Match Report

Yeovil Town are through to the semi finals of the Somerset Premier Cup after a 2-0 win against Cheddar at Huish Park.

All the action was in the first half with goals from Alex Bradley and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and plenty of efforts at goal.

The second saw Bradley hit the post, and a couple of half chances for Cheddar but the Glovers were more than comfortable on the night.

First half

Cheddar came out of the gates pretty quickly and their number 8, Ricky Bennett had a hopeful effort float wide of Max Evans goal less than a minute in.

After that Yeovil’s superiority took hold and they controlled proceeding as you’d expect. Matt Worthington’s lofted pass released Jordan Barnett on the left and his cross was a touch too high for Adi Yussuf.

A few minutes later, Yussuf should have put Yeovil a goal ahead after being released in the penalty box. His left footed shot struck the post, though, and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton couldn’t get the rebound on target.

Chris Coombs tickled the top of Evan’s crossbar with a delivery from the right hand side which drew a sharp intake of breath from the die hards at Huish Park. Real who?

Cheddar nearly scored an own goal worth of the Somerset Premier Cup Blooper Blu Ray in the 17th minute with an ricochet flying towards goal that Dale Gorman would have been proud of.

20 minutes in Morgan Williams appeared on the edge of the box and struck a fierce effort that took a deflection of the bar.

From the resulting corner, played short, Alex BRADLEY did his best Tom Knowles impression cutting inside and drilling a left footed shot inside Dan Jackson’near post. 1-0.

The best back to goal striker in the Somerset Premier Cup showed what he was all about half an hour in. Holding off three defender before shooting straight at the keeper.

The Glovers doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute through with neat interplay releasing LO-EVERTON on the right of the the penalty box and he finished comfortably. 2-0

Two goals up and confidence flowing, Sonny had another effort from distance which was flapped at by the Cheddar keeper.

Not to be out done by Sonny, Bradley had a swerving effort from distance himself which forced the purple-clad Jackson into a flying save to his left.

The woodwork shook again just after 40 minutes, this time Toby Stephens left Jackson rooted to the spot willing the net not to bulge.

Half time: Cheddar 0 Yeovil Town 2

Second half

It took a few minutes to liven up in the second half and the first opportunity fell the Glovers way.

Yussuf was played into a good position on the left side of the box, he shot was saved, but had he squared it to Reid, the goal was a sure thing…I expect.

The second half didn’t liven up much more. A couple of half chances for Cheddar went awry.

Bradley came close to scoring he second with a good low shot rebounding off the post and across the line.

Darren Sarll introduced Fin Skiverton, Sam Hodges and Benjani Jr towards the end but it was a good outing for two of the youngsters in Mason Hunter and Finlay Ridout who both completed 90 minutes.

Full time: Cheddar 0 Yeovil Town 2

There were a few names which Glovers’ fans might have been expecting to see on the team sheet for the Somerset Premier Cup tie against Cheddar, who were missing, we’ve done some digging and this is why a few young Glovers were missing.

Ollie Haste was away on international duty with the English Colleges FA. He played from the start against Wales today, earning his second cap. The defender has also been playing for Southern League Division One South side Barnstaple Town.

Pedro Borges came off the bench against Bridgwater United and starred against Larkhall Athletic back in November, but has now signed scholarship forms at Exeter City and represents their Under 18s.

Korey Andrews, who also made a couple of appearances from the bench in the SPC. He has now joined Western League Premier Division side Street and represents them in their first team.

However, there was a good representation of the Under-18s side in the squad which faces Cheddar tonight with defenders Mason Hunter and Finlay Ridout both named in the starting XI.

On the bench, there are places for Callum SmalleySam HodgesBenjani Junior, the son of the former Manchester City and Portsmouth striker, and Fin Skiverton, one of Terry’s three sons who played and scored against Bridgwater United in a previous round and has been playing for Street recently.

As promised by manager Darren Sarll, there are starts for goalkeeper Max Evans, and midfield spots for Alex Bradley and Toby Stephens.

Yeovil Town (4-4-2): Max Evans, Mason Hunter, Finlay Ridout, Morgan Williams, Jordan Barnett, Matthew Worthington, Toby Stephens, Alex Bradley, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Adi Yussuf, Reuben Reid. Substitutes: Callum Smalley, Sam Hodges, Joshua Sutton, Aidan Skiverton, Benjani Junior.

Yeovil Town Under-18s player Ollie Haste was named in the starting line up for England Colleges’ fixture against their Welsh counterparts on Tuesday.

The Glovers’ left-back, who has represented Darren Sarll’s side in both the Somerset Premier Cup and been on the first team bench on a couple of occasions, played the full game in a 1-1 draw played at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

This was the defender’s second appearance for the three lions after making his debut back in December.

As well as turning out for the young Glovers, Ollie is on a dual registration with Southern League Division One South Barnstaple Town. He played in their goalless draw at AFC Totton at the weekend.

Huge congratulations, once again, Ollie, from everyone here at the Gloverscast.

There will be no Theatre of Cheese for Yeovil Town‘s Somerset Premier Cup quarter-final tie with Cheddar after the game was switched to Huish Park.

Huish Park will be the venue for the Somerset Premier Cup quarter-final with Cheddar.

The club confirmed that The Cheesemen will come to them tomorrow night (February 15) with the kick-off time remaining at 7.45pm.

With heavy rain predicted before the match, the thought is that the pitch at Bowdens Park may not be able to stand up to the test.

Yeovil have said ticket details will be confirmed on the day.

Cheddar picked up a 2-2 draw at home to AEK Boco in the Toolstation Western Football League at the weekend, leaving them seventh in the table.

In the competition’s other ties, Bath City travel to Welton Rovers and Odd Down host Wells City. The other tie saw Frome Town beat Weston-super-Mare earlier this month.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll has said he expects to pick a strong side for the tie with stand-in goalkeeper Max Evans and midfielders Toby Stephens and Alex Bradley all expected to feature.

Find out more – here.

Highlights of the goalless draw at Eastleigh on Saturday are now available to view on the club’s YouTube channel.

The highlights are only 3 minutes 30 seconds long, but the main highlights from the Yeovil side come as follows:

  • 01:15 – A decent chance for ‘debutant’ (for the third time) Olufela Olomola
  • 01:40 – Defender Ben Barclay‘s header comes back off the crossbar.
  • 02:22 – The dust-up between Tom Knowles and Eastleigh’s Ryan Hill which could (should?) have seen a red card shown.

Two goals apiece from Benjani Junior and substitute Joshua John saw Yeovil Town Under-18s romp to a 7-0 win over Paulton Rovers in the South West Counties Youth League.

The young Glovers’ other scorers were Mason Hunter, Sam Hodges and substitute Rio Mapletoft at the Alvington Playing Fields on Saturday.

The result moves the Under-18s up to fifth place in the nine-team division with games in hand over every team in the division.

They host Bath City, who sit one place below them in the table, at Alvington on Saturday (10.30am kick-off).

Max Evans

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll has promised to send a strong side for the Somerset Premier Cup tie against Cheddar on Tuesday night.

Speaking before the weekend’s game with Eastleigh, he said it would be the first team who line up.

He told the media: “Who else is going to play the game, the reserve team? Haven’t got one. Youth team? Haven’t got one.

“I’m not going to put 16 year olds out there, minors, I wouldn’t put 12 of them against men, someone is going to get hurt. I might be able to put two or three in and surround them with some big boys, but we have to play the competition and we’ve got one football team.”

Sarll confirmed later to the Gloverscast, that there would be some rotation within the smaller squad with a couple of obvious names in the frame to get some game time with the versatile Alex Bradley, young midfielder Toby Stephens and stand-in goalkeeper Max Evans all in line to start or play a key role.

“Max (Evans) like any young lad has had those games, Toby (Stephens) has had a loan spell at Hemel and he’s probably due another spell and we’d like to get him out especially now Lawson (D’Ath) is back.

“I don’t want that young man sitting idle, Toby is training very well by the way…they will definitely be involved, all three will play. I need to check on Toby to make sure we’re not breaking any regulations.”

The FA has confirmed Dale Gorman’s two-match ban following his tenth yellow card of the season in the goalless draw at Eastleigh at the weekend.

The FA Website has updated to show his 83rd minute booking has been listed as a ‘foul tackle’ and as such, he will be sat in the stands for a couple of games.

The Northern Irishman will miss the Glovers’ upcoming games against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday and Maidenhead United three days later.

He will be back for the trip to Chesterfield on Saturday, February 26.

As a note, he is available to Darren Sarll for the Somerset Premier Cup tie against Cheddar, which is not considered a first-team fixture for disciplinary issues.

Ben Barclay

Yeovil Town’s on loan defender Ben Barclay has been named in the Non-League Paper’s Team of the Week for his performance in the Glovers’ 0-0 with Eastleigh.

The centre back, on a temporary deal from Stockport has been named alongside Aaron Drewe of W*ymouth and Wealdstone’s Jaydn Mundle-Smith in the mythical back three.

Barclay is scheduled to remain at Huish Park for four more games including this Tuesday’s Somerset Premier Cup tie at Cheddar.
