Yeovil Town’s Josh Staunton took to social media following the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat to Boreham Wood to praise the performance of the side despite the result.

Dale Gorman’s opener was cancelled out by an own goal before Adi Yussuf was sent off just before half time.

Boreham Wood scored a winner midway through the second half with the Glovers unable to equalise despite a number of late chances.

Staunton, who was captain in the absence of Luke Wilkinson and Mark Little, said on Twitter;

“Always a hard pill to swallow after a loss. Especially after battling away with 10 men. Thought the boys were excellent second half and we were unlucky to come away empty handed in the end. The fans were amazing, we appreciate the support!”

Yeovil Town announced the signing of former Watford and Notts County midfielder Mitchell Rose before the game against Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Signing on for a undisclosed length of time. Rose, the brother of England left back Danny, joins after last leaving Boston United in the National League North,

The move is not without controversy as earlier this year he was convicted of assault and given a 9-month suspended sentence after a 26-year-old woman was left with a fractured cheek bone after an incident in South Yorkshire.

Yeovil Town left back Jordan Barnett was disappointed to come away from Boreham Wood with nothing after the Glovers lost 2-1.

Speaking to BBC Somerset, Barnett was adament the Glovers were on top both with 11 and 10 men with Adi Yussuf being shown a brace of yellow cards shortly before half time.

“We were definately on top, especially in the first half, when we had the man sent off we have to be a little more defensive, but we were also on top with ten men”

“In the second half, we came out and battled very hard and we were dominant throughout the game”

When asked about the sending off, Barnett was almost refreshingly honest about it saying;
“Obviously it’s a bit stupid, it’s a bit reckless, but it’s one of them where the ref is always going to give it”

“It’s just a stupid one really”

There were chances for the Glovers throughout the game both with 11 and 10 on the pitch and Barnett was quick to praise opposition goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore.

“Quigz (Joe Quigley) has had a few (chances), Knowlesy had a few, the keeper has pulled off some worldy saves off… but we were obvioulsy on top for large parts.”

The result leaves Yeovil Town 11th in the National League table on nine points.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll spoke to BBC Somerset following the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat to Boreham Wood on Saturday.

He talked of his pride as the visitors spent most of the game with ten men after a 38th minute red card to Adi Yussuf.

“I thought more so than that (just) at times, we were the better team, I’m a bit disappointed we haven’t won, but I am immensely proud of the group of players.”

“They took themselves through that process (after the red card) they took themselves through the challenges and I thought they played wonderfully in the second half”

With regards to the sending off – the Glovers’ second of the season already – when asked if he thought it was a red card decision, Sarll simply replied “Yes”

He would go on to reiterate his pleasure at the response, rather than focus on the incidents that led to either of Yussuf’s yellow cards.

“I thought second half especially, the football we played, how competitive we were – I know it’s a defeat, but we are going to be all right, we are”

There was praise for former Boreham Wood ‘keeper Grant Smith, who despite an error in the build up to one of the hosts’ goals has been a regular member of the squad and often backed  by supporters, as well as for Josh Staunton who filled in at centre-half with a performance described by Sarll as “enormous”

Speaking on Yeovil’s newest recruit, Mitch Rose, Sarll indicated he was impressed with the midfielder’s debut performance and would expect more from the former Notts County man over time.

“I’ve known Mitchell a long, long time, he’s a powerful athlete and charachter and I thought you saw his qualities straight away when he came on.

“He’s not trained with us yet… he’s going to be a massive player for us, especially without Luke (Wilkinson). He gives us another senior man, another established man and he has real qualities.”

Yeovil Town have a 10-day wait for another competitive game when facing Maidenhead on October 5th, athough there was an indication of a midweek friendly against an unnamed EFL side this midweek.

To many people, the Somerset Premier Cup doesn’t mean an awful lot, a Wednesday night tie against Bridgwater United only attracted a little over 300 supporters to Huish Park.

However, they got to witness a little bit of Yeovil Town history.

For the Skiverton family, a name synonymous with the green and white of Yeovil Town, it was a night of pride as Terry – the legendary Glovers’ player, manager, player-manager, academy manager, assistant manager – signalled for a subtitution, a substitution that would welcome his son, Finlay on to the pitch.

With the number 9 on his back, Skivo Junior not only made his first team debut but scored an 88th minute goal to wrap up a comfortable 4-1 victory.

We here at the Gloverscast are suckers for a statistic, so here are a few numbers we’ve crunched.

Between Skivo Senior and Skivo Junior, they have a combined 384 appearances and 45 goals for the Glovers’ first team, but of course, Terry has most of them!

Terry’s final competitive appearance for the Glovers came on Saturday 21st March 2009 – a 0-0 draw against the MK Dons, he came off after just 36 minutes in a game that included the likes of Chris Weale in goal, Paul Warne and Andros Townsend.

That equates to 4568 days since a Skiverton graced the hallowed turf of Huish Park.

As for scoring, Terry’s final goal in green and white came a few week’s before that on Saturday 22nd November 2008, a 23rd minute goal against Tranmere Rovers (see below) would be the last time the name Skiverton made the goal scoring vidiprinter.

So… with a little maths (and some help from Google…) it’s taken exactly 12 Years and 10 months  for the feat to be repeated – or if you’d prefer, exactly 154 months, or maybe 670 weeks, or 4687 days.

Number one in the music charts was ‘Live Your Life’ by T.I. (featuring Rihanna), in the Premier League that day; Man City beat Arsenal 3-0 thanks to goals from Stephen Ireland, Robinho and Daniel Sturridge.

(Feeling old yet? Me too)

Who knows what the future holds for Finlay at Huish Park, but everyone at the Gloverscast congratulates Skivo Junior for his debut appearance and goal… here’s to many more!

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll has been speaking to the media ahead of the Glovers’ game against Chesterfield on Saturday and has said how proud he is of his side’s early season form, but that he – and his team are taking the season one game at a time.

“Any momentum is driven through training time, opportunity to learn, practice, repeat and drill and all of those things, that’s where our momentum has been built from”

“We’ve spoken about the construction of the squad; there’s a lot of misfits in there, people who have had two clubs in a season, so all the time we get to train and rehearse is to our benefit”

After three wins in a row, Sarll was adamant the squad aren’t getting ahead of themselves saying even in the impressive 3-0 win over Stockport, there was probably more to find.

“There were things Saturday, it was a good performance, an accomplished, professional performance, but there were still elements that absolutely have to be improved and developed”

“We have a saying in the dressing room ‘runs of one’ we only concentrate on the next game, we’re not interested in winning ten in a row, we are not interested in talking about runs, we’re not taking about going unbeaten on not conceding runs”

“One game, brutally, at a time”

Sarll spoken about how his team of ‘misfits’ were also lacking a long, hard season of experience, he named a number of his squad who hadn’t managed 40 games in a single season before who may have to, but reiterated that it was a simple case of one game at a time.

Looking ahead to the Chesterfield game, the gaffer was complimentary of the opposition, but confident his side would be ready for the challenge.

“I think what (Chesterfield boss) James (Rowe) have done is carried on those winning habits that they need to win games, I think all of our games are tough in a different way this season to last,

“This will be a tough game, they’ve recruited very powerfully and there comes an expectation with that type of recruitment”

“We will have to be very, very if we are to get anything from the game”

Middlesbrough loanee Jack Robinson is available to make his debut after a small injury whilst Matt Worthington’s suspension is also up making him available, but Sarll says he may have some tough decisions to bring them back into a winning squad.

Joe Quigley hammers home the opener.

Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley has been speaking to be the press ahead of the Glovers’ game against Chesterfield.

Quigley has been in red hot form having scored five goals in the opening four games and has said that he’s been pleased with how he and side have bounced back after an opening day defeat to King’s Lynn.

“It’s been a good start, first four games and three good results, the first one was disappointing but we bounced back well…

“I think I’ve done well, obviously I’m five in four which you can’t complain about”

Quigley praised his teammates for helping in this rich vein of form, citiing a team high on confidence, players in form around him and an increased work ethic from the group throughout pre-season, but he also took time to recognise the work Manager Darren Sarll has done with the front man.

“The gaffer has a different wat of working with me to most others which has been very beneficial to me and to the team; if we can keep doing that we won’t go far wrong”

“We’ve got a good relationship, if you can match his work ethic then you’re not going to go too far wrong.”

Looking at the run of recent results, the forward said how the 3-0 win over Stockport was just another step along the road to proving this Yeovil team are a match for any side in the league.

“It was only a matter of time before it clicked going forward, we have been so good defensivley… it proves we can go toe to toe with anyone, as a group we don’t care what anyone spends, we know we can match them”

With five goals already on the chart for Quigley, he admitted he does have a target in mind… but that he’ll be keeping it to himself.

“There’s a figure in mind which I set at the start of the season, there’s bits on the way you can tick off, it’s been a good (goalscoring) start

“I’ll keep that (the target) to myself, but it’s on target… I’m happy with it”

Yeovil Town have confirmed the details for their Somerset Premier Cup tie with Bridgwater United.

The game will take place at Huish Park on Wednesday 22nd September, kicking off at 7:45pm

The Somerset Premier Cup is currently held by Weston Super-Mare following their victory in 2018/19 with neither of the subsequent tournaments taking place.

As for the Glovers, Somerset’s only full time football club haven’t won the County Cup since 2005… suggesting it isn’t that high on the priority list.

Should the game end level at 90 minutes, the game will go to extra time before, if needed, penalties.

Furthermore… the rules state Yeovil must play a ‘full strength side’.

Rule 3 (c ) says “Each Club shall play its full strength team in all matches, except for the reserve team strength of Football League Clubs, or be dealt with by the Management Committee and Clubs could be fined up to a maximum of £1000.00.”

Ticket details for the game will be released in due course.

Max Hunt against Halifax – Pic Courtesy of Mike Kunz

Yeovil defender Max Hunt spoke to the press before the Glovers’ game vs Stockport County on Saturday, speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins he was pleased with how he, and the side had started the season.

“I’ve been very pleased, I’ve had to do some work, (I) came back in pre-season fit like all the boys and how the gaffer and Terry (Skiverton) have worked us is credit to how we’ve started.”

Hunt was also full of praise for his central defensive partner, Luke Wilkinson, saying having the experience and know-how of Wilko and the consistency of having a settled defence was key to seeing the team improve.

“Last season there was a lot of different partners, a lot of different people playing in the back four for a number of different reasons,

“Whenever I’ve played with Wilko, me and him have got a good relationship on and off the pitch – and we’ve had some good results, so let’s hope that continues.

Hunt drew praise from all corners following an incredible last ditch tackle against Halifax in the dying moments at the weekend – Gloverscast Ben described it as “as good as a goal” on the latest edition of the Podcast, whilst Darren Sarll also praised the defenders intervention.

“It was important, the boys had worked hard for 88 minutes, it’s important for me to make that tackle, thankfully I timed it well, the ref could have evened it up after he gave us a penalty, but I made sure I timed it right and didn’t give him the chance to”

There was talk of how Hunt is hoping to be more of a threat in the attacking situations as well as continuing to be resolute defensively with the central defender admitting he’d like a few more goals to his name as the season progresses.

“I think we’ve got a big side in general this season and our set piece takers are fantastic, so as a team, but me as well we have to start chipping in”

The fomer Carlisle man was adament that the team was confident of a positive result and said that he and the entire Glovers side were respectful of Ex-Yeovil forward Paddy Madden but that they were ready for the challenges the whole Stockport side will bring.

Yeovil Town’s Watford loanee Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was singled out for praise by Darren Sarll when speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins following the Glovers’ 1-0 win over Halifax Town on Saturday.

Lo-Everton, who started in an attacking role just in behind frontman Joe Quigley before being substituted late on for Adi Yussuf caught the eye of the sponsors who gave him the Man of the Match, and his boss was full of praise for the 18-year-old:

“He’s a brilliant footballer, he has a brilliant mind, for someone that creative he is actually a little too inquisitive because he should just trust his eyes.

“If we all saw football like Sonny did, there would be far more creative players in the country and there isn’t and that is because they don’t see the game that way, Sonny certainly does and I think as he plays more for us, he will trust more what his eyes tell him more and he’ll be even sharper, quicker and smoother.

“He never looks like he has to try hard, Sonny, he has the lovely way of making everything look easy.”

Lo-Everton has now started each of the last two games for the Glovers after coming off the bench late on vs King’s Lynn on the opening day, and whilst he is yet to complete a full 90 minutes, he’s already making a lasting impression on this Yeovil side.
