Ben Barrett (Page 3)

Yeovil Town’s Jed Ward has thanked his team mates and fans after sweeping the vast majority of the end of season awards following the final game of the 2025/26 season.

Speaking to Mark Stillman after the game he said the result of the game could be forgiven, given the overall nature of the campaign.

“[It was a] terrible start, we weren’t at it, but again, we’ve had such a long season, such a draining season that I think the fans wouldn’t be too disappointed that it went like that.

We’ve had some tough times this season, but also some very good times, so I think we look at the season as a whole to be back in this division next season is massive for this club and I definitely think that things are definitely going to turn next year and going to be even more exciting.
You’ve got lads out of position and all that sort of stuff, hot day. They’re all excuses. I still think we should have started better but again, like I said, tough season, worked hard for a long long periods of this season and to finish it today, um, still in the league is a big achievement.”

The Bristol Rovers loanee was subbed off with a minute or two to go to a standing ovation, with over half a century of appearances to his name this season, he then took home FOUR end of season awards after the game.

“To to come off as I did with the the applause that I got, it was such a surreal feeling. We’ve been through the trenches like I said and to come off today in the sun in front of all of them it’s a nice feeling. They were immense throughout the game and and if you keep that up next season it’s just going to help the lads massively.

We joked about it throughout the week but, I didn’t think I would and then I saw Gouldie getting ready so, yeah that’s when I found out!
I think it’s 50 starts in all comps which is amazing for me, great achievement, so yeah I’m really happy with that.

It’s such a like I said surreal feeling to be recognised by this football club, by the fans, by my own players, it’s such a nice feeling and yeah I could have given it to every single one of those players, player’s player. I think they’ve been amazing with me and amazing throughout the season.
I think the cup run that we run on was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the Hartlepool game away. I thought that that summed us up as a team and when we went and fought for each other. Most of the wins have been been amazing this season.”

The awards aren’t done yet, the Glovies are yet to be crowed and surely the ‘keeper will be front and centre for those gongs too…

For one last time this season, let’s take a look at who the match officials are for the Glovers this weekend.

Andrew Humphries is the man in the middle, someone who we have had a little run in with before.

This season, he’s taken charge of 37 games across a range of divisions, mostly in League One.

In fact, he’s only looked after four games at this level all season long.

Those 39 games have seen 119 yellow cards offered (a touch over 3 per game), eight red cards and seven penalties awarded.

He has refereed a Yeovil game this season, the 2-0 away defeat to Forest Green Rovers way back in August.

Charlie Cooper, Byron Pendleton, Finn Cousin-Dawson all got a yellow card each… Jake Wannell picked up a couple of them though and as a result, a red one.

The only time he’s been to Huish Park was a 2-1 defeat against Barnet, one where there was more than a little bit of late controversy as Ed James was scythed down in the penalty area late on… with the referee perfectly positioned, he didn’t fancy making a big call against the Champions elect, and waved play on. There were questions from all in green at full time.

This though, being the something of an end of season friendly, should be a far calmer contest to keep tabs on.

Mr Humphries will be assisted by James Hooper and Thomas Holden, with Kevin Morris on fourth official duty.

All we want is a decent referee. Andrew Humphries wonders how he’s going to get out of Huish Park alive.

Yeovil Town wen’t down 3-0 away to York City at the weekend and our very own Gordon Banks in goal once again collected your MOTM votes.

Jed Ward has now won the last three MOTM votes in a row, and takes his seasonal tally to 21 1st place finishes from your votes (from a total of 50)!

(a further 15 times he’s finished 2nd or 3rd on your votes – so, on 36 occasions out of 50, he’s made the podium)

Dan Ellison continues to impress following his return to the side from being out on loan with Will Merry’s taking the bronze medal spot.

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED – WE WILL REVEAL THE WINNERS ON NEXT WEEK’S PODCAST (MON 4TH MAY)

York City go in to the final day top of the pile after a 3-0 win over a patched up Yeovil Town side who finish their away day schedule with a bit of a damp squib in North Yorkshire, here are Ben’s Five Conclusions.

We showed relatively good discipline in defence.

York have an abundance of quality in every department and move the ball with such ease and pace in the opposition half the result itself was probably no great shock. But, with so many players missing and literally nothing to play for, I was pleased with how the back three (or five) and those in front of them kept their shape and discipline in the first half to nullify the waves of attack – for the most part – not pretty, but it really was the only way we could go about it.

Brett McGavin and Dan Ellison | Pic by Gary Brown

Tired legs, tired minds.

We’re knackered. Properly knackered, and I know we’ve been saying it for weeks (months?) but I think this was the first time I’d seen tired minds too. We didn’t play to the whistle for the first goal (more on that in a moment), and assumed the play would stop for the second ball on the field, countless times we lost a battle and you could see it take that little bit longer to fight back into position. We made two or three excellent blocks in the area by players who had made the error to create the chance for York. Effort remained high, execution wasn’t always there.

The ref wasn’t very good.

In a game with such an imbalance, you need an official who keeps things level. Mr Drysdale played the occasion more than once.

The two ball situation was odd because both were in the same area of play, should Yeovil have played to the whistle? Yes. Should there have been a whistle? Probably. Would there have been a whistle if the teams attacking were reversed? Almost certainly.

Josh Stones got a yellow card for an early challenge that fit an ‘orange card’ on another occasion that’s given as a red. There’s definitely contact on Will Merry in the penalty area, he makes a lot of it, but it’s a penalty. Ollie Banks got three or four final warnings before finally getting booked for being a constant menace off the ball, there was a definite handball in the build up to the second goal. Sour grapes, yeah sure, but the least you want is a level playing field. It’s hard not to feel harshly treated.

Page showed what we might have been missing.

What a pleasant little cameo from Jonathon Page. Some neat little touches in midfield, a real little terrier attitude in the battle, against some giants he more than put himself about and you have to wonder if he might have been something of an asset all along had he been fit.

Merry showed why he’s an option beyond this season

Will Merry didn’t really get into the game first half, playing right in front of the dugouts, he had a tough time getting on the ball, but in the second period he really upped it getting at the York defence on a number of occasions. The more I see of him the more I think he’s exactly the sort of player who we should be looking at to supplement our attack next season, glides with the ball, attack minded and has a physical element to his game too.

Will Merry on the attack

I could write about Jed Ward being ridiculous for the level, but you knew that. I could write about 200+ fans in the away end who drew praise from the home side’s press pack at the end of the game, but you knew that. I could talk about our injury problems mounting up again with McCoy-Splatt’s shoulder popping out, but you knew that.

I’m exhausted (you knew that too), the lads are exhausted, the gaffer is exhausted, let’s get this post-season friendly against Solihull out the way and get next season rolling… after a little nap though, yeah?
