Yeovil Town return to league action on Saturday as they travel to Worthing in the National League South.

Fresh from completing a cupset against Southend United last week, the Glovers will be hoping to keep their seven-game winning run going.

Worthing’s storming start to the season – which saw them win five of their first six games.- has waned somewhat, but they still sit in the play-off spots.

Mark Cooper’s side will have to contend with a *surface that shall not be named* at the snappily-named Sussex Transport Community Stadium, as they search for their first win of the season on the non-traditional green stuff.

Yeovil Town News

Cooper has been doing his research on the Rebels, who he described as a “pure football team”.

He said: “They are a team with good players in it and, as I say every week, we will do our homework and give them due respect and make sure we are ready to be really good without the ball but stick to our principles and what we are doing.

“We will train on the 3G (surface at Huish Park) tomorrow (Friday). We obviously have a disadvantage, there’s no hiding the fact that those teams who play on (a 3G surface) have a distinct advantage, it’s their own (surface) and every one is different.

“But we can’t use that as an excuse, we have to find a way and we will try and do that. We all know what we think of them, but we’ve just got to get on with it.”

With the boss saying that he has “the same group” of players that beat Southend, it’s assumed that we’ll be travelling without the injured pair of Charlie Cooper and Jamie Sendles-White.

New signing Sonny Cox, who arrived on loan from Exeter City earlier in the week, will be available for selection.

Worthing News

Worthing gaffer Adam Hinshelwood signed a new long-term contract on Thursday, having headed up the Mackerel Men for just shy of a decade.

Speaking to Worthing’s website, the 39-year-old said: “I’m still very ambitious, and, with the talks we’ve had, it looks like the club is as well.”

His side will be without Joe Felix, who is serving a three-match ban after seeing red in the 2-2 draw against Truro.

However, their squad has been boosted by the return of midfielder Jesse Starkey, and defender Liam Vincent, who has joined on loan from Portsmouth for the second time in as many seasons.

Both players got their first minutes of the campaign in midweek, in an impressive Sussex Senior Cup performance which saw the Mackerel Men beat League Two Crawley Town 6-2.

Following that victory, Hinshelwood said: “There are players that have been waiting for that opportunity and it’s definitely made my job really tough now trying to pick a team for Saturday because the lads done brilliantly.

“I think we’ve got players this season in attack that can really hurt the opposition. Bailey (Smith) with his pace and Joan Luque is some player, he really is.

“It’s a real big week and it feels like they’ve come together, really fancied it, really rolled up their sleeves and want to be part of the big games this week.”

Worthing are proudly wearing the badge of ‘highest-ranking non-league side in Sussex’, and a scalp against Glovers this weekend would be another sign of their progression.

“Obviously Yeovil are at the top of the league and in the Championship not long ago so it’s not going to be an easy game and we’ve got to be up for it.

“We have to really play with our intensity and if we can bring that, with the quality we possess, I really feel that we can be a handful this year.”

Yeovil Town boss Mark Cooper is hoping to take advantage of the “risks at the back” taken by this weekend’s opponents Worthing.

He described them as “as a pure football side” but clearly believes there are areas which his table-topping side can exploit when they travel to West Sussex.

The Rebels sit in fifth place after a winning six of their first eight National League South matches, but have drawn two and lost one of their last three.

Asked about his side’s next opponents in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Cooper said: “They are a pure football team and try and play it, they take a lot of risks at the back with the goalkeeper.

They are a team with good players in it and, as I say every week, we will do our homework and give them due respect and make sure we are ready to be really good without the ball but stick to our principles and what we are doing.

Asked about the artificial surface at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium – in a clear violation of the latest Gloverscast rule – the boss said his side would train on the artificial surface at Huish Park on Friday before travelling to the South Coast.

Their only two defeats of the campaign have come on non-grass surface at Hemel Hempstead Town on the opening day of the season and then at Havant & Waterlooville on August Bank Holiday.

Cooper said: “We will train on the 3G (surface at Huish Park) tomorrow (Friday). We obviously have a disadvantage, there’s no hiding the fact that those teams who play on (a 3G surface) have a distinct advantage, it’s their own (surface) and every one is different.

But we can’t use that as an excuse, we have to find a way and we will try and do that. We all know what we think of them, but we’ve just got to get on with it.”

Charlie Cooper is still expected to be missing this weekend.

The manager said that he had “the same group” of players available as last weekend’s 2-0 home win over Southend United in the FA Cup.

Then he was without midfielder Charlie Cooper and defender Jamie Sendles-White, the latter having been missing with an Achilles problem he picked up at the start of September.

Unfortunately, if you wanted to know anything about the progress of Cooper or Sendles-White or even the arrival on loan of Exeter City striker Sonny Cox there were no questions asked about the new arrival in the press conference. *face, palm*

Cooper spoke positively about the performance of his central defensive pairing Morgan Williams and Jake Wannell during the win over Southend.

The pair combined to keep the National League Premier’s joint-second top-scorer, Harry Cardwell, off the scoresheet with Wannell also weighing in with his fourth goal of the season courtesy of a stunning opener.

He said: “We spoke a while back about partnerships and trying to improve those relationships in the team. Morgan (Williams) and Jake (Wannell), Morgs is really quick and Jake is really aggressive so when Jake is winning headers, Morgs can cover with his pace and we have got a really good balance between them.

We have done a lot of work structuring at the back of the pitch and making sure we are really organised without the ball and it is starting to show.

The Glovers were drawn at home against another National League Premier outfit, Gateshead, in the FA Cup First Round Proper.

The Tyneside outfit lost 3-1 in their visit to Huish Park in September 2022, but exacted revenge in the reverse fixture in April with a scintillating performance in a 4-0 win as Yeovil plunged towards relegation.

Asked about the opponents, Cooper said: “I know they are the best footballing team I have seen in the National League this season having watched a few of their games. We beat them here and then we went up there and they destroyed us when we were in freefall, turmoil as a club.

But the way they played was very impressive and I have watched some of their games (this season) and they are the best pure football team in the National League.

Gateshead lost manager Mike Williamson who took the manager’s job at League Two side MK Dons this week following the sacking of Graham Alexander.

On that departure, Cooper added: “Obviously they have lost their manager because he has done really well and we will see now whether there’s any disruption to their set up. Subconsciously it will effect their players because they may be wondering whether he will come on get them.

On paper it is a really tough tie but I am sure they will be looking at us and thinking that is a difficult tie. They have to travel seven hours to Somerset and play against a team that is unbeaten at home and flying.

If you’re interested in Cooper’s view on ex-Yeovil player Tom Knowles, now with Walsall (sorry, Ian) being tripped by Gillingham boss Keith Millen, listen to the end of the press conference which you can watch here.

Following on from the news of the rescheduled date for the Glovers trip to Bath two more dates have been etched into the diary.

Firstly, as a result of progress to the first round of the FA Cup, Yeovil’s trip to Dartford needed a new date. This has now been confirmed as a 7.45pm kick off on Tuesday 19th December.

Secondly, the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup tie vs Clevedon was originally meant to clash with the first team’s trip to Torquay during Week Commencing 6th of November.

To avoid that clash, it’s been brought forward a week, now taking place on Wednesday 1st of November – please note that is a 7.30 kick off.

Yeovil Town have announced the signing of Exeter City forward Sonny Cox on a loan deal until January.

This is not the Grecians’ forwards first foray into the National League South, with a spell at Bath already on his CV.

He’s also spent time at Weston-super-Mare on loan too.

This season, he’s played a total of 13 times across League One and Cup for his parent club.

The 19-year old links up with the Glovers ahead of this week’s trip to Worthing.

Welcome to Huish Park, Sonny!

Yeovil’s away trip to Bath City has been rearranged for Tuesday 5th December (19:45 ko)

All tickets purchased for the original date are still valid, and the tickets will be back on sale ‘soon’. Why not book the day off and take in a Christmas market or something?

The original date was moved after the Glover’s storming FA Cup run, which continues with Gateshead on the Saturday 4th November, which has moved our trip to Dartford on a date to be determined.

It’s becoming a regular occurrence, another Yeovil player makes the official Vanarama team of the week.

But, when you’re a centre half and you thrash a 2nd minute goal into the back of the net against higher division opposition… what do you expect?

Jake Wannell listed below, with some others who also did good things in the FA Cup.

Well we made it past Southend and Gateshead await! Ian, Dave and Ben talk through the impressive 2-0 win over the Shrimpers and take your questions.

Yeovil Town will host National League side Gateshead in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.

The Tyneside team sit in sixth place after the opening two months of the season and went down 3-1 in their last visit to Huish Park – but also thumped Mark Copper’s side 4-0 in the North East as they plummeted to relegation.

The tie will be played on Saturday, November 4 meaning the National League South match at Dartford will need to be rearranged.

Yeovil booked their place with a 2-0 win over Southend United in the fourth qualifying round at Huish Park on Saturday thanks to goals from Jake Wannell and Jordan Young.

The draw was made by former Manchester United full-back Paul Parker and Jobi McAnuff, a former Wimbledon and Leyton Orient midfielder, on ITV1 on Sunday afternoon.

Well, qualifying for the FA Cup has concluded, and Yeovil are one of many that find themselves in the hat! With a fabulous 2-0 win over a talented Southend United side, let’s have a look at how the other NLS sides fared in their ties, as well as taking a look at the three league fixtures that took place yesterday.

We start in Essex, where last week’s visitors Aveley took on National League challengers Barnet. The hosts found themselves 2-0 down within twenty minutes (much like last week!) before getting a goal back before half time. They grabbed a 90th minute equaliser courtesy of Jon Benton, but not before going down to nine men, the 2-2 score line leading to a replay on Tuesday 17th October. Another tie between an NLS and National League side was Boreham Wood hosting Welling United. The visitors gave it their all, but ultimately fell short of making the first round for the first time since 2015/16.

Another replay for a NLS side will be played out by Braintree Town, who played out a 0-0 stalemate with Chesham United. In a not-so-southern section tie, Chelmsford City face a 9 hour round trip on Tuesday to Whitby Town, as they played out a 2-2 draw, coming from 2 goals down to prevent an upset. Dover Athletic weren’t so lucky, falling to a 1-0 defeat away to National League side Eastleigh, while two more replays were set up, with National League side Ebbsfleet United finding themselves in a replay with Slough Town. The NLS side took the lead twice, but Rohan Luthra scored 2 own goals to cut his own side’s lead and set up the replay, while Hemel Hempstead played out a 0-0 draw to set up a replay with ex-Glovers manager Darren Sarll’s Woking.

Our first all-NLS tie comes in the shape of Torquay United hosting Maidstone, replaying their league fixture from last week. The visitors left victorious once again, thanks to September’s NLS Player of the Month, Levi Amantchi’s double. Weston-super-mare struggled at home to National League opposition, as Maidenhead United coasted to a 3-0 victory. The second all-NLS tie was another mouth-watering tie, with Worthing hosting Bath City. It was the hosts who would take the tie, a quickfire Danny Cashman double booking their place in the first round.

There were three National League South fixtures to look at, and we’ll start with the obvious candidate for the best of the three. Hampton & Richmond played out a classic with Dartford, a 92nd minute winner from ex-Glover Jake Gray handing the hosts a 4-3 victory to kick-start their season. Farnborough would seal their first win without their top goalscorer Alfie Pavey since his move to Woking, as they defeated St Albans at home, winning 2-1. And in the final match of the day, W*ymouth and Tonbridge Angels stuttered to a 1-1 win, a result that doesn’t benefit either side.

As mentioned above, replays will take place on Tuesday 17th October, while the 1st Round draw will take place today (Sunday 15th October) on ITV at 2:30pm – League 1 and League 2 sides enter the competition, posing opportunities for even more shocks!
