Plympton Punish Glovers

Match Round Up

Yeovil Town Women suffered their second league defeat of the season as Plympton Ladies overcame the Glovers by three goals to nil. A goal by Izzy Rogers as well as a brace by Elsa Finnegan ensured that Plympton’s perfect start to the season continued.

Paul Knight made three changes to the side who thrived in the FA Cup last week, as Abbie Vernon, Terri Will and Niamh Nicholls came in to the starting eleven.

Yeovil started positively against the league leaders, with Becky Miles testing the goalkeeper early. Moments later, the Glovers had the ball in the net as Nicholls fired in after Will’s effort cannoned off the crossbar, however Nicholls was denied by the offside flag.

The hosts grew into the affair as the half progressed and took the lead in the 41st minute.

The teams went in at half time with Plympton leading by one goal to nil.

Plympton began the second half with a point to prove and doubled their lead within the first minute, to rub salt in Yeovil wounds.

Plympton confirmed that their winning form would continue, as they made it three in the 78th minute, all but confirming the victory.

Despite a late rally by Yeovil, in which Nicholls and Becky Miles had efforts on goal, the match finished 3-0 to the hosts Plympton, who retained their perfect record in the Regen Arable Division One South.

That’s what they said

Yeovil Town Women manager Paul Knight spoke to the media after the match.

“It was disgracefully poor. Paul began, “the girls have let themselves down today and it’s just not good enough. I can’t even say that we lost to a better opposition today, we lost to, I’m sorry to say, a relatively poor side. Fair play to the opposition, they obviously wanted it more, they took their chances. I can handle losing, but we lose when we fight and we play and we never did that today and they know that.”

The Glovers failed to score for just the second time of the league season.

“There was just a lack of desire, not taking our opportunities in front of goal. We made it easy for the opposition and these are the hardest ones to swallow because we win against greater opposition last week. You can blame us coaches but there’s only so much you can do in terms of setting up and prepping them. The players know they haven’t turned up today and there was no desire to turn up I believe.”

Ahead of FA Cup action in a fortnight’s time, Paul discussed the need for his side to regroup during their break from league action.

“I think we’ve just got to gather our heads, go back to basics, everything today that was missing was basics, but it wasn’t even necessarily the football, it comes down to that fire in the belly, so I think it’s just getting the team united and making sure they’re up for it. We’ve got to put today behind us, it’s quite difficult. There’s quite a bit of reflection to do so we have that little bit of time off now to get our heads straight.”
