Jordan Young admits the confidence of being at the heart of a Yeovil Town side on a nine-match winning run is doing wonders for his performance.

The forward scored his sixth of the season – unless it gets ruled to be an own goal – in the 2-0 home win over W*ymouth in front of a National League South record attendance of 6,289 on Tuesday night.

Young bent in a free-kick which he told BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins was “on target” but did appear to come off visiting defender Anthony Cheshire on his way in to the net and admitted his hard work in training was paying off.

The 24-year-old said: “It is something I work on in training and it’s really paying off. I can’t really explain what happened last year, it was obviously a difficult time for everyone and I’m a confidence player and as soon as the Gaffer gave me my place, I did the best I could and thankfully it is paying off.

The performance is great, but getting the three points is all that really matters. We want to keep building at the top of the table and keep going.”

Having gone ahead after just eight minutes, the Glovers had oportunities to go further ahead before the break, but allowed the visitors the opportunity to come back in to it after the break.

Young added: “It helps that we prepare right, start games fast and score early which is always good and it’s almost like we need to apply the pressure. We are creating chances and on another day we could have won 4-0.

First half we were really good and should have gone in a couple up and then in the second half at 1-0 it is always going to be difficult. They came out really good and it’s a derby so they are always going to be up for it, but luckily we stuck in there and got the goal at the end.

Yeovil now go in to Saturday’s home match with Braintree Town looking to make it ten wins in a row (11 including the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup) and Young admits the competition for places in the squad is driving up performance levels.

He added: “The buzz in the changing rooms is there and it feels like every game we go in to we could win it. With the Saturday and Tuesday schedule, it is massive that we have the players we do and we everyone coming on has made an impact now.

Yeovil Town boss Mark Cooper admitted his side have got a taste for special nights like the one which saw them beat local rivals W*ymouth 2-0 at Huish Park tonight.

The Glovers set a National League South attendance record with a crowd of 6,289 which saw goals from Jordan Young (quite possibly and own goal) and Jake Hyde stretch the club’s winning run to nine and lift them four points clear at the top of the table.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins after the game, Cooper said: “It was a horrible evening as well, wasn’t it? I feel sorry for those W*ymouth fans stood behind the goal (little snigger), but it was a special night and we want more of that.

The boys want to play in front of that every week if they can but to do that we have to keep winning games.

We’ve got to take it game by game and we certainly won’t take anything for granted, Braintree (who visit Huish Park on Satuerday) have won again tonight and are on a good run and they will come here and fancy their chances, so we have to be ready for them.

Having gone in 1-0 down at the break, the visitors – who drop to 18th after their sixth defeat of the season – rallied in the second half and spurned gilt-edged opportunities to put the game to bed before Hyde sealed the win in second half stoppage time.

The boss added: “First half we were really controlled and dominant and should have put it to bed, we were a little bit casual, it became a bit easy for them rather than getting right to the action.

Then second half, Bobby (Wilkinson, the W*ymouth manager) has got right in to them at half-time and they have come out and had a right good go at it.

They had five up front at one point and they have had a couple breaks inside the box and Joe Day has made a good save and then we have got a second at the end to kill it. But listen, derby matches are really competitive and never easy to win but it was just about getting the result.”

Jake Hyde, appeared after 70 minutes on Tuesday night.

Hyde was one of two substitutes made by Cooper after 70 minutes as he replaced top scorer Rhys Murphy and fellow forward Frank Nouble with the experienced frontman and Sonny Cox, the teenage striker signed on loan from Exeter City last week.

The manager added: “We have a group of good players who want to try and achieve something and we make sure that when we bring players on they add to the group.

We have brought another one in Sonny Cox who looks a real livewire with his movement inside the box. If you are bringing Rhys Murphy and Frank Nouble off and bringing Jake Hyde and Sonny Cox on you have got a chance to get some goals.

I am pleased for Hydey to get that goal in front of the Thatchers as well.

Saturday’s home match with Braintree Town marks 12 months since Cooper was appointed to replace Chris Hargreaves with the club struggling at the wrong end of the National League Premier.

Having lost only two of his first ten matches, off-the-field tensions with began to spill on to the pitch as the on-off takeover by ‘stewards’ SU Glovers faltered before collapsing with the disastrous run of form which coincided with the turmoil leading to relegation last season.

Asked about his first year, Cooper said: “When I first came in, I felt we had enthusiasm and a brilliant start and we lost maybe one game in ten or eleven games and then things happen and there was a new group came in and signed players that were not right for the football club in my opinion.

The second part was it turned toxic and I got quite a lot of blame for that and I am the manager so I carry the can for that, but I think people now can see maybe it wasn’t all about me.

We have come a long way but we have achieved nothing yet. I am really enjoying my time, the fans have been brilliant this year and we need to keep going and keep riding that wave together.

As ever, Mark Cooper also spoke to the club’s YouTube channel covering many of the same things.

Yeovil took their unbeaten run to nine in a row, in front of a National League South record crowd of 6289.

Jordan Young’s free kick found its way into the bottom corner of the net in the first half and Jake Hyde’s stoppage time goal clinched it as the Glovers retained their place at the top of the league against W*ymouth…

Here’s how it unfolded in the rain at Huish Park.

First half

Mark Cooper made one change to his starting lineup with Jordan Stevens replacing Will Dawes on the wing.

A shot from Matt Worthington was saved by Hugo Fisher in the W*ymouth goal after seven minutes.

And the Glovers took the lead shortly after as Jordan Young’s free kick was looped into a dangerous area and seemed to take a deflection on its way into the net. 1-0.

Yeovil were largely on top controlling possession and putting pressure on the W*ymouth defence. Neat interplay between Jordan Young and Stevens saw a couple efforts at goal in quick succession, with Stevens dragging his shot wide.

Yeovil were getting a lot of joy on the right hand side and Young played in Michael Smith who put a dangerous cross into the box that Stevens couldn’t connect with cleanly.

There was real pinball in the box half an hour in, with Frank Nouble having a shot charged down and W*ymouth scrambling to clear their lines.

Yeovil had more joy down the right hand side with Stevens putting a delicate cross into the box with Nouble going for glory with what would have been a spectacular volley.

Moments later, an excellent tackle from Cheshire prevented Rhys Murphy from getting a strike at goal.

The pressure continued on the right hand side and Michal Smith was next to have an effort blocked in front of the Seagull Botherer’s goal.

Josh Owers picked up yellow card for a cynical challenge on a W*ymouth player as they broke forward.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 W*ymouth 0

Second half

W*ymouth had a half chance with an effort from Dan Robert’s that was easy for Joe Day.

Then the Glovers pressure began. Jordan Stevens had a hopeful effort that he skied high and wide.

Rhys Murphy had yet another penalty appeal turned down as he was checked in the box, one of these days he might get one.

The pressure continue with W*ymouth having to block shots on the edge of 18-yard-box which culminated in Jake Wannell heading wide.

W*ymouth had a great opportunity to draw level as Calvin Brooks rose above everyone from a corner, but headed over the bar.

The visitors had another decent effort from a free kick on the edge of the box that was drilled low into the hands of Day.

Frank Nouble very nearly doubled Yeovil’s lead in the 66th minute with a near post header that looked goalbound until a Weymouth intervention.

Mark Cooper made a double change in the 70th minute with Sonny Cox making his debut in place of Murphy and Jake Hyde replacing Nouble.

Somehow W*ymoth didn’t equalise moments later. They crafted a great chance in the box and Roberts slid in a la Gazza in 1996 and couldn’t poke it home.

Cox almost made an impact with his first touch, striking a left footed effort low that was saved well by Fisher in front of the Thatchers.

Moments later there was another gilt-edged chance for the visitors with Touray somehow missing.

As the Glovers were rocking a bit, the announcement was made that Yeovil has broken the National League South attendance record with 6289 inside Huish Park.

Will Dawes, who came on for Stevens, thought he’d grabbed a second goal with a lovely finish, however the referee penalised Hyde for a handball.

The game reached its conclusion, both sides tried to break each other down and Jake Hyde scored a stoppage time second to clinch a ninth win in a row. 2-0

Yeovil Town have made one change from the weekend’s 2-1  win at Worthing for the visit of W*ymouth to Huish Park (7.45pm kick-off).

Jordan Stevens replaces Will Dawes who went off injured at the weekend.

Dawes is named among the substitutes alongside striker Sonny Cox, who joined on loan from Exeter City last week.

Yeovil Town Goalkeeper Will Buse has joined Bath City on loan for a month.

Buse, 22, who joined the club on a permanent deal after a loan stint at Huish Park last season has made half a dozen appearances for the Glovers before falling behind Joe Day in the pecking order.

It means that the Glovers have two goalkeepers out on loan with Lewis Williams currently with Tiverton Town.

Yeovil Town will want to carry on their good form on Tuesday night as they play host to local rivals W*ymouth in the National League South.

The Glovers are currently on an eight game winning streak, and three points against The Terras could see them potentially open a six point gap on second place Bath City.

Weymouth will be a tough proposition for the Somerset side as they haven’t lost in the league since the fifth of September. However they have only won two of their last five league games.

Yeovil Town News

Mark Coopers men have looked dangerous over the last 10 games and their current form is up there with the best in Europe. Another win for the Somerset team will see them join the likes of Fenerbahce and PSV Eindhoven on a nine game winning streak.

The in form player for Yeovil has been striker Rhys Murphy, who after rejoining the club in the summer has gone on to score six goals in twelve games.

Another player who has found form in the early part of the season is Jordan Young. The young forward, who joined in January, found it difficult to adjust to life in the National League. However the Scotsman has relished his role playing off the wing or in behind the striker so far this campaign.

Yeovil have no new injuries or suspensions to worry about, however Murphy and Alex Whittle both sit on four yellow cards so will need to be careful.

W*ymouth Team News

Weymouth will be relishing the chance to get one over their bitter rivals, especially if it means putting an end to Yeovil’s incredible run of form.

Manager Bobby Wilkinson has called on his supporters to make themselves heard at Huish Park. He said: “ The fans have always been a 12th man since the day I came in… I’m calling on the fans to be loud and proud.”

Wilkinson feels his team will have to play “good football” to get the fans going and “will try everything to make them proud on the night”.

The key man for the South coast side will be striker Dan Roberts who found himself in the National League South side team of the week for his performance against Eastbourne Borough.

Another player of note for The Terras is 19-year-old Italian forward Ezio Touray, who has impressed since joining. The ex-Watford player has scored three goals in four games so far this season.

The ex-Bracknell boss will have a full squad to pick from as well. Wilkinson himself is back on the touch line after serving a one game suspension.

Note from writer: I’d like to formally apologise to the readers. Unfortunately I was unable to write this article mentioning that teams name without asterisk. Please forgive me.

After opening the scoring out the weekend, Glovers midfielder, Matt Worthington has been named in the official Vanarama team of the week.

Worthy’s Worthing goal makes him worthy of a spot in the side below;

We are top of the league… say, we are top of the league.

Ben, Dave and Wattsy break down another late, late show on Saturday as the mighty Glovers went 8 wins in a row and have a little chin wag about the noisy neighbours coming to town on Tuesday night.

Despite Storm Babet hitting the country hard, the National League South escaped with no postponements, meaning I get to bring you a full round-up of the league’s action! Here’s what went on across the rest of the division, following Yeovil’s last-gasp victory over Worthing.

We start down in Devon, where Torquay United had their goalscoring boots on, hammering 10-man Welling United 5-1 with Aaron Jarvis taking his league tally to 6 for the season. Elsewhere, there was a shock for a title contender, with Tonbridge Angels coming from a 2-1 deficit to win in the 89th minute over Bath City. W*ymouth warmed themselves up for Tuesday night’s derby by dispatching of Eastbourne Borough by a 3-1 score line.

Dover Athletic continue to search for their first league win since Matchday 2, as Hemel Hempstead crushed their dreams with a 95th minute penalty to draw 2-2. Meanwhile, Braintree Town and Dartford both secured 2-0 victories at home, against Weston-super-mare and Havant & Waterlooville respectively. St Albans City came from behind to beat Chippenham Town 2-1 to put a stop to their 2 game losing run.

Aveley‘s strong start to the season appears to be tailing off, as they were held at home once again, this time by Truro City who showed fight to grab a 90th minute equaliser, and in another draw for a playoff contender, Maidstone rescued a point at home to Farnborough, thanks once again to Levi Amantchi. Another upset at the top saw Taunton lose at home for the first time this season, Mason Bloomfield scoring in the second minute to hand Hampton & Richmond the three points, while in the final match of the day, Slough Town and Chelmsford City finished in a 0-0 draw.
