Yeovil Town’s Jordan Young scored his first Glovers’ goal has the hosts wrapped up a four-match home run with a third win at Huish Park.

Young scored the opener with Frank Nouble sealing the points late on, speaking exclusively to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall, he said that his patience had been worth it to finally notch his first league goal for the team.

“Obviously, I’m happy to get off the mark, I knew it was coming, I just needed to stay patient, work my into the team and I’m glad we got the win in the end.”

“I’ve always been confident when I play, I just think that it was a tough end to (last) season, with the club and stuff, but I’ve got to look at myself and think how can I get involved more and get on the score sheet, that’s what I’ve worked on this summer – what I can do better.”

The 13th minute goal was struck with his weaker right foot after a neat move to open the scoring in the first half;

“I took it onto my right foot – I don’t really know why – I’m left footed, but it was just what came to me at that time.

We started really well, we were really good in the first half, but when we’re good it’s important we take our chances, we should have gone in two or three-nil up and then the game is done, but we made it a bit hard for ourselves.

In the second half, they’re going to come out fighting and that’s what they did, we were a bit slow to get going in the second half and we had to defend for long periods, but in the end, we hit them on the counter and got the job done.”

The Glovers did miss chances to extend their lead, not least from a Rhys Murphy penalty, which was saved by the visiting Angels’ keeper, something which Young isn’t worried about… even if he did promise a tongue in cheek chat…

“I’ll have a chat with (Murphy) about (the penalty) later, obviously Murph is a top player, penalties get saved all the time, it’s nothing bad on him, just one of those things.”

Late goals have been the order of the day at Huish Park, as have substitutes making an impact, something which shows the strength in depth Yeovil have.

“It’s happened a few times, we’ve got a good squad here, if you don’t start you have got to come on and make an impact and that’s what they did again, it’s difficult, you’re not going to score every chance you get so, it’s important that at the other end of the pitch we’re nice and tight and not concede.”

“I always want to play football, it’s up to the gaffer, but I’ve done my bit today and we’ll go from there. “

Looking ahead, Young just wants to keep the momentum going, but appreciates Monday’s game against Havant and Waterlooville won’t be easy for multiple reasons.

“I was at Chippenham last year and (Havant) were a really good team last year, the year before we just beat them to the play-offs, so we know they’re a good team, they’ve started not great, I’ve got a friend there and he’s saying they’re doing the right things, it’s going to be a tough game.

Once you get a little winning run going, you’re flying, you’re on your way and you’ve just got to keep doing it day in, day out and take it in to match days.”

“The best thing about having a big squad is weekends like this – it’s a bit crazy if you ask me, playing 90 today and then again on Monday, it’s tough, but we’ve got good players to come in and out, which is how it’s been so far, so hopefully we can keep going.

If we can come off the back of two wins, that would be a really good weekend.”

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper thought his side were great this afternoon as the Glovers picked up a 2-0 win against Tonbridge Angels. Despite the 2-0 score line, it wasn’t plain sailing for Yeovil, with spurned chances aplenty – including a penalty – and Cooper said his side ‘have to be ruthless’.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall following the match, Cooper said: “I thought we were great today, but if you don’t kill the opposition off it can become scrappy because of the pressure. If we’d have gone two, three nil up, game done, then we can really start to express ourselves. The result is the most important thing but in patches I thought we were really good.”

“That should be a three or four nil game in my opinion, against a good team.”

Rhys Murphy missed  a penalty in the 63rd minute and Cooper felt the game should have been a lot more comfortable for his side.

“We have to be ruthless. [Alex] Whittle is clean through, hits the goalkeeper when he should score. We had numerous set pieces that are great deliveries from both sides that are tap ins. We miss a penalty. That should be a three or four nil game in my opinion, against a good team.”

Cooper said his side are ‘growing’ with a lot more fluency that in previous matches, although Tonbridge gave Yeovil a tough second half.

“They changed their system to try and match us up and when you don’t get that second goal you give the opposition energy and they think, ‘ok we’re not out of it’ and they should be.”

Jordan Young finally scored his first goal to lift Huish Park and the gaffer said he hopes that would boost the forward’s confidence. On the goal he said: “He’ll be better for that. He’s got great talent, he’s had to bide his time. He’s a confidence player so hopefully that gives him a little bounce in his step and he starts to grow because he’s got great ability.”

Clean sheet. Two clear goals and three more points on the board. On to Bank Holiday Monday and Havant…

Mark Cooper was chatting exclusively to the BBC’s Ian Randall, the club’s chat with the gaffer is below, in which he confirms that Jake Hyde is not going to play on the artificial surface at Havant, despite not ruling him out in midweek.

First competitive goals from Jordan Young and Frank Nouble were enough to earn Yeovil Towna third win of the season against Tonbridge Angels at Huish Park on Saturday.

Young, who was called in to the starting XI having sat out the first four games of the season, opened the scoring having broken in to the box after 13 minutes minutes to lash an effort under visiting goalkeeper Jonathan Henley.

Henley proved to be the difference between the Glovers and a more comprehensive lead not least on 63 minutes when he saved a penalty from Rhys Murphy having been booked for appearing to scuffing up the spot in front of the away end. He was not alone with referee Robert Ablitt handing out nine yellow cards in a game which could not be described as dirty.

Nouble, on as a substitute in the second half, sealed the win with five of nine minutes of second half injury time gone. The big frontman was set away by fellow substitute Olly Thomas and fired in at a near post.

Here’s how it went down at Huish Park…..

First half

There were three changes for Yeovil Town going into the match, with manager Mark Cooper citing Bank Holiday Monday’s trip to Havant & Waterlooville as a factor in team selection. Jordan Young, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Rhys Murphy came into the side in place of Frank Nouble, Jordan Maguire-Drew, who were on the bench, and Jamie Sendles-White who dropped out of the squad altogether.

It was the visitors came firing out of the starting blocks bombarding the Yeovil box with crosses and the opening exchanges made it clear that Tonbridge were happy to come to dig in for a result. In the initial exchanges, the diamond in midfield led to the inevitable lack of width with neither Alex Whittle or Morgan Williams getting forward to stretch the visiting back line.

The hosts did manage to enjoy much of the possession as the rain hammered down on Huish Park and their dominance paid off as they took the lead after 13 minutes. Jake Hyde held the ball up, played it out to Matt Worthington on the right and he found Jordan YOUNG on the edge of the box. The forward moved in to the box and hammered a low shot across the skiddy surface under visiting keeper Jonathan Henley.

On 19 minutes, Morgan Williams appeared to be bundled over in the box but referee Robert Ablitt was unmoved and the ball broke to Hyde whose close range effort was superbly denied by Henley.

Three minutes later, the match official was in the the spotlight again. Williams and Joseph Turner went in for what looked like a 50-50 challenge on a wet pitch which the Yeovil man came off the worse in, but he was the one who got the booking. The home crowd certainly thought that Turner should have also seen a yellow.

Tonbridge’s first chance came on 23 minutes when Lewis Gard’s ball in to the box was flicked on by Jamie Fielding almost found ex-Bristol Rovers’ man Stefan Payne, but he was unable to make contact and his effort went in to the side netting.

The 31st minute was met with a round of applause in memory of Yeovil supporter Craig Leader, who tragically lost his battle against bowel cancer at the age of 31. A big thankyou to all those from Tonbridge who joined in this moment. Class.

With eight minutes to play before half-time, a Great move from Jordan Young, who was impressing on his first start of the season, out wide saw him cut in and his ball in was flicked on by Hyde, but Henley was up to it again.

Referee Ablitt was back in the action on 41 minutes. Murphy tussled with his marker and the referee adjudged the striker to have fouled. Let’s just say the official is

Young and Hyde combined with half-time closing in and it was Young who clipped a ball in to the box but Murphy could only turn it wide. Once again, the chances were there for the home side, it was the goals that were missing.

With the final kick of the half, a free-kick from Charlie Cooper forced another good save out of Henley and (again!) the keeper came out on top.

It was Yeovil who undoubtedly dominated the first half and were well worth their advantage, but, given the chances they created, will be disappointed it was only by a single goal.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 Tonbridge Angels 0

Second half

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Tonbridge having the better of the early exchanges and had the first chance. After 48 minutes,  a  simple straight ball forward found Turner who brought the ball down well and his effort had Will Buse scrambling, but went wide.

Not long after visiting striker Ibby Akanbi broke in from the left and got his shot away but again wide in front of the Thatcher’s Stand. Cue the expected ripple of frustrated noises from the home crowd and the rallying cry from captain Josh Staunton to his Yeovil team-mates.

Young put an effort wide at the other end after good play from Lo-Everton and then on 55 minutes both Jake Wannell and Rhys Murphy entered the referee’s box. Wannell’s was for what appeared a nothing challenge on Akanbi – presumably one for the ‘totting up’ list – whereas Murphy’s was for having a word with the official. Rule 1, Rhys, Rule 1.

Tonbridge undoubtedly had the better of the opening 15 minutes after the restart, but the best chance of the half fell to Yeovil on the hour. Whittle broke in to the box and got his left foot around it but that man Henley was on hand to deny the hosts from increasing their lead – again!

On 63 minutes, the questionable decisions of the referee finally went in favour of the home side as they were awarded a penalty. Murphy was one-v-one with Kodi Lyons-Foster, there was a little contact but, after a bit of pause, Mr Ablitt awarded the spot kick. After a long delay and more than a suggestion that Henley had scuffed the penalty spot, Murphy went low and hard and Henley did well to keep it out. It must be noted that Henley got a booking for his ‘intervention’.

That proved to be Murphy’s last involvement as he was replaced by Olly Thomas on 65 minutes with Frank Nouble also replacing Hyde.

Payne put an effort over after 72 minutes and a minute later Yeovil manager Mark Cooper made a change as Zac Bell replaced Sonny Blu Lo-Everton with the hosts switching to a back three with Morgan Williams moving in to the middle.

Nouble volleyed an effort goalwards from 50 yards with Henley off his line but that was about as close as the home side came to getting another goal. The keeper was certainly not afraid to come off his line.

There was no surprise when the fourth official put up the board to confirm nine minutes of injury time. In a game which certainly could not be described as dirty, there were eight bookings across the two teams. Well done, ref!

It took five minutes of added time for the home side to get a second. A well-worked move involving Young in midfield and Thomas set NOUBLE away and the big forward powered forward and drove it hard and low past Henley at his near post.

Two goals, a first clean sheet of the season and finally, comfortable.

Yeovil Town goalkeeper Lewis Williams has rejoined his former club Tiverton Town on a one-month loan deal.

Williams hasn’t yet made a competitive start for the Glovers and hasn’t been named as a substitute either with Mark Cooper choosing to name five outfield players on the bench.

Lewis Clarke of DevonLive also reports the loan deal comes with permission to use Williams in the FA Cup qualification games Tiverton have coming up which would mean he’d be Cup tied for the Glovers.

It leaves the Glovers with just Will Buse as a registered goalkeeper for the next 28 days.

We’ll add him to the Loan Watch list and keep you updated as to how he gets on.

Craig Leader 1991-2023

Friends and family of Glovers’ fan Craig Leader have asked that Yeovil Town fans come together to remember their loved one in the upcoming game against Tonbridge Angels this Saturday.

Mark Puddy, Craig’s close friend, has confirmed that a piece remembering the long time supporter will appear in the match day programme, whilst supporters are asked to take a moment to applaud Craig in the 31st minute of the game.

Mark approached the Gloverscast and wanted Yeovil Town supporters to know a little bit about Craig, sadly taken too soon, the following words are from Mark, but echoed by us all at the Gloverscast.

“It is with great sadness to receive the news that Craig Leader has passed away at the young age of 31.

Craig was the kindest, most genuine, loyal and good hearted person you could meet in a lifetime. Always putting others before himself.

Outside of football, he loved his darts, skittles, and cricket. Craig won 3 league titles with his some of his closest friends playing for Dart Vaders. He was also a big part of Blue Park Rangers tittle and cup winning achievements. He will be a big loss to all the sports teams he was involved in.
And will be an even bigger loss to all his family and friends, who loved him so dearly.

And obviously Craig was a massive Yeovil Town FC fan. Buying his first and the group’s first season ticket aged 18 in the home terrace. Moving us all from our comfy seats into the loud and amazing atmosphere that was the home terrace. We all owe Craig the amazing memories we have from the terrace most notably Sheffield United in the league one Play offs.

And of course, many away days on the GWSC. Few that stand out are Carlisle United four times. Once one a Tuesday night. Picking up one point in the process.
Hartlepool when on arrival a steward got on coach and told us the game was snowed off. So, we had a McDonald’s and headed home.

And Millwall the first of our Championship dream.
Craig will be missed by so many , just seeing the comments and tributes on social media shows what kind of person Craig was.”

Craig Leader 1991 – 2023

If you are going to the game on Saturday, feel free to add to the add to the applause in the 31st minute.
From all of us at the Gloverscast, our thoughts remain with Craig’s family and friends. ?
