Yeovil Town midfielder Brett McGavin says the mood at the club is “night and day” compared to last season as the Glovers prepare for Saturday’s trip to Wealdstone.
Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah, McGavin reflected on a buoyant atmosphere at Huish Park following a sensational 6-0 thrashing of Boston United. The emphatic victory not only pushed Yeovil into the National League top four but also earned the squad some well-deserved extra time off after hitting a pre agreed points target by the Manager.
“The gaffer proposed it to us pretty early, and I think you could tell by the way we played Saturday that we were all keen on it,” McGavin revealed. “It’s been a busy schedule, so the lads enjoyed a nice little break, but we’re back on the horse today.”
McGavin, one of the few players remaining from last season, credited the management for radically changing the club’s trajectory and creating a thriving culture.

“It’s massive. All credit goes to [Billy Rowley and Darren Simpson] because the players they’ve brought in and the environment they’ve created has been brilliant,” McGavin said.
“I was out of contract at the end of last season, so when the gaffer came to me and we spoke about a new deal, I was keen on signing because I knew the style of play suited me… I just think they’ve identified my strengths and allowed me to play to them. So, dictating games from deep with my passing and trying to get on the end of things and scoring goals, it just suits me perfectly. I think that’s their biggest strength is they’ve identified players’ strengths, what they’re good at, and allowed them to showcase that every matchday.”
“Since I’ve been at Yeovil, we’ve kind of been down there [towards the bottom of the league], so it’s just so nice to be part of a team that’s up in the top end of the table for once.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s test against Wealdstone, McGavin insisted there would be no complacency: “Wealdstone are definitely a tough team to play against, particularly at their place. We won’t be taking our foot off the gas; we’ll be full pelt and ready to get three points.”
“We know at Huish Park that we should be favourites in every game, but can we stay on track away from home? That’s the question. I believe we can, and I think we will. I think part of our job is making sure that we come across [positively]. How we represent the club is so important, and I’m glad that the fans are picking up on the fact that we’re all happy and we’re all enjoying it, because we are. So, yeah, the whole club seems to be in a good place at the moment, and long may it continue.”
