Well, that wasn’t the most entertaining of afternoons, however it was still a good point, as Yeovil drew 0-0 with high flying Hampton & Richmond Borough. Thankfully, there were goals aplenty across the league, keeping me in a job for another week! Let’s take a look at who’s done what, and how it impacts the league table.

We begin in West Sussex, where a top-end clash went down, with tons of goals to boot. Worthing hammered 10 man Maidstone, an Ollie Pearce hattrick handing the hosts a 5-1 win. Last week’s hosts Dartford were on their travels, and probably wished they weren’t, as they fell to a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Tonbridge Angels. Another contender for game of the week came at Plainmoor, where Torquay United recovered from a two goal deficit to win 3-2 at home to Hemel Hempstead, a Dean Moxey winner coming in the 89th minute.

Another 3-2 thriller was played out on the North Somerset coast, where Truro City travelled back home with all 3 points over Weston-super-mare, former Glover Ryan Law getting himself on the scoresheet for the visitors. Havant & Waterlooville continued their revival as they dismantled Taunton to win 3-0, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table for the first time since matchday 8; meanwhile, Slough Town and Farnborough dropped a “Desmond”, the draw doing neither side any favours.

St Albans prevented Chelmsford City from winning 3 away on the bounce with a 2-1 win to continue their inconsistent season, Shaun Jeffers finding himself on the scoresheet with a penalty, while next week’s hosts Eastbourne Borough secured a huge 2-0 win away at Welling United to move level on points with Slough at the cusp of the relegation zone, albeit with 4 more games played. Chippenham Town and W*ymouth played out a 1-1 draw to leave the noisy neighbours hovering above the drop zone.

In the final two games of the day, Braintree Town moved themselves back into the playoff spots with a 1-0 win over Aveley, who now find themselves winless in the league in their last 7 games. Finally, under their new management of Jake Leberl and Mike Sandmann, Dover Athletic held playoff contenders Bath City to a 0-0 result.

National League tables!

With Yeovil out of that pesky FA Trophy, it allowed us time to catch up with some league football! Following the entertaining 2-2 draw away to Dartford today, let’s take a look at what else happened with our fellow NLS combatants in both the league, and the FA Trophy.

We’ll start with the league action, where only 2 other games took place today, and they were absolute corkers! The main event took place in Worthing, where they played out a 4-4 thriller with St Albans City, ex-Glover Shaun Jeffers finding himself on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, a current Glover, Malachi Linton, made an appearance off the bench for Taunton, as they thrashed Farnborough 4-0 at home. Truro City and Dover Athletic was postponed before kick-off due to an unplayable surface.

Into the FA Trophy, and we’ll cover the pick of the round first, where Chippenham Town defeated Gloucester City in a 5-3 cracker at home. The National League North visitors put up a decent fight but the attacking threat of Matt McClure and Craig Fasanmade was too much for them. Another thumping for a fellow NLS competitor came in Frome, where Torquay United won 4-1 away from home to book their place in the next round.

There were one or two “cupsets” involving NLS sides, for the better and for the worse. Bath City and Hampton & Richmond both pulled off wins over National League opposition in the shapes of Boreham Wood and Southend United respectively, while on the other end of the spectrum, W*ymouth were knocked out by Hendon.

Welling United 1-1 Brackley Town (Welling won 4-3 on pens)

With the 243rd West Country derby now in the history books, it was the mighty Glovers who took the win, their 14th win of the season handing them a 6 point lead at the top WITH a game in hand! Let’s see what happened elsewhere on a wet midweek of football.

Action in the National League South was spread across 3 days, starting with the regular Monday night fixture for Aveley. They hosted Welling United, who found themselves down to 10 men in the 39th when goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook was sent off. Midfielder Antony Papadopoulos was subbed on and took the gloves for the remainder of the game, and did a good job, as Aveley could only muster a 2-2 draw!

The rest of the action came on Tuesday night, and we start with Weston-super-mare, who made it 4 wins in a row by hammering Worthing, the 4-0 scoreline sending the hosts up to 11th. Torquay United continued their revival in form by handling W*ymouth with ease, a stunning free-kick from Brett McGavin among the 3 home goals in their 3-1 victory. Meanwhile, Maidstone handled visitors Truro City in a 2-1 win, sending home the 22 visiting fans who made the 10 hour, 600 mile round trip on Tuesday night, huge credit to them!

Chippenham Town travelled to Hemel Hempstead and left as 2-0 winners, the win elevating the Bluebirds just above the hosts to 14th. The final game of the night was a 1-1 draw between Hampton & Richmond and Braintree Town, where a 94th minute Ben Seymour penalty rescued a point for the high flying hosts, who sit in 3rd.

There was a final match, meant to be played on Tuesday, but once again, Taunton were meant to play but their game against Slough was postponed and will be rescheduled.

Well, the run has come to an end… it was wonderful while it lasted, but the journey for the Glovers ends in the second round at the hands of Wrexham. Let’s see what else went down this weekend for all the other NLS sides.

We begin with the FA Cup, where there was only one other NLS side remaining in the form of Maidstone. They did what we couldn’t, by defeating League 2 opposition in a major upset! They beat Barrow 2-1 at home to book their spot in the 3rd Round against either Stevenage or Port Vale, both in League 1.

Into the league fixtures now, and there were tons of goals to talk about! Aveley and Farnborough played out a 3-4 barnstormer, with the hosts conceding three times in the final 15 minutes to hand the Yellows their first away win of the season. Another classic took place at the Draper Tools Community Stadium, where Havant & Waterlooville registered their second win of the season, and their second 4-3 win of the season, holding off a late comeback from Dover Athletic to close the gap between the bottom two to 3 points.

Weston-super-mare brought Welling United back down to earth with a thud, as they ran out 4-2 winners, former Glovers Reuben Reid grabbing a brace, while a game full of action at Wednesday’s hosts Bath City ended in Chelmsford City‘s favour. 3 penalties (2 for Bath, 1 for Chelmsford), a red card for Chelmsford and also an own goal in favour of Chelmsford (keeping up?) meant they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2!

Down in Plymouth, Truro City lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win over St Albans City, while an Ollie Pearce hattrick handed Worthing all 3 points at home to Chippenham Town. In the comparatively dull final fixtures of the day, both Hampton & Richmond and Torquay United registered 2-1 wins to continue their playoff pushes, over Hemel Hempstead and Tonbridge Angels respectively.

There was one postponed fixture due to the chilly weather, and one abandoned mid-game due to bad weather, with Braintree Town and Weymouth not even getting underway, while Eastbourne Borough and Taunton Town was abandoned at the half-time mark, Taunton winning 2-1 at that point. Rearranged dates will be announced in due time.

A tricky week for Yeovil, ending in their defeat at Welling United yesterday would normally spell disaster for the Glovers, but with a full 12 game programme on Saturday, let’s see if there’s been a real impact on the league leader’s gap at the top.

We start in Kent, where Tonbridge Angels made light work of 10-man Havant & Waterlooville, hammering the bottom-placed side 4-1 to hover just outside the playoff spots. There were also some upsets, with St Albans City pulling off an impressive 3-2 win over Maidstone, ex-Glover Shaun Jeffers finding himself on the scoresheet, while Dartford hit Torquay United for three in a first half demolition, the defeat leaving the visitors hovering in mid-table.

There were more trip-ups for frontrunners too, as Farnborough held on for a 2-2 draw at home to Bath City, while W*ymouth benefitted from a Charlee Hughes own goal to share the points at home to Aveley. Another playoff contender, Braintree Town, fell victim to a Slough Town side that were out to prove that there is life after George Alexander, who was recalled from his loan spell by Bromley only to be sent out to division rivals Dartford (Alexander scored on his debut for Dartford today).

Truro City put to rest a 7 game winless run in the league by nabbing the three points away to Chelmsford City, while Chippenham Town attempted a late comeback at home to Hampton & Richmond, but to no avail, both these games finishing in 2-1 wins for the away sides. Taunton and Worthing played out a 1-1 draw, with the hosts scoring an 88th minute equaliser, while there were two 1-0 wins for Weston-super-mare and Hemel Hempstead, over Dover Athletic and Eastbourne Borough respectively.

Yeovil will look to get back to winning ways against Wrexham in the FA Cup Second Round on Sunday, up the Glovers!

National League and National League North/South tables

Yeovil found themselves back in league action on Tuesday night, where they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Chippenham Town. With nearly a full midweek programme, let’s take a look at what went down elsewhere.

We start in Essex, where Chelmsford City played host to a 1-0 defeat to Maidstone, another goal from Levi Amantchi temporarily elevating the visitors to 2nd in the table. Chelmsford’s end to their good run causes them to fall out of the playoffs.

Onto Tuesday’s action, and we begin with Worthing registering a 3-0 win away to Farnborough, while Slough Town added further misery to Havant & Waterlooville’s season with a 91st minute winner to edge themselves away from the relegation zone. Both W*ymouth and Braintree Town registered 2-0 wins, against Truro City and Dartford respectively. Dartford will be without Paul Rooney for the Glovers’ visit, as he saw red in the first half of their defeat.

There were two 1-1 draws, with Dover Athletic hosting Eastbourne Borough, and Tonbridge Angels doing well at home against a visiting Aveley. James Morton scored an 86th minute screamer to hand Weston-super-mare a 1-0 win away to St Albans City, and in the final game from Tuesday, Hemel Hempstead and Bath City played out a 0-0 draw.

Taunton’s clash at home to Torquay United was postponed, as was Welling United’s home game against Hampton & Richmond Borough. This was due to the FA Trophy tie that was supposed to be played on Saturday.

National League and National League North/South tables

The second round of the FA Trophy began yesterday, with National League North and South teams entering the competition. Plenty of games to discuss, so let’s dive right in and look at some of the highlights (and lowlights).

22 National League South teams were in action today, and there were a few all-NLS clashes (including Yeovil’s defeat at Torquay). The highlight of the round came at Dover Athletic, who played out a 4-4 classic with W*ymouth, who won 4-1 on penalties to progress, while Slough Town handed Farnborough their second defeat of the week with a 2-1 win. In the final all-NLS clash, Dartford fell to a narrow defeat at home to Maidstone.

There were cupsets-a-plenty too, with multiple NLS sides falling at the first hurdle to lower league opposition. Hemel Hempstead lost 5-3 on penalties to 8th tier Walsall Wood, Havant & Waterlooville continued their woeful season with a 2-1 loss to AFC Totton, while Hendon knocked out Eastbourne Borough with a 2-0 win. 8th tier Frome Town defeated Worthing on penalties, as did Hythe Town against Tonbridge Angels, while Hungerford Town got the job done in 90 minutes against Truro City.

There’s only one more fixture involving NLS teams, and it’s an all-NLS clash between Welling United and Taunton, which was played on Tuesday 21st November. An enthralling 2-2 draw (in which Yeovil loanee Malachi Linton bagged a late equaliser!) went to penalties, where Welling ultimately prevailed. Yeovil’s journey ends at the first hurdle in the FA Trophy, and will look to get themselves back on track against Chippenham Town on Tuesday (who defeated Basingstoke Town on penalties).

Well, the run was fun while it lasted, but all good things must come to an end. Three Valleys Radio were there, and so was our very own Tom Bailey was there to give us his Five Conclusions on Yeovil’s exit from the FA Trophy.

Changes were a win-win. Not sure if this was just me, but I was still impressed with the majority of the changes made today by Mark Cooper. It was great to see Josh Staunton back in the side, and the same can be said for Jordan Maguire-Drew, who was my personal Man of the Match (for Yeovil at least). While it’s disappointing for the run to end, I can’t imagine this competition was high on the priority list of Mark Cooper, so resting key players like Michael Smith, Morgan Williams and Rhys Murphy was the right call.

Torquay were much improved. We can say all we want about Yeovil’s performance (which I didn’t think was that bad considering the amount of changes made), but we have to give Torquay credit where it’s due, they did a much better job than last time out at nullifying any attacking threat that came their way. Considering the only goal we scored was an own goal from a Torquay defender, they can go home with their heads held high, even with the wholescale changes for Yeovil.

Duncan Idehen had a decent debut. A baptism of fire for the 21 year old loanee, and a big gap in the defence to fill. It didn’t matter for Duncan Idehen though, who looked shaky in the opening stages of the game before growing into a dominant performance, commanding his area and putting in vital tackles to cut out attacks from the hosts. We’ve got him until the end of January, and I’m personally looking forward to seeing how he grows with us!

The pitch was… certainly something. We had concerns over the state of Yeovil’s pitch following the run of home games recently, and I think Torquay have reason to be concerned over their own. Players were slipping and sliding, and nobody really looked comfortable on a surface that was coming up from the first whistle.

Tricky conditions left quality football few and far between.

Back on track for Tuesday, then. There are positives to take from today, less games for us to think about, allowing us to focus on the league, as well as run outs and rests for a lot of players in the squad. The bus ride home was quiet but not a bad atmosphere, it was an “ah well, maybe next year” feeling, as we clearly have bigger fish to fry. Shout out to the 300+ fans that made the journey today too, plenty of noise from them!

With Yeovil registering win number 14 in a row on Tuesday night against Farnborough, let’s take a look at what else went down in a minimised running order following the weather and scheduling.

We start with 2nd-placed Aveley, who faced off against Chelmsford City on Monday night. The hosts couldn’t find a way back from two goals down, leaving them in 2nd, while the win for Chelmsford jumps them up into a playoff spot.

Onto Tuesday’s action, and the five games that were played certainly made up for the lack of fixtures! We’ll begin with Worthing, who conceded a calamitous 83rd minute goal to fall at home against Dartford, their progressive style of play perhaps coming back to bite them. Back in Essex, Braintree Town recovered from their weekend defeat to batter Welling United at home, leaving the visitors stuck in the bottom 4 with no games in hand on those around them.

Eastbourne Borough’s inconsistent start has turned into an inconsistent season, as they lost 3-0 at home to Tonbridge Angels to leave them close to the drop zone as we approach the halfway mark. And in the final fixture of the night, Maidstone condemned Dover Athletic to another defeat, Levi Amantchi finding himself back among the goals.

There were five postponed fixtures which I’m sure will be re-scheduled in good time, with Bath City v Slough Town, Hampton & Richmond Borough v St Albans City, Truro City v Taunton and Weston-super-mare v Chippenham Town all called off. Havant & Waterlooville v Hemel Hempstead Town was also postponed on Wednesday night.

I’m starting to lose count now, 13 wins in a row! While Yeovil made light work of Dover Athletic (best wishes to Peter Ojemen following his injury by the way), let’s have a look at what else happened in a goal-filled day!

We start on the outskirts of London, where Hampton & Richmond continued their brilliant run of form by ending Maidstone’s 8 game unbeaten run away from home, a Mason Bloomfield hattrick contributing to a 5-2 win to send the Beavers into 4th. Another goal-fest came in the 4-3 win for Welling United over Slough Town, Welling bagging a 91st minute winner to bring them level on points with Slough, who now sit outside the drop zone on goal difference.

The first away win to be mentioned today comes at St Albans City, where Tonbridge Angels recovered from a 2-0 deficit to leave as winners, a Jordan Greenidge double helping the Angels up to 14th. Braintree Town’s impressive run of wins (outside of the customary Yeovil defeat at this point) came to an end at the hands of Eastbourne Borough, who ran out 3-1 winners, while a massive clash at the top end of the table ended up as a one-sided affair, as Bath City inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Aveley. Cody Cooke scored a hattrick, including two penalties, as Aveley went down to 10 men in the 90th minute to compound their miserable afternoon.

Chelmsford City grabbed a 93rd minute equaliser at home to extend their unbeaten run in the league to 7 games, albeit including 5 draws, as they drew 2-2 with Chippenham Town. Meanwhile, Torquay United recovered from their midweek defeat to win 2-0 at Havant & Waterlooville, leaving the hosts 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table. Tuesday’s visitors Farnborough salvaged a point at home to W*ymouth, and in the last match of the day, Hemel Hempstead scored a 90th minute winner to defeat Taunton 1-0.

There were two fixtures that were unable to be played due to the weather, with Truro City v Dartford, and Weston-super-mare v Worthing both being postponed.
