Ahead of this weekend’s National League encounter with Altrincham, BBC Somerset’s Jack Killah caught up with Yeovil Town defender Joe Gubbins to discuss the Glovers’ recent form.
Following another high-scoring victory in midweek, Gubbins told BBC Somerset:
”Of course, a lot of confidence. Another game where we scored a lot of goals. I think the team performance was pretty good as well… overall it’s another win and it’s another game in our unbeaten run.”
Altrincham arrive at Huish Park having won five of their last six matches, with their only recent blemish coming against Boreham Wood. Gubbins acknowledged the tough test awaiting them:
”Every game in this league is the old cliché, ain’t it? They’re all a tough game and we’ll have to make sure we’re at it, but in the last few weeks, I think we’ve been very good and hopefully we can continue that on Saturday.”
“We believe we’re a really good team and we believe we’re a top team and we believe we can beat anyone in this league when we’re at it.”
Both sides must contend with testing weather conditions, with high winds forecasted for matchday with Storm Austen on the way. When asked about playing in the wind, Gubbins didn’t hold back his aversion:
”Anything with wind, I hate it. Anything with wind, I hate it. It ruins everything. I’d rather it was pissing down with rain and was cold.”
Not a fan, then Joe!?
”You’ve got to play the conditions as well as the game and hopefully you can carry out your tactics as well… it’s the same for both teams, so it is what it is.”
Off the pitch, team morale remains high as Yeovil fight to cement their place in the play-off spots. Gubbins praised the positive culture within the camp:
”The camp’s great anyway. The boys are great, everyone’s in a really good place, everyone gets on really well. So, I mean, there’s no complaints at the moment.”
That positive environment is being driven from the front by newly confirmed club captain Brett McGavin whom Gubbins singled out for high praise following his arrival in the summer:
”In every way—off the pitch, on the pitch, the way he performs, the way he treats the boys, the way he treats the staff… He’s a top lad, he’s a top captain, he’s very well deserved.”
A positive result this weekend would keep the Glovers firmly on an upward trajectory against another play-off contender.
