Yeovil’s derby game at W*ymouth was called off due to unfortunate circumstances. Everyone at Gloverscast sends their love and best wishes to the Yeovil fan, and their family. Let’s see how the rest of the division got on.

There were certainly fewer goals than Friday’s fixture list, however one game didn’t get that memo – Torquay United and Weston-super-mare played out a 3-3 thriller at Plainmoor, as the visitors recovered from behind twice to leave Devon with a point. Another thrilling end came at Slough Town, as their unbeaten home run continued, albeit they had to settle for a point after a 92nd minute Shaun Jeffers’ penalty earned visiting St Albans City a point.

Plenty of 2-0 wins took place too, for those up and down the division, Eastbourne Borough got themselves out of the drop zone with their win away at Dartford; in Somerset, Taunton Town fell at home to Bath City, while two teams near the top end of the league faced off, Worthing getting the better of Hampton & Richmond. Braintree Town finished off the 2-0 results with their win at home to Hemel Hempstead, who don’t yet find themselves out of trouble near the bottom.

A big surprise came at Aveley, as Havant & Waterlooville continued to show signs of life with a 2-1 win to give themselves an outside shout of escaping the drop. Farnborough came from behind to beat Tonbridge Angels 2-1 to make it 7 wins in a row on their late charge to the playoffs, while there was a 1-1 draw played out at the Gallagher Stadium between Maidstone and Welling United.

The final two games only had one goal to speak of, but it was an incredibly important goal, particularly for Yeovil’s season. In the 14th minute, Henry Young scored for Dover Athletic, as they registered just their 4th win of the season to defeat 2nd placed Chelmsford City in one of the shocks of the season. The result means the Glovers need just 3 more points to mathematically win the National League South! The final game was a delayed 0-0 draw due to traffic, between Chippenham Town and Truro City, as the visitors began their run of 10 games in 20 days.

Yeovil kicked off the Easter weekend with a stonking 3-0 win over Torquay United on Friday! Let’s see how the rest of the division got on, with the fate of another team sealed.

There were goals aplenty today, making our win look average in comparison (it certainly wasn’t average!) – we begin with two relegation threatened sides being hammered at home by playoff challengers. 9-man Eastbourne Borough lost 5-1 to Maidstone, including a Lamar Reynolds hat trick; while Havant & Waterlooville fell to Worthing by the same score line, Ollie Pearce taking his league total to 36 goals with a double.

Three sides hit four goals today, one of them being Aveley, who played out a thriller with Hemel Hempstead, a Charlee Hughes hat trick giving the visitors a 4-3 win. Chelmsford City ensured the title celebrations would have to move until at least Saturday, as they easily dealt with a poor Dartford side, a double from both Charlie Ruff and George Alexander sealing a 4-1 win for the hosts. Elsewhere in Somerset, Weston-super-mare hit four without reply, as they dismantled Taunton at home, the game ending at 4-0.

The final game with “goals, goals, goals” came at… Gloucester, as Truro City recovered from Slough Town’s two late goals in two minutes to score a late winner themselves, the game finishing 3-2 to the “hosts”. Ahead of Monday’s clash, W*ymouth come into the game off the back of a solid 1-1 draw away to Bath City; a playoff battle ended in victory for Braintree Town, as they got back to winning ways against St Albans City, while Welling United finished as 1-0 winners at home to Dover Athletic, confirming the visitor’s relegation from the National League South with 5 games to go.

A 0-0 draw was played out between Hampton & Richmond and Tonbridge Angels, while Farnborough and Chippenham Town never got going, and will have to be rescheduled.

Yeovil Town return to Huish Park in triumphant spirits, off the back of their 1-0 win at Braintree Town last weekend.

The Glovers put an end to their indifferent run of form with the win, and they take on a troubled Torquay United. The two South West sides have clashed around the Christmas period for the last four years, with varying degrees of success between the two outfits.

The last time these two sides met in the league, it was the mighty Yeovil who were successful, goals from Frank Nouble, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Jake Hyde handing us a 3-1 win.

Yeovil Town Team News

Mark Cooper insisted that Torquay will still be a tough challenge for us, speaking midweek he said: “We know if they are fit they (Dean Moxey, Asa Hall, Kevin Dawson, Tom Lapslie) will play and they will be desperate to come here and get something, so we have to fully respect that and make sure we give everything we have got and get the result.

There are no returns from injury for any of our injured stars, the gaffer also confirmed mid-week that the highly anticipated returns of Michael Smith and Rhys Murphy would have to wait until after Friday’s game at least, saying: “Murphy and Smith are back in training, but it will be too soon for them to come back in.”

Alex Whittle will not be seen again this season, with initial injury concerns having been eased somewhat, as Cooper confirmed the dynamic left back wouldn’t need surgery on his hamstring.

Torquay United Team News

Interim Gulls manager Aaron Downes spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow’s clash, labelling his side as “rare underdogs”, stating: “It’s very rare that Torquay United in the National League South goes to a team, and is sort of looked at as underdogs, as far as the league position is concerned, so for once we’ll relish the opportunity to do that, but we know that if we play well and if we perform the way we can perform, then we definitely know we can get a result there”.

Downes also confirmed that starting striker Aaron Jarvis would miss Friday’s clash, with other injuries in the squad being assessed right up to kickoff, saying: “Marsh (Ross Marshall) and Daws (Kevin Dawson) both touch and go really, not 100% certain on them. Jarvs (Aaron Jarvis) will be out, he’s still not right; he was ill last week but he also got the knock at Tonbridge on his knee, and then he had to come off later in the second half. So Jarvs (Jarvis) will be out, and Daws (Dawson) and Marsh (Marshall) are both tight”.

The Devon side come into Friday off the back of a 1-0 win themselves, an Asa Hall penalty proving the difference between them and Hampton & Richmond. Torquay have also found themselves in spotty form, although still an improvement under interim boss Downes, following his appointment after Gary Johnson’s departure. The Australian has a record of two wins, two draws and two losses since being appointed near the end of February.

On Non-League Day, it was Yeovil who triumphed in their top-of-the-table clash with Braintree Town, as they secured a massive 1-0 win away in Essex, and their spot in the playoffs! Let’s see how the rest of the division got on…

We begin back in Somerset, as Taunton played another home game (unbelievable, I know!) – they started well too, taking a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes, before conceding two late goals thanks to Charlie Ruff, of Chelmsford City. The visitors stole a 3-2 win at the death to keep the gap to the Glovers at 7 points. There was a heavy beating for Havant & Waterlooville on their travels, as they were dismantled on the south coast by a 4-1 scoreline at W*ymouth, while Welling United suffered a similar fate on their travels to Chippenham Town.

Aaron Kuhl finished his final appearance for Farnborough with two goals, as he’s been recalled to Dorking – his side went on to beat Dover 3-1, with Dover having relegation all but confirmed. Elsewhere in Essex, Aveley came from behind to secure a huge win for their playoff charge, beating St Albans City 2-1, while Tonbridge Angels left it late to come back for a win over Truro City by the same score line.

Dartford kept themselves alive in their relegation battle with a 1-1 draw against Hemel Hempstead, while Eastbourne Borough almost ended Slough’s unbeaten streak – ultimately the game finished as a 1-1 draw. Reiss Greenidge secured the three points for Maidstone to continue their playoff ambitions, with a 1-0 win over Weston-super-mare; and in the final game of Saturday, Torquay United took a huge step towards survival with Asa Hall’s penalty giving the Devon side a 1-0 win over Hampton & Richmond.

The final game of the weekend took place on Sunday, as Worthing hosted Bath City on TNT Sports. It was a spectacle for the cameras too, as two Danny Cashman goals levelled proceedings for Worthing, cancelling out goals from Scott Wilson and Jordan Dyer, as the game finished 2-2.

Yeovil’s two game losing run came to end with their 0-0 draw away at Slough on Saturday. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on, in a rarely seen full schedule!

We begin at Tonbridge Angels, who thumped a struggling Torquay United to leave them just three points outside the relegation zone, following their ten-point deduction. Three goals in five minutes for the hosts secured them a 4-1 victory! There were plenty of goals to discuss, and plenty of 3-1 home wins at that, one of which came at Welling United. They continued their impressive escape from relegation with a big win over Weston-super-mare, two late goals securing the win for the hosts.

There were also big results involving teams at the top of the table – Chelmsford continued to apply pressure on the Glovers’ title hopes, as they defeated Bath City, while Worthing took another damaging blow to their title ambitions, as Chippenham Town secured their second 3-1 win of the week. The final 3-1 win came for Farnborough, as they defeated the 10 men of Aveley to reignite hopes of a potential late playoff push.

There were further big results for teams near the top, and the bottom of the table, as Hampton & Richmond condemned their hosts Hemel Hempstead to yet another defeat, the Tudors now winless since January, while the visitors jumped to 4th in the table, undefeated in six. Truro City continue to show signs of life, as they put a dent in St Albans’ playoff charge with a 2-1 win; meanwhile Eastbourne Borough moved to within three points of safety with a 2-0 win over fellow relegation strugglers Taunton Town.

Dartford had yet another miserable afternoon as they sit just inside the drop zone, with their main keeper Billy Terrell being sent off just before the hour in a 2-0 loss at home to Maidstone. Down on the south coast, our noisy neighbours W*ymouth were surprisingly resilient in a 1-0 loss at home to next weekend’s hosts, Braintree Town, while in the battle of the bottom, it ended 0-0 between Dover Athletic and Havant & Waterlooville.

A balanced game saw both Slough and Yeovil share the points on a dark and grey Saturday afternoon.

A fairly even first half, with no real chances for either side. Yeovil looked solid, if unspectacular, and the same could be said for Slough, who defended vigilantly.

The second half had a few real chances, but neither side could find a breakthrough as Yeovil ended their two game losing run.

First half

With big games on the horizon, and perhaps looking to spark a response from his side, Mark Cooper shuffled the pack with four changes to the lineup. Brooklyn Genesini, Jay Foulston, Jordan Stevens and Frank Nouble come into the starting XI, with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Jordan Young and Sam Pearson dropping to the bench, and Olly Thomas missing out entirely.

The first chance of the game came for Yeovil just a couple of minutes into the game, as Stevens knocked a ball forward in the middle of the park, with Alex Fisher finding himself on the edge of the box, his audacious lob just bouncing wide of the post.

Shortly after, Slough got them in and around the Yeovil box, before Nathan Minhas found his way into the official’s book after just four minutes for a heavy challenge on Jordan Stevens.

Ten minutes in, and Yeovil had their next chance, as Jake Wannell played a great ball downfield under pressure from the Slough attack. He found Frank Nouble, who dominated Temi Eweka physically before some fancy footwork got him out of further trouble. He found Jordan Stevens in space who attempted a shot from distance, winning Yeovil a corner, resulting in a Williams header that landed comfortably in the hands of Dan Lincoln.

Both sides continued to feel each other out, with both defences doing a good job of snuffing out any chances at goal. The first corner of the game came on the 20 minute mark, with Nouble clearing initially before a good cross from Matt Lench forced an important defensive header for another corner.

There were calls for a penalty just a minute later, as a ball forward clipped Charlie Cooper’s shoulder, but his arms were down and the referee promptly gave the visitors a free kick for a foul on the aforementioned.

A cagey few minutes followed, and it wasn’t until the 27th minute where we saw the first proper Yeovil chance, a backheel from Jordan Stevens feeding Alex Whittle on the wing, his cross being blocked by player-manager Scott Davies and cleared for a throw. Yeovil began to stamp their authority on the game, as a ball forward for Alex Fisher allowed him into the box, his shot being blocked for a corner.

Yeovil found themselves on the attack once again, as Nouble started a counter-attack following a successful press in midfield, his ball failing to find Fisher, before Stevens picked up the loose ball and tried to find Fisher once again – unfortunately he was off balance and the ball petered out for a goal kick.

David Ogbonna showed off his frightening pace against Alex Whittle, forcing a free kick just a few yards outside the box, Matt Lench only able to find the head of Morgan Williams, before the follow-up shot was blocked by Cooper’s chest. Slough continued to apply pressure on the Yeovil defence, but to no avail.

A counter-attack from Slough was swiftly cut out by the debutant Genesini, the ball then falling to Matt Worthington who had a shot from distance, however he could only find the hands of Dan Lincoln, following a deflection.

A wonderful flick-on from Alex Fisher fed through Matt Worthington in the 41st minute, he was brought to ground inside the box by a Slough defender but the referee wanted none of it. Yeovil continued to press, earning a corner shortly afterwards; it was a dangerous ball from Charlie Cooper but it was well cleared by Bayliss. The resulting throw-in had bodies scrambling, the bouncy artificial surface causing issues for both teams, before Jay Foulston found himself with the ball, his shot bouncing wide.

A weak foul from Genesini resulted in a free-kick for Slough just before half-time, but Slough couldn’t capitalise, leading to a Yeovil Town counter. Jordan Stevens charged downfield, but a heavy touch meant the ball trickled out of play, and the half-time whistle brought an end to the first half.

Half time: Slough Town 0 Yeovil Town 0

Second half

There were no changes at half time as things got underway, with the first meaningful action coming a few minutes in. A free kick to Yeovil by the edge of the pitch on the line of the 18 yard box was whipped in by Charlie Cooper, but Scott Davies got to it first and put it out for a corner.

Slough’s first chance of the half came in the 52nd minute, as Scott Davies stood over a free kick from about 25 yards, however it cannoned over the bar and out of the stadium. Not one for the highlight reel Scott…

Yeovil followed up with their first proper chance of the half, as Worthington took a ball into midfield, layed it off for Genesini. He danced past his man and found Stevens in a gap between the midfield and defence, he then surged forward before arrowing a shot just over the bar.

A sequence of free-kicks followed for Slough, with a great ball from Gabe George finding the head of Temi Eweka, but his header was tame and landed straight in the hands of Joe Day.

Minute 59 ticked over, and the first substitution of the game was made by Yeovil, with Jahmari Clarke replacing Jordan Stevens, who had a good showing when he did get himself on the ball.

Slough earned their second yellow of the game when Jeanmal Prosper made a cynical foul on Charlie Cooper on the 61st minute. Yeovil continued to demonstrate their impressive ball-playing abilities, drawing the press from Slough and making their way into the opposition half, before Alex Whittle went down requiring treatment. He was helped off the field, and was replaced by Jordan Young in the 65th minute.

Clarke’s first involvement in the game came just a couple of minutes later, as he beat the offside trap and his cross was blocked for a corner. From the resulting corner, Jordan Young found the head of Wannell, but his header was scuffed and it floated over the bar.

Slough’s first substitution came on the 70 minute mark, as David Ogbonna was replaced by Slavi Spasov. A couple of minutes later, Yeovil found themselves on the attack once again, a great bit of linkup between Worthington and Genesini creating space for Jahmari Clarke, who battled past two Slough players, his dangerous cross being cleared for a throw.

Shortly afterwards, Jake Wannell found himself in the book for stopping a counter-attack inside Slough’s half. Slough’s second substitution came on 74 minutes, as Nathan Minhas was replaced by Trae Cook-Appiah, as they looked to take something from the game. Another dangerous attack came for Yeovil when play got underway, in similar fashion to the previous, this time Nouble leading the charge.

Alex Fisher became the second player to be booked for Yeovil for remonstrating with the referee following an elbow to the head after the whistle had been blown for a free kick, it didn’t make any impact as he was substituted immediately afterwards for Sam Pearson.

Slough took the opportunity to grab a couple of chances on goal, including a cannon of a shot from Scott Davies forcing a good save from Joe Day. A bitty few minutes followed, with some offisde calls and sloppy long balls from both sides bringing us to the 83rd minute where Sam Pearson danced around a couple of Slough players, feeding it to Young but the attack died out.

Slough had the next chance a couple of minutes later, as a shot from Josh Jackman whizzed past the post.

The artificial turf caused some issues for both sides once again on the 89th minute, as a long kick forward from Joe Day bounced over the midfield, and the two banks of Yeovil attackers and Slough defenders. Sam Pearson nearly got on the end of it but Dan Lincoln beat him to it, not that it would’ve mattered as Temi Eweka was down nursing an injury anyways.

A probing long ball from Charlie Cooper forced a corner for Yeovil as the game entered extra time, but Yeovil couldn’t capitalise. Cooper then found himself in the book, assumedly for some not-so-nice words to the referee, before Slough made their final substitution, with Matt Lench being replaced by Christie Ward.

For all their huff and puff, neither side could find a breakthrough as the final whistle blew.

There is a debut for new signing Brooklyn Genesini, who slots in at RWB. Jay Foulston slots in at CB, with Jordan Stevens expected to play as a number 10. Another new signing, Jahmari Clarke, is named among the subs. Frank Nouble is the fourth change, as he returns to the starting lineup in place of Olly Thomas, who isn’t involved at all today.

It was a second defeat in a row for Yeovil Town on Tuesday night, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Chippenham Town. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on, across the first half of the week of fixtures!

The standard Monday night slot was taken up once again by Aveley, who continued their push for the playoffs with a 2-1 win at home to Tonbridge Angels. Moving on to Tuesday, and we begin in West Sussex, where Worthing were dealt a blow in their title hopes as they were toppled by an impressive Farnborough performance. A Joe Haigh double helped the visitors along the way to a 3-2 win, bumping them up to 11th.

A shock came at Plainmoor, where Torquay United were handily defeated by Taunton Town; perhaps the extra rest from those postponements came in handy (more on that later!) – there were further issues for top-of-the-table sides on Tuesday night, as Chelmsford had a man sent off, and were sent home defeated by Maidstone, meaning all of the top three were defeated on Tuesday night.

There were three more 2-0 wins, all for playoff contenders – Bath City had a man sent off late on, but it didn’t matter as they beat a sinking Hemel Hempstead side, Braintree Town finished off another relegation candidate in Dartford, who were down to 10 men near the end of the game, while St Albans won away at Weston-super-mare, courtesy of a Shaun Jeffers double. In the final game of Tuesday night, Dover Athletic were denied their first win since January, as a late equaliser from former Glover Jack Clarke meant the points were shared with Eastbourne Borough.

There was a Wednesday night fixture to top off the running order, as Havant & Waterlooville came from behind to beat Saturday’s hosts Slough Town in a 2-1 win.

Finally, postponement watch, with our guest stars Truro City and Taunton Town! Truro had their game with W*ymouth called off on Tuesday night, while Taunton were supposed to play tonight (Thursday night as I write this) at home to Weston-super-mare, with the game initially being ruled as ON, before being ruled as OFF.

Chippenham made it four points from a possible six against Yeovil this season, as they inflicted a double dose of home defeat on the Glovers. An uninspiring performance was witnessed by Tom, who has given us his Five Conclusions…

Alex Fisher celebrates his goal against Farnborough.

Classy from Fisher! There were some pretty dour performances out there tonight, but one player that did impress me was Alex Fisher. His header was taken expertly, meeting Olly Thomas’ wonderful cross to give Yeovil the lead. I think his determination alone earned him my Man of the Match (and the sponsor’s Man of the Match as well). His work rate, and success in aerial duels across his 90 minutes were great to see, and I think he’ll continue to play a part in Yeovil’s run-in. Credit must also go to Sonny-Blu Lo-Everton, and Alex Whittle, who also put in solid performances.

Credit to ChippenhamAs much as Yeovil clearly weren’t up to the races tonight, credit to Chippenham for executing their gameplan to a tee. I spoke to Steve Rutter before the game, and he said we had to be careful of a potential banana skin here, as their away form, particularly against better teams, has been impressive this season – and we saw exactly that. Calm in defence, with Fisher’s goal the only real lapse in performance for the visitors, three well taken goals to give them three well earned points.

Jordan Young. Picture courtesy of Gary Brown.

It’s time to discuss Jordan Young. He started the season quietly, before setting fire following his opening goal against Tonbridge Angels, but since his contract extension at the start of 2024, I’ll be honest and say I’ve seen nothing from our number 11 at all. Tonight was no different, as we saw Young either trying too much at once and being dispossessed, or being pushed out of the game. I don’t know where the Jordan Young of 2023 has gone, but I’d desperately like him back for the end of the season please!

Some positives… It’s easy to be negative after a loss, but there were some positives to take from tonight. Josh Owers gave a good account of himself when he replaced the injured Charlie Cooper, that pairing with Sonny-Blu gave us a little bit of both defensive stability, and a little bit going forward with our special number 16. We looked a bit more fluid in the second half compared to the first, before the goals took the wind out of our sails, and the ideas were there from Nouble and Stevens, nothing was coming off for us though. It’s not all doom and gloom yet!

However… we got away with it tonight. Yes, I’ve listed off the positives above, but these are games we need to be clinching, and widening the gap at the top. We have got seriously lucky tonight, with Chelmsford and Worthing both losing too, there’s no need to panic but we have got to be careful that this doesn’t set a precedent for the end of the season. Up the Yeo!

It was a first home defeat for Yeovil on Saturday, as they fell to a 1-0 loss against Welling United. Let’s see how the rest of the league got on, and how it impacts the table…

We begin in Devon, where Torquay United won for the first time since a win in January over basement-side Dover, as they thumped Dartford 4-1, lifting them back into the top half of the table and leaving the visitors perilously close to the drop zone. A big shock came at Worthing, where Taunton Town registered their first win of 2024 in a 3-1 win over the hosts to boost their own survival hopes. Havant & Waterlooville played host in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Tonbridge Angels, former Glover Ryan Seager continuing his goalscoring run with the relegation threatened side.

10-man Maidstone couldn’t recover against St Albans, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to further boost the visitor’s playoff ambitions; Hampton & Richmond continued their own playoff push with a dramatic 96th minute winner over Tuesday’s visitors Chippenham Town, while Aveley’s promotion hopes took a hit as they fell to a Malachi Linton double against W*ymouth. In Essex, there was a 1-1 draw between Braintree Town and Slough Town, while in East Sussex, Eastbourne Borough boosted their hopes of survival in a 1-0 win over new manager Alan Dowson’s Hemel Hempstead side.

In the 4pm kickoffs (you read that correctly, an RTC on the M4 delayed these games), the wait was worth it for visiting side Farnborough, as they defeated Bath City in a 2-0 win. In the other later kickoff, Weston-super-mare defeated bottom side Dover Athletic in a 1-0 win. In the “even later” kickoff, the 7:30pm game between Truro City and Chelmsford City did not disappoint. In the second game played at Gloucester City’s Meadow Park by Truro, the Clarets romped to a 4-1 win, two George Alexander penalties contributing to their victory.
