thinking ‘I’ve heard that name before’… you have, we’ve seen Mr Duckworth a few times over the recent years and not always fondly.

Most recently, he was in charge of the TV clash between Yeovil and Southend – you know, THAT one with Alex Fisher’s injury and goals for Murphy and Hyde before they joined us. Shudders.

But, he also sent Miguel Freckleton off for two bookings, the second of which was given for what can only be described as a really good recovering tackle.

Kick us when we’re down, why don’t you?

He also took charge of the 2-1 defeat to York City in North Yorkshire in February of the same season.

We’ve never won a game with Mr Duckworth in charge, whilst Gateshead have a record of four wins from six with him in the middle.

He will assisted by Alan Cresswell and Ravel Cheosiaua, with Lewis Sandoe on 4th Official duties.

Yeovil Town head to Ebbsfleet for a midweek clash and our referee for the game will be Rob Massey-Ellis.

Rob isn’t the only official in his own marriage, his wife to Sian Massey-Ellis who has officiated at a range of levels as both ref and assistant.

Anyway, the cover image we’ve used for this article comes from the Glovers’ home game with Aldershot Town earlier on this season where Mr Massey-Ellis was in charge.

That game ended 1-1, a fine strike from Ciaran McGuckin for the home side.

He booked six players that day, including three Yeovil players. Frank Nouble, Aaron Jarvis and Dom Bernard will hope not to hear the words ‘remember me?’ on Tuesday night.

I refer back to one part in the Gloverscast Match Report for the next observation;

“Referee Robert Massey-Ellis thinks it is neither a foul or a booking. “You don’t know what you’re doing,” says Huish Park, followed by less polite things.”

Oh.

Anyway, in three YTFC games officiated by Rob Massey-Ellis, we’ve won none, lost none, seen no red cards and no penalties for or against us.

Yeovil Town host Woking in National League action this Saturday, 11th January and a fairly familiar referee will take charge.

Paul Johnson was the man in the middle for the Glovers’ 0-0 draw with Sutton United earlier on this season and he will be again at the weekend.

In total, he dished out seven yellow cards on that day with Charlie Cooper, Dom Bernard, Morgan Williams and Alex Whittle all having their name taken.

Our Match Report does note late on that; “Ashley Nadesan goes in the referee’s book for a very (very!) late challenge on Alex Whittle right in front of the dug-outs. Whittle looks to land heavily on his shoulder and soon after he goes down inside the box for some treatment. Nadesan on the other hand is substituted with his manager maybe recognising his player may have been lucky to only given a yellow.”

It would be an injury that would keep Whittle out for a bit.

Since that game, Mr Johnson has officiated three other National League ties including a 6-0 thrashing for Solihull who gave Ebbsfleet a pasting in a game which saw two players sent off, including Solihull’s James Clarke after just six minutes – and they still went on to win 6-0!

In total, we’ve seen him three times as our ref; two draws and a 3-0 loss at home to Oldham in April 2023.
