Latest Yeovil Town News (Page 81)

Frank Nouble’s first goal of the season saw Yeovil Town pick up their first win in more than two months against a battling Tamworth side at Huish Park.

The Glovers fell behind when Rohan Maher stabbed home just before the half-hour mark and the home side failed to create anything approaching an effort on the visitors’ goal.

But, they were handed an equaliser through a slice of luck when Charlie Cooper’s effort took a deflection to go past Jas Singh in the Tamworth goal and then just before the hour mark Nouble’s shot across the keeper flew in to the bottom corner to earn the win.

They had to scrap for it for the remaining half-an-hour with Tamworth bringing on long throw specialist Tom Tonks, whose missiles in to the box caused problems, but Yeovil held on for the win that their second half performance deserved.

First half

There was not too much to discuss about a scrappy opening 15 minutes on what appeared to be a solid pitch, with the first opportunity coming from  a good turn from the returning Frank Nouble on the left side saw them send a ball across the face of the visitors’ goal. No-one taking a gamble in the hosts’ attack. At the other end Jordan Ponticelli had an effort blocked four minutes later, but that was about it from either side.

Much like last weekend’s home defeat to Wealdstone, the first chance led to a goal – for the visitors. McGlinchey got away down the left hand side and got the ball in to Ponticelli, who got the ball in to Rohan MAHER who stabbed it home with 28 minutes gone. With absolutely nothing going forwards, it is another big ask for Yeovil’s players.

Tamworth celebration Rohan Maher’s opening goal after 28 minutes.

On 35 minutes, James Plant got past a defender and unleashed the first effort ‘on goal’, well, it went high over the bar and two minutes later Maher tried his luck from distance with a snap shot which Aidan Stone had to be on his toes to parry away.

On 39 minutes a moment of controversy. Wilson ran in to the box and appeared to have his heels clipped by Ben Crompton. Referee Dale Baines looked to point to the penalty spot, no, he clearly pointed to the penalty spot but then changed his mind. Has his assistant had a word in his ear? Hard to say Yeovil’s attacking efforts deserved it, but the laws of the game say that is a penalty. If it’s not a penalty, it is a booking for Wilson for a dive. It’s neither.

Kyrell Wilson goes down in the box…..nothing given.

Tamworth central defender Haydn Hollis fired a left-footed shot just wide with two minutes of the half remaining before Sonny Blu Lo-Everton hit one high over the bar at the other end. Like, out of the ground high over the bar.

A soft goal conceded and Tamworth’s defence has not been tested at all, goalkeeper Jas Singh could have put a deck chair up inside his penalty area. A big 45 minutes coming.

Half time: Yeovil Town 0 Tamworth 1

Second half

It needed a big response from the home side and five minutes after the restart, Yeovil were level. There was a huge slice of luck involved as Charlie COOPER‘s shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off a Tamworth defender and beat Singh all ends up. A huge slice of luck, but we will take it.

On 53 minutes, James Plant did superbly to win the ball off a defender and broke away with Yeovil having three on one against the Tamworth defence. Plant had Lo Everton to his left and Wilson to his right, but the Port Vale loanee tried to feed it in to the path of Wilson – but put far too much on it and the ball ran out for a goal kick. Great opportunity.

The goal – however lucky it was – has given Yeovil confidence and just before the hour mark they took the lead. The ball was worked out to the right side where Frank NOUBLE drove towards the box and unleashed an angled shot which went in to the far corner. It was the striker’s first goal in almost a year, but what a time to get it.

On the hour mark, Tamworth made two changes including the arrival of midfielder and long throw specialist (/human missile launcher) Tom Tonks.

There was a big blow for Yeovil on 64 minutes as Plant went down off the ball and immediately looked in trouble. He needed to be helped off the pitch by the medical staff with what looked like a hamstring injury, the same thing which saw him return to his parent club Port Vale in December. Another f***ing injury. Ugh. Ciaran McGuckin came on to replace him.

Remember I mentioned Tom Tonks? Having caused issues with some earlier throws, on 72 minutes he found Hollis whose close range effort was blocked by Stone. Not sure quite how he saved it, I’m not sure the goalkeeper is even sure how he did. Possibly with his face. Don’t concede a throw in your own half, boys.

On 81 minutes, Dan Creaney nodded over from another Tonks free kick and the visitors helped their hosts with a couple of poorly flight free kicks (including one from Tonks who seems better with his hands) which were given away in dangerous positions.

Six minutes of injury time were nervous to put it mildly, but everyone connected to Yeovil Town needed a win and they got one. A much better second half, a slice of luck with the equaliser sparked it, but however it happened, it happened.

Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper has said it is time for the club’s experienced players to “stand up” as they go looking for their first National League win in more than two months at home to Tamworth tonight.

The boss has made four changes from the 2-1 defeat to Wealdstone at Huish Park last weekend with Sonny Blu Lo-Everton making a surprise return to the line-up alongside Charlie Cooper, who has returned from suspension. Experienced defender Michael Smith and forward Frank Nouble are also back in the starting XI.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Mark Stillman ahead of the game, Cooper said: “We have not got a lot of choice, but we have got with a bit of experience. If you look at Aidan Stone, Michael Smith, Jake Wannell, Charlie Cooper, Brett McGavin, Sonny, Frank Nouble, you would class them all as experienced players. It is time for our boys to stand up.

We have four fresh faces in the team, but if you take (Aaron) Jarvis and Morgan Williams out of any team at this level and it is going to really hinder you.

The boss revealed that on loan Swindon Town midfielder Sean McGurk was out of the squad with “a sore thigh“. Defender Morgan Williams (hamstring), midfielder Jacob Maddox (foot) and striker Jarvis (hamstring) are also missing.

Cooper revealed that the club learned that Bristol Rovers would recall midfielder Kofi Shaw late on Monday afternoon. The 18-year-old is named among the substitutes for his parent club’s League One fixture at Wycombe Wanderers tonight.

He said: “They have got loads of injuries. They are really pleased with the amount of minutes he has got and the way he has developed, it is good to keep that relationship with clubs like Bristol Rovers and Bristol City and try and get their best loans.”

The Glovers drew 0-0 at Tamworth back in October when defender Morgan Williams was sent off after 71 minutes. The Midlands club is a familiar one to Cooper, who began his managerial career at The Lamb Ground in 2004, spending three years in charge there.

Speaking of his time, the Glovers’ boss said: “It was a good start for me, there were really good people there who looked after me. I did not have a clue what I was doing – some would say I still don’t – but I really enjoyed it and it gave me a really good experience of working with tight budgets.

They have done really well. The manager, Andy (Peaks), has done a great job. It is a tough place to play (at Tamworth) on their 3G surface and we played really well there  when we had ten men for a long time, but we played really well. But you know at stages in time game you are going to have to defend balls in to your box and that is where at the moment we have to be a lot better, defending our box and penetrating theirs.”

Yeovil Town have made four changes to the starting line-up which lost at home to Wealdstone at the weekend as Tamworth visit Huish Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

The lesser spotted Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, who has not featured since the 4-0 defeat at York City at the end of November, returns in midfielder alongside Charlie Cooper, who is back after a two-match suspension.

Frank Nouble and Michael Smith also return to the starting XI with Ciaran McGuckin, Dom Bernard and Josh Sims all dropping to the substitutes’ bench having started three days ago. There is no place in the squad for Swindon Town loanee Sean McGurk.

Kofi Shaw has returned to Bristol Rovers as the midfielder’s loan has been cut short.

The Gas have taken the option to recall Shaw back into their first team fold. Originally signed on a short-term loan, the deal was extended until the end of the current campaign.

The 18-year-old became the Glovers’ second youngest league goal scorer earlier this season with his strike at Hartlepool United.

In total, he played 16 times in green-and-white, scoring twice. His other goal came on and eventful game against Forest Green on New Years Day where he was also sent off.

Shaw has started just two matches since returning from that suspension with his last start coming in the 1-1 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge a fortnight ago.

All the best back at the Mem, Kofi!

It was disappointment on Yeovil’s return to Huish Park on Saturday, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Wealdstone. Let’s see what else went on this weekend in the National League.

We begin at table toppersΒ Barnet, who inflicted further defeat on Matt Taylor’s Solihull Moors in a 3-1 victory, with January arrivals Dom Telford and Lee Ndlovu bagging the goals for the title chasers. In contrasting fashion, it was a first league defeat since September for title hunting Forest Green Rovers, asΒ Braintree Town impressed in a 2-0 win to take themselves five points clear of the drop. Another 2-0 home win came atΒ Eastleigh, who defeated Aldershot Town to end a run of four defeats in all competitions.

Ebbsfleet’s wait for a first win since September continues, courtesy of an Ollie Pearce brace as the Fleet lost 2-0 at home toΒ York City, while there were 1-1 draws a plenty, asΒ AFC Fylde andΒ Dagenham & RedbridgeΒ shared the points, a late own goal by Scott Hogan rescued a point forΒ Southend United againstΒ a visitingΒ Rochdale, and a late equaliser for Tuesday’s visitorsΒ Tamworth meant they leftΒ Woking with a point. There were 1-0 wins for playoff contenders, asΒ FC Halifax Town andΒ Altrincham defeatedΒ Boston United and Gateshead respectively.

Finally, there were goalless draws forΒ Hartlepool UnitedΒ andΒ Maidenhead United, andΒ Oldham AthleticΒ andΒ Sutton United.

National League table

It’s been four weeks since we last issued a the YeoGov survey – here’s a reminder of the results of that one. Since then the club held the fans’ forum at Huish Park, lost 4-0 to Rochdale, earned a draw at Dagenham & Redbridge and lost to 2-1 Wealdstone at the weekend.

We’ve got our usual questions around performance around the club and match experience (that one’s optional for you Exiles) but we’ve tacked one on the end about ‘the land’. At the fan forum a last month there was lots of discussion around the future of the land that surrounds Huish Park. With a deadline of May 2026 to make the most of the exclusive buy-back, the clock is ticking to purchase the land back from Somerset Council for more than Β£3m. Our own Ben sent a message in to BBC Radio Somerset’s breakfast show, asking Council Leader Bill Revans about the council’s view on the land.

Speaking at the fan forum, Martin Hellier said: β€œWhatever happens that land is going to get developed on. When you talk about the rent, I probably pay Β£100,000 a year to watch people walk their dogs on that land, so it is not my interests. We are well aware of the timeline, we have until May 2026 to buy back the land, we hold exclusive buy-back rights on the land, so no-one can come in and take that away from us.”

The survey is below.

We are in esteemed company this Tuesday evening… no not Tom Tonks and his long throw, but a proper, bonafide, EFL referee has been assigned to the clash between Yeovil and Tamworth.

Dale Baines is far more used to the glitz and glamour of League One, League Two and even the Johnstones Paint, Papa Johns, LDV Vans, Auto Windscreens, Vertu Motors Trophy.

In total, he’s taken charge of 25 games, given 86 people a yellow card, just the ONE red (and even that was a double yellow in a Premier League 2 game) and awarded five penalties.

Incredibly, for a ref that’s been on the circuit for a while, he’s never taken charge of either a Yeovil or a Tamworth game.

Adam Wilson and Jack Clench will be flag waving, Lewis Sandoe is bashing the board buttons on 4th official duties.

Yeovil fell to defeat at the hands of Wealdstone at Huish Park yesterday. I was under the H yesterday and here are my conclusions from a pretty terrible afternoon.

It wasn’t alright. A match between two poor, low on confidence teams didn’t make for the greatest spectacle. Usually we look technically sound and really in control of games (clearly that doesn’t guarantee victory) but I didn’t really feel that we were in control of any situations, especially defensively. Without Charlie Cooper we lose midfield control and without Morgan Williams we have to move Jake Wannell centrally and lose his input on the left-side of the back three. We struggled for any real cohesion going forward and the less said about the defending the better.

It was yet another bad result at home. Yeovil have won just four of their National League matches at Huish Park this season. You could forgive those early defeats to Hartlepool, Rochdale and Solihull as adjusting to the new level, because they we were winning against the teams you’d expect to beat. Now, Yeovil are not winning those games and while the games are tight, we seem to find ourselves in a perpetual struggle to break down teams and find the back of the net. Our home points total accounts for only 44% of our total points and only 46% of the goals we’ve scored, compared to 57% for both points and goals last season. Fortress Huish has been breached.

We don’t feel like a team at the moment. Our league-winning team has been dismantled since that trophy lift with only Wannell and Whittle left from that team starting yesterday. From our opening match day squad of 18, there were just eight in the squad yesterday, including Matt Gould who’s yet to make an appearance. With a revolving door of ins and outs, is it any wonder they don’t feel like a team right now? There’s been talk about different types of leaders, but at this moment we are absolutely missing the Terry Skiverton on that pitch. We’ve let Worthington go, Nouble (TL?) has struggled to make an impact, Smith has struggled for fitness, there’s no Murphy, Hyde or Fisher type bring off the bench. In my opinion, we don’t have the multiple ‘characters’ you need to get out of a rotten run like this and that is a concern.

The next two matches are huge. Last weekend’s point at Dagenham & Redbridge only looked good if we won yesterday. Now the visit of Tamworth and trip to Maidenhead have even more pressure on them. Tamworth could leapfrog us if they pick up the points on Tuesday and we don’t win at Maidenhead – I’m still trying to erase 2022/23 from my memory. Can this group handle the pressure? Our loanees are all under 22. We’ve got a new goalkeeper getting used to his defensive unit and – without Charlie Cooper – a lack of depth and pretty tepid midfield. Thankfully, Cooper will return and give us a bit of structure in midfield to control the game. We’re in must-win territory, especially at home.

The mood is dour. It’s been four weeks since the Friday night draw with Gateshead, so I expected a bit of a show. The Thatchers were certainly in good voice all afteroon, but come the final whistle yesterday the boos were as loud as they’ve been since the 2022/23 horror story. It was my first match as a punter yesterday – when you are on the radio you hear the vociferous grumbles in front of you but not the general mood as much. So yesterday was eye-opening. People are tired, again. People aren’t enjoying their afternoon out, again. And the atmosphere on social media – which is usually dialled up – feels like it’s in the stands too. We know from recent history that supporters of Yeovil will vote with their feet and not go to matches, which spells problems for a club that needs gate receipts. The playoff hopes are a distant memory now and with our current form, we should be looking over our shoulder at what’s creeping up behind us.

Let’s distract ourselves from the game at Huish Park for a moment and take a check in on those of a Green and White persuasion who are out and about on loan.

There wasn’t much to talk about with pretty much only our two loanees in the division below getting game time.

Firstly, Torquay closed the gap on Dorking at the top of the National League South table with a win over Hornchurch.

Jordan Thomas clocked up another 90 minutes and nearly scored for the Gulls.

At the other end of the table, W*ymouth remain rooted to the bottom, they lost 3-0 to Farnborough, Will Buse made an error for the first  goal, whilst Brandon Goodship missed a penalty… (you’re thinking about Grant Smith’s hips again, aren’t you?)

Sherborne, Wellington and Bridport games were all called off. So there was limited action for the Under 18s this weekend.
