October 2025 (Page 8)

Summer signing James Daly and long-term absentee midfielder Jacob Maddox are both back in light training, according to Yeovil Town manager Richard Dryden.

Winger Daly has not featured since picking up an injury in the second game of the season whilst Maddox has been missing since February following an operation on a foot injury in the summer.

The Glovers take on fifth-placed Boreham Wood, who have had an impressive return to the National League Premier Division this season, at Huish Park on Saturday looking to extend a run of three back-to-back victories.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah on Thursday, Dryden said: “Jacob Maddox and James Daly are both back in light training doing jogging and running, they have not kicked a ball yet, but they are getting there. They are the two big (injuries) so we will have the same sort of squad for Saturday.

It is hard to gauge when they will be available. Jacob has obviously been out for longer than James, they both look naturally fit, but being naturally fit and football fit are totally different things. We will take the medical department’s advice on that and ease them in.”

Midfielder Charlie Cooper is the other absentee having been missing since the 2-1 home win over Brackley Town in August with an Achilles tendon injury. Asked about his fitness, the manager added: “He is getting there, but as I said before Danny (Webb) came in, (Charlie) has got to be 100% to play. If he comes in at 90% he will drop back to 60%, so he has got to get around that.

A 2-1 win at Sutton United on Tuesday night saw Yeovil extend their winning run to three games and Dryden has been pleased with his players’ determination since being handed the manager’s job until the end of the season following the shock exit of Danny Webb.

He said: “I have been most proud of our resilience over the last three games, the desire to stop the ball going in to our net, that has been a big thing. I know we conceded at Sutton on Tuesday, but before that our players were throwing themselves in front of the ball blocking shots and it was a great finish from (Sutton’s Charlie Bell) there is no deny that. But our determination and resilience to win games makes me proud of this team.”

That victory followed a comfortable 4-1 victory at Aldershot Town and a hard-fought 1-0 win over Altrincham in the last outing at Huish Park last weekend. Dryden added: “They have all been different wins, we dominated the majority of the game (at Aldershot), had to dig in (against Altrincham) at home and I thought it was quite a complete performance (at Sutton) when we had to defend really well.

You are looking behind you (at the substitutes) when the lads are getting tired and we have got a good bench and bringing those fresh legs on when we did really helped, you definitely saw that especially in the last 20 minutes of the game when Harvey (Greenslade) and Ben (Wodskou) came on at the top of the pitch. They had to press, run with the ball, so it helps when you have a good bench as well.”

Striker Aaron Jarvis picked up his first goal of the season at Sutton having scored the 81st minute penalty which gave Yeovil the three points. It is the bearded frontman’s first goal since scoring in the 1-1 draw with Woking back in January.

Dryden was asked whether it was a relief to see Jarvis score, he replied: “I would not say a relief because when he is on the pitch, especially in the last three games, he has made a massive impact although he has not scored. I always go on about how Olivier Giroud won the World Cup with France without scoring a goal! (Jarvis) does other stuff as well, but he will be happy he has got his goal.”

Dryden has named the same starting XI for all three of the matches since he took over and admitted he has had to manage the amount his small squad has been asked to do in matches and training.

He said: “A lot if it is about squad management, we have done a little trip to the swimming pool, a little walk in it, but we all want to get back on the grass because the atmosphere is good. We will not be doing a lot but we need to work out our shape defensively and in attacking positions and from set plays with a bit of other stuff on Friday.”

Boreham Wood, who were promoted via the National League South play-off last season, are unbeaten since the opening day of the season and will offer a tough test for Yeovil’s impressive recent form. Visiting manager Luke Garrard returned to the helm at Meadow Park in September having quit the previous May following relegation to National League South and appears to be working his magic again.

Dryden said: “Luke has come back and got them going, he is Mr Boreham Wood. We have looked at how they are playing and we are working out a way how to hurt them and how to defend against them.

They keep the ball really well and try to suck you in to play through you and they have got a far bit of pace in certain areas as well. They are 12 games in now and the table is starting to take shape and they are in the play-off positions and the table does not lie after 12 games. From what I have been watching on the Wyscout (scouting tool) today, they can definitely be there for the rest of the season.

Yeovil Town return to Huish Park this Saturday to face fifth placed Boreham Wood in the National League.

FORM…

YEOVIL TOWN

The Glovers can confidently stake their claim as one of the in-form sides in the league. Over their last five games, Richard Dryden’s men have won four (whisper it quietly) and lost just once, the single game reign of former boss, Danny Webb.

It’s the last three matches, however, that have truly impressed. After the hiring and swift departure of a manager in just 10 days, no one would blame the players for being unsettled. Yet the performances and results have been anything but with three straight wins, Yeovil sit in tenth just two points off the play-off places,

In their most recent outing, the Somerset side delivered another solid display, overcoming a struggling Sutton United team under the lights. The Glovers came out on top with a 2-1 victory. The ever-impressive loanee, Andrew Oluwabori, opened the scoring, before Sutton pulled one back. But in the 81st minute, Aaron Jarvis calmly slotted home from the penalty spot after Josh Sims was brought down in the box.

BOREHAM WOOD

It has been an amazing return to life in the National League Premier Division for Boreham Wood. Last season’s National League South play-off winners are undefeated since losing to fellow high-fliers Rochdale on the opening day of the season.

With Luke Garrard in charge once again – the club legend quit after relegation in 2023-2024 but returned in September – they have put together a steady mix of wins and draws including three wins and two draws in their last five games.

The summer saw the long-serving Tyrone Marsh depart the club, but Garrard strengthened his squad with the arrivals of the likes of experienced wing-back Jeff King and midfielder Zak Brunt on loan from York City and Barnet respectively. Former Swindon Town striker Luke Norris was also recruited and started with four goals in his first three games before suffering an ankle injury which has seen him sidelined since early September. Both Norris and fellow long-term injury victim Jack Payne, the club’s player-assistant manager, are both expected to miss the trip to Somerset.

In midweek, they faced a strong Southend United side in a tightly contested affair that finished 1-1. Top scorer Matt Rush was on target with his sixth goal of the season.

Yeovil should also be wary of Boreham Wood’s ability to disrupt their opponents, as the Hertfordshire outfit have seen their opposition reduced to 10 men on four separate occasions this season.

KEY PLAYERS…

YEOVIL TOWN – Morgan Williams

The centre-back has been in top form over the past few weeks, delivering key defensive performances  and even chipping in with a goal. Amid the recent upheaval off the pitch, Williams has remained a constant, earning the trust of fans with his consistency.

Morgan Williams was the match winner against Altrincham last weekend. Picture courtesy of Gary Brown.

As a defender, he offers the full package for a National League centre-back. Comfortable on the ball and solid across any position in the back line, his defensive reliability has played a major role in Yeovil keeping three clean sheets in their last five games.

But it’s not just his work at the back that stands out. Williams is a regular threat from set pieces, having recently found the net against Altrincham last time out at Huish Park.

BOREHAM WOOD – Matt Rush

The forward has already netted six times in 12 appearances this season, including three goals in his last four outings. With 22 goals in 38 games for The Wood, Rush has proven himself to be a clinical and consistent finisher.

In recent matches, he’s led the line as a lone striker, with summer signing Luke Norris absent from the squad for the last four fixtures through injury. That shift in responsibility has sparked an upturn in form, as Rush continues to thrive as Boreham Wood’s primary attacking threat.

THE GAFFER…

Luke Garrard is nothing short of a Boreham Wood legend. After a playing career that saw him move between lower-league clubs, Garrard first joined The Wood in 2005 for a season before departing for Northwood FC. Following spells at Northwood and AFC Wimbledon, he returned to Meadow Park in 2010, where he spent six years before retiring as a player/manager.

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard.

Initially combining both roles, Garrard eventually took on the managerial position full-time. A true one-club manager, he has spent his entire coaching career at Boreham Wood. His first spell in charge lasted nine years and included 411 games. Though he stepped away in April 2024, he made a swift return just five months later in September and has overseen 53 games since.

LAST TIME WE MET…

Yeovil have not faced Boreham Wood since the final day of the 2022-2023 campaign when a Tyrone Marsh goal saw the Glovers’ time in the National League Premier finish with a defeat as we were relegated to the South.

The last meeting at Huish Park came in September 2022 and finished in a 1-1 draw. Alex Fisher found the net for the Glovers, while Jack Payne, now assistant manager to Garrard, scored for Boreham Wood.

DON’T I KNOW YOU…

There are no players in the Boreham Wood squad who have previously featured in the home dressing room at Huish Park. The Glovers’ Junior Morias and Charlie Cooper both had spells at Meadow Park though, so they will be familiar to the away fans at least.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE…

The referee for Saturday’s match is Niall Smith. Read more here.

Finn Cousin-Dawson attempts to win the ball.

Yeovil Town defender/midfielder (or quite frankly whatever/wherever you need him to be), Finn Cousin-Dawson says that the key to maintaining the recent success is to take things one step at a time.

Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset’s Jack Killah he said the team is feeling good following a busy spell;

“Obviously it’s really tough week or so with three games in I don’t know how many days, but yeah, recovered well. So, yeah, feeling good.”

“I think [the manager change] brought us really together as a group and I think you can see that in the results and the way we’re playing. You know, we’re  fighting for each other, we’re running for each other and yeah, morale’s been good.
I just think work rate. I think if you go in every game working as hard as you can, working hard in the team, then you give yourself a good chance to win a game, and with the quality we’ve got in  the the forwards of the team, then we’re always going to score goals.

[It has] just given the front lads a bit of freedom. I think, not that there wasn’t before. I think we’ve kind of I think we’ve just maybe clicked a bit more.”

With Boreham Wood visiting on Saturday, FC-D said that it’s important that Huish Park is loud to make it a tough place for any side to visit.

“They’ve obviously come up and uh done well this year, but it’s like every other team in this league. There’s no easy game. Nobody’s going to let you have three points. So it’s just like every other game going with a mindset of we’re going to win the game.

I think when the when the crowd come and they’re loud, then it’s a really hard place to come for away team.

Yeah, definitely. But for me, it’s just we just got to look at Saturday, you know, look at the next game, try to win that. If not, you go again the week after. But you just got to take it game by game.”

Finn Cousin-Dawson prepared to launch a pass forward.
Finn Cousin-Dawson. Picture courtesy of Mike Kunz.

On his own role in the side, he said that adapting to midfield responsibilities hasn’t been easy, but that so long as he’s in the side, he’ll give everything for the cause.

“I just enjoy playing, probably more comfortable as a centre half, you know, I’m still learning obviously, I’m learning on a job in midfield, but wherever I’m asked to play, I’m going to give 100%. So, it doesn’t change that.
[I’ve played in midfield] maybe a couple times, maybe two, three times. Yeah, that’s it. Obviously started last season um just kind of in there to break a lot of play up and try to keep it simple.
Obviously this year being a bit in and out, probably found it a bit harder at the start, but no, I enjoy both.

I’d probably say we’re all quite different in a way. Obviously Macca, Brett, Coops, whoever’s been in there, all really good players, so yeah, it’s good. It’s good healthy competition. So I think whoever’s in there have done a good job this season and we’re all working hard for each other. “

Andrew Oluwabori has been named your Gloverscast Player of the Month for September.

Despite only being in the voting from the Tamworth game, he picked up eight points and two individual Man of the Match awards (vs Aldershot and Altrincham)

Which means, despite being on the same number of points as Jed Ward, he gets the nod on MOTM Countback.

As a reminder, All MOTM winners are awarded 3 points towards a monthly total, second gets two, third gets one with any ties settled by the number of individual first places they get.

Ward, who won the August title finishes second with eight points and one MOTM, whilst Josh Sims finishes third despite he and Luke McCormick getting seven points each – Sims was MOTM twice.

Three wins in a row for Richard Dryden’s Glovers! Ian and Ben welcome Ollie Marsh back on the Gloverscast to talk through the 2-1 win over Sutton and the impact Richard Dryden is having. We look ahead a bit and take your GCQs.

Thank you to Dan Franklyn and the car full of Essex Glovers for the voice note!

Andrew Oluwabori has been named in the National League team of the midweek after his match defining performance against Sutton on Tuesday.

His opening goal gave the Glovers a first half advantage and the first step towards a third straight win.

Yeovil Town’s Interim Manager Richard Dryden has been nominated for the league’s September Manager of the Month award.

The official website says the following:

Richard Dryden (Yeovil Town)

Penny for the thoughts of Yeovil Town fans last month after Danny Webb was appointed, and resigned after just a few days. But Richard Dryden provided the calm amid the chaos. He won his game as a caretaker before Webb’s arrival and was handed the job full-time the moment he left.Three brilliant wins suggest things happen for a reason.

W 1-0 Woking
W 4-1 Aldershot Town
W 1-0 Altrincham
W 2-1 Sutton United

It’s worth noting that he was also in charge for the 1-0 away win at Solihull Moors also and that performance deserves a nod of appreciation.

Dryden has been nominated along side Robert Savage (FGR) Luke Garrard (Boreham Wood) and Jimmy McNulty (Rochdale).

It is our opinion that the National League should take into consideration the context that has surrounded the club and award the final trophy to Richard Dryden.

Great stuff, Richard!

Ref, Referee, Match Official

The Glovers are back at Huish Park this Saturday with Boreham Wood the visitors to Somerset.

Our referee for this game is Mr Niall Smith, who we have seen before, but only a couple of times. Back in May he took charge of the Glovers’ 2-1 defeat away at Aldershot, taking the name of Harry Kite on that occasion.

Roll back to the National League South title winning season and he also oversaw the 1-0 victory over Taunton, a single Frank Nouble goal the difference with Jordan Young, Jake Wannell and Michael Smith all going in the book.

This season, he’s taken charge of three games at this level, yet to brandish a red card, but the yellow one has made an appearance or 15 – but that did include a rather spicy game between Altrincham and Aldershot which had eight.

Marcus Carmichael and Thomas Holden have flag duties as assistant, Said Ouchene is marshalling the dug outs.
