A draw was tough to take. This was the epitome of a six-pointer and one where in hindsight we could have really done with three points. York, Halifax, Gateshead and Torquay all got wins with Gary Johnson’s side leapfrogging Yeovil after their third win in a row. We’re now in 22nd, five points behind Aldershot in 19th. In truth, I didn’t have a clear enough view for our penalty appeal, but many think it should have been. Aldershot had a golden opportunity to grab victory from the spot and they didn’t. Maybe lady luck is on our side for the run in…

We improved from Tuesday. The bar was low right? But we looked more like a side yesterday. Defensively we looked okay, although giving the tallest man on the pitch a free header in the box was less than ideal. In midfield were still trying to find a combination that clicks, is fit enough to last and can create chances. I wouldn’t describe us at outstanding, but from the very low standards on Tuesday, we’ve pulled out a performance and arrested the slide.

Everything good came from Matt Worthington. As important as Staunton is at the back of the pitch, Worthington is at the front. He’s a leader on that pitch, setting an example to all his teammates. He assists the equaliser, is always an option for a team mate and was the legs getting in behind the Aldershot defence on plenty of occasions. He’s really stood out for me this season and when we’ve not had him in the side, we’ve missed him.

We came out in our numbers. 529 Glovers made the trip on Good Friday to try and roar the team to victory. It was an amazing effort after the dismal showing on Tuesday and it shows, even when times are tough, the amazing support this club has. SU Glovers were on the terrace in the thick of it and will have felt that support and hopefully have a plan to harness that energy when they complete this protracted takeover. 

Admittedly I’m struggling with this one, but we have to try and believe. There are still games to go, and it’s not over yet. We could still do it. Aldershot weren’t much of a side. If we can build on this point and get something from Dorking, confidence can grow and we may do something. Its the National League after all. If Elon Musk can crash twitter once and for all we may actually shut down all this ridiculous noise that is not helpful in a fight for survival. On social media many have gone from ‘supporting the team, not the regime’ to supporting the not-yet regime rather than the team.

Match Report

Yeovil Town earned a point at Aldershot this afternoon in a game of expected quality between 20th and 21st in the National League. Results around the Glovers mean that Mark Cooper’s side fall to 22nd this evening.

A nervy first half never saw many chances, but Grant Smith was forced into action in the 26th minute. 

In the second half, former Weymouth man Tyler Cordner headed in from a corner to give Aldershot the lead.

In the 65th minute the Glovers equalised. Malachi Linton released Matt Worthington on the right wing and his cross found Callum Harriott in the box to give the Glovers hope.

Linton found space on left of the box but could only put his effort into the side netting.

Drama ensued before the final whistle when Aldershot were awarded a controversial penalty. Yeovil lost out on the edge of the Aldershot box and as Campbell broke, in seemingly an offside position, he was brought down by Chiori Johnson.

Fortunately for the Glovers, Jake Hutchinson skied his penalty but a point doesn’t feel enough right now.

Mark Cooper said he should have left Yeovil following the victory against Eastleigh and that the club didn’t get recruitment right before the transfer window shut, laying bare the division at Huish Park.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins after the Glover’s 4-0 defeat at Gateshead, Cooper said: “I’ve been promoted out of this league as a manager, I think I know what a good National League player looks like. Obviously some people didn’t think that I knew that. We haven’t done the right thing and we haven’t reacted the right way to what we needed to do before the transfer window shut, in my opinion. The proof will be in the pudding and we’ll all get judged on that.”

You don’t need a PHD to read between the lines, with Cooper clearly taking aim at the club’s potential new owners. He added that the recruitment has affected the changing room: “I think it’s clear over the last few weeks it’s affected the changing room. In any business, if you don’t get your recruitment right you’re in for disaster. You’re always playing catch up and hopefully it’s a lesson for everybody, that in future, wherever we are that the recruitment needs to be solid.”

There was chants of “We want Cooper out” during the game, and Cooper understood the reasoning.

“It’s part of the job, you have to accept that. If you don’t win games, it’s coming. I think the reasonable, proper fans understand and know what’s going on. I wanted to come and build this club like I did at Forest Green for five years and make it into proper football league club. But you need support and you need backing for that,” he said.

When asked why he hasn’t walked away, Cooper said he wasn’t willing to walk out on the players, but that he “probably should have done after the Eastleigh game”.

Match Report

In what was absolutely a must-win game against relegation rivals, Yeovil Town were hammered 4-0 by Gateshead this evening. The Glovers are 5 points adrift ahead of a trip to 20th-placed Aldershot on Good Friday.

Here’s how it unfolded in front of Coatesie.

First half

After a quiet opening six minutes, a good move down the right side by Scott Pollock caused a moment of panic but it came to nothing more than a corner.

Two minutes later it was a misjudged header from Pollock which almost let the home side carving out a chance. As ever it was Grant Smith who got the block in to nullify the danger.

Jordan Young lifted an effort just over the bar after good play down the right from Bevan, before the best chance of the game of the game came fell to the home side. A mistake by Bevan saw Marcus Dinanga lifted the ball over onrushing Smith and and Campbell headed it goalwards, only for Max Hunt to head off the line.

If that was a warning, it only took until 19th minute for the warning to become a mortal blow. DINANGA broke the offside trap and lashed it in from the angle off the underside of the bar and past Smith. Sloppy defending again punished by a striker willing have a shot. Not rocket science. 1-0

Eight minutes later and it was 2-0 and effectively game over – obviously not, but as a contest. A superb ball by Greg Olley was met by the header of DINANGA. 2-0.

On 30 minutes it could so easily have been three. You guessed it, another mistake saw a ball to the back post fall to Campbell whose effort was blocked by Smith.

The mood in the away end turned. What had been relatively supportive and noisy, fell angry and muted. Such little movement and attacking intent was on display.

Even when we did get forward, the mistakes were everywhere. A rate forward press saw the ball break to Bevan but his effort ran out of play – on the other side of the pitch. Then an error in the Gateshead back line was seized on by Charlie Cooper, but his pass to Young was overhit.

“Que sera, sera, whatever will be will be, we’re going to Bath City,” sang the away support. It only got more toxic when the half-time whistle blew.

Second Half

The players were sent out early for the second half and whatever was said at least seemed to create some spark. Well, a deflected shot from Cooper which went wide for a corner.

On 52 minutes, an aimless ball forward to Andrew Oluwabori broke down and the home side attacked down right and drilled a low cross in which was crying out for a Campbell to turn it in at the back post. Inexplicably he put it wide.

But third goal was not far away and it came in some style. Connor PANI simply looked up from 25 yards out and hit a thunderous effort past Smith.

That was enough for the away end to turn on the manager. Very audible chants of “We want Cooper Out” were heard. The manager was unmoved with Chris Todd directing affairs on the the touchline.

Whoever was making the changes, they made three of them. Maguire-Drew replaced the injured Cooper, Zanda Siziba was on for Hunt and Malachi Linton was on for Jack Clarke.

The difference was….minimal, I’m being generous. Pollock dragged an effort wide after 65 minutes and on 76 minutes Siziba jinked in to the box and hit one over the bar.

Probably the biggest insult was that Gateshead, a relegation rival (albeit in decent form), genuinely took the mick out of us as the game dragged on. Dinanga had the ball in the net only to be denied his hat-trick by the offside flag, and then he played one twos inside the box with Campbell.

The final (of many insults) came with 86 minutes gone. BAILEY, on as a substitute a minute earlier, poked home a fourth goal.

If I have seen a worse performance from a Yeovil Town side than this, I can’t recall it. Devoid of everything. Effort. Talent. Confidence. A bleak night.

Matt Worthington, Jamie Reckord and Max Hunt are in the starting line up with Jordan Maguire-Drew and Ryan Law dropping to bench and Miguel Freckleton suspended.

Malachi Linton, Zanda Siziba and Chiori Johnson make up the bench, with no room for Reo Griffiths again.

Yeovil Town suffered a damaging defeat at the hands of Southend United on the telly last night and find themselves in huge trouble in the relegation battle in the National League. Here are Ian’s Five Conclusions (although there could have been more!) from Huish Park…

It couldn’t have gone much worse. A devastating injury to Alex Fisher will inevitably see him out of action for a long time. It was horrible to see the reaction of players and supporters in the immediate aftermath of the incident and I hope he makes a strong recovery. Miguel Freckleton picked up a red card, albeit a harsh one, which put to bed any hope of a comeback. It feels like a damaging defeat mentally as much as anything. Social media is sapped of belief, Huish Park was sapped of belief and rebuilding that belief will not be easy.

I thought we started well. We came out quickly and Scott Pollock should have put us ahead in the first five minutes. If he scores there it totally changes the complexion of the evening. As it was, Southend handled pressure and as we’ve seen so many times this season, they kept our attackers at arms length. Jake Hyde took the Shrimpers first chance when it came to them and once they were ahead it Southend could be confident that they were heading back to Essex with three points. So many times this season we’ve talked about how we’ve played well in spells, or for a half, but rarely for the full 90 minutes. Is it any wonder that we are where we are?

How we miss Matt Worthington. The yellow card at Halifax looks absolutely pivotal now. We tried Freckleton in there last week and it didn’t work and yesterday with Pollock in there it didn’t work either. Pollock is still finding match fitness and it showed. The energy Worthy gives us in midfield is irreplaceable. Charlie Cooper tried to take on some of that role but it’s clear how much Worthington’s energy is missed in the team. 

We never looked like scoring, whereas Southend had two chances and took them both. [Insert story of the season line]. We look a better team with Jordan Young in the side but we could have been there until next week and Southend’s keeper would have claimed everything comfortably. The injury to Fisher scuppered our plans to change anything. The tactical response was to bring on Max Hunt, which I understand. Knock it long and bring others into it, but no one got near him and we struggled to get the ball to him in good areas. Malachi Linton came on after but there was no pattern to rhythm to our attacking play for him to make a difference. The script was written for Rhys Murphy to settle matters with a typical poachers effort on his return.

I don’t know how we get out of this. It’s hard not to be defeatist in this position were in, so I apologise for that. The next three matches are huge and right now it feels an impossibility that we come away with anything from Gateshead, Aldershot or Dorking. The inquest of this season will come (probably on this website) but my overriding feeling yesterday was that we’re facing the abyss. Conspicuous by their absences yesterday were the players we’ve signed to get us out of this predicament, it’s clear they are either unfit or not good enough. When the time came to make signings that could help us, we’ve got it absolutely wrong. Mark Cooper cut a dejected figure yesterday after the match and I’m not sure even he can save us.
