Sam Pearson

Chris Hargreaves had special praise for loan duo Sam Perry and Sam Pearson following the Glovers’ 1-1 draw with Wrexham.

Perry, on loan from Walsall, impressed after a difficult debut and speaking exclusively to the Gloverscast’s Ian Perkins the gaffer said how pleased he was with the young midfielders showing.

“As a midfielder especially – I was a midfielder, so I’m probably harder on midfielders, once you get into the game and into a passing rhythm you become a different player”.

“When that first couple of passes comes off you work your way into the game, I said the same to Worthy (Matt Worthington) at half time.

I thought both midfielders were outstanding, they worked their socks off, very pleased with that but would like them to chip in with goals.”

Pearson & Matty Grivosti

As for Pearson, on loan from Bristol City, Hargreaves was pleased with his ability to step up to this level.

It’s a big jump for Sam to come into such a big environment and such a big game. He’s been playing (Under) 23s football at a very good club in Bristol City but its very different.

He was excellent, he was bright, his legs had given up on him so we had to give him a rest, but he showed enough to show he’s a very talented footballer with a bright future”

Ollie Haste at Truro ? Truro City YouTube

Two of Yeovil Town’s loan players clocked up more valuable minutes for their temporary clubs on Saturday.

Defender Ollie Haste played the full 90 minutes for Truro City in a convincing 4-0 home win over Dorchester Town.

Whilst goalkeeper Max Evans was once again in action for Larkhall Athletic.

The Larks went down 1-0 at home against Tavistock AFC with the Larkhall social media team praising Evans for his performance between the sticks.

Toby Stephens remains yet to play a competitive game for Truro, he joined at the same time as Ollie Haste, played as a trialist against Torquay, but has not figured since.

Next up, Evans’ Larks travel to Bishop’s Cleeve in the Southern League Division One South on Tuesday night, whilst Truro face Poole Town on Wednesday.

Maybe it’s the heat, but I cannot for the life of me put a Fisher and Pond joke together, anyway…

Alfie Pond

Yeovil Town have announced the loan signing of Exeter City’s Alfie Pond.

The central defender had been on loan with Tiverton Town during the 2021-22 season with Grecians’ gaffer Matty Taylor describing him as someone who “is going to be a serious player” following his first team debut in a JPT game.

6ft 3, Pond becomes the 6th Glovers loanee meaning one of Sam Pearson, Sam Perry, Will Buse, Finley Craske, Matty Grivosti and Pond will have to sit out of each match day squad as per FA rules only permitting five in a match day squad.

He has been linked with Celtic and Rangers in the past with Exeter’s academy regularly on the big clubs’ scouting lists after numerous successes.

Commenting on the loan move, Hargreaves said; “Alfie is certainly an exciting prospect, but he’s someone who we believe can make an impact now.

“He’s proven he can make the step up to men’s football whilst at Tiverton, and will become another valuable member of our squad.”

There were no details of the length of the teenager’s loan agreement in Somerset, however, at tweet from Exeter suggests he is with us until January.

Here’s hoping for a successful stint in green and white.

Welcome Alfie!

Yeovil Town’s loan duo of Max Evans and Ollie Haste made competitive debuts for their new sides on Saturday.

Max Evans makes his Larkhall Debut
? Jeremy Richards

Haste played the full 90 minutes for Truro City in a 3-1 win at London-based Hanwell Town in Southern League Premier South, playing with number 6 on his back.

There was no place in the squad for fellow Glovers’ loanee Toby Stephens.

Goalkeeper Evans got his first taste of action at Larkhall Athletic who got their FA Cup campaign underway with a 4-1 home win over Folland Sports in the extra preliminary round tie.

The Southern League Division One South side found themselves a goal behind after 20 minutes to what their Twitter feed described as “a rather soft penalty.

They came back to lead 2-1 at half-time before adding to the score in the second half.

Well, we are off and running for the 2022/23 season and the outcome of the opening game wasn’t what any of us were hoping for.

Ben was there for BBC Somerset and has rattled his brain for some thoughts.

Having watched the game against Scunthorpe from the press box at Glanford Park I feel like I could have 10 conclusions and narrowing them down to five key ones isn’t going to be easy.

However, we will have a go.

Firstly. 3-5-2… simply didn’t work.

It’s a thoroughly boring subject to most people if you want to get deep into the nuances of tactics and their pros and cons, at its best, with plenty of the ball and a rock solid spine, 3-5-2 is lovely.

Wing backs flying forward, crosses galore and plenty of extra bodies in wide areas.

At its worst… well, it looked like that first 50-odd minutes.

Two huge holes of space where full backs would normally be gave Liam Feeney and others all the time in the world to create and attack.

It made players like Morgan Williams move out of position and kept Charlie Wakefield far too defensive.

It might be better at home when we have more possession, but it cannot be the go-to set up with that personnel.

However, credit where its due, the change to bring on Pearson and the switch to 442 sparked us into life.

This is something of a double header conclusion actually because I am really excited to see what Pearson brings to this side during his time with us.

Fearless, exciting, quick, direct, strong and powerful. More of that please, he has to start against Wrexham.

The ‘jekyll and hyde’ performance showed just how important the senior players will be.

Staunton probably didn’t have his best game in a midfield that was getting overrun with ease, especially in the first half.

But Smith made big saves, Reckord was outstanding on the left and Fisher was desperately trying to make something happen and grab a moment by the scruff of the neck.

There were shaky moments for Hunt and Richards-Everton, but with time I think they can be a formidable partnership in both boxes.

It was only when I looked at the team sheet and saw a very youthful bench did it really hit home how much we need some significant and senior players in the door

The match was crying out for Lawson D’Ath, how amazing would it have been to bring a senior front man on instead of a young lad who has goals at Warrington Town on his CV and not a lot more. I’m excited by the young lads; Grivosti, Perry, Pearson, Craske, Hulbert etc etc, but we cannot be asking them to save us or win us games.

I’ve got to end on a positive note haven’t I?

What I saw in the first half was a shell shocked, undercooked, rabbit-in-the-headlight side who didn’t know if they were coming or going. But, the last 20 minutes showed me enough that there’s something to build on, to learn from, to be excited about, to get behind.

We did look dangerous and if Alex Fisher’s studs were longer or their keeper doesn’t pull off a couple of good late saves, we would be talking about a point or maybe even three. It’s a big week coming up for a lot of people at Huish Park, that’s for sure.

Morgan Williams. ? Mike Kunz.

For those who care about these kind of things, (it’s got to be more than just Ben, right!?) Yeovil have confirmed the squad numbers for the upcoming season.

They are as follows;

1 – Grant Smith

2 – Morgan Williams

3 – Jamie Reckord

5 – Max Hunt

6 – Ben Richards-Everton

7 – Matt Worthington

8 – Lawson D’Ath

9 – Alex Fisher

12 – Max Evans (on loan at Larkhall AFC)

14 – Malachi Linton

15 – Sam Pearson

16 – Sam Perry

17 – Chiori Johnson

18 – Finley Craske

19 – Charlie Wakefield

20 – Will Buse

21 – Toby Stephens (on loan at Truro City)

22 – Ollie Hulbert

24 – Matt Grivosti

29 – Ollie Haste (on loan at Truro City)

32 – Josh Staunton (captain)

Morgan Williams switches from 13 to 2, which is his 4th different number as a Glovers player with loan spells seeing him wear 17 and 29 – can anyone think of any Yeovil player to match that!?

No number 10 or 11 is currently listed after Joe Quigley and Tom Knowles’ numbers were vacated, whilst the latest duo of loan signings Will Buse (20) and Matt Grivosti (24) are assigned their first squad numbers for the club.

None of the other retained members of the squad have switched their numbers, good news for anyone who got a player on the back of a replica shirt last season.

Pearson & Grivosti

Yeovil Town have announced the signing of Bolton attacker Matty Grivosti on a youth loan.

A winger by trade, the former Warrington man made a permanent switch to Bolton in the summer having impressed in the same College team played in by Ollie Haste and coached by Chris Todd.

Chris Hargreaves told YTFC.net

Matt arrives as an exciting addition to our group. He’s shown a real maturity in front of goal at such a young age.

“He is an individual who is already battle-hardened, from competing and thriving within the Northern Premier League at such a young age, that is a huge testament to him. He has all the attributes to make a big impact here.“

The length of the deal has not been disclosed, but its expected he’ll be available for the opening game against Scunthorpe on Saturday evening.

Welcome to Huish Park, Matty.

Will Buse. Picture courtesy of bcfc.co.uk.

Yeovil Town have confirmed the addition of Bristol City goalkeeper Will Buse ahead of the season opener against Scunthorpe.

Joining on a season-long loan, the keeper will challenge Grant Smith for the number one spot following the temporary departure of Max Evans on loan to Larkhall Athletic.

Speaking about the departure of Evans and Buse, manager Chris Hargreaves said: “Both these loans are crucial for the development of each individual.

“Firstly with Max, he is at a stage where he needs to be out there playing games on a consistent basis. He can only learn so much on the training pitch, so this loan is the next stage in his development.

“We all think very highly of Max and know he will return an even better player.

“Obviously with Max departing, there is a need for another goalkeeper in the squad. Will arrives as the perfect candidate to bolster the goalkeeping department.

“As a local lad, his connection to the club was a huge draw, but more importantly, he is a very good goalkeeper as those who watched our friendly against Taunton saw.

“He is strong competition for Grant Smith and will go into the squad for Saturday’s game.”

Buse, played against the Glovers in pre-season for Taunton Town, where he was expecting to spend the season, but after being recalled is now a Yeovil player.

Will, is a direct relative of Matt who has spent the summer on trial at Huish Park, but at time of writing hasn’t been given a deal.

Welcome to Yeovil, Will.

Glovers’ Ollie Haste
Pic From @yeovilcollege

Yeovil Town have confirmed that youngsters Toby Stephens and Ollie Haste have joined Truro City on ‘short-term’ loans.

We brought you the new last week that Stephens represented Truro as a trialist in their defeat to Torquay, but Haste was also involved and will be joining Paul Wotton’s side alongside the midfielder.

Speaking to YTFC.net Chris Hargreaves said: “Toby and Ollie are both young lads we think very highly of, who need consistent minutes to improve.

“The step up from U18’s into the National League is never easy, so having a loan move with a fantastic club like Truro will help them bridge that gap and see them return as better players.”

We will do our very best to keep you updated on their progress.

All the best at Truro, lads.

We here at the Gloverscast have done the leg work for you and scoured the internet (well, Instagram) for some of the previews and predictions for the upcoming season and here’s what we found.

Four Four Two Magazine
Yeovil Town Prediction – 11th

Ok, solid start, slightly above midtable which seems reasonable.
The magazine’s season preview pull out suggests a “low-key” start to the summer recruitment offers little inspiration towards a more positive outcome.

Racing Post – Big Season Preview Pull Out
Yeovil Town Prediction – Urm… Not mentioned

We assume this means ‘somewhere in midtable’ as we clearly aren’t in the reckoning for promotion or relegation.

They do suggest, Wrexham will win the league, Torquay will get promoted with them, Dagenham and Woking both also making the top seven.

@NL.HUB on Instagram
Yeovil Town Prediction – 12th

The first of our prediction table has the Glovers finishing slap bang in the middle of the division with Chesterfield (and that man Quigley) winning the league.

Notts County are the side that have going up via the play-offs with Scunthorpe set for the double drop.

Yeovil Town Prediction – 19th

Time for anothe 1-24 now and this time, we’re not happy. 19th!? Nineteenth!?

Not sure many will be happy with a relegation scrap that ends that close… but again, Wrexham aren’t winning the league here either.

It’s the end of the road for Dorking, Aldershot, Maidstone and Gateshead.

Edward Walker – Podcast Host D3D4Football
Yeovil Town Prediction – 14th

Yet again Wrexham aren’t winning the league, but again, unfortunatley it’s the bottom half of the table for the Glovers…
Another preview where Scunthorpe sit dangerously close to the drop zone.

Yeovil Town Prediction – 23rd

Ok, now we are getting silly – the full preview can be read HERE

The overall thoughts of the author read “I believe they have one of the weakest squads in the divison” Behave.

I didn’t read the rest of the preview.

There’s probably more out there, so feel free to point them in our direction.

But, as you can see, no-one has a clue what the season will look like at Huish Park, Play-offs, Mid table, and apparently, second-from-bottom are all possibilities…
