March 2026 (Page 2)

Jed Ward has won enough votes throughout the month of February to be named your Gloverscast Player of the Month.

It’s the fourth time he’s taken the monthly gong, having already won August, November and December.

He was named Man of the Match three times and made the podium on three other occasions, the only time Ward wasn’t named in the top three was the 3-2 home win over Sutton Utd.

Credit to James Daly who made a late charge for the monthly prize, three Man of the Match votes of his own, but wasn’t enough to topple the on loan keeper.

Dakarai Mafico, who was Man of the Match against Rochdale, finished in third.

….in the middle of our goal.

James Daly has, for the second game in a row, been named your Man of the Match.

He opened the scoring against Southport before things, urm, went wrong later on in the game.

As happens often, Jed Ward was high in the votes two, taking second spot in the vote.

Yeovil Town boss Billy Rowley urged supporters to stick with his team after they picked up another vital three National League points with a 2-0 home win over Tamworth at Huish Park on Tuesday night.

The Glovers responded to the disappointment of Saturday’s FA Trophy exit at the hands of lower league Southport with a controlled performance which was settled by a superb solo goal from Ryan Jones just before half-time and a strike from loan defender Declan Skura ten minutes after the break.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins after the game, Rowley said: “I think it’s important to remind everyone, Darren (Simpson, assistant manager) and I, have only been here just over three months, we have not had loads of time to work with the players and the position we are in the league we have been in a little bit of a scrap at times.

Confidence was is low and it’s been hard to  really embed our ideas on the pitch and that’s natural. Being the fourth manager this season and (with the players) having had so many different voices. So, it is obviously two good (league) wins and I would say, stick by us because I feel like we’re going to come good.

Facing an organised Tamworth side, Yeovil had to bide their time to find a breakthrough and it came from a moment of magic from Jones who took a superb first touch to control a sumptuous pass from Brett McGavin, then beat two defenders who rocketing in the opener with 40 minutes on the clock.

Rowley said he had “a really good feeling” about his side from the opening minutes of the game and described Jones, who joined in mid-January, as “a wizard.” He added: “I was watching hours of him a couple of months ago. Jamie (Hedges, Yeovil’s Head of Recruitment) nudged me on him and I was watching him for ages and that’s what you see with him, like he glides with the ball. He’s very rare because he’s a left-footed player that can play on the left and still drive both ways, which is quite rare to see. He opens up a lot of options for us and he was really good tonight.

Skura added the second ten minutes after the half-time break when the on loan Wycombe Wanderers man struck home after visiting keeper Jas Singh had turned McGavin’s free-kick on to the bar.

Rowley said: “I said in my first interview when Declan arrived, once he gets fit and familiar with the place and the boys, he’s going to be a top centre-back for us and I think he’s proving that. I can’t really think of a bad game he’s had really. For him to step into the building after four or five months on the treatment table, he’s now fit, he’s feeling good and he’s able to play 90 minutes and yeah, he looks like a Rolls Royce at times.

I thought we got good early pressure on their back line and it resulted to them flipping a lot of balls in the air and I felt like we covered each other well and we dealt with first contacts well. And then I think Brett (McGavin), Dak (Mafico), and then Finn (Cousin-Dawso) when he came on were really good at mopping up and smoothing out the second ball. All-round it was really pleased with the defensive display, we were well organised and everybody’s dug in and done their job.”

The result moved Yeovil up to 14th in the National League Premier Division table and re-established an eight point gap from the relegation places with games in hand over many of the teams below them.

They face sixth-placed Scunthorpe United at Huish Park on Saturday with the Lincolnshire outfit without a midweek fixture.

Rowley said: “When you lose games things are looked at as excuses and when you win they’re reasons, but we haven’t really been able to train too much at all since the Telford game (at the end of January). All the boys have been able to do is recover, play, recover, play. We have we’ve got a few new boys in there and we’re trying to teach them through video and illustrations and we haven’t been on the grass too much. Hopefully we can get through Scunthorpe and then we willhave a whole week of being on the training ground and being more familiar with what’s being asked. But I felt like the boys delivered everything that was asked today and really happy for them.

Yeovil Town responded to the disappointment of last weekend’s FA Trophy exit with a massive three points with a dominant performance against Tamworth under the lights at Huish Park.

Ryan Jones put the Glovers ahead with a superb solo goal five minutes of the first half remaining and then on loan defender Declan Skura reacted to turn in a second after Brett McGavin’s free-kick came back off the crossbar ten minutes in to the second half.

It was the performance which was the reassuring factor in this one, unlike the late, late show against Sutton United six days earlier, Yeovil looked totally in control for the entire match.

First half

There were three changes from last weekend’s FA Trophy exit at Southport with Ryan Jones, Troy Perrett, and Aaron Jarvis all returning to the starting XI. There were boos when Jarvis’ name was read out over the tannoy ahead of the match. Whatever you think of him, that is not going to help.

From the off it was clear that Tamworth were going to be a very different test to the one they faced in their last outing at Huish Park, the late 3-2 win over Sutton United, as they start with a very rigid 4-4-2 looking to play it long towards striker Oliver Lynch. Brett McGavin pinging a couple of great passes, but not much in the way of openings for either side in the opening ten minutes.

The nearest to an opening for either side came after 19 minutes when a Mafico corner almost found James Daly on the near post and almost got his fourth in three matches with an attempted back heel. Couldn’t quite pull it off. Soon after a good free-kick in the box appeared to be missed by Declan Skura at the back post, but that was about as near as it got for either side.

Tamworth’s style is making it very narrow in the middle and it is going to take a bit of magic from either Ryan Jones or Josh Sims in the wide positions in there is going to be any joy for Yeovil. Patience and keeping switched on to the danger Tamworth offer will be key.

A great ball from McGavin picked out Jones on the left, Jarvis did well to pick up the pieces and laid it off to Troy Perrett, but his shot flashed wide. Good move, that is about as near to a clear cut chance as we have seen.

I told you it was going to take a bit of magic from Sims or Jones and on 40 minutes that is exactly what happened. Another fantastic pass picked out Ryan JONES on the left, he took an amazing first touch but then topped it by weaving past two defenders and then smashed the ball across Jas Singh and in to the far corner. Take a bow, that was special.

There was applause from Huish Park as the half-time whistle sounded. There have not been many chances in this one but we have something to build on.

Half time: Yeovil Town 1 Tamworth 0

Second half

There was a change in personnel for Yeovil Town at the start of the second half with Aaron Jarvis replaced by Finn Cousin-Dawson. It looks as if James Daly, who has three goals in his previous two games, is playing through the middle with the Cardiff City loan duo of Perrett and Mafico in behind him.

Tamworth came out after the break looking but their forward play has created space for Yeovil going forwards and one player who was exploiting it was Mafico. On 54 minutes, the youngster found such a pocket of space and was fouled just outside the area. There was a queue lining up to take it, but it was McGavin and his effort was pushed on to the bar by Singh and Declan SKURA did superbly to hammer home the rebound.

This is the response supporters wanted after the disappointment of last weekend’s FA Trophy exit and full credit for Yeovil for keeping on pushing. First goals for first Jones and now Skura.

On 65 minutes, Mafico threaded a great pass to the on-rushing Perrett who was running in to the box, the midfielder tried to take it past the defender who got it away for a corner. You just felt a first time shot was the better option, but Yeovil still going for it.

Alex Whittle replaced Josh Sims on 67 minutes with the impressive Jones switching from left to right flanks and then with the game pressing in to the final ten minutes Tahvon Campbell replaced Daly.

Campbell thought he had made an instant impact when he met a great ball in to the box from McGavin with a header, but the ‘goal’ was ruled out for a push. No real complaints from the Glovers or Tamworth, I would add.

Yeovil have controlled this second half well, there has been less of the attacking moments which we saw in the first hour of the game as the game has pressed on.

With two minutes to go, Huish Park had another nice moment as Ollie Hughes replaced Troy Perrett. At 17 years, nine months and five days he becomes the fifth youngest player to represent the Glovers in a competitive men’s league game. Devon Arnold is still the holder of the youngest at 17 years, one month and eight days. Kyle Ferguson also replaced Ryan Jones.

In the final minute of injury time another opportunity to get a third fell to Campbell. McGavin blasted it towards the near post, Singh did not deal with it and Campbell piled in looking to get a touch but it went win.

A brilliant response to last weekend’s disappointment, Yeovil controlled the game for the full 90 minutes. A goal in each half and a clean sheet and moving up the National League table. Well done, lads, that’s the stuff.

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley has told his side to “roll our sleeves up and get some results” as they take on Tamworth looking to add to their National League Premier Division points tally.

The Glovers dropped to 18th place in the division, five points above the relegation places albeit with games in hand, as they played in the FA Trophy last weekend.

Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins ahead of kick-off, Rowley said: “Sadly we are not really training that much because of the schedule. Those not familiar with a professional footballing schedule, sadly, you know, you can’t train every day. You obviously play on a Saturday, you rest on a Sunday, you recover on a Monday, and then you go play again Tuesday. So we haven’t trained anywhere near as much as I’d like and sometimes that shows on the pitch.

We need to just sort of roll our sleeves up and get some results at the moment. We’re still massively interested in playing a good brand of football and we want to like be better with the ball. But without loads of training time, that’s obviously hard.

The boss confirmed young Fulham attacker Terrell Works misses out tonight as he is suffering with the flu whilst striker Tahvon Campbell, who started the penalty shoot-out defeat at Southport in the FA Trophy last weekend, is on the bench after picking up “a slight knock on his calf.”

Rowley said: “I just tried to freshen up the legs of the team. Sadly, Terrell Works has the flu and a sore throat, so he can’t be involved tonight, which is a real shame because the last couple of games he’s been really good for us and adds a lot of creativity in the team.”

Asked about the decision to send defender Dan Ellison back out on a one-month loan to Weston-super-Mare despite the Glovers struggling for numbers, Rowley described the decision as “a bit of miscommunicated” saying Ellison’s return to the squad at Southport and immediate return to Weston was always the plan.

He said: “Dan came back just to help us out with the FA Trophy game. We obviously have a decent amount of defenders, so rather than him sit and watch us play, he obviously wants to go out and play some minutes, which he’s been doing well there. That’s it really, he’s gone back to carry on his loan.

Striker Aaron Jarvis is named in the Yeovil Town starting line-up as they prepare to take on Tamworth at Huish Park tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

The frontman, who missed from the spot in the penalty shoot-out defeat at Southport in the FA Trophy at the weekend, is joined by James Daly in the Glovers’ frontline.

Ryan Jones, who was cup-tied in the Trophy, returns to the XI alongside Cardiff City loanee Troy Perrett, who came off the bench in Merseyside.

Tahvon Campbell, Alex Whittle and Finn Cousin-Dawson, who all started three days ago, are named among the substitutes. There is no place for Fulham loanee Terrell Works, who missed the game at Southport having played for Braintree Town earlier in the competition.

As quickly as he was here, he’s gone again! Yeovil Town defender Dan Ellison has resumed his spell on loan at National League South side Weston-super-Mare for a further month.

The former Bristol Rovers player, who joined from the Memorial Stadium last October signed by former manager Richard Dryden, came on as a second half substitute in the Glovers’ penalty shoot-out exit from the FA Trophy at Southport last weekend.

He was recalled with now-boss Billy Rowley struggling for numbers due to a number of first-team regulars being cup-tied in the competition with Weston, who he initially joined last December, being without a game.

It’s back home for Yeovil Town as they take on Tamworth at Huish Park on Tuesday night.

FORM…

YEOVIL TOWN

The Glovers haven’t been in the best of form over the last five games with three losses, a win and a draw in that time. The only win during that time was last week when the Billy Rowley‘s men hosted Sutton United and scraped a 3-2 thanks to two last stoppage time goals.

Last time out the Glovers were beat 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) by Southport in the FA Trophy. With the travelling Glovers faithful optimistic of a Wembley trip, Yeovil soon repaid the support of the travelling fans with a goal just before the break thanks to the in-from James Daly.

The Somerset side couldn’t hang on a conceded with 10 minutes to forcing a shootout, and the less we say about that the better.

The sun sets on our dreams of a Wembley final.

Tamworth

The Staffordshire side are in a better predicament than their counterparts. Over the last five fixtures they are unbeaten with three draws and two wins. Currently sat in 10th, the Lambs are very much one of the in-form sides in the league, with 11 goals scored during the same stretch of games.

It was perhaps last time out that the midlands team showed their growing confidence and quality with a 3-2 win over fourth place Boreham Wood. That result really cemented the credentials of Tamworth heading into the latter part of the season. In form striker (how nice it would be to have one of them) Oliver Lynch bagged two goals with Stefan Mols grabbing the other in the impressive win.

KEY PLAYERS…

YEOVIL TOWN – JAMES DALY

It could only be Daly after the last week. In what has been a very stop start campaign for the winger, over the last two games Daly has been integral to getting goals where other members of the team haven’t. Now it’s not the 26-year-olds fault that for long parts of the season the whole squad has been underperforming, himself included, but the he is given the chance to play he clearly has quality.

James Daly
Pic c/o Gary Brown

It’s understatement to say that eyebrows were raised when we signed him from Harrogate town in the summer, with many believing he was a better standard than us. With a crucial double against Sutton last week and the opening goal against Southport, Daly has proved he has the ability, but let’s hope he can sustain this to show it’s not just a flash in the pan purple patch.

TAMWORTH – OLIVER LYNCH

If we take the last five games as a sample size for form, Lynch is in great form. For a striker it’s all about scoring goals and Lynch has started to find the net more regularly in recent weeks. Across the five game period I talked about, the 21-year-old has bagged four goals in that time.

Two of those four came last time out against Boreham Wood, the on-loan Luton man scored a brace, helping his team to a 3-2 win over the London side. His uptick in form will be pleasing for Lambs fans, but for Yeovil who have at times had an unsure defence, it could be a struggle to keep Lynch under control.

THE GAFFER…

The man in the away dugout on Tuesday night will be the longstanding Andy Peaks. The 55-year-old has been at The Lamb Ground since 2022 now and has helped Tamworth become a recognised National League club in that time.

Before taking over four years ago, Peaks was at boss down at Rushden & Diamonds for nine years, between 2013 and 2022. that was his first job in management after spells as assistant at Rushden & Diamonds, Daventry Town and AFC Long Buckby in the six years prior.

Peaks’ record when facing the Glovers is that of symmetry, with three games played against Yeovil he has won one, drawn one and lost one.

LAST TIME WE MET…

The teams last played each other way back at the start of the campaign in September when Tamworth won 1-0 at The Lamb Ground. The only goal that day coming from Tyler Roberts in the 75th minute. Coincidently it was the only game in the Danny Webb era.
Danny Webb

When the two sides last met at Huish Park it was just over a year ago, it was Yeovil who took the the three points with a 2-1 win over the Lambs. That day, Tamworth took a 0-1 lead through Ronan Maher just before the half hour mark. It wasn’t until the 49th minute that the Glovers equalised through Charlie Cooper. Before Frank Nouble got the winner 10 minutes later.

DON’T I KNOW YOU…

There will be no former Glovers making the trip to their old stomping ground on Tuesday night.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE…

Oliver Mackey will be the man with the whistle on Tuesday night. For more on him and his team read Ben’s article here.
