Loan Watch (Page 5)

In what might be the final full Loan Watch round up of the season, there was play off heartbreak, a trophy and a couple goals for good measure.

Firstly, Jordan Maguire-Drew didn’t feature for Barnet as they were humbled in the National League Play Offs.

Bees’ manager said he was expecting a large overhaul of his squad for next season, at the time of writing it’s not known if they intend to take up their option on JMD.

Will Buse has been thanked for his time at Bath City after they conceded an incredibly late goal in their play off quarter final to Braintee.

Buse actually came close to scoring a late winner in the game from his own penalty area!

The former Bristol City man returns to Huish Park where he remains under contract for the 2024/25 season.

Onto Dorchester where Ollie Haste played an hour in their final game of the season, but post match was rewarded with the Supporters’ Player of the Season award.

Haste leaves the Glovers at the end of his contract with two National League appearances to his name and is – to the best of our knowledge – the youngest person to Captain the Men’s team in a first team fixture after skippering the side in the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup last season.

Benjani’s time at Yeovil also draws to a close, he’s been at Melksham for most of this season and spent the final day of their season on the bench. Benjani played in the final day game of thr 22/23 season away at Boreham Wood as well making plenty of friendly and SMPC appearances.

Shepton Mallet didn’t have a game this past weekend, but Charlie Bateson has one more engagement with them, the Les Phillips Cup final later in May.

Down at Gillingham, they’ve been going at three games a week for a while now and ad such there’s been plenty of game time for some of our Under 18s.

On Thursday just gone, Josh Haskett, Harry Lock and Harrison Foster started with Jack Bareham coming on from the bench. A good first half with Harry Lock assisting a Josh Haskett goal to make it 1-1 at half time. Bitton had the run of the second half to win 4-1.

Whilst on Saturday, Josh Haskett, Harry Lock, Harrison Foster and Jack Bareham all starting. It was a tough fixture for the end of the season and with injuries mounting for the Gills they went out 6-0 down.

hosh Haskett ended the season as joint top scorer for the Gills. All the Yeovil lads worked really hard for the team and are grateful to Gillingham for having them 👍

(Huge thanks to Ian Haskett for helping with Loan Watch throughout the season)

Jack Bareham (9) scores for Gillingham

Finally at Welton Rovers, it’s been a tough campaign, but it ended on a real high with Jacob Shore scoring a last minute equaliser in a 4-4 draw, a game which saw Max Dyer given Rovers Man of the Match after a goal and assist of his own.

Mason Alden was also involved and like the other lads have really appreciated Welton’s hospitality this season.

On the final day they lost to Saltash, but again plenty more game time for the young Glovers, and after the drama of a 4-4 draw with two YTFC-related scorers… we won’t worry too much about that one.

(Another huge Thank You to Daniel Shore for his help and information this season)

Finally, from Gloverscast Ben a huge Thank You to those who have read Loan Watch this season, I hope it’s been interesting to see how the first team lads – and maybe more so, the youngsters in the Under 18s – are getting on.

The Yeovil Town first team might be on the first flight out of Gatwick bound for Barcelona, but there are still some Glovers still with games to play.

In the National League – Jordan Maguire-Drew wasn’t involved in Barnet’s final league game, they beat relegated Kidderminster 4-1. They get their play-off campaign underway this coming week.

As do Bath City, they along with Will Buse will head to Braintree on Tuesday after finishing the regular season in 6th after a final day defeat to Aveley.

Dorchester had a double header of a week, beating Tiverton on Tuesday 2-0 (say that three times fast!) and then falling to defeat in their final away day of the season against Basingstoke.
Ollie Haste played in both, the latter result ended a wonderful run of results and ended their fairly slim chances of extending their season into the play offs.

Melksham lost 3-0 to Bristol Manor Farm on Saturday, Benjani was on the bench, information is light as to if he came on or not.

Shepton Mallet pulled off a wonderful 2-0 win over Falmouth on Saturday, the only team to beat the 2nd placed side home and away.

Charlie Bateson started and played an hour before coming off, he also played… and scored in midweek, in a 2-1 defeat.

There are few busier teams than Gillingham at the moment, a number of games last week and three more this week;

They lost 2-1 to Wincanton, drew 1-1 with AEK Bocko and were beaten comfortably by league winners Portishead with only 10men.

The numerous young Glovers; Harry Lock, Harrison Foster, Jack Bareham and Josh Haskett were involved throughout, with Lock scoring in the Wincanton game.

Welton Rovers got their first win since October with a 3-2 victory over Millbrook, Max Dyer, Jacob Shore and Mason Alden all playing in the game and getting a much deserved result.

The Glovers were picking up silverware at Huish Park, but a few other employees were out and about doing their thing too, here’s how they got on this week out on loan.

Barnet first and they confirmed a home Play Off semi final in the National League Premier with a 2-0 over Halifax (in Accrington), Jordan Maguire Drew was an unused sub.

Will Buse is making post season plans too with Bath – technically they’re not mathematically confirmed with a top seven finish, a point will do that on the final day – but they did beat Torquay 1-0 on Saturday… that’s a cleano!

Down at Dorchester, Ollie Haste helped his side come from behind to beat Hanwell 2-1 and in the process confirm their league status for next season too.

Melksham had a big week picking up six points from two games, Benjani Jr was involved in both match day squads, both occasions on the bench, but details are fairly limited as to whether or not he played much.

It was also a six point week for Shepton Mallet, Charlie Bateson starting both games but couldn’t add to his impressive goal tally

Charlie Bateson in action for Shepton Mallet

If you want goals, you want Gillingham matches.

Four young Glovers; Harrison Foster, Jack Bareham, Harry Lock and Josh Haskett started both games for the Gills this week, Haskett scored a couple and Foster got one in a 5-3 defeat to Wells in midweek, on Saturday, Haskett bagged again, but a second half Hallen FC turnaround saw them win 7-2.

Welton Rovers have had a busy week;

On Tuesday they drew 0-0 with Nailsea and Tickenham, on Thursday they drew 3-3 with Oldland and on Saturday they lost 3-2 to Buckland.

Plenty of minutes for all of Jacob Shore, Max Dyer and Mason Alden.

Whilst things were going a little… pear shaped… for the Glovers at Huish Park there was plenty of action for the loanees out and about.

Firstly, upwards and Jordan Maguire-Drew wasn’t in the match day squad for high flying Barnet.

In the NLS, Bath City picked up a 1-1 draw in tough conditions at Twerton Park against Tonbridge Angels.

Will Buse played the full 90 for the Romans.

Dorchester continued their good run of form with a 1-0 win over Hayes and Yeading. Ollie Haste once more put in a solid 90 minutes for the Magpies.

Melksham played out an eight-goal thriller against Evesham, but unfortunately they conceded five of them. Benjani Jr was on the bench, information is a little thin on the ground as to whether or not he came on.

Shepton v Buckland was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch – The Mallet’s fixture list starting to pile up. Charlie Bateson will have to wait for more game time.

There were eight goals in Gillingham Town’s game against Brislington.

Again, unfortunately, the Gills only scored one of them – albeit coming from the boot of Harry Lock. Jack Bareham, Harrison Foster and Josh Haskett all started the game.

Welton Rovers v St Blazey also fell foul to the weather.

Here’s how the Glovers out on loan did this past Bank Holiday Monday – for most of them, it was a good day at the office.

Starting in the National League and Barnet got a 3-1 win over Oxford City, Jordan Maguire-Drew got the final ten minutes or so as the Bees look to solidify second place in the table.

In the National League South, there was a Cleano for Will Buse at Bath.

They beat Taunton at Wordsworth Drive 2-0, Buse was named in the Vanarama Team of the Day for Friday for his performance and picked up another three points today.

To Dorchester, and Ollie Haste played the full 90 for the Magpies in a feisty affair, they beat Tiverton 2-1 and both sides had a player sent off.

Down at Melksham, Benjani Jr was back in the starting line up, but they fell 2-1 to Frome Town in front of a crowd of over 1000.

Benjani was taken over just after the hour mark.

Welton Rovers had a tough afternoon, losing 8-2 against Falmouth. Jacob Shore was involved from the start for Rovers, Max Dyer was on the bench.

Finally, over at Gillingham, they picked up a 1-0 wn over Middlezoy Rovers and it was Josh Haskett who got the only goal of the game.

Jack Bareham, Harrison Foster and Harry Lock were also involved.

Whilst the Glovers were giving Torquay a bit of a battering at Huish Park… some (but not all) of our loanees beat the weather, here’s how they got on.

Firstly, Jordan Maguire-Drew was an unused sub in Barnet’s 2-2 draw with Solihull Moors.

Bath City drew 1-1 with W*ymouth, Will Buse was in goal for the Romans and played well.

Melksham drew 1-1 with Malvern, Benjani Jr was named on the bench, but information on if he came on is hard to come by.

Dorchester play on Saturday, away at Winchester, Gillingham didn’t play at all due to the weather, and it was a similar story for Welton who were also beaten by the weather.

So, onto our headline and Charlie Bateson and Shepton Mallet, who played Street in something of a derby clash,

Despite being named on the bench initially, Bateson came on to score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win.

The Glovers picked up three big ones away at Braintree on NonLeagueDay 2024, how about the other Glovers out and about.

Jordan Maguire-Drew was an unused sub for Barnet as the Bees gave Dorking a 6-0 walloping.

Will Buse has to wait until Sunday for his action this weekend, Bath play Worthing live on TNT Sports.

Benjani Jnr and Melksham didn’t have a game either, this isn’t going very well is it?

Right, onto those who did have a Saturday game…

Ollie Haste helped Dorchester maintain their fantastic recent form, they picked up a 1-0 win over high flying Salisbury, Haste started and was part of the back line that were heavily praised for their efforts in front of a bumper crowd.

On to Shepton, where it was something of a bad day at the office for the Mallet who last 2-0 to Bridgwater Utd, Charlie Bateson did start the game, but it was one to forget for them.

Aidan Skiverton started for Sherborne in a 1-0 loss to Petersfield Town.

Welton Rovers also lost, league leaders Helston Athletic got the better of a 2-1 score line, Jacob Shore put in a very positive performance at back with Mason Alden used from the bench,

Whilst at Gillingham they’ve had a double header week; in midweek, they were 3-0 down to Wincanton, dragged it back to 3-3 only to suffer last minute heart break and concede a last gasp goal.

In contrast, from a seven-goal fest to a snooze fest against Bishops Sutton. 0-0 the game ended.

Harrison Foster (who scored two of the goals in midweek), Jack Bareham, Josh Haskett, and Harry Lock all got plenty of game time across the two games.

A stalemate at Slough for the first team, but what about those elsewhere?

Well, we were hoping that Bath City could do us an almighty favour in their game against Chelmsford (they couldn’t, cheers Jerry 😉) but it was good to see Glovers’ loanee Gloveman Will Buse back in goal.

He’s made two appearances this week for the Romans, in a 2-0 win over Hemel in midweek and in their 3-1 loss to Chelmsford on Saturday.

After the game in midweek, Jerry Gill said of his number 1;

“I thought Will was excellent, gave us a calmness, came and got a lot of crosses, and his kicking was excellent as well”

In the division above, Jordan Maguire-Drew was in the starting line up for Barnet, they lost 1-0 against Woking.

JM-D was taken off ten minutes before the end.

Malachi Linton wasn’t in the W*ymouth squad for their game against Braintree, the Terras lost 1-0.

Dorchester were on the right side of a seven-goal thriller against Beaconsfield. Ollie Haste played the full 90.

Benjani Jr scored the only Melksham goal in a 2-1 defeat to Exmouth.

Shepton Mallet had their game postponed, it’s been VERY damp of late… too damp for Gillingham v Bitton as well.

Welton Rovers were on the wrong end of a 5-0 score line against Clevedon. Max Dyer and Jacob Shore both started for Rovers

Another round of fixtures come and go, and whilst there might not be much to shout about from Huish Park, elsewhere Glovers were in action, and for the most part having some more success.

Firstly, looking upwards, Jordan Maguire-Drew couldn’t play for Barnet on Saturday as they were in FA Trophy action and he is cup tied, but he did manage to get on for the final two minutes (plus added on time) in the Bees’ midweek fixture.

In to the National League South and Malachi Linton was on the score sheet TWICE for… well, you know, them… as they won 2-0 away at Aveley. Excellent work Mal.

The brace comes after being named their Player of the Month for February,

Goalkeeper Will Buse was back on Bath City’s bench for their defeat to Farnborough, he didn’t make an appearance from the bench, but it does clarify that he is still on loan at the Romans at least following a spell on the sidelines.

Melksham Town were 1-0 winners over ten man Bishop Cleeve, Benjani Junior started the game and was taken off right at the end as his side looked to hold on to their lead.

He also played, and scored, in their 1-1 draw with Tavistock in midweek, good work, Benji.

Dorchester Town won 2-1 over Beaconsfield Town – Ollie Haste put in a solid display for the full 90 minutes in the Magpies’ defence.

Down to Shepton where Charlie Bateson opened the scoring for the Mallet in their 3-1 win over St Blazey. He didn’t quite see the full game out, but was taken off towards the end.

Welton Rovers changed their manager in the week, but the incoming boss still gave Jacob Shore and Max Dyer a go from the start against a strong Bridgwater United side.

Bridgwater won 2-0, Mason Alden was also used from the bench.

Over at Gillingham, they won 1-0 away at Shirehampton, plenty of young Glovers in their squad; Harrison Foster provided the assist for the goal, with Josh Haskett and Jack Bareham both starting alongside him, Harry Lock was also involved from the bench.

Time to have another scoot around the divisions and see how those out on loan are getting on.

Firstly at Barnet, Jordan Maguire-Drew was back amongst the subs for the Bees, he’s missed the last few games but he made a 15-minute cameo in their 2-1 win over Hartlepool.

Down at W*ymouth, Malachi Linton was used from the start in the Terras’ 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

He was subbed off in the very final few seconds and did have a couple of chances to find the net again after a couple of goals in late February.

For Shepton, Charlie Bateson came on with half an hour to go in their Les Phillips’ Semi Final, the game ended 6-1 to the Mallet, with Bateson laying on an assist for the final goal. – All the best in the final, Charlie!

The final is scheduled for May 12th at Tiverton Town.

Mother Nature the winner elsewhere, Dorchester against Sholing was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, Melksham against Cribbs FC was all a bit damp, Welton vs Ilfracombe got a bit too squelchy for the ref, Sherborne vs Lymington was moist beyond reason whilst there was actually too much SNOW for Gillingham vs Bradford Town, which is a clash of teams with town names that sound like an all League Two clash rather than a Western League one.
