Ben Barrett (Page 113)

Yeovil Town’s most prolific goalscorer is heading out on loan.

Charlie Bateson has joined Tiverton on a dual registration deal which will see the attacker eligible to also represent the Glovers’ U18s.

Bateson has clocked up plenty of goals in the academy set up including back to back hat tricks a few weeks ago.

He was in the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup squad for the defeat to Paulton and now heads out for more first team experience.

We will do our best to keep you up to date with Charlie’s form with our regular loan watch feature, starting tomorrow when Tiverton host Chesham in the Southern League Premier South.

Go well, Charlie

Will Dawes’ one month loan spell at our Claret and Blue friends over the Dorset border won’t be extended beyond it’s inital month.

In his pre-match press conference, the National League South struggler’s manager Bob Wilkinson confirmed, Dawes would return to Huish Park.

Neil Walton, of the Dorset Echo reported that Wilkinson said that Will had “done nothing wrong”.

Dawes has been absent from recent squads due to the Terras having too many loans, and was the sole goal scorer (and for a short time, goal keeper) for the Glovers in the midweek defeat to Paulton Rovers in the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup.

In total, Dawes played just three times for his temporary side, without scoring.

Still, at least we won’t have to keep mentioning W*ymouth in our loan watch articles, I suppose.

It wasn’t a good night for Yeovil as the Glovers crashed out of the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup at the hands of Paulton Rovers, however a record was broken on the night.

Ollie Haste became the youngest player in history to lead Yeovil Town out in a men’s first team fixture as captain.

The youngster, at just 18 years and 10 months old broke the record held by goalkeeper Nathan Baxter back in 2019 when he was named skipper for a game in League Two at the age of a little over 20.

Our very own historical oracle, Nigel Dyson failed to find any younger captains, neither could we… so we are calling it a new record.

Huge congratulations to Ollie, and his family, for this brilliant achievement.

Just the one Yeovil Town player out on loan this Tuesday, with Ollie Hulbert racking up another 90 minutes for Leamington.

Unfortunately, his side were on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat to Buxton a result which drops the Brakes to 22nd in the National League North.

Plymouth Parkway were also in action, but Toby Stephens was not involved in the match day squad, Parkway were 3-0 victors over Dorchester.

There will be no repeat heroics of the 2022 Somerset Men’s Premier Cup triumph as Paulton eliminate Yeovil at the Quarter Final Stage

Mark Cooper named a fairly inexperienced side with plenty of representation from the club’s Under 18 side.

Ollie Haste was the Glovers captain for the evening with only Charlie Wakefield, Malachi Linton and Jordan Young regularly making the first team squad from the outfielders.

Paulton opened the scoring on 35 minutes when Dan McBeam found the net.

Chances came and went for the Glovers with the best of them falling the way of Linton and Will Dawes, who was returning from W*ymouth having not featured for his loan side for a little while.

Despite the introduction of both Benjani Jr and Charlie Bateson, the equaliser proved elusive.

That was until 80 minutes, Dawes found the back of the net from the spot after the impressive Haste won the spot kick.

But parity was only short lived as in the 85th minute David O’Hare scored from an Ed Butcher cross.

Salt was shortly added to the wounds as Will Buse was shown a late red card for the Glovers after handling outside his box.
Goalscorer Will Dawes donned the Gloves for the final few minutes.

The game finished without further drama, with the Glovers departing their final cup competition of the season.

Paulton head into the final four, whilst Mark Cooper will prep a much more experienced side for the arrival of Notts County on Saturday.

Another Saturday in the books for the Glovers out on loan and a familiar theme is starting to unfold with results not going the way of their adopted sides.

Still, plenty of match day minutes to talk about…

Let’s start at Leamington where striker Ollie Hulbert played the full 90 in a 3-1 defeat at Bradford (Park Avenue), his side were reduced to ten men just before the hour mark and couldn’t recover. Sam Perry and Ted Cann, both formerly on the books at Yeovil, were also in the Leamington side.

To those who missed out, Ollie Haste was back on the Truro bench after his successful return to the Glovers’ Under-18s side in the National League Cup in midweek, but it was the bench where he stayed as Paul Wotton’s men picked up a 1-0 away win at Gosport Borough. The White Tigers are second in the Southern League Premier Division table, two points behind Weston-super-Mare.

Will Dawes didn’t play for that Claret and Blue lot either. He was, once again, one of the unlucky extra loanees with only five named in the match day squad… W*ymouth lost 2-1 at Hemel Hempstead (maybe try picking your Green and White striker next time, just saying). The seagull bothering lot remain second from bottom of the National League South table.

Sherborne Town were without a fixture, so Benjani Junior and Jake Graziano were both left thumb twiddling this Saturday afternoon. Both played for the Yeovil Under-18s in midweek with Benji on the scoresheet.

However, goalkeeper Rob Hollard and Sam Hodges were both back in the Gillingham side, but ended up on the wrong side of a 4-1 loss away at Bristol Telephones.

Finally, Toby Stephens clocked up an hour for Plymouth Parkway as they drew 0-0 with Hartley Whitney.

Most of these sides have games this coming Tuesday, but with Yeovil in Somerset Men’s Premier Cup action at Paulton Rovers on Tuesday night, it remains to be seen how many of the dual registration lads are with their parent club rather than the first team.

Just when you thought postponed matches were a thing of the past this season, the on loan Glovers had another frustrating night.

Sherborne were meant to be playing Shepton Mallet, but Benjani Jr and Jake Graziano will have to wait as that game bit the frost.

Leamington were all set for a clash against Buxton, but a frozen pitch saw to that, Ollie Hulbert will have to wait for more game time.

W*ymouth did play, but Will Dawes did not, he fell foul of the “6th loanee” stipulation at the weekend, and that appears to be the same this midweek.

Truro didn’t have a game, Gillingham Town did though.

Rob Hollard played in the game against Bishops Lydeard, but Sam Hodges sat out – he is expected to be part of the Yeovil Under 18s National Cup team on Wednesday.

More positive news from Plymouth Parkway too,

Toby Stephens was back in the starting line up and clocked up 60 minutes before being replaced in their game against Merthyr a last minute winner secured all three points for Parkway.

Shall we try again on Saturday?

Alex Fisher has found a plaice in the official Vanarama Team of the Week after his wonder -ish against Maidstone on Saturday.

Originally credited with both of the Glovers goals, the front man was reduced to just a single strike after the dubious goals panel realised, he got nowhere near the other one… which is fine.

He makes the team alongside former Yeovil midfielder Dale Gorman, who by all accounts, didn’t absolutley sky a couple of long range free kicks… who knew!?

Congratulations Alex!!

You’ve just got over the 90th minute Huish Park equaliser heartbreak and you’re thinking to yourself: “I wonder how our loan lads got on?”

Well, don’t worry, I’ve got you. Let’s find out.

We’re starting at Plymouth Parkway where Toby Stephens was a half-time introduction for his side as Parkway pulled off a cracking 1-0 win at Salisbury. He replaced a former Glovers’ loanee, striker Ben Seymour, at the interval.

Over at Truro, more splinters in the backside for Ollie Haste, who was an unused substitute for Paul Wotton’s side.

The White Tigers thrashed Yate Town 4-0.

Off to the Bob Lucas where the Seagull Botherers picked up a big win at the bottom of the National League South over Dulwich Hamlet but Will Dawes was not named in the match day squad.

Dawes’ initial month on loan still has a couple of weeks left, but Terras’ manager Bobby Wilkinson (the one who hates Yeovil, but is happy to take our cast offs) said Dawes had fallen foul to the five loanee limit.

W*ymouth moved up a place to third from bottom of the table, but are still in the relegation zone with teams around them having games in hand.

To Leamington where Ollie Hulbert played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Blyth Spartans in National League North.

The Brakes were reduced to 10 men shortly before half time with the resulting penalty the only thing between the two sides in the end. They are now two points off the relegation places.

At Sherborne, the result went against the Zebras, going down 3-1 against Saltash United, midfielder Jake Graziano was in the starting line-up, but Benjani Junior was not named in the squad.

We wrap up at Gillingham where once again goalkeeper Rob Hollard and Sam Hodges were in the Gills’ starting line-up but FC Bristol proved too strong winning 2-0.

Plenty more matches to come for the Glovers on loan as the weeks progress.

The Football Association have confirmed the three match ban for Owen Bevan after his red card in the second half of the Glovers 0-0 draw with Wealdstone.

Referee Scott Jackson bradished his red circle of doom after a strong challenge by the Bournemouth loanee.

The suspension falls under the Category of “S1 – Serious Foul Play”, which carries an automatic three game suspension.

The defender will miss the Maidstone game on Saturday, before the home game against Notts County and the away trip to Maidenhead, which means, he won’t be available for another Glovers league game until York away on February the 25th (unless there’s any other rearrangements)

A point of note; he will be available for the Somerset Men’s Premier Cup game against Paulton on Valentine’s Day – the suspension only covers League and relevant National Cup Fixtures.

Owen Bevan sees red from referee Scott Jackson.
