Match Officials

We weren’t entire sure this match would happen at one point this season, but the Glovers are off to Morecambe on Saturday and the man in charge is Mr Declan Brown.

We’ve only seen him once before, at Huish Park back in April of this year when he took charge of a 1-1 draw against Forest Green Rovers.

He booked just one Glover – Frankie Terry – but dished out a few more to the visitors.

He also got a rather scathing name check in the post match chat, Manager Mark Cooper said…

But there is a cast iron penalty and red card in the second half where Ciaran McGuckin is about to tap the ball in and that is game over for me. I’m not blaming the referee, but they should not have a chance to get back at us in the last minute, it should have been game over. Between the four officials they have to see that, I think it was Ryan Inniss (the offender appears to be Tozer) who swipes McGuckin’s legs away when he is about to tap the ball in the goal. How four of them missed that I find incredible, but I do not want to take anything away from the players performance today.”

Inniss would go on to score an injury time equaliser to level the game at 1-1.

Brown has reffed six games in the National League this season with an average of three yellows per game, he took charge of Morecambe’s 2-0 home defeat to Woking in late August.

Brown will be assisted by Matthew Malton and Stephen Rushworth, Jacob Viera is in the dug outs.

A familiar face will take charge of the Glovers this weekend as we welcome Southend United to Huish Park.

Scott Jackson is predominantly an EFL official these days, taking charge of a dozen or so games above the National League level this campaign.

In 14 appearances this season, he’s dished out 48 yellows and two reds.

We’ve seen him a fair few times at Huish Park, in fact, this weekend’s game will take him to 10 Glovers games officiated in his career across league and National Cup – the joint most alongside Woking, Wealdstone and Maidenhead, but it’s actually slightly more than that, as he also took charge of the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup final win over Bath City a couple of years ago.

We last had Mr Jackson in charge back in the 2022/23 season, in a home 0-0 draw with Wealdstone, Owen Bevan was sent off on that day for a rather … robust… challenge, no real arguments from us.

However, roll back the calendar to Boxing Day of 2021, he took charge of a disastrous 3-0 defeat to Torquay United, he sent off Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and then, after the final whistle, also gave Grant Smith his marching orders, which would mean he would miss the New Years’ game against Torquay and, the FA Cup clash against Bournemouth – so basically, Jackson is at fault for the whole ‘Dillon Barnes thing’ (well, ok, not quite).

Beyond that, he was in charge when Rhys Murphy scored a hat-trick to put the claret and blue Seagull Botherers in their place earlier that season, and also when we won 3-1 in home ties against Barnet and Kings Lynn – overall, we have a rather good record in games that Mr Jackson has officiated.

Mr Jackson will be assisted by Ryan Saward and Ivan Stankovic with Neil Pratt marshalling the dugouts.

Yeovil Town head up the road to Scunthorpe this Saturday as will match official, Richard Aspinall.

If you’re thinking you’ve heard that name before, you’d be right. He refereed our recent match at Halifax Town.

On that day, he awarded the Glovers a penalty – cooly converted by Junior Morias, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts made a comeback in Richard Dryden’s first match in charge following the departure of Mark Cooper.

That was the first time Mr Aspinall had ever taken charge of a Yeovil fixture.

In total, he’s been man in the middle for four National League games, 17 yellow cards have been brandished, but no red ones.

William Davies is our referee this Saturday when Yeovil Town welcome Carlisle United to Huish Park.

Will refereed us twice last year, a 2-2 draw with Southend United and a 3-1 win over Maidenhead United.

Both games appear to have passed without so much as a grumble toward the officials, which is nice.

In fact, that 2-2 draw with the Shrimpers saw just one yellow card issued, although Mr Jarvis and Mr Bernard both had their names taken in that first fixture.

In fact, he’s one of the more lenient officials on the circuit, in 7 games this season across NL, EFL Trophy and Premier League 2, he’s just dipped into the pocket for the yellow 17 times, the red one came out for the first time this season on Tuesday, whatever Jack Fletcher did for Man Utd U21s in the seventh minute must have been worthy.

Ashley Allen and James Tewson have the flags in hand whilst Brandon Scaife is fourth official – he’ll be making sure suspended Mark Hughes doesn’t sneak into the dug out!

Jamie O’Connor is the lucky little so and so that gets to referee Yeovil Town’s trip to Rochdale this coming Saturday.

We’ve only had the pleasure of his company once in his career, a rather disastrous 1-1 draw against Halifax in 2022/23.

Both Lawson D’ath and Edwin Agbaje suffered season ending injuries, Matt Worthington picked up a suspension-confirming yellow card and only a scrappy Malachi Linton goal gave the Glovers anything to shout about.

He did book Halifax defender Jamie Stott for … “encouraging” Agbaje over the advertising hoardings.

He’s a very experienced referee and has been used far more in the EFL than the National League this season,

In 10 games this season, he’s dished out 27 yellows and two red cards.

He will be assisted by Zharir Mustafa and Martin Parker, Ben Robinson is the fourth official.

It’s cup time, everyone!

Yeovil Town will take on some old National League South adversaries in the form of those plastic pitchers, Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday and the man in charge definitely knows his way to the ground.

Richie Watkins is the man in the middle, he’s taken charge of seven Hemel games in his career – no side has seen him more!

He’s also been looking after games involving Yeovil twice in the past – both times saw the Glovers lose.

He took charge of a 1-0 home defeat to Bromley in 2022/23 and a 2-0 away defeat to Maidenhead United.

Below you can see him dealing with a minor skirmish in the Glovers’ penalty area – Grant Smith is about to get that Yellow card he’s holding.

This season, he’s been a little on the stricter side, four National League games have seen 25 yellow cards, and he got two of his three ones out in a tasty little game between Altrincham and Carlisle.

He will be assisted by Amarjit Sarao and Alex Rolfe with Dan England on fourth official duties.

The Glovers are back at Huish Park this Saturday with Boreham Wood the visitors to Somerset.

Our referee for this game is Mr Niall Smith, who we have seen before, but only a couple of times. Back in May he took charge of the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat away at Aldershot, taking the name of Harry Kite on that occasion.

Roll back to the National League South title winning season and he also oversaw the 1-0 victory over Taunton, a single Frank Nouble goal the difference with Jordan Young, Jake Wannell and Michael Smith all going in the book.

This season, he’s taken charge of three games at this level, yet to brandish a red card, but the yellow one has made an appearance or 15 – but that did include a rather spicy game between Altrincham and Aldershot which had eight.

Marcus Carmichael and Thomas Holden have flag duties as assistant, Said Ouchene is marshalling the dug outs.

David Rock will be the man in the middle when Yeovil Town head to Sutton United this coming Tuesday night.

It is Mr Rock’s first game refereeing in the National League this season, but by no means has he been twiddling his card loving thumbs, he’s taken charge of eight games so far, across the EFL Leagues and Cups.

Those first eight games have seen him brandish 36 yellows (that’s over 4 per game on average!) and a red one for good measure.

As for the Glovers, specifically, we’ve seen him three times, twice in the FA Cup including when he sent off Kevin Dawson (below), but most recently in the 1-0 defeat to Hartlepool on the opening day of last season, the one where we got “Darren Sarll’d”.

He booked five Poolies and two Glovers; Greenslade and Wannell and after the game, then Manager Mark Cooper said that Tom Parkes should have been sent off, for his seventh minute caution;

That was a horrendous tackle…If it had been 15 minutes later in the game, it would have been a straight red.

Having watched it back on HP Source, it’s certainly not a nice one… Jordan Young’s knee feels the full force.

Anyway, Mr Rock will be assisted by David Hutton and Alexander Shipp with Ayrton Hursey on 4th official duties.

Yeovil Town are back at Huish Park this Saturday and taking charge of the game will be Wayne Cartmel.

Cartmel is no stranger to the Home of football (in Somerset, at least), he was in charge for a disastrous 3-0 home defeat to Boston last season and took charge of a 1-0 home win over Dagenham here back in the 2022/23 season.

Cartmel, booked both Finn Cousin-Dawson and Jahmari Clarke (remember him) in that Boston defeat.

This season, he’s taken charge of just two National League games, a couple mid mannered affairs, but also reffed a spicy affair between Ipswich U21s and Derby U21s, seven goals and seven yellows.

Niall Felton and Adam Ricketts are his assistants and Jack Clench will be on fourth official duties.

It’s Wednesday night in Aldershot for the Glovers this week and we are being looked after on the night, by a referee more at home on the EFL circuit than in the National League.

Stephen Parkinson has been in Leagues One and Two as well as the EFL Trophy.

He officiated a feisty game between Bristol Rovers and Spurs’ kids, which ended with a lengthy penalty shootout, with a red card thrown in for good measure.

His only game in charge at our level though, was Carlisle United’s 3-0 win away at Wealdstone, where he dished out three yellows including to former Glover, Bevis Mugabi.

Oddly though, for a referee of his experience level, and considering he’s taken plenty of games involving South West sides, we can find no evidence of him ever taking charge of a Yeovil game.

Mr Parkinson has refereed in Germany before, having been a German language teacher in a former career.

Michael Hayden and Ciaran Fidler are going to be on assistant duties with Coleman O’Meara looking after the dugouts.
