March 2024 (Page 3)

A Frank Nouble flicked header was enough to seal three pints at Braintree Town yesterday. Dave was in the away end in Essex and here’s what he made of it all….

What a win:
Do not underestimate the importance of the three points we picked up in Essex. With many questioning whether we were wobbling and Braintree in fine form – 14 unbeaten having not lost since New Year’s Day – getting our first win in three matches cannot be underestimated. Yes, it could have been even better had Taunton not screwed up against Chelmsford, but just think how things would have looked if we hadn’t won.

Frank deserved that: If there was one player who deserved to be the hero yesterday, for me it was Frank Nouble. He’s looked out of sorts during our recent stumble, but he was absolutely everywhere against Braintree. He never gave them a moment’s peace and his goal was a masterpiece straight off the training ground.

Genesini looks a gem: The loss of Michael Smith is huge and not even Brooklyn Genesini’s biggest fan would claim he is a like-for-like replacement but, on this performance, he is not a bad one. Thought he looked energetic and rarely beaten by his man. An honourable mention for Charlie Cooper (yes, I hear you call me a ‘fanboy’) but yet again he was there to do the dirty stuff and we controlled things as a result.

Clarke never got in to it: Jahmari Clarke has all the attributes to be an effective striker. Tall, powerful, obvious skill on the ball, but this really was not his day. For someone of his stature he did not ruffle too many feathers in a very diminutive Braintree backline which looked to struggle with balls in to the box. Olly Thomas on the other hand looked a real handful when he came off the bench. With so many games coming up in a short space of time, we are going to need them all.

It was an anonymous performance from Jahmari Clarke.

Just keep grinding: This was not pretty, it didn’t need to be pretty, it needed to be three points. Nouble’s first goal in two months, another clean sheet and a big W, all this against a Braintree side whose form before Saturday cannot be underestimated even if they seemed off colour yesterday. Six games left, nine points needed to seal the title. Just keep grinding them out, boys.

Yeovil Town full-back Alex Whittle will play no further part in the National League South campaign having been ruled out through injury.

The 31-year-old, who has made 40 appearances this season, has been ruled out for the next four months with a hamstring injury he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Slough Town last weekend.

Posted on X on Saturday, Whittle said: “Gutted to be missing the remainder of the season with injury , let’s get behind the lads for the final push.

Frank Nouble scored the winning goal at Braintree, and he praised the travelling supporters, saying they deserved the victory.

‘The Governor’ was on post-match media duties with BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins and the goalscorer said: “They [the fans] deserve it. Every time we don’t win for them – especially away games – it’s difficult to look at them in the eye and, you know, give him a clap for the effort they’ve done. But also, it’s football, we can’t win every game, so it’s nice to give them something today. The sun is out so they can enjoy a little beverage after the game and hopefully get home safe. It’s all about the supporters. I think when you win games for your club it means everything.”

After a four without a win, Nouble said the victory felt amazing: “I can’t remember the last time we won. Which is weird saying that this season. But you know, we’ve had some indifferent results of late. So it just felt good to get that win today. And yeah, it was enjoyable, good battle. And I thought they’re a good team, obviously doing well for a reason and showed it out there. But, I think some parts of the game, we reminded ourselves that we are level above, we just gotta go out there and re-prove that to everyone else.”

It was a set-piece that won it, and Nouble said Chris Todd has been showing the Glovers some inspiration from the Gunners. “Toddy will tell you that we’ve worked on that all week. We changed it up a little bit. Watching some of the Arsenal set pieces so I don’t know if I should be saying that, but we did watch some, you know, ways of scoring some set pieces because we are a big side in terms of height, but that means nothing if you don’t go out and attack the ball. So, you know, lucky enough I got on the end of one today.”

The Glovers are thin on the ground at the back, with Alex Whittle out for the remainder of the season and no indication of when Michael Smith could be back. Nouble admitted they’re big misses in the team, but that the squad is really close and peeled the curtain back a bit.

“I think everyone’s got a role to play, You know, It’s just like the school days, you know, in a school classroom, everyone has different characters, and we all try to fit in together. There’s a class clown, there’s people who are too busy and want to do everything by the book, there’s naughty boys, stuff like that. And there’s a governor, I’m the governor of the group, so I’ve gotta make sure everyone is on it and I think we’ve done a good job.

“Everyone played their role brilliantly. Regardless, if you’re playing or not you see the boys don’t play, they’re doing their runs after the game and that means a lot to everyone. We don’t want to see anyone down if they’re not playing, not involved – they’re so important. So we’re really lucky that the group has been quite tight knit and it’s all down to the manager if I’m being honest.”

Yeovil head into a big Easter weekend needing three victories to clinch promotion, and Nouble said the players won’t need much motivation ahead of the visit of Torquay: “There should be no motivational speeches before that game. Just go out there and play. Be yourself and that should be good enough.”

Mark Cooper being interviewed after the 1-0 win at Braintree

Yeovil picked up a 1-0 win over Braintree this afternoon thanks to a Frank Nouble set piece goal. The hosts were on an 14-match unbeaten run before the Glovers visit and Mark Cooper said the travelling fans got his team over the line.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, the boss said: “That bond is strong – between fans and supporters – and it’s been a long time at the club since it’s been like that. It’s important that we keep showing them our appreciation for their travel and at home as well. And they got us over the line in the end.”

The Iron have had a good run, and Cooper was complimentary of the opponents, but acknowledged that Joe Day had a quiet afternoon in between the sticks.

“They’re a really good team. Really well organised. But, we were really sound and structured today. I think if you look at Joe Day. [He] didn’t have lots to do, did he? I can’t recall him making any saves. [He] caught some crosses.”

Frank Nouble’s 14th minute header was the difference between 1st and 3rd place on the afternoon and it was yet another set piece that the Glovers capitalised on. Cooper said: “We’ve scored lots of set pieces this year and that’s another one and they’re vital, if you’re going to try and win things it’s vital that you score lots of set pieces.”

The boss also praised Jordan Young, who’s form has dropped off in recent weeks. “He lost his way a little bit and probably didn’t work as hard. I don’t care who you are and what level you are at. You have to work socks off and you watch the best teams, they sprint and run and if you do that then you start getting your breaks again and Youngy did that today and he was outstanding.”

With Chelmsford scoring two late goals to win 3-2 at Taunton, Yeovil (if results go their way) could win the title at home to Worthing, but before that Easter brings fixtures with Torquay and Weymouth and although the manager admitted he’s looking at the table now, he stuck to the party line: “Game by game. Boring.”

It was a hard-fought win for Yeovil Town, but still a win over a Braintree Town side in third place in the National League South table having not lost since the turn of the year.

Who was your hero in green-and-white at the Rare Breed Meats Scrapyard?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

A first half Frank Nouble goal was enough to get Yeovil Town back to winning ways with a hard-fought win at Braintree Town.

The striker flicked in a near post header to give the visitors a 14th minute lead at a side which had not lost in National League South action since New Year’s Day.

The three points maintain a seven-point advantage at the top of the league after Taunton Town capitulated to defeat to second-placed Chelmsford City.

First half

The kick-off was delayed by the notable absence of Braintree keeper Jack Sims, who disappeared pre-kick-off, only appearing at 3.05pm. <Add reference to non-League here>

The opening 15 minutes were lacking in goalmouth action with Jahmari Clarke having a half chance and a couple of balls in to the Yeovil box, but the first meaningful attempt led to the opening goal. A flicked header from Frank NOUBLE directed the ball past Sims after 14 minutes.

But, at the other end, Shaq Coulthirst spurned a glorious opportunity when he put a point blank header from a Lewis Miccio straight in to the hands of Joe Day with 16 minutes gone.

It took another 20 minutes before there was any meaningful action and that consisted of a ball in to the box by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and a blocked shot from Charlie Cooper.

At the other end, the clearest cut opportunity fell to Miccio lifted an effort over the bar after Freddie Sears had looked dangerous inside the box.

Half time: Braintree Town 0 Yeovil Town 1

Second half

A cagey start to the second half produced about the same amount of action as the first. On 52 minutes, Aaron Blair took advantage of a loose bit of play by Matt Worthington but lifted his shot over the bar.

Substitute Jayden Davis fizzed a shot just over the bar  after 57 minutes.

Olly Thomas replaced Jahmari Clarke with an hour gone and in his first involvement he ran on to a ball forward after a powerful run from the effervescent Nouble.

From then on, there was pressure from the home side but without forcing a meaningful stop out of Day.

On 84 minutes it looked like Yeovil were about to go 2-0 up when a beautiful cross from the left Dylan Morgan found Jordan Young in the middle of the box, seemingly certain to head home. To his credit, Sims pulled off a stunning save to turn the ball over the bar.

Aside from a flurry of bookings for the visitors, there was little to talk about from the final stages of the game, except to say we saw it out.

The final whistle felt massive and even the fact Taunton threw away a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 at home to second-placed Chelmsford could not extinguish the fire which will undoubtedly be sparked back in to this Yeovil side.

It was not pretty, but it was a massive three points. Do not underestimate how massive it was.

Yeovil Town will play their fixture against Truro City at National League North side Gloucester City on April 11th.

The Cornish side have confirmed they will play all their remaining ‘home’ fixtures on the artificial surface at Meadow Park, a full 195 miles away from their home town.

In a statement, Truro said: “The unprecedented rainfall that has affected the South West over the past weeks has been the catalyst for this decision, to ensure that our home fixture fulfilment needs are met.

As with every decision that has been made regarding venues for home matches since the turn of the year, it was not one taken lightly, but with the club’s best short-term interests in mind.”

The game is the Glovers’ game in hand over second-placed Chelmsford City.

On loan Yeovil Town striker Malachi Linton’s season is over after he was ruled out for 12 weeks with an injury.

The former Wycombe Wanderers frontman, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been on loan with W*ymouth since the start of January abe has scored five times.

In a statement to the Seagull Botherers’ supporters, he said: “My time has been short and sweet. I was happy to wear the shirt and gave my all every time I put it on. I’m thankful to the manager for giving me the opportunity, thankful to the players and staff for being welcoming and helping me settle in quickly and the fans for their support home and away. I have faith that Bobby and the boys will finish on a high and I wish the club nothing but the best for the future!
