Glovers’ ‘keeper Grant Smith

Yeovil Town Goalkeeper, Grant Smith has praised the defensive unit that has proved so strong this season.

The Glovers have conceded just 25 goals during the league season, one of the best defensive records in the division.

speaking ahead of the Solihull game, the a Number 1 was proud of the team’s efforts.

We don’t concede many chances, a lot of the games where we’ve kept clean sheets, I’ve barely had a save to make, we work very hard on that.”

‘Shakira Hips’ Smith said that whilst he used to set himself targets for clean sheets that was no longer the case as he preferred to keep his focus elsewhere it did admit to the Gloverscast, he’s been known to celebrate a save like a goal and enjoys a scrappy 1-0 win more than most.

For a goalkeeper, nothing beats a 1-0 win, everyone would love to win four or five-nil and have an easy win, but when you walk off the pitch at the end of the game having dug in for that last 30 minutes, they’ve been throwing absolutely everything at you and you’ve kept a clean sheet, it makes you feel like you’ve done a god job”

That one on one save in the Stevenage game, I did celebrate it like a goal, I think it comes down to an important save at an important time, it wasn’t necessarily an unbelievable save, it was just an important moment in that game.”

Smith praised Luke Wilkinson for his consistency, Morgan Williams for his flexibility in different roles and Ben Barclay for the way he’s settled into the side but finished by saying that the side were up for the challenge of keeping Solihull’s front men out.

It’s a good challenge, everyone wants to challenge themselves against the best in the league… But we take it for face value and give them all the respect”

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll said his side deserved to win the game against W*ymouth after coming from a goal down to secure a point.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Sheridan Robins, Sarll admitted the first half needed improving on, but that his side probably deserved to take all three points.

He said: “After that second half there’s only one team who deserved to win the game, in terms of goal mouth entries – they had one good chance in the second half – but apart from that they’ve had the mistake that we’ve made (for the goal) and one very good chance [in the] second half.

We’ve had multiple entries and I said to them, you need to take heart from the second half, but understand we have got to make it like that for 90 minutes.”

Adi Yussuf forced the ball goalwards for the Glovers’ equaliser, and could have won the game with the final kick of the game, but couldn’t quite send the manager “flying down the touchline” in celebration.

“I thought we deserved to win the game”, continued Sarll, “just for oohs and aaahs, I thought we deserved to win the game because our intent early on was to win the game and we have to be a lot more composed and try and bring out – and try and bring out – those creative instincts in the players.”

There was praise for the constant threat offered by Charlie Wakefield who was described as the “find of the F-ing century” as well as the introduction of Reuben Reid who both posed a threat for the hosts, as well as the returning Lawson D’ath.

“His footballing intelligence is excellent, really excellent, I loved having him back out there, he does give us that genuine opportunity to play with two midfielders like when [Josh] Staunton is available, and he gives us a way, a vision – he can pick a pass and pick someone out.

When you’ve got receivers like Wakefield, Adi and Reuben and Tom Knowles you need someone who is going to be able to distribute the ball.”

Yeovil are back in action hosting Solihull Moors on Saturday kicking off at 3pm

Yeovil Town left/right/centre back Morgan Williams has been named in the official Vanarama Team Of the Week

Williams was part of the Glovers defence which held out for three vital points against Woking.

Williams joins the likes of Andrew Dallas from Stockport and Halifax’s Billy Waters in the team.

Congratulations Morgan!

Glovers’ defender Morgan Williams has said that the team are looking forward to renewing rivalries with W*ymouth on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the BBC after the Weekend’s game with Woking he said that he couldn’t wait for the game.

We’re happy to get the three points (against Woking) but we can focus on the big game on Tuesday night”

“I’m really excited, hopefully we do the performance we did today and get the three points.”

“Three points every week would be massive and beating W*ymouth would be massive for us”

Williams, who has played in just about every position across the back four says the team are taking the rest of the season game by game and is willing to play wherever the team needs in the hunt for the next three points.

Yeovil Town manager Darren Sarll, is looking forward to renewing the derby rivalry with W*ymouth.

Speaking ahead of the weekend’s game against Woking to the Gloverscast he said he was excited to give the fans a performance to be proud of.

They are brilliant games, I get quite nervous for them but that is because I know the importance of them.”

“That penalty shoot-out (in the FA Cup) was horrendous, I questioned my faith!

David (Oldfield, W*ymouth manager) has gone in there and he’s a very good coach, they will have a different energy and strategy in them, it will be a different contest.”

“They have closed the gap with us from previous years.
Last season we were heavily dominant, but we will have to make sure we are well recovered from Woking.”

Sarll was hopeful of a positive result not just for the fans, but also to avoid having to work the players on Wednesday – which just so happens to be his 39th birthday.

Great games and supporters just make sure everyone gets there safe and goes home safely.”

“Birthdays don’t exist in football seasons. I will be grateful to get there in the current climate, it’s my 21st season in professional football – I probably look 49!
I’ll soon be up for the big 4-0! The players bring cakes in, I don’t know if I will though.”

“If we don’t win on Tuesday, we’ll be in (on Wednesday) and I’ll get a barrage of abuse from my wife and then that comes back on to them.”

Tom Knowles, who has five goals so far this season.

The Football Association have confirmed the one-match suspensions of Mark Little and Tom Knowles.

Little was shown two yellow cards on Saturday against Woking, whilst Tom Knowles picked up his fifth booking of the season in the same game… his first one since mid-October.

Knowle’s booking has been listed as a “Time Wasting – Delaying the Restart” booking, hence Darren Sarll’s “dopey” comment post match.

With the Glovers having now completed 23 league games the ‘5-yellow card’ suspension rules has ended with those picking up their tenth still expected to miss two games.

Both Little and Knowles will be absent for the visit of W*ymouth on Tuesday night but will be available again at the weekend.

Yeovil Town have announced the loan signing of central defender Ben Barclay from National League leaders Stockport County.

Barclay, 25, joins the Glovers on a short term deal for a month and will be in the squad for the match against Woking.

Speaking the club’s official website, the former Brighton youngster said: “It’s all happened relatively quickly, I spoke to the manager a few days ago, he showed interest and I was open to coming out on loan and playing some football. I got here yesterday (Thursday) and I’m ready to go today (Friday).

“I’ve seen that the club has done well during the start of the season, obviously there’s been a little bit of a blip recently, but I want us to get back on track and climb back up the table.”

Barclay played the first half in Stockport County’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Glovers earlier in the season, but hasn’t featured in any games since County lost 1-0 to Rotherham in the FA Cup back in early December.

The Cup defeat is the only match he has started since Dave Challinor took over from Simon Rusk in Greater Manchester. Rusk and Barclay had worked together in the youth set-up at Barclay.

Indeed, it was Rusk who brought him to Stockport in the summer following his release from League One side Accrington Stanley, where he made 36 appearances in a two-season spell.

When Yeovil manager Darren Sarll faces the media this morning, we hope to receive an update on the fitness of captain Luke Wilkinson, who it is hoped will be back from a hamstring strain to for the trip to Woking, and midfielder-turned-defender Josh Staunton, who limped off in last weekend’s home defeat to Wrexham.

Welcome to Huish Park, Ben!

The Football Associations of England and Wales have announced a Wales C v England C game for March 30th, played at Caernarfon Town FC

The England C side has been known in previous incarnations as the ‘England Semi Pro XI’ or ‘National Game XI’ but is now mostly made up of full time professionals from the National League system

Yeovil Town have famously been well represented at international level during our previous stint in Non League but due to obvious reasons these games haven’t take place since the 2019/20 season.

England C Manager Paul Fairclough, who has managed Barnet no fewer tha five times, including last year will announce his squad soon, which could, in theory, include some Glovers.

The last squad, back in 2019 included no one over the age of 25 and had such names as former Yeovil players Kabongo Tshimanga and Brandon Goodship in.

They were captained by Laurence ‘Brother Of’ Maguire and were held to a 2-2 by their Welsh league counterparts

Anyone who fancies seeing Charlie Wakefield, Tom Knowles or Jordan Barnett wearing the Three Lions needs to start the “Are you watching Paul Fairclough” chants pretty soon!

Former Yeovil Town striker Joe Quigley has spoken as a Chesterfield player for the first time confirming that promotion was the aim for league leaders, but also that the deal taking him from Huish Park to the Technique Arena had been ongoing for a little while.

Speaking to Chesterfield YouTube channel, in an interview recorded of Friday, he said:

“I spoke to the gaffer (James Rowe) a couple of days ago, and obviously I knew about it last week.

“So, it’s been a bit long trying to get it done, but now it’s done, I’m delighted to be here.”

The interview went on to speak about how much he was looking forward to playing for his new club and how he knew Jack Clarke from their time together at Yeovil last season.

Quigley missed the FA Trophy exit at the hands of lower league Needham Market due to “illness”.

Glovers’ boss Darren Sarll said not ten hours before Quigley’s move was announced that no offers had been accepted for any of the Glovers players during the month of January, so maybe the timelines don’t quite add up somewhere.

Following the 2-1 to Wrexham on SaturdaySarll said of the departing Quigley: “That’s the fourth forward I’ve sold (Hippolyte – Scunthorpe, Duffus – Morecambe and Lloyd – QPR) we obviously improve people, we try and improve people with our coaching but yeah, I’d have liked him today.”

Quigley scored 18 goals in 53 league appearances for the Glovers, including seven this season.

Yeovil will travel to Derbyshire to play Chesterfield on Saturday, February 26.

Yeovil Town’s Under-18s have progressed through to the final 16 of the ECFA’s Knockout College Cup following a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Truro and Penwith College.

Two of the goals were scored by Ollie Haste (pictured) with two other scorers and an own goal getting on the score sheet as well.

The young Glovers will play Merthyr Tydfil College in the next round, matches will be played on or before February 9th, with a potential final at Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster just four wins away.
